Two decades of ceria nanoparticle research: structure, properties and emerging applications

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) are versatile materials with unique and unusual properties that vary depending on their surface chemistry, size, shape, coating, oxidation states, crystallinity, dopant, and structural and surface defects. This review encompasses advances made over the past twenty years in the development of CeNPs and ceria-based nanostructures, the structural determinants affecting their activity, and translation of these distinct features into applications. The two oxidation states of nanosized CeNPs (Ce3+/Ce4+) coexisting at the nanoscale level facilitate the formation of oxygen vacancies and defect states, which confer extremely high reactivity and oxygen buffering capacity and the ability to act as catalysts for oxidation and reduction reactions. However, the method of synthesis, surface functionalization, surface coating and defects are important factors in determining their properties. This review highlights key properties of CeNPs, their synthesis, interactions, and reaction pathways and provides examples of emerging applications. Due to their unique properties, CeNPs have become quintessential candidates for catalysis, chemical mechanical planarization (CMP), sensing, biomedical applications, and environmental remediation, with tremendous potential to create novel products and translational innovations in a wide range of industries. This review highlights the timely relevance and the transformative potential of these materials in addressing societal challenges and driving technological advancements across these fields.

Synthesis of nanoparticles via microfluidic devices and integrated applications

In recent years, nanomaterials have attracted the research intervention of experts in the fields of catalysis, energy, biomedical testing, and biomedicine with their unrivaled optical, chemical, and biological properties. From basic metal and oxide nanoparticles to complex quantum dots and MOFs, the stable preparation of various nanomaterials has always been a struggle for researchers. Microfluidics, as a paradigm of microscale control, is a remarkable platform for online stable synthesis of nanomaterials with efficient mass and heat transfer in microreactors, flexible blending of reactants, and precise control of reaction conditions. We describe the process of microfluidic preparation of nanoparticles in the last 5 years in terms of microfluidic techniques and the methods of microfluidic manipulation of fluids. Then, the ability of microfluidics to prepare different nanomaterials, such as metals, oxides, quantum dots, and biopolymer nanoparticles, is presented. The effective synthesis of some nanomaterials with complex structures and the cases of nanomaterials prepared by microfluidics under extreme conditions (high temperature and pressure), the compatibility of microfluidics as a superior platform for the preparation of nanoparticles is demonstrated. Microfluidics has a potent integration capability to combine nanoparticle synthesis with real-time monitoring and online detection, which significantly improves the quality and production efficiency of nanoparticles, and also provides a high-quality ultra-clean platform for some bioassays.

Surface Engineering of Carbon-Supported Platinum as a Route to Electrocatalysts with Superior Durability and Activity for PEMFC Cathodes

Hydrogen fuel cells are regarded as a promising new carbon mitigation strategy to realize carbon neutrality. The exploitation of robust and efficient cathode catalysts is thus vital to the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, we demonstrate a facile and scalable surface engineering route to achieve superior durability and high activity of a Pt-based material as a PEMFC cathode catalyst through a controllable liquid-phase reduction approach. The proposed surface engineering strategy by modifying Pt/C reduces the oxygen content on the carbon support and also decreases the surface defects on Pt nanoparticles (NPs), which effectively alleviate the corrosion of carbon and inhibit the detachment, agglomeration, and growth of Pt NPs. The resulting catalyst exhibits superior durability after a 10,000 potential cycling test in an acid electrolyte─outperforming commercial Pt/C. Moreover, the catalyst also demonstrates an improved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in comparison to commercial Pt/C by virtue of the high content of metallic Pt and the weakened Pt-OH bonding that releases more Pt active sites for ORR catalysis. Most importantly, the developed catalyst shows outstanding PEMFC performance and excellent long-term durability over 50 h of a constant-current test and 100 h of a load-cycling operation. This effective route provides a new avenue for exploiting robust Pt-based catalysts with superior activity in practical applications of PEMFCs.

Continuous Flow Methods of Fabricating Catalytically Active Metal Nanoparticles

One of the obstacles preventing the commercialization of colloidal nanoparticle catalysts is the difficulty in fabricating these materials at scale while maintaining a high level of control over their resulting morphologies, and ultimately, their properties. Translation of batch-scale solution nanoparticle syntheses to continuous flow reactors has been identified as one method to address the scaling issue. The superior heat and mass transport afforded by the high surface-area-to-volume ratios of micro- and millifluidic channels allows for high control over reaction conditions and oftentimes results in decreased reaction times, higher yields, and/or more monodisperse size distributions compared to an analogous batch reaction. Furthermore, continuous flow reactors are automatable and have environmental health and safety benefits, making them practical for commercialization. Herein, a discussion of continuous flow methods, reactor design, and potential challenges is presented. A thorough account of the implementation of these technologies for the fabrication of catalytically active metal nanoparticles is reviewed for hydrogenation, electrocatalysis, and oxidation reactions.
