Abstract
Designing and constructing hierarchically structured materials with heterogeneous compositions is the key to developing an effective catalyst for overall water-splitting applications. Herein, we report the fabrication of hollow-structured selenium-doped nickel-cobalt hybrids on carbon paper as a self-supported electrode (denoted as Se-Ni|Co/CP, where Ni|Co hybrids consist of nickel-cobalt alloy-incorporated nickel-cobalt oxide). The procedure involves direct growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) on bimetal-based nickel-cobalt hydroxide (NiCoOH) electrodeposited on CP, followed by selenous etching and pyrolysis to obtain the final Se-Ni|Co/CP electrocatalytic system. The optimized Se-Ni|Co/CP [Se-Ni1|Co9/CP(0.3)] exhibits remarkable performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), displaying a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at small overpotentials of 105 mV for HER and 235 mV for OER. Furthermore, it allows an alkali electrolyzer to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage of only 1.51 V. The outstanding catalytic activity of Se-Ni|Co/CP is ascribed to the high intrinsic activity of the bimetallic catalyst, efficient interfaces, and charge transport facilitated by the heterogeneous component, the hollow structure inherited from the metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-derived material providing ample porosity and active sites, and structural robustness achieved through self-supported construction.

Abstract
Rationally designing metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as an ideal dual-function material for water electrolysis and supercapacitors is of great significance for energy storage and conversion. Herein, we successfully synthesized the nanoneedle-like structure CoNi-MOF by partially replacing 2, 5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (TDA) with 1, 1'-Ferrocenedicarboxylate (Fc). The exchange of Fc ligand can modulate the morphology and electronic structure of CoNi-TDA, thus exposing the abundant active sites and improving the electrical conductivity. The as-prepared CoNi-TDA/0.2Fc exhibited a low overpotential of 236 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and a low Tafel slope of 40.44 mV dec-1. Additionally, CoNi-TDA/0.2Fc demonstrated a notable specific capacitance of 1409 F g-1 at 1 A/g and excellent stability, maintaining a capacitance retention of 96.54 % after 20,000 cycles. The study proposes a new strategy to modulate the morphology and electronic structure of MOFs via the ligand exchange for high-performance energy storage and conversion device.

Abstract
Electrochemical water splitting is a promising approach for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER); however, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a major bottleneck due to its high energy requirements. High-performance electrocatalysts capable of facilitating HER, OER, and overall water splitting (OWS) are highly needed to improve OER kinetics. In this work, we synthesized a trimetallic heterostructure of Ru, Ni, and Co incorporated into N-doped carbon (denoted as Ru/Ni/Co@NC) by first synthesizing Ni/Co@NC from Ni-ZIF-67 polyhedrons via high-temperature carbonization, followed by Ru doping using the galvanic replacement method. Benefiting from increased active surface sites, modulated electronic structure, and enhanced interfacial synergistic effects, Ru/Ni/Co@NC exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic performance for both HER and OER processes. The optimized Ru/Ni/Co@NC catalyst, with a minimal Ru mass ratio of ∼2.07%, demonstrated significantly low overpotential values of 34 mV for HER and 174 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 with corresponding Tafel slope values of 33.42 and 34.39 mV/dec, respectively. Further, the optimized catalyst was loaded onto carbon paper and used as anode and cathode materials for alkaline water splitting. Interestingly, a low cell voltage of just 1.44 V was obtained. The enhanced electrolytic performance was further elaborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which confirmed that Ru doping in Ni/Co introduced additional active sites for H*, enhancing adsorption/desorption abilities for HER (ΔGH* = -0.30 eV), lowering water dissociation barrier (ΔGb = 0.49 eV) and reducing the energy barrier for the rate-determining step of OER (O* → OOH*) to 1.62 eV in an alkaline environment. These findings reflect the significant potential of ZIF-67-based catalysts in energy conversion and storage applications.

Abstract
Transition metal sulfides are widely used in supercapacitor electrode materials and exhibit excellent performance because of their rich variety, low price, and high theoretical specific capacity. At present, the main methods to prepare transition metal sulfides include the hydrothermal method and the electrochemical method. In order to further improve their electrochemical performance, two aspects can be addressed. Firstly, by controllable synthesis of nanomaterials, porous structures and large surface areas can be achieved, thereby improving ion transport efficiency. Secondly, by combining transition metal sulfides with other energy storage materials, such as carbon materials and metal oxides, the synergy between different materials can be fully utilized. However, future research still needs to address some challenges. In order to guide further in-depth research, it is necessary to combine the current research-derived knowledge and propose a direction for future development of transition metal sulfide electrode materials.

Abstract
The fast development of Internet of Things and the rapid advent of next-generation versatile wearable electronics require cost-effective and highly-efficient electroactive materials for flexible electrochemical energy storage devices. Among various electroactive materials, binder-free nanostructured arrays have attracted widespread attention. Featured with growing on a conductive and flexible substrate without using inactive and insulating binders, binder-free 3D nanoarray electrodes facilitate fast electron/ion transportation and rapid reaction kinetics with more exposed active sites, maintain structure integrity of electrodes even under bending or twisted conditions, readily release generated joule heat during charge/discharge cycles and achieve enhanced gravimetric capacity of the whole device. Binder-free metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoarrays and/or MOF-derived nanoarrays with high surface area and unique porous structure have emerged with great potential in energy storage field and been extensively exploited in recent years. In this review, common substrates used for binder-free nanoarrays are compared and discussed. Various MOF-based and MOF-derived nanoarrays, including metal oxides, sulfides, selenides, nitrides, phosphides and nitrogen-doped carbons, are surveyed and their electrochemical performance along with their applications in flexible energy storage are analyzed and overviewed. In addition, key technical issues and outlooks on future development of MOF-based and MOF-derived nanoarrays toward flexible energy storage are also offered.

Abstract
Among several electrocatalysts for energy storage purposes including supercapacitors, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and their derivatives have spurred wide spread interest owing to their structural merits, multifariousness with tailor-made functionalities and tunable pore sizes. The electrochemical performance of supercapacitors can be further enhanced using in situ grown MOFs and their derivatives, eliminating the role of insulating binders whose "dead mass" contribution hampers the device capability otherwise. The expulsion of binders not only ensures better adhesion of catalyst material with the current collector but also facilitates the transport of electron and electrolyte ions and remedy cycle performance deterioration with better chemical stability. This review systematically summarizes different kinds of metal-ligand combinations for in situ grown MOFs and derivatives, preparation techniques, modification strategies, properties, and charge transport mechanisms as freestanding electrode materials in determining the performance of supercapacitors. In the end, the review also highlights potential promises, challenges, and state-of-the-art advancement in the rational design of electrodes to overcome the bottlenecks and to improve the capability of MOFs in energy storage applications.

Abstract
Rational design and structural regulation of hybrid nanomaterials with superior electrochemical performance are crucial for developing sustainable energy storage platforms. Among these materials, NiCo-layered double hydroxides (NiCo-LDHs) demonstrate an exceptional charge storage capabilities owing to their tunable 2D lamellar structure, large interlayer spacing, and rich redox electrochemically active sites. However, NiCo-LDHs still suffer from sever agglomeration of their particles with limited charge transfer rates, resulting in an inadequate rate capability. In this study, bimetallic ZnCo-metal organic framework (MOF) tripods were grown on the surface of NiCo-LDH nanowires, which significantly reduced the self-agglomeration and stacking of the NiCo-LDH nanowire arrays, offering more accessible active sites for charge transfer and shortening the path for ion diffusion. The fabricated hybrid ZnCo-MOF@NiCo-LDH and its individual counterparts were tested as supercapacitor electrodes. The ZnCo-MOF@NiCo-LDH electrode demonstrated a remarkable specific capacitance of 1611 F g-1 at 2 A g-1 with an enhanced rate capability of 66% from 2 to 20 A g-1. Moreover, an asymmetric all solid-state supercapacitor device was constructed using ZnCo-MOF@NiCo-LDH and palm tree-derived activated carbon (P-AC) as positive and negative poles, respectively. The constructed device can store a high specific energy of 44.5 Wh Kg-1 and deliver a specific power of 876.7 W Kg-1 with outstanding Columbic efficiency over 10,000 charging/discharging cycles at 15 A g-1.

Abstract
Understanding the synergistic mechanism of multi-component alloys is crucial and challenging for overall water splitting. Herein, Ru-NiCo0.5-600 °C and Ru-Ni0.75Co with excellent electrocatalytic activity are designed and synthesized. The Ru-NiCo0.5-600 °C alloy exhibits remarkable HER activity with an overpotential of 42, 77 and 93 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline, acidic and neutral conditions, and the Ru-Ni0.75Co electrocatalyst presents outstanding OER activity with an overpotential of 176 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH. The Ru-NiCo0.5-600 °C ||Ru-Ni0.75Co cell requires only 1.48 and 1.69 V to reach 10 and 100 mA cm-2 towards overall water splitting. A series of experiments reveal that the strong electronic coupling among Ru, Ni and Co regulates the electronic structure and enhances the intrinsic catalytic activity and stability of the as-synthesized Ru-NiCo electrocatalysts. Systematic experimental and theoretical results prove that Ni atoms act as the active sites of dissociating water, while Ru and Co are respectively the active centers of proton and hydroxyl adsorption for HER and OER. Our work provides a new perspective for profoundly understanding the synergistic effect of multi-component alloys towards water splitting.

The specific capacitance of the obtained sample is 1733.23 C g−1 at 1 A g−1. The assembled asymmetric device presents an energy density of 59.59 W h kg−1 at 1404.04 W kg−1. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the high theoretical specific capacitance of the NiCo2S4 sheets and the superior cycling stability of the PPy film. The device also shows an outstanding mechanical flexibility at different bending angles. Abstract
Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as one of the most promising electrode materials for electrochemical capacitors due to their large specific surface area and abundant pore structure. Herein, we report a Co-MOF electrode with a vertical-standing 2D parallelogram-like nanoarray structure on a Ni foam substrate via a one-step solvothermal method. The as-prepared Co-MOF on a Ni foam electrode delivered a high area-specific capacitance of 582.0 mC cm−2 at a current density of 2 mA cm−2 and a good performance rate of 350.0 mC cm−2 at 50 mA cm−2. Moreover, an asymmetric electrochemical capacitor (AEC) device (Co-MOF on Ni foam//AC) was assembled by using the as-prepared Co-MOF on a Ni foam as the cathode and a active carbon-coated Ni foam as the anode to achieve a maximum energy density of 0.082 mW cm−2 at a power density of 0.8 mW cm−2, which still maintained 0.065 mW cm−2 at a high power density of 11.94 mW cm−2. Meanwhile, our assembled device exhibited an excellent cycling stability with a capacitance retention of nearly 100% after 1000 cycles. Therefore, this work provides a simple method to prepare MOF-based material for the application of energy storage and conversion.

Abstract
A novel hydrogel polymer electrolyte was prepared by incorporation of 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BG) to cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAM). The electrolyte (PAMBG) was modified with cobalt (II) sulfate with various doping ratios (PAMBGCoX) to increase the capacitance by increasing faradaic reactions. The supercapacitor device assembly was performed by using active carbon (AC) electrodes and hydrogel polymer electrolytes. The specific capacitance of the PAMBGCo5 device indicated 130 F g-1 , which is at least a seven-fold improvement due to the insertion of Co as a redox component. The electrolyte device, PAMBGCo5, displays superior performance having an energy density of 38 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 500 W kg-1 . Additionally, with the same hydrogel, the device performed 10,000 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles via retaining 91% of the initial capacitance. A cost-effective electrolyte, PAMBGCo5, was tested in a carbon-based supercapacitor under bent and twisted conditions at various angles, confirming the robustness of the device.

Hexadecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide promotes electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction. Commun Chem 2020; 3:154. Abstract
The oxygen evolution reaction is an essential factor in many renewable energy technologies, such as water splitting, fuel cells, and metal-air batteries. Here we show a unique solution to improve the oxygen evolution reaction rate by adjusting the electrolyte composition via the introduction of hexadecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide into an alkaline electrolyte. The strong adsorption of hexadecyltrimethylammonium cations on the surface of electrocatalysts provides the increased absolute number of OH- ions near the electrocatalyst surface, which effectively promotes the oxygen evolution reaction performance of electrocatalysts, such as Fe1-yNiyS2@Fe1-xNixOOH microplatelets and SrBaNi2Fe12O22 powders. Meanwhile, we present an electrochemical conditioning approach to engineering the electrochemically active surface area of electrocatalysts, by which the resultant Fe1-yNiyS2@Fe1-xNixOOH microplatelets have a larger electrochemically active surface area after the electrochemical conditioning of the as-synthesized Fe1-yNiyS2 microplatelets using ammonia borane than those obtained after the conventional electrochemical conditioning without ammonia borane, presumably due to the appropriate conversion rate of Fe1-xNixOOH shells.
