Family health task implementation and the health status of diabetes mellitus patients: A correlational study

Introduction: Chronic conditions due to diabetes cause changes in patients’ health status and their family has importantroles in the health care. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between family health task implementation and the health status of diabetics. Design and methods: An observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach was used, while the respondents consisted of 327 family caregivers and 327 diabetes mellitus patients. This study used both family health task implementation and Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) questionnaires. Results: The result of the Pearson Product Moment test showed a correlation coefficient of 0.593 and a 0.000 p-value (α 0.05). Conclusions: It was concluded that there was a fairly strong relationship between family health task implementation and the health status of diabetes mellitus patients. Nursing intervention is needed to improve the implementation of family health tasks.

Near Infrared LEDs-Based Non-Invasive Blood Sugar Testing for Detecting Blood Sugar Levels on Diabetic Care

Diabetes Mellitus, with its rapid development and various complications that have caused it, has become one of the deadliest diseases in the world. Early detection efforts to raise blood sugar levels can help to avoid a variety of complications. Measuring devices are needed to find out blood sugar levels detect how much sugar is in the blood. The blood sugar measuring device is invasive by taking blood from capillaries tested both in the lab and using portable testing instruments. The use of this tool results in discomfort, pain, and trauma for the patient. The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of sensitivity of the NIR LED sensor on the thumb to the little finger to the reading of light reflections coming out of body tissues.. Currently, the index finger is often used as a medium to find out how much blood sugar is in non-invasive blood sugar measurements. The other four fingers' sensitivity is unknown at this time. Because the use of the index finger, which is located in the middle, can make activities difficult at times, information on the sensitivity level of the other fingers is required. This paper discusses the sensitivity of placing the NIR LED sensor on the five fingers to determine the most sensitive finger with the best response. Based on the testing results of 15 samples, Although the index finger receives the most significant stress, the correlation and linear regression tests show that the thumb has the closest relationship with the R2 = 0.6841. With this research, a test instrument with higher sensitivity for Diabetes can be developed by placing the sensor in a comfortable area. The implication is that the results of this study can be recommended to use the thumb as an alternative to the placement of the NIR LED sensor to measure blood sugar levels non-invasively in DM patients.

Precision health care strategies for older adults with diabetes in Indonesia: a Delphi consensus study

BACKGROUND Studies on precision health care for older adults with diabetes in Indonesia are still limited. This study was aimed to reach the experts consensus on the suitable precision health care strategies for older adults with diabetes. METHODS A total of 10 experts (4 physicians, 4 nurses, and 2 dietitians) agreed to participate in the 3-round interview using Delphi technique. The experts should have at least 5 years of experience in teaching or working as health professionals in a hospital. RESULTS Consensus was reached that precision health care consisted of eight elements: self-management, interdisciplinary collaborative practice, personalized genetic or lifestyle factors, glycemic target, patient preferences, glycemic control, patient priority-directed care, and biodata- or evidence-based practice. The strategies of precision health care for diabetes were divided into seven steps: conducting brief deducting teaching; assessing self-management level and risk of cardiovascular disease; organizing a brainstorming session among patients to exchange experiences on glycemic target and specific target behavior; making a list of patients’ needs and ranking the priorities; setting a goal and writing action; doing follow-up; and reporting the goal attempts. CONCLUSIONS The eight elements of precision health care provided the basis of precision health care strategies for diabetic older adults, which are the real and measurable strategies for precision health care implementation in clinical settings.

Sundanese culture-sensitive family nursing model improves behavior in controlling blood sugar in elderly patients with diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease that has associations with an unhealthy lifestyle. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a Sudanese culture-sensitive family nursing model on improving family behavior in controlling blood sugar in elderly patients with diabetes. This study used a quasi-experimental design, involving 57 respondents in the intervention group and 57 respondents in the control group of families containing elderly members with diabetes. Samples were taken by multistage cluster sampling, and univariate, bivariate, multivariate statistical analysis was applied. The results showed an increase in mean family behavior and a decrease in mean blood sugar levels after the intervention model, with p-value=0.000. Sundanese culture-sensitive family nursing models can improve family behavior in controlling blood sugar in elderly patients with diabetes and it is recommended as a pattern of a culture-based approach in the treatment of the elderly with diabetes.
