Application of apatite particles for remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater: A review and perspectives

With rapid industrial development and population growth, the pollution of soil and groundwater has become a critical concern all over the world. Yet, remediation of contaminated soil and water remains a major challenge. In recent years, apatite has gained a surging interest in environmental remediation because of its high treatment efficiency, low cost, and environmental benignity. This review summarizes recent advances in: (1) natural apatite of phosphate ores and biological source; (2) synthesis of engineered apatite particles (including stabilized or surface-modified apatite nanoparticles); (3) treatment effectiveness of apatite towards various environmental pollutants in soil and groundwater, including heavy metals (e.g., Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, and Ni), inorganic anions (e.g., As oxyanions and F-), radionuclides (e.g., thorium (Th), strontium (Sr), and uranium (U)), and organic pollutants (e.g., antibiotics, dyes, and pesticides); and (4) the removal and/or interaction mechanisms of apatite towards the different contaminants. Lastly, the knowledge or technology gaps are identified and future research needs are proposed.

Treatment technologies for selenium contaminated water: A critical review

Selenium is an indispensable trace element for humans and other organisms; however, excessive selenium in water can jeopardize the aquatic environment. Investigations on the biogeochemical cycle of selenium have shown that anthropogenic activities such as mining, refinery, and coal combustion mainly contribute to aquatic selenium pollution, imposing tremendous risks on ecosystems and human beings. Various technologies thus have been developed recently to treat selenium contaminated water to reduce its environmental impacts. This work provides a critical review on the applications, characteristics, and latest developments of current treatment technologies for selenium polluted water. It first outlines the present status of the characteristics, sources, and toxicity of selenium in water. Selenium treatment technologies are then classified into three categories: 1) physicochemical separation including membrane filtration, adsorption, coagulation/precipitation, 2) redox decontamination including chemical reduction and catalysis, and 3) biological transformation including microbial treatment and constructed wetland. Details of these methods including their overall efficiencies, applicability, advantages and drawbacks, and latest developments are systematically analyzed and compared. Although all these methods are promising in treating selenium in water, further studies are still needed to develop sustainable strategies based on existing and new technologies. Perspectives on future research directions are laid out at the end.

Incorporation of lead into pyromorphite: Effect of anion replacement on lead stabilization

Previous studies demonstrate that the leaching of heavy metals in unreliable waste forms causes serious environmental pollution and health concerns. Thus, research is focused on identifying an effective, safe strategy for disposing of metal-laden solid waste such as lead (Pb). This study evaluated the effect of anion replacement in the structure of pyromorphite (Pb₁₀(PO₄)₆Cl₂, a common mineral phase for Pb sequestering) on Pb stabilization. Phosphate (PO₄^3-) at the tetrahedral pyromorphite site was simultaneously replaced by silicate (SiO₄^4-) and sulphate (SO₄^2-) in a controlled thermal treatment. The lattice expanded with the incorporation of additional SiO₄^4- and SO₄^2-. Furthermore, the unit cell parameters of the solid solutions evolved linearly with an increase in the substitution degree (x in Pb₁₀(SiO₄)_x(SO₄)_x(PO₄)_(6-2x)Cl₂). This research also demonstrated that Pb distributed into amorphous in a PO₄^3--deficient matrix, while asisite (Pb₇SiO₈Cl₂) was formed when the matrix was dominated by SiO₄^4- and SO₄^2-. The leaching results showed the isomorphous substitution in the target system rendered the products less durable towards acidic attack. Moreover, the fully isomorphous-substituted product (x = 3) showed more than two orders of magnitude lower leaching resistance than the PO₄^3--rich phase (x = 0). The lattice expansion, resulting from the isomorphous substitution, suggested that a lower dissolution energy was required in a PO₄^3--deficient matrix. The leaching kinetics pointed to a product with a lower apparent activation energy in the leaching process. The findings of this study provide unique insight into the design and optimization of waste forms for the immobilization of heavy metals.

Uranium removal from mining water using Cu substituted hydroxyapatite

In this study, synthetic copper substituted hydroxyapatite (Cu-Hap), Cu_xCa_10-x(PO₄)₆(OH)₂ were prepared by co-precipitation method and were used as reactive materials in batch experiments to immobilize uranyl. The limit of incorporation of Cu into a single-phased Cu-Hap reached x_Cu ≤1.59. The synthetic Cu-Hap samples obtained with various Cu contents were contacted with synthetic uranyl doped solutions and with real mining waters showing various pH and chemical compositions. A fast and strong decrease of the uranium concentration was observed, followed by the establishment of an equilibrium after 1-4 days of contact with the solutions. Examination of the solid phase after uranium uptake was performed using a combination of techniques. Depending on the composition of the solution and the copper content of the Cu-Hap, various mechanisms of uranium removal were observed. Based on the experimental results and geochemical simulations, it appeared that the main interest for using Cu-Hap is to enlarge the domain of water compositions for which the precipitation of meta-torbernite, (H₃O)_0.4Cu_0.8(UO₂)₂(PO₄)₂·7.6 H₂O is the predominant mechanism associated to the uranium removal, especially for pH > 6.7 where carbonate uranium species are predominant.

Corrosion resistance and antibacterial properties of hydroxyapatite coating induced by gentamicin-loaded polymeric multilayers on magnesium alloys

As a result of their good biocompatibility, bioactivity, and mechanical properties, magnesium (Mg) alloys have received considerable attention as next generation biodegradable implants. Herein, in order to achieve a proper degradation rate and good antibacterial ability, we reported a novel hydroxyapatite coating induced by gentamicin (GS)-loaded polymeric multilayers for the surface treatment of the Mg alloy. The coating was characterized by X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The as-prepared hydroxyapatite coating showed the compact morphology and a well-crystallized apatite structure. This coating could improve the adhesion strength and reduce the corrosion rate of the substrate in simulated body fluid solution. Meanwhile, the drug release and antibacterial experiments demonstrated that the GS loaded specimen revealed a significant antimicrobial performance toward Staphylococcus aureus and had a prolonged release profile of GS, which would be helpful to the long-term bactericidal activity of the Mg implant. This coating showed acceptable biocompatibility via MTT assay and Live/dead staining. Thus, the multilayers-hydroxyapatite coated Mg alloy could improve the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility while delivering vital drugs to the site of implantation.
