Bimetallic alloy SbSn nanodots filled in electrospun N-doped carbon fibers for high performance Na-ion battery anode

Hybrid-Mechanism Synergistic Flexible Nb2O5@WS2@C Carbon Nanofiber Anode for Superior Sodium Storage

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have demonstrated remarkable development potential and commercial prospects. However, in the current state of research, the development of high-energy-density, long-cycle-life, high-rate-performance anode materials for SIBs remains a huge challenge. Free-standing flexible electrodes, owing to their ability to achieve higher energy density without the need for current collectors, binders, and conductive additives, have garnered significant attention across various fields. In this work, we designed and fabricated a free-standing three-dimensional flexible Nb2O5@WS2@C carbon nanofiber (CNF) anode based on a hybrid adsorption-intercalation-conversion mechanism of sodium storage, using electrospinning and hydrothermal synthesis processes. The hybrid structure, aided by synergistic effects, releases the advantages of all materials, demonstrating a superior rate performance (288, 248, 211, 158, 90, and 48 mA h g-1 at the current density of 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 A g-1, respectively) and good cycling stability (160 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles at 1 A g-1). This work provides certain guiding significance for future research on hybrid and flexible anodes of SIBs.

Spatially Confined Fe7S8 Nanoparticles Anchored on a Porous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanosheet Skeleton for High-Rate and Durable Sodium Storage

Iron sulfides are widely explored as anodes of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to high theoretical capacities and low cost, but their practical application is still impeded by poor rate capability and fast capacity decay. Herein, for the first time, we construct highly dispersed Fe₇S₈ nanoparticles anchored on a porous N-doped carbon nanosheet (CN) skeleton (denoted as Fe₇S₈/NC) with high conductivity and numerous active sites via facile ion adsorption and thermal evaporation combined procedures coupled with a gas sulfurization treatment. Nanoscale design coupled with a conductive carbon skeleton can simultaneously mitigate the above obstacles to obtain enhanced structural stability and faster electrode reaction kinetics. With the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the synergistic interaction between CNs and Fe₇S₈ can not only ensure enhanced Na⁺ adsorption ability but also promote the charge transfer kinetics of the Fe₇S₈/NC electrode. Accordingly, the designed Fe₇S₈/NC electrode exhibits remarkable electrochemical performance with superior high-rate capability (451.4 mAh g^-1 at 6 A g^-1) and excellent long-term cycling stability (508.5 mAh g^-1 over 1000 cycles at 4 A g^-1) due to effectively alleviated volumetric variation, accelerated charge transfer kinetics, and strengthened structural integrity. Our work provides a feasible and effective design strategy toward the low-cost and scalable production of high-performance metal sulfide anode materials for SIBs.

SnCo Nanoparticles Loaded in Hollow Carbon Spheres Interlinked by N-Doped Carbon Fibers for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

The development of Sn-based materials with electrochemically inactive matrices is a novel strategy to alleviate the volume expansion and giant structure strain/stress during the sodiation/desodiation process. In this work, a freestanding membrane based on the unique bean pod-like host composed by nitrogen-doped carbon fibers and hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) encapsulated with SnCo nanoparticles is synthesized by electrospinning (B-SnCo/NCFs). In this unique bean pod-like structure, Sn acts as a host for Na⁺ storage, while the Co plays the important role of an electrochemically inactive matrix that can not only buffer the volume variations but also inhibit aggregation and particle growth of the Sn phase during the electrochemical Na-Sn alloying process. Meanwhile, the introduction of hollow carbon spheres can not only provide enough sufficient void space to withstand the volume expansion during the (de)sodiation processes but also improve the conductivity of the anode along the carbon fibers. Furthermore, the B-SnCo/NCF freestanding membrane can increase the contact area between the active material and the electrolyte, which can provide more active sites during the cycling process. When used as an anode material for Na-ion batteries, the freestanding B-SnCo/NCF anode exhibits an outstanding rate capacity of 243.5 mA h g^-1 at 1.6 A g^-1and an excellent specific capacity of 351 mA h g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 for 300 cycles.
