CoSn Alloy-based three-dimensional ordered multistage porous composite towards effective polysulfide confinement and catalytic conversion in lithium‐sulfur batteries

GO-CoNiP New Composite Material Modified Separator for Long Cycle Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur batteries with high capacity are considered the most promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems. Mitigating the shuttle reaction and promoting catalytic conversion within the battery are major challenges in the development of high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries. To solve these problems, a novel composite material GO-CoNiP is synthesized in this study. The material has excellent conductivity and abundant active sites to adsorb polysulfides and improve reaction kinetics within the battery. The initial capacity of the GO-CoNiP separator battery at 1 C is 889.4 mAh g-1 , and the single-cycle decay is 0.063% after 1000 cycles. In the 4 C high-rate test, the single-cycle decay is only 0.068% after 400 cycles. The initial capacity is as high as 828.2 mAh g-1 under high sulfur loading (7.3 mg cm-2 ). In addition, high and low-temperature performance tests are performed on the GO-CoNiP separator battery. The first cycle discharge reaches 810.9 mAh g-1 at a low temperature of 0 °C, and the first cycle discharge reaches 1064.8 mAh g-1 at a high temperature of 60 °C, and both can run stably for 120 cycles. In addition, in situ Raman tests are conducted to explain the adsorption of polysulfides by GO-CoNiP from a deeper level.

Niobium-doped conductive TiO-TiO2 heterostructure supported bifunctional catalyst for efficient and stable zinc-air batteries

The development of highly active and durable nonprecious metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is important for rechargeable zinc-air batteries. Herein, a three-dimensional conductive niobium-doped TiO-TiO2 heterostructure supported ZIF-67-derived Co-NC bifunctional catalyst was fabricated. In the Co-NC@Nb-TiOx catalyst, the Nb doping promoted the formation of TiO-TiO2 heterojunction support, enhanced its conductivity and stability and provided strong electron metal-support interaction between Co-NC and Nb-TiOx. Also, the supported Co-NC nanoparticles provided abundant active sites with excellent ORR/OER activity. Experimental analysis reveals that the high OER activity of Co-NC@Nb-TiOx can be attributed to the in-situ generated CoOOH species. It exhibits excellent ORR activity, as shown by its onset potential (0.95 V vs. RHE) and half-wave potential (0.86 V vs. RHE). Its OER overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 is 480 mV. The zinc-air battery realizes outstanding cycling stability over 225 h cycles tested at 10 mA cm-2. This work demonstrates the importance of designing highly stable metal oxide-supported catalysts in electrochemical energy conversion devices.

Kinetic Acceleration of Lithium Polysulfide Conversion via a Copper-Iridium Alloying Catalytic Strategy in Li-S Batteries

To solve the shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), a porous N-doped carbon-supported copper-iridium alloy catalyst composite (CuIr/NC) has been synthesized and served as a modified cathode sulfur host for lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). The metal-organic framework-derived calcined carbon frameworks build efficient conductive channels for fast ion/electron transport. Furthermore, alloying noble metals Ir with thiophilic metal Cu provides abundant active sites to effectively capture LiPSs and accelerate the catalytic conversion process, originating from modulating the surface electronic structure of the metal Cu by introducing Ir atoms to affect the 3d-orbital distribution. All of the above are strongly supported by a range of characterization studies and density functional theory calculations. Benefiting from the above advantages, the LSBs generally show satisfactory cycling performance. Apart from exhibiting a terrific initial specific capacity of 1288 mA h g^-1 at 0.2 C, they can also keep long-term cycling stability under a high current density up to 5 C together with a slow specific capacity decay ratio (0.033%) per cycle after 1000 cycles. In addition, it is worth mentioning that a high areal capacity (4.7 mA h cm^-2) with a low E/S ratio (6.2 μL mg^-1) could still be accomplished at higher sulfur loading (4.3 mg cm^-2).
