Tris(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)polysulfone-methylene quaternary phosphonium chloride (TPQPCl) ionomer chemically modified electrodes: An electroanalytical study towards sensing applications

Enhanced dehalogenation of brominated DBPs by catalyzed electrolysis using Vitamin B12 modified electrodes: Kinetics, mechanisms, and mass balances

Vitamin B₁₂ (VB₁₂) modified electrodes were prepared for the electrocatalytic reductive debromination of tribromoacetic acid (TBAA). Under galvanostatic conditions set as 5 mmol/L VB₁₂ loading, 20 mmol/L Na₂SO₄ as electrolyte, 10.0 mA/cm² current density, pH 3, and 298 K, the degradation efficiency of 200 μg/L TBAA at the VB₁₂ modified electrode could reach 99.9 % after 6 h. The debromination of TBAA followed the first-order kinetic model. The masses of carbon and bromine elements were conserved before and after the reaction, together with the qualitative analysis of the degradation products showed the likely degradation pathways as TBAA→dibromoacetic acid (DBAA)→monobromoacetic acid (MBAA)→acetic acid (AA). ESR detection and quenching experiments confirmed the role of atomic H* in TBAA debromination. In-situ Raman spectroscopy showed that the Co-Br bond was strongly enriched to the electrode surface, accelerating the electron transfer. The H₂O dissociation performance and transition states searching catalyzed by VB₁₂ were calculated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) and proved that the composite electrode can effectively promote atomic H* generation. Material characterization and electrochemical performance tests showed that the VB₁₂ modified electrode had excellent stability and atomic H* catalytic activity. The electrocatalytic debromination of TBAA at VB₁₂ modified electrodes mainly involves two mechanisms, direct reduction by electron transfer and indirect reduction by the strongly reducing atom H*. The results provide an efficient way to achieve safe removal of brominated DBPs from drinking water after chlorination and before human consumption.

The immobilisation and reactivity of Fe(CN)63−/4− in an intrinsically microporous polyamine (PIM-EA-TB)

Protonation of the molecularly rigid polymer of intrinsic microporosity PIM-EA-TB can be coupled to immobilisation of Fe(CN)63−/4− (as well as immobilisation of Prussian blue) into 1–2 nm diameter channels. The resulting films provide redox-active coatings on glassy carbon electrodes. Uptake, transport, and retention of Fe(CN)63−/4− in the microporous polymer are strongly pH dependent requiring protonation of the PIM-EA-TB (pKA ≈ 4). Both Fe(CN)64− and Fe(CN)63− can be immobilised, but Fe(CN)64− appears to bind tighter to the polymer backbone presumably via bridging protons. Loss of Fe(CN)63−/4− by leaching into the aqueous solution phase becomes significant only at pH > 9 and is likely to be associated with hydroxide anions directly entering the microporous structure to combine with protons. This and the interaction of Fe(CN)63−/4− and protons within the molecularly rigid PIM-EA-TB host are suggested to be responsible for retention and relatively slow leaching processes. Electrocatalysis with immobilised Fe(CN)63−/4− is demonstrated for the oxidation of ascorbic acid.

Voltammetry at Hexamethyl-P-Terphenyl Poly(Benzimidazolium) (HMT-PMBI)-Coated Glassy Carbon Electrodes: Charge Transport Properties and Detection of Uric and Ascorbic Acid

We describe the voltammetric behavior of an anion-exchange membrane, hexamethyl-p-terphenyl poly(benzimidazolium) (HMT-PMBI). The anion-exchange properties of HMT-PMBI chemically modified electrodes were investigated using K4Fe(CN)6 and K2IrCl6 as redox probes. The permselectivity properties of HMT-PMBI chemically modified electrodes were ascertained using tris(2-2')bipyridyl-ruthenium(II) chloride Ru(bpy)32+. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were utilized to extract parameters such as the concentration of the redox mediators inside the films and the apparent diffusion coefficients. We found the concentration of K4Fe(CN)6 and K2IrCl6 redox species within HMT-PMBI-coated films to be on the order of 0.04-0.1 mol·dm-3, and values of Dapp ca. 10-10-10-9 cm2·s-1. To evaluate the possibility of using such a polymer coating in electroanalysis, HMT-PMBI-modified electrodes were utilized for the voltammetric detection of uric acid in artificial urine, Surine® and ascorbic acid in Vitamin C samples. The results showed that HMT-PMBI-coated electrodes can detect uric acid in Surine® with a limit of detection (LoD) of 7.7 µM, sensitivity of 0.14 µA·µM-1·cm-2, and linear range between 5 μM and 200 μM, whereas for Vitamin C tablets, the LoD is 41.4 µM, the sensitivity is 0.08 µA·µM-1·cm-2, and the linear range is between 25 μM and 450 μM.
