Abstract
Phages play a crucial role in orchestrating top-down control within microbial communities, influencing the dynamics of the composting process. Despite this, the impact of phage-induced thermophilic bacterial lysis on humification remains ambiguous. This study investigates the effects of phage lysate, derived explicitly from Geobacillus subterraneus, on simulated composting, employing ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA sequencing techniques. The results show the significant role of phage lysate in expediting humus formation over 40 days. Notably, the rapid transformation of protein-like precursors released from phage-induced lysis of the host bacterium resulted in a 14.8 % increase in the proportion of lignins/CRAM-like molecules. Furthermore, the phage lysate orchestrated a succession in bacterial communities, leading to the enrichment of core microbes, exemplified by the prevalence of Geobacillus. Through network analysis, it was revealed that these enriched microbes exhibit a capacity to convert protein and lignin into essential building blocks such as amino acids and phenols. Subsequently, these components were polymerized into humus, aligning with the phenol-protein theory. These findings enhance our understanding of the intricate microbial interactions during composting and provide a scientific foundation for developing engineering-ready composting humification regulation technologies.

Abstract
Leaves of Camellia sinensis plants are used to produce tea, one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, containing a wide variety of bioactive compounds that help to promote human health. Tea cultivation is economically important, and its sustainable production can have significant consequences in providing agricultural opportunities and lowering extreme poverty. Soil parameters are well known to affect the quality of the resultant leaves and consequently, the understanding of the diversity and functions of soil microorganisms in tea gardens will provide insight to harnessing soil microbial communities to improve tea yield and quality. Current analyses indicate that tea garden soils possess a rich composition of diverse microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) of which the bacterial Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, Firmicutes and Chloroflexi and fungal Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Glomeromycota are the prominent groups. When optimized, these microbes' function in keeping garden soil ecosystems balanced by acting on nutrient cycling processes, biofertilizers, biocontrol of pests and pathogens, and bioremediation of persistent organic chemicals. Here, we summarize research on the activities of (tea garden) soil microorganisms as biofertilizers, biological control agents and as bioremediators to improve soil health and consequently, tea yield and quality, focusing mainly on bacterial and fungal members. Recent advances in molecular techniques that characterize the diverse microorganisms in tea gardens are examined. In terms of viruses there is a paucity of information regarding any beneficial functions of soil viruses in tea gardens, although in some instances insect pathogenic viruses have been used to control tea pests. The potential of soil microorganisms is reported here, as well as recent techniques used to study microbial diversity and their genetic manipulation, aimed at improving the yield and quality of tea plants for sustainable production.

Abstract
Viruses are critical for regulating microbial communities and biogeochemical processes affecting carbon/nutrient cycling. However, the role of soil phages in controlling microbial physiological traits and intrinsic dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties remains largely unknown. Herein, microcosm experiments with different soil phage concentrates (including no-added phages, inactive phages, and three dilutions of active phages) at two temperatures (15 °C and 25 °C) were conducted to disclose the nutrient and DOM dynamics associated with viral lysing. Results demonstrated three different phases of viral impacts on CO2 emission at both temperatures, and phages played a role in maintaining Q10 within bounds. At both temperatures, microbial nutrient limitations (especially P limitation) were alleviated by viral lysing as determined by extracellular enzyme activity (decreased Vangle with active phages). Additionally, the re-utilization of lysate-derived DOM by surviving microbes stimulated an increase of microbial metabolic efficiency and recalcitrant DOM components (e.g., SUV254, SUV260 and HIX). This research provides direct experimental evidence that the "viral shuttle" exists in soils, whereby soil phages increase recalcitrant DOM components. Our findings advance the understanding of viral controls on soil biogeochemical processes, and provide a new perspective for assessing whether soil phages provide a net "carbon sink" vs. "carbon source" in soils.

Abstract
Viruses are the most abundant biological entities in the ocean and show great diversity in terms of size, host specificity, and infection cycle. Lytic viruses induce host cell lysis to release their progeny and thereby redirect nutrients from higher to lower trophic levels. Studies continue to show that marine viruses can be ingested by nonhost organisms. However, not much is known about the role of viral particles as a nutrient source and whether they possess a nutritional value to the grazing organisms. This review seeks to assess the elemental composition and biogeochemical relevance of marine viruses, including roseophages, which are a highly abundant group of bacteriophages in the marine environment. We place a particular emphasis on the phylum Nucleocytoviricota (NCV) (formerly known as nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses [NCLDVs]), which comprises some of the largest viral particles in the marine plankton that are well in the size range of prey for marine grazers. Many NCVs contain lipid membranes in their capsid that are rich carbon and energy sources, which further increases their nutritional value. Marine viruses may thus be an important nutritional component of the marine plankton, which can be reintegrated into the classical food web by nonhost organism grazing, a process that we coin the "viral sweep." Possibilities for future research to resolve this process are highlighted and discussed in light of current technological advancements.

Abstract
In aquatic environments, the consensus of viral impact on bacterial carbon metabolism with the nutrient environment as an important axis is limited. Henceforth, we explored the viral regulation of carbon-based bacterial growth efficiency (BGE) in a set of freshwater systems from French Massif Central, which were broadly classified based on two trophic statuses: eutrophic and non-eutrophic lakes. Comparative analysis showed that microbial abundances (viruses and bacteria) were 3-fold higher in eutrophic compared with non-eutrophic lakes, and so were bacterial production and viral lytic infection. The observed variability in BGE (10-60%) was explained by the uncoupling between bacterial respiration and production. Viruses through selective lysis of susceptible host communities had an antagonistic impact on BGE in the eutrophic lakes, whereas the release of substrates via viral shunt exerted a synergistic influence on the carbon metabolism of non-targeted host populations in non-eutrophic lakes. The decisive effect of the two individual processes (i.e., lysis and substrate release) on BGE was supported by regressions of bacterial abundance as a function of bacterial production, which is considered as a proxy of top-down processes. The role of viruses through their negative impact via mortality and positive impact via substrate supply can eventually have implications on carbon transfer through bacterioplankton in freshwaters.

Abstract
Large amounts of terrigenous organic matter (TOM) are delivered to the ocean every year. However, removal processes of TOM in the ocean are still poorly constrained. Here, we report results from a 339-day dark incubation experiment with a unique system holding a vertically stratified freshwater-seawater column. The quality and quantity of dissolved organic matter (DOM), RNA-based size-fraction microbial communities, and environmental factors were high-frequency-monitored. Microbial processes impacted TOM composition, including an increased DOM photobleaching rate with incubation time. The mixed layer had changed the bacterial community structure, diversity, and higher oxygen consumption rate. A two-end member modeling analysis suggested that estimated nutrient concentrations and prokaryotic abundance were lower, and total dissolved organic carbon was higher than that of the measured values. These results imply that DOM biodegradation was stimulated during freshwater-seawater mixing. In the bottom layer, fluorescent DOM components increased with the incubation time and were significantly positively related to highly unsaturated, oxygenated, and presumably aromatic compound molecular formulas. These results suggest that surfaced-derived TOM sinking leads to increased DOM transformation and likely results in carbon storage in the bottom water. Overall, these results suggest that microbial transforming TOM plays more important biogeochemical roles in estuaries and coastal oceans than what we know before.
