Levels and profiles of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofurans in raw and treated water from water treatment plants in Shenzhen, China

Halogenated aromatic pollutants in routine animal-derived food of south China: Occurrence, sources, and dietary intake risks

Halogenated aromatic pollutants (HAPs) including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) exhibit diverse toxicities and bio-accumulation in animals, thereby imposing risks on human via animal-derived food (ADF) consumption. Here we examined these HAPs in routine ADFs from South China and observed that PBDEs and PCBs showed statistically higher concentrations than PCDD/Fs and PBDD/Fs. PCDD/Fs and PCBs in these ADFs were mainly from the polluted feed and habitat of animals, except PCDD/Fs in egg, which additionally underwent selective biotransformation/progeny transfer after the maternal intake of PCDD/F-polluted stuff. PBDEs and PBDD/Fs were mostly derived from the extensive use of deca-BDE and their polluted environments. Significant interspecific differences were mainly observed for DL-PCBs and partly for PBDD/Fs and PBDEs, which might be caused by their distinct transferability/biodegradability in animals and the different living habit and habitat of animals. The dietary intake doses (DIDs) of these HAPs via ADF consumption were all highest for toddlers, then teenagers and adults. Milk, egg, and fish contributed most to the DIDs and risks for toddlers and teenagers, which results of several cities exceeded the recommended thresholds and illustrated noteworthy risks. Pork, fish, and egg were the top three risk contributors for adults, which carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were both acceptable. Notably, PBDD/Fs showed the lowest concentrations but highest contributions to the total risks of these HAPs, thereby meriting continuous attention.

Investigating the presence of dioxins in drinking water: implications for public health

The presence of highly toxic dioxins, specifically polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), in drinking water is a matter of great concern due to their long-lasting nature and harmful effects. In this study, we detected three out of the five dioxin congeners: 2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (TCDD), 1, 2, 3, 7, 8-pentachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (PeCDD), and octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD). The investigation revealed that three dioxins were present in water samples of winter season, while TCDD and OCDD were found in the summer season. The geometric mean concentrations of PCDDs were 229.9 ng/L (winter) and 108.4 ng/L (summer), exceeded the maximum contaminant level of 30 pg/L set by the USEPA in surface water. The estimated daily intake of PCDDs for residents through drinking water was 273.97 ng-WHO2005-TEQ/kg/days during winter and 78.875 ng-WHO2005-TEQ/kg/days during summer. Our study emphasizes the urgent need for further research on persistent organic pollutants in drinking water to safeguard public health and community well-being.

Consideration of unmeasured micropollutants released from WWTP for potential impact estimations

During wastewater treatment, micropollutants are only partly eliminated and may present a risk for human health and aquatic ecosystems. The potential impacts these substances may have are currently underestimated due to the lack in available concentrations that lie below the limit of quantification (LOQ) for an important set of micropollutants. Here, the potential impacts due to 261 organic micropollutants on human health and aquatic environments were investigated at the scale of France. Even with concentrations below the LOQ, certain micropollutants were found to have a significant potential impact. For unmeasured concentrations, a global concentration distribution built from several datasets with different LOQ was used. By disregarding the unmeasured micropollutants, the potential impacts have been underestimated by >300 % on both human health and aquatic environments. Certain substances, such as hydrazine, endrin, or 2,3,7,8-TetraCDD, could lead to very strong potential impacts, even with unmeasured concentration levels. Moreover, the usual convention of LOQ/2 to replace unmeasured concentrations also appeared to overestimate the potential impact. The present work can be adapted to any other compartment or geographical context.

Fate of dioxins in a municipal solid waste incinerator with state-of-the-art air pollution control devices in China

The variation of municipal solid waste (MSW) components and the improvement of incinerators have an obvious effect on dioxin emissions. However, there is a knowledge gap on dioxin distribution characteristics following China's implementation of MSW classification. To reveal the fate of dioxins under ultra-low emission standards in leading cities in China, a systematic investigation was carried out in a typical modern MSW incinerator in Shenzhen, China. The dioxin mass balance was built using improved models, which included expanded samples, e.g., the leachate, the raw gas and raw ash from boiler, and the chemicals and residuals from air pollution control devices (APCDs). The results indicated a positive dioxin balance of 0.88 μg I-TEQ/t MSW according to the conventional method containing fly ash, bottom ash, and stack gas. In the new model revealing dioxin characteristics after APCDs, a higher value of 0.89 μg I-TEQ/t MSW was found due to the leachate, slaked lime, and activated carbon-containing dioxins. The distribution of dioxins in output samples of fly ash, bottom ash, stack gas, and leachate were 149.0 %, 41.8 %, 1.6 %, and 0.6 % of MSW, respectively. For incineration itself, the balance was 0.85 μg I-TEQ/t MSW, which indicated the possible release owing to the "memory effect" for the other two methods. This study provided new insight for the accurate estimation of dioxin emissions and a typical case report of MSW incineration with ultra-low dioxin emissions.

Occurrence and exposure risk evaluation of polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) in drinking water

Although polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) can be generated and detected in drinking water, their occurrence and potential health risks to humans via drinking water ingestion are not well known. In this study, 11 PHCZs were screened in drinking water samples from Wuhan, the most populous city in central China. The total concentration of PHCZs could be up to 53.48 ng/L with a median level of 8.19 ng/L, which was comparable to polychlorinated biphenyls and poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances reported in the literatures for drinking water. Composition profiles revealed that 3,6-dichlorocarbazole, 3-chlorocarbazole, 3-bromocarbazole and 3,6-dibromocarbazole were the predominant PHCZ congeners in the tested samples. Regional differences in the levels and patterns of PHCZs suggested that anthropogenic releases should be the dominant source compared to natural generation. Boiling of the water samples caused no significant change in PHCZs concentrations after correcting the volume change due to evaporation. Potential health risks associated to the levels of PHCZs in drinking water were assessed using the toxic equivalent (TEQs) method. The estimated daily intake of PHCZs via drinking water ingestion is up to 0.38 pg-TEQ/kg body weight/day for infants, nearly 4.5 times higher than that for adults, and appears to reach the maximum permissible concentration set by certain authority agencies. Overall, drinking water ingestion represents an important exposure pathway for PHCZs. This is the first comprehensive study on the abundance and health risks of PHCZs in drinking water.

A review of levels and profiles of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in different environmental media from China

This review provides a summary of the levels and profiles of PCDD/Fs throughout China, as reported in peer reviewed literatures since 1997. The literature shows that PCDD/Fs are widespread in various environmental media including air, water, sediment, and soil. PCDD/Fs concentrations in air were relatively low in most regions, with only a few areas considered polluted. Many studies reported seasonal trends, with higher and lower concentrations in winter and summer, respectively. We analyzed the factors affecting the concentrations of dioxins in air and summarized the causes of seasonal changes. As hydrophobic organic compounds, PCDD/Fs readily accumulate in sediments. The distribution of dioxins in sediment in Bohai Sea area was mainly introduced and the factors affecting concentrations of dioxins were studied. The levels of dioxins in soil in different regions varied greatly, with higher levels in areas close to pollution sources. We examined the dioxins concentrations in soil in places where the levels were very low (including the Tibet Plateau and other remote areas), contaminated areas, and other areas. Apart from the contaminated areas, the dioxins concentrations in soil were low. The results of the relatively low number of studies that have investigated PCDD/Fs in water have reported no obvious pollution in some waters, apart from Dongting Lake. PCDD/Fs levels across China are similar to those worldwide. Point sources, mainly related to local geographic, economic, and historical factors, were the most common source of contamination. E-waste dismantling and chemical production has the greatest impact on PCDD/Fs in different media.

PCDD/PCDFs and PCBs in the irrigation water in Egypt: levels, patterns, and potential sources

The contamination levels of PCDD/PCDFs in irrigation water are the most rarely studied throughout the world. The major problem in Egypt is the lack of studies and statistics about these contaminants of POPs in irrigation water. Therefore, this study is the first comprehensive report to elucidate the estimation and sources of PCDD/PCDFs and PCBs in irrigation water from Egypt and rare for worldwide may provide a reference to future studies of POPs compounds in irrigation water of Egypt. A total of 24 irrigated water samples were collected from different irrigation canals which are adjacent to industrial areas from six Egyptian governorates (Bani Swef, El-Giza, El-Sharkeya, El-Menoufeya, El-Gharbeya, and Alexandria). The study shows that irrigation water canals were contaminated with low levels of PCDDs/PCDFs, which were 0.95 pgWHO-TEQ/l, and the total of PCDD/PCDFs and dl-PCBs were 2.06 pgWHO-TEQ/l with contamination ranging between 0.88 to 2.97 pgWHO-TEQ/l while the levels of indicator PCBs were 18.52 ng/l and ranged between 0.39 to 165.6 ng/l. The most predominant dioxins congeners were HpCDD, OCDD, HpCDF, and OCDF while for dl-PCBs were PCB105 and PCB118, and for ndl-PCBs was PCB138. The areas with recent urbanization and industrialization were more contaminated with PCBs than the unindustrialized area. Lightly to moderately chlorinated congeners dominated the PCB profiles. The major sources for these contaminants were fire bricks followed by textile industries closer to the located sampling sites. The detected pattern was found to be similar to the patterns reported in the air by other studies. Although the concentrations of the studied POPs are found to be low in irrigated water, it may be considered as a potential source of soil pollution due to their accumulation process in the agricultural land and may lead to risk on human health by consuming the agricultural products irrigated by contaminated water.

PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs concentrations in water samples of Taiwan

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (dioxin-like PCBs) have received much public concern worldwide due to their persistence and toxicity. The presence of these compounds in environmental matrices, especially in water bodies, enhances the risk of human exposure to these toxic pollutants. In this study, seventeen 2,3,7,8 chlorinated PCDD/Fs and twelve dl-PCBs were measured in 11 groundwater samples collected throughout Taiwan and 2 surface water samples collected in northern Taiwan. PCDD/F and PCB concentrations in two surface water samples are relatively low, with the average concentrations of 0.038 and 0.001 pg WHO-TEQ/L (7.474 and 1.862 pg L^-1), respectively. As for groundwater samples, PCDD/F concentrations measured range from 0.005 to 3.963 pg WHO-TEQ/L, while dl-PCB concentrations range from 2.5 × 10^-5 to 0.189 pg WHO-TEQ/L. Total WHO-TEQ concentrations range from 0.005 to 3.963 pg WHO-TEQ/L, reflecting serious contamination of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in groundwater at some sampling sites. In term of total PCDD/Fs, PCDDs constitute a significant fraction (77.3%), and OCDD is most abundant, followed by HpCDD/Fs and HxCDD/Fs. PCB 118 is dominant among 12 dl-PCBs measured, followed by PCB 105 and PCB 77. Solid-phase PCDD/Fs generally predominate in water samples and PCDFs are of slightly lower distribution in solid phase in comparison with PCDDs, while PCBs are mainly distributed in dissolved phase. Results of principal component analysis (PCA) indicate that use of PCP and Na-PCP, thermal processes and PCBs-containing products might be the major sources of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in water samples measured.
