A comparison study of MFe2O4 (M: Ni, Cu, Zn)-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite for electrochemical detection of bisphenol A

CuFe2O4/lignin-based carbon composited photothermal and photodynamic agents for synergetic antibacterial therapy

Bacterial infection has become the second leading cause of death in the world. Exploring a new highly antibacterial catalyst to replace traditional antibacterial agent is crucial for the society development of human beings. In this study, CuFe2O4/Lg-based carbon composited catalysts were rationally constructed by facile hydrothermal method. Lignin-derived carbon with enormous oxygen-containing functional group was beneficial to anchor CuFe2O4 nanoparticles. The close contact interface between CuFe2O4 and Lignin-based carbon material was expected to extend the range of optical absorption and promote the separation and transportation of photogenerated carriers. Under NIR (980 nm, 1.5 W/cm2) light irradiation, the as-prepared CuFe2O4/Lg (20 μg/mL) exhibited excellent photo/photothermal synergetic in vitro (against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and in vivo (against Staphylococcus aureus-infected mouse wound model) antibacterial performance. Furthermore, the cell count assay kit 8 (CCK-8 kit) demonstrated the good biocompatibility of this material. On the basis of the experimental results, a possible antibacterial mechanism based on the synergetic photothermal and photodynamic therapies was proposed. This work presented a lignin- derived carbon-based highly efficient antibacterial disinfection agent with desirable biosafety.

Influence of UV light, ultrasound, and heat treatment on the migration of bisphenol A from polyethylene terephthalate bottle into the food simulant

This research examined the impacts of ultrasound, UV light, storage time, and temperature on the leaching of bisphenol A (BPA) from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) drinking water bottles in Turkey. The initial phase of the investigation encompassed the quantification of BPA in two distinct brands of bottled water. Samples were extracted by solid- phase extraction (SPE) and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD). According to the results in the first part, the highest BPA levels were found in bottled water. In the second part of the study, 10 to 30 min of ultrasound treatment increased the BPA migration with increased time in simulants. Design and synthesis of hierarchical MnO-Fe3O4@C/expanded graphite composite for sensitive electrochemical detection of bisphenol A

Hierarchically nanostructured binary transition metal oxide-based materials with high conductivity and catalytic activity are quite attractive for the electrochemical quantitative detection of environmental pollutants due to their natural abundance, variable oxidation state, and excellent synergies between metal sites. Herein, a new hierarchical MnO-Fe3O4@C/expanded graphite (EG) composite is designed and synthesized through a simple and in situ annealing method with the utilization of bimetallic organic framework (FeMn-MOF)/EG precursor. The synthesized MnO-Fe3O4@C/EG composite possesses a unique hierarchical nanoarchitecture that small-sized bimetallic oxide nanoparticles of 10-40 nm completely encapsulated by amorphous carbon layers of 2-4 nm are uniformly distributed on the EG platform. This distinctive structure combines the advantages of high conductivity, excellent catalytic activity, and strong stability. Resultantly, when it is applied to monitor environmental endocrine disruptors, the sensor exhibits a significant catalytic effect on the electrochemical oxidation of bisphenol A (BPA), inducing an amplified response current. In addition, the sensor shows a wide linear range of 1-50 μM and 50-400 μM for the BPA monitor, giving a sensitivity of 5208.8 and 1641.9 μA mM-1 cm-2, respectively. This study offers a new approach to design hierarchical binary metal oxide-based sensing materials as well as to explore their electrochemical properties and applications for the determination of emerging contaminants.

Cobalt-nickel phosphide supported on reduced graphene oxide for sensitive electrochemical detection of bisphenol A

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a commonly utilized phenolic contaminant in several manufacturing processes, contributing to environmental pollution. Therefore, the detection of BPA holds significant importance for monitoring water quality. In this work, we report a robust electrochemical detection method for BPA utilizing cobalt-nickel bimetal phosphide nanoparticles (CoNiP) supported on reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The CoNiP@rGO-modified glassy carbon electrode exhibits remarkable electrochemical activity in BPA detection. The detection mechanism is controlled by adsorption-mediated electron transfer, showcasing a low limit of detection (LOD) at 0.38 nM and a high sensitivity of 96.4 A M-1 cm-2 within the linear range of 0.001-8 μM. Furthermore, our developed sensor demonstrates good reproducibility and successfully detected BPA in actual water samples. The electrochemical activity of CoNiP@rGO was also characterized for hydroquinone (HQ) detected through a diffusion-controlled mechanism, displaying an excellent sensitivity of 36.4 A M-1 cm-2 across a broad linear range. These findings underscore the promising potential of CoNiP@rGO as a candidate for electrochemical detection of phenolic contaminants, especially in the sensing of BPA in environmental water samples. This efficacy is attributed to the modulation of its electronic properties, combined with its large electroactive surface area and low electron-transfer resistance.

Development of a novel green catalyzed nanostructured Cu(II) macrocyclic complex-based disposable electrochemical sensor for sensitive detection of bisphenol A in environmental samples

BPA is an endocrine disruptor and the leading environmental pollutant due to its use as raw material in industries. Therefore, the present work reports the sensitive, efficient, and disposable electrochemical paper-based SPE for determining the BPA sensor using an amide-based macrocyclic complex (nanostructured complex of copper acetate with macrocyclic ligand, i.e., CuL (CH3COO)2) synthesized using Citrus limon (lemon) extract via sonication for the first time. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical analyses have been characterized by mass spectroscopy, FTIR, UV-Vis, XRD, FESEM-EDX, elemental mapping and electrochemical techniques. The sensor platform for detecting BPA was fabricated by simple drop-casting on the disposable paper-based SPE using macrocyclic complex, i.e., CuL (CH3COO)2/SPE. After optimizing the conditions, CuL (CH3COO)2/SPE electrode was employed for determining BPA via CV with a wide linear range of 31 × 10-9 μM-0.205 μM, low LOD of 0.027 nM, and high sensitivity of 49.71 μA (log nM)-1 cm-2 having correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.976 which is quite better in compared to other reported SPE sensor for detection of BPA. Further, our sensor also showed good selectivity and reproducibility, in addition to detecting BPA in environmental samples (tube well water, river water and drain water) with acceptable recoveries and RSDs values. In this work, the combination of macrocyclic complex and paper-based SPE has turned out to be a cost-effective electrochemical sensor.

An amplified electrochemical sensor employing one-step synthesized nickel-copper-zinc ferrite/carboxymethyl cellulose/graphene oxide nanosheets composite for sensitive analysis of omeprazole

In this work, a signal amplification strategy was designed by the fabrication of a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on nickel-copper-zinc ferrite (Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4Fe2O4)/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs) composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for determination of omeprazole (OMP). The one-step synthesized Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4Fe2O4/CMC/GONs nanocomposite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Then, the Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4Fe2O4/CMC/GONs/GCE was applied to study the electrochemical behavior of the OMP. Electrochemical data show that the Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4Fe2O4/CMC/GONs/GCE exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance on the oxidation of OMP compared with bare GCE, GONs/GCE, CMC/GONs/GCE and MFe2O4/GCE (M = Cu, Ni and Zn including single, double and triple of metals) which can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the nanocomposite components, outstanding electrical properties of Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4Fe2O4 and high conductivity of CMC/GONs as well as the further electron transport action of the nanocomposite. Under optimal conditions, the Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4Fe2O4/CMC/GONs/GCE offers a high performance toward the electrodetermination of OMP with the wide linear-range responses (0.24-5 and 5-75 μM), lower detection limit (0.22 ± 0.05 μM), high sensitivity (1.1543 μA μM-1 cm-2), long-term signal stability and reproducibility (RSD = 2.54%). It should be noted that the Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4Fe2O4/CMC/GONs/GCE sensor could also be used for determination of OMP in drug and biological samples, indicating its feasibility for real analysis.

Thiacalix[4]arene-based metal-organic framework/reduced graphene oxide composite for electrochemical detection of chlorogenic acid

A novel metal-organic framework [Co2LCl4]·2DMF (Co-L) based on thiacalix[4]arene derivative was synthesized using the solvothermal method. Then Co-L was respectively mixed with reduced graphene oxide (RGO), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and mesoporous carbon (MC) to prepare corresponding composite materials. PXRD, SEM and N2 adsorption-desorption illustrated that composite materials have been successfully prepared. After optimizing experimental conditions for detecting chlorogenic acid (CGA), the Co-L@RGO(1:1) composite material showed the optimal electrocatalytic activity for CGA, which may be because RGO possessed large specific surface area and hydroxyl and carboxyl groups that could form hydrogen-bonding with the oxide of CGA. Benefiting from the synergetic effect of Co-L and RGO, the glassy carbon electrode modified with Co-L@RGO(1:1) (Co-L@RGO(1:1)/GCE) exhibited a low limit of detection (LOD) of 7.24 nM for CGA within the concentration of 0.1-2 μM and 2-20 μM. Co-L@RGO(1:1)/GCE also showed excellent selectivity, stability, and reproducibility for the CGA detection. Co-L@RGO(1:1)/GCE could detect the CGA in honeysuckle with satisfactory results. This work provided a great example for the thiacalix[4]arene-based MOF in the application of electrochemical sensors.

Facile Chemical Synthesis of Co-Ru-Based Heterometallic Supramolecular Polymer for Electrochemical Oxidation of Bisphenol A: Kinetics Study at the Electrode/Electrolyte Interface

Regardless of the adverse effects of Bisphenol A (BPA), its use in industry and in day-to-day life is increasing at a higher rate every year. In the present study, a simple and reliable chemical approach was used to develop an efficient BPA sensor based on a Co-Ru-based heterometallic supramolecular polymer (polyCoRu). Surface morphology and elemental analysis were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Furthermore, functional group analysis was accomplished by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). UV-vis spectroscopy was used to confirm the complexation in the ratio of 0.5:0.5:1 (metal 1/metal 2/ligand). Electrochemical characterization of the synthesized polyCoRu was conducted using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses. The study identified two distinct linear dynamic ranges for the detection of BPA, 0.197-2.94 and 3.5-17.72 μM. The regression equation was utilized to determine the sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD), resulting in values of 0.6 μA cm-2 μM-1 and 0.02 μM (S/N = 3), respectively. The kinetics of BPA oxidation at the polyCoRu/GCE were investigated to evaluate the heterogeneous rate constant (k), charge transfer coefficient (α), and the number of electrons transferred during the oxidation and rate-determining step. A probable electrochemical reaction mechanism has been presented for further comprehending the phenomena occurring at the electrode surface. The practical applicability of the fabricated electrode was analyzed using tap water, resulting in a high percentage of recovery ranging from 96 to 105%. Furthermore, the reproducibility and stability data demonstrated the excellent performance of polyCoRu/GCE.

Simultaneous electrochemical detection of dimethyl bisphenol A and bisphenol A using a novel Pt@SWCNTs-MXene-rGO modified screen-printed sensor

Since bisphenol A (BPA) and dimethyl bisphenol A (DM-BPA) are human endocrine disruptors (EDCs) with tiny potential differences (44 mV) and widespread applications, there is a lack of published reports on their simultaneous detection. Therefore, this study reports a novel electrochemical detection system capable of simultaneous direct detection of BPA and DM-BPA using screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) as a sensing platform. To improve the electrochemical performance of the SPCE, the SPCE was modified by using a combination of Pt nanoparticles modified with single-walled carbon nanotubes (Pt@SWCNTs), MXene (Ti₃C₂), and graphene oxide (GO). In addition, the GO in Pt@SWCNTs-MXene-GO was reduced to reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by the action of electric field (-1.2 V), which significantly improved the electrochemical properties of the composites and effectively solved the problem of dispersion of the modified materials on the electrode surface. Under optimal experimental conditions, Pt@SWCNTs-Ti₃C₂-rGO/SPCE exhibited a suitable detection range (0.006-7.4 μmol L^-1) and low detection limits (2.8 and 3 nmol L^-1, S/N = 3) for the simultaneous detection of BPA (0.392 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and DM-BPA (0.436 V vs. Ag/AgCl)). Thus, this study provides new insights into detecting compounds with similar structures and slight potential differences. Finally, the developed sensor's reproducibility, stability, interference resistance and accuracy were demonstrated with satisfactory results.

Electromagnetic Performance of NiMgCuZn Ferrite for Hyperthermia Application in Cancer Treatment

Ferrite with high permeability, high magnetic loss, and a low Curie temperature is a highly promising material for hyperthermia applications in cancer treatment. In this work, Ni_(0.29-x)Mg_xCu_0.14Zn_0.60Fe_1.94O_3.94 (NiMgCuZn) ferrites were prepared at different Mg ion concentrations. The dependence of the Mg ion contents on the crystal structure, magnetic, and permeability properties of NiMgCuZn ferrite was investigated. Structural characterization showed a high crystallinity of the materials and an increase in the lattice constant with the Mg ion content. The magnetic hysteresis loops revealed that the saturation magnetization decreased with an increasing Mg content. Furthermore, the permeability measurements showed an increase in permeability and magnetic loss with the doping of Mg. More importantly, the Curie temperature of the NiMgCuZn ferrite decreases with the Mg ion content and reaches 42.37 °C for x = 0.26 as well as a real permeability of ∼797.88@1 MHz and a magnetic loss of 0.316@1 MHz, which meet the requirements of tumor hyperthermia.

A lab-made screen-printed sensing strip for sensitive and selective electrochemical detection of butylated hydroxyanisole

This study describes the fabrication of a lab-made screen-printed electrode (LabSPE) and its sensing ability for the detection of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) which is a synthetic antioxidant utilized widely in food industries. The lab-made screen-printed electrodes were printed on a polycarbonate substrate stepwise via a screen-printing technique using various inks suitable for electrode templates and then modified for the detection of BHA. As for the design of the sensor, firstly, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) was synthesized electrochemically through the one-pot synthesis method. After the synthesis of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄ NPs), the surface of SPE was modified with the dual composite consisting of g-C₃N₄ and Fe₃O₄ NPs. Lastly, platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) were deposited electrochemically on the modified electrode in 0.5 M HCl solution containing 2 mM H₂PtCl₆ at a constant potential of 0.25 V for 45 s. After optimization of varied parameters such as pH of the electrolyte solution, deposition time, and deposition potential, the current responses of the sensor (Pt/g-C₃N₄-Fe₃O₄/LabSPE) toward BHA displayed linearity in the wide concentration range of 0.25 μM to 90 μM with a low detection limit of 0.053 μM. The selectivity of Pt/g-C₃N₄-Fe₃O₄/SPE was tested successfully in the presence of other antioxidants (BHT, TBHQ, GA, and PG). Moreover, the applicability of the proposed sensor for practical tests was verified by the detection of BHA in commercial samples.

Synthesis of perovskite-type potassium niobate using deep eutectic solvents: A promising electrode material for detection of bisphenol A

This study demonstrates a hydrothermal method to prepare perovskite-type potassium niobate (KNbO₃) through deep eutectic solvent (DES), which is further used as an electrode material for the determination of bisphenol A (BPA). The as-synthesized KNbO₃ was systematically characterized by different microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The KNbO₃-modified electrode demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic activity for BPA compared to the pristine electrode. The enhanced performance of the proposed sensor is attributed to the numerous active sites, large electrochemical surface area, high electrical conductivity, and rapid electron transfer. The fabricated sensor shows a wide detection range (0.01-84.3 μM), a low limit of detection (0.003 μM), a high sensitivity (0.51 μA μM^-1 cm^-2), and good anti-interference abilities towards the BPA detection by linear sweep voltammetry method. Besides, it was successfully applied to determining BPA in food samples, demonstrating good practicability. This design paves a new way to fabricate efficient electrode material for various electrochemical applications using a DES medium.

Electrochemical sensor based on confined synthesis of gold nanoparticles @ covalent organic frameworks for the detection of bisphenol A

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), a kind of conjugate crystalline polymers, has great potential for high performance electrochemical sensors due to high porosity, controllable pores and structure, and large specific surface area, etc. Herein, we developed an electrochemical sensor based on confined synthesis of gold nanoparticles @ 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and benzidine (BD) connected COFs (Au NPs@TpBD-COFs) for electrochemical detection of bisphenol A (BPA). Firstly, Au NPs were grown on the surface and in the pores of COFs by confinement synthesis strategy, which aimed to improve the conductivity and catalytic activity of COFs. Then, this composite was used to constitute electrochemical sensor for the oxidation of BPA, resulting a good electrocatalytic activity in the phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.4). Due to high conductivity of Au NPs and TpBD-COFs recognize BPA via π-π stacking interactions and hydrogen bonds, the proposed sensor for the detection of BPA has the linear range of 5-1000 μM and the detection limit of 1 μM. Finally, the proposed sensor was used to measure the content of BPA in real water samples with a satisfactory recovery from 98.6 to 106.9%. Those good results confirmed that the proposed electrochemical sensors for monitoring of BPA in the application of COFs provided a significant guidance.

A novel bimetallic MOFs combined with gold nanoflakes in electrochemical sensor for measuring bisphenol A

In this paper, a novel bimetallic Fe-Cu metal-organic framework combined with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (Fe-Cu-BTC) are synthesized using hydrothermal reaction. The bimetallic Fe-Cu-BTC with high BET (1504 cm³ g^-1) and high Langmuir surface area (1831 cm³ g^-1) is composited by gold nanoparticles to improve the conductivity and to develop their synergistic effect. A novel bisphenol A (BPA) sensor was prepared by dropcasting Fe-Cu-BTC on glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) followed by AuNPs electrodeposition. The Fe-Cu-BTC framework were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy studies (TEM), FT-IR, BET measurements and EDX spectra. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were carried out for surveying the electrochemical properties of the sensors and for the quantification of BPA. Two linear ranges of BPA concentrations 0.1-1.0 μM and 1.0-18 μM with 18 nM limit of detection were obtained. The developed sensor was used to measure the concentration of BPA in samples extracted from rain coat with the recovery ranging from 85.70 to 103.23%.

An electrochemical sensor for detection of trace-level endocrine disruptor bisphenol A using Mo2Ti2AlC3 MAX phase/MWCNT composite modified electrode

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrially preferred material for the production of plastic and polycarbonate as well as a used material for the interior of food and beverage cans. In this study, synthesis and electrochemical sensor application of Mo₂Ti₂AlC₃/MWCNT (multi-walled carbon nanotube) nanocomposite for BPA sensing was evaluated. Mo₂Ti₂AlC₃ was used as MAX phase material in the design of the sensor, and MWCNT was preferred to increase conductivity and sensitivity. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used to determine Mo₂Ti₂AlC₃/MWCNT nanocomposite's electrochemical sensor performances which had LOD of 2.7 nM and LOQ of 8.91 nM in the linear working range of 0.01-8.50 μM calculated from DPV. The composite showed a single oxidation step against BPA which is diffusion-controlled and irreversible. The sensor was successfully applied for the determination of BPA in milk pack, plastic bottle, and can with recoveries ranging from 95.67% to 100.60%. In addition, sensor performance was examined through selectivity, repeatability, and reusability studies. HPLC as a standard determination method was carried out for accuracy of the voltammetric determination method in the real samples. The developed sensor could be applied to different areas from industry quality control to clinical analysis for the detection of BPA.

A Portable Molecularly Imprinted Sensor for On-Site and Wireless Environmental Bisphenol A Monitoring

The detection of pollutant traces in the public and environmental waters is essential for safety of the population. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a toxic chemical widely used for the production of food storage containers by plastic industries to increase the storage ability. However, the insertion of BPA in water medium leads to serious health risks. Therefore, the development of low-cost, practical, sensitive, and selective devices to monitor BPA levels on-site in the environment is highly needed. Herein, for the first time, we present a homemade portable potentiostat device integrated to a laser-scribed graphene (LSG) sensor for BPA detection as a practical environmental pollutant monitoring tool. Recently, there has been an increasing need regarding the development of graphene-based electrochemical transducers (e.g., electrodes) to obtain efficient biosensing platforms. LSG platform is combined with molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) matrix. LSG electrodes were modified with gold nanostructures and PEDOT polymer electrodeposition to create a specific MIP biomimetic receptor for ultrasensitive BPA detection. The sensing device has a Bluetooth connection, wirelessly connected to a smartphone providing high sensitivity and sensitivity (LOD: 3.97 nM in a linear range of .01–10 µM) toward BPA. Two commercial bottled water samples, tap water, commercial milk, and baby formula samples have been used to validate the reliability of the portable sensor device.

Ratiometric electrochemical sensor for bisphenol A detection using a glassy carbon electrode modified with a poly(toluidine blue)/gold nanoparticle composite

A ratiometric electrochemical sensor for bisphenol A (BPA) detection is developed using a glassy carbon electrode modified with a poly(toluidine blue)/gold nanoparticle composite (PTB/AuNP/GCE). The ratiometric signal, namely, the oxidation peak current ratio of BPA to PTB, increases linearly with BPA concentration in the 0.2-5.0 μM range, with a detection limit of 0.15 μM. The electrochemical mechanism of BPA is studied at the PTB/AuNP/GCE, and the results show that BPA undergoes an electrooxidation process of two electrons and two protons at the PTB/AuNP/GCE. The proposed sensor has high sensitivity, high stability and good selectivity. The application of BPA in water samples is successfully verified using the proposed ratiometric electrochemical sensor.
