The rare earth element (REE) lanthanum (La) induces hormesis in plants

Hormesis determines lifespan

This paper addresses how long lifespan can be extended via multiple interventions, such as dietary supplements [e.g., curcumin, resveratrol, sulforaphane, complex phytochemical mixtures (e.g., Moringa, Rhodiola)], pharmaceutical agents (e.g., metformin), caloric restriction, intermittent fasting, exercise and other activities. This evaluation was framed within the context of hormesis, a biphasic dose response with specific quantitative features describing the limits of biological/phenotypic plasticity for integrative biological endpoints (e.g., cell proliferation, memory, fecundity, growth, tissue repair, stem cell population expansion/differentiation, longevity). Evaluation of several hundred lifespan extending agents using yeast, nematode (Caenorhabditis elegans), multiple insect and other invertebrate and vertebrate models (e.g., fish, rodents), revealed they responded in a manner [average (mean/median) and maximum lifespans] consistent with the quantitative features [i.e., 30-60% greater at maximum (Hormesis Rule)] of the hormetic dose response. These lifespan extension features were independent of biological model, inducing agent, endpoints measured and mechanism. These findings indicate that hormesis describes the capacity to extend life via numerous agents and activities and that the magnitude of lifespan extension is modest, in the percentage, not fold, range. These findings have important implications for human aging, genetic diseases/environmental stresses and lifespan extension, as well as public health practices and long-term societal resource planning.

Cytotoxicity and hemolysis of rare earth ions and nanoscale/bulk oxides (La, Gd, and Yb): Interaction with lipid membranes and protein corona formation

The widespread application of rare earth elements (REEs) has raised concerns about their potential release into the environment and subsequent ingestion by humans. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the cytotoxicity of REEs. Here, we investigated the interactions between three typical REEs (La, Gd, and Yb) ions as well as their nanometer/μm-sized oxides and red blood cells (RBCs), a plausible contact target for nanoparticles when they enter the bloodstream. Hemolysis of REEs at 50-2000 μmol L^-1 was examined to simulate their cytotoxicity under medical or occupational exposure. We found that the hemolysis due to the exposure of REEs was highly dependent on their concentration, and the cytotoxicity followed the order of La³⁺ > Gd³⁺ > Yb³⁺. The cytotoxicity of REE ions (REIs) is higher than REE oxides (REOs), while nanometer-sized REO caused more hemolysis than that μm-sized REO. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), ROS quenching experiment, as well as the detection of lipid peroxidation, confirmed that REEs causes cell membrane rupture by ROS-related chemical oxidation. In addition, we found that the formation of a protein corona on REEs increased the steric repulsion between REEs and cell membranes, hence mitigating the cytotoxicity of REEs. The theoretical simulation indicated the favorable interaction of REEs with phospholipids and proteins. Therefore, our findings provide a mechanistic explanation for the cytotoxicity of REEs to RBCs once they have entered the blood circulation system of organisms.

A critical review on the development of lanthanum-engineered biochar for environmental applications

Biochar and lanthanum (La) have been widely used in environment. However, there is a lack of knowledge and perspective on the development of La-engineered biochar (LEB) for environmental applications. This review shows that LEBs with a variety of La species via pre-/post-doping routes are developed for environmental applications. Specifically, precipitation, gelation, and calcination are the common sub-processes involved in the pre-/post-doping of La on the resultant LEB. The dominant La species for LEBs is La(OH)₃, which is formed through precipitation of La ions with various bases. Various La carbonates, e.g., LaOHCO₃, La₂(CO₃)₃, La₂CO₅, and NaLa(CO₃)₂, are also involved in the preparation of LEBs. The LEBs are high-efficient in the adsorption of phosphate, arsenic, antimonate and fluoride ions, attributed to the strong affinity of La to oxyanions and Lewis hard base. Lanthanum is also favorable for co-doping with transition metal species to further enhance the performances in adsorption or catalysis. This review also analyzes the prospects and future challenges for the preparation and application of LEBs in environment. Finally, this review is beneficial to inspire new breakthroughs on the preparation and environmental application of LEBs.

Locked up Inside the Vessels: Rare Earth Elements Are Transferred and Stored in the Conductive Tissues of the Accumulating Fern Dryopteris erythrosora

Rare earth elements (REEs) are strategic metals strongly involved in low-carbon energy conversion. However, these emerging contaminants are increasingly disseminated into ecosystems, raising concern regarding their toxicity. REE-accumulating plants are crucial subjects to better understand REE transfer to the trophic chain but are also promising phytoremediation tools. In this analysis, we deciphered REE accumulation sites in the REE-accumulating fern Dryopteris erythrosora by synchrotron X-ray μfluorescence (μXRF). This technique allows a high-resolution and in situ analysis of fresh samples or frozen-hydrated cross sections of different organs of the plant. In the sporophyte, REEs were translocated from the roots to the fronds by the xylem sap and were stored within the xylem conductive system. The comparison of REE distribution and accumulation levels in the healthy and necrotic parts of the frond shed light on the differential mobility between light and heavy REEs. Furthermore, the comparison emphasized that necrotized areas were not the main REE-accumulating sites. Finally, the absence of cell-to-cell mobility of REEs in the gametophyte suggested the absence of REE-compatible transporters in photosynthetic tissues. These results provide valuable knowledge on the physiology of REE-accumulating ferns to understand the REE cycle in biological systems and the expansion of phytotechnologies for REE-enriched or REE-contaminated soils.

Hormesis Responses of Growth and Photosynthetic Characteristics in Lonicera japonica Thunb. to Cadmium Stress: Whether Electric Field Can Improve or Not?

"Hormesis" is considered a dose-response phenomenon mainly observed at hyperaccumulator plants under heavy metals stress. In this study, the effects of electric fields on hormesis responses in Lonicera japonica Thunb. under cadmium (Cd) treatments were investigated by assessing the plant growth and photosynthetic characteristics. Under Cd treatments without electric fields, the parameters of plant growth and photosynthetic characteristics increased significantly when exposed to 5 mg L^-1 Cd, and decreased slightly when exposed to 25 mg L^-1 Cd, showing an inverted U-shaped trend, which confirmed that low concentration Cd has a hormesis effect on L. japonica. Under electric fields, different voltages significantly promoted the inverted U-shaped trend of the hormesis effect on the plant, especially by 2 V cm^-1 voltage. Under 2 V cm^-1 voltage, the dry weight of the root and leaf biomass exposed to 5 mg L^-1 Cd increased significantly by 38.38% and 42.14%, and the photosynthetic pigment contents and photosynthetic parameters were also increased significantly relative to the control, indicating that a suitable electric field provides better improvements for the hormesis responses of the plant under Cd treatments. The synergistic benefits of the 5 mg L^-1 Cd and 2 V cm^-1 electric field in terms of the enhanced hormesis responses of growth and photosynthetic characteristics could contribute to the promoted application of electro-phytotechnology.

Surface Biofunctionalization of Gadolinium Phosphate Nanobunches for Boosting Osteogenesis/Chondrogenesis Differentiation

In order to achieve smart biomedical micro/nanomaterials, promote interaction with biomolecules, improve osteogenic/chondrogenic differentiation, exhibit better dispersion in bone implants and ultimately maximize functionality, we innovatively and successfully designed and synthesized polymer PBLG-modified GdPO₄·H₂O nanobunches by hydroxylation, silylation and glutamylation processes. The effects of different feeding ratios on the surface coating of GdPO₄·H₂O with Si-OH, the grafting γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) and the in situ ring-opening polymerization reaction of poly(g-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PBLG) were investigated, and the physical and chemical properties were characterized in detail. When GdPO₄·H₂O@SiO₂-APS:NCA = 4:1, the PBLG-g-GdPO₄·H₂O grafting rate was 5.93%, with good stability and dispersion in degradable polymeric materials. However, the MRI imaging signal was sequentially weakened as the modification process proceeded. Despite this, the biological effects had surprising findings. All the modifiers at appropriate concentrations were biocompatible and biologically active and the biomacromolecules of COL I and COL II in particular were expressed at least 3 times higher in GdPO₄·H₂O@SiO₂ compared to the PLGA. This indicates that the appropriate surface modification and functionalization of gadolinium-containing micro/nanomaterials can promote interaction with cells and encourage bone regeneration by regulating biomacromolecules and can be used in the field of biomedical materials.

The stimulatory effect and mechanism of low-dose lanthanum on soybean leaf cells

Light rare earth elements (LREEs) have been long used in agriculture (i.e., mainly via aerially applied LREE fertilizers) based on the fact that low-dose LREEs promote plant growth. Meanwhile, the toxic effects of low-dose LREEs on organisms have also been found. However, the cellular and molecular mechanism of low-dose LREEs acting on organisms remain unclear. Plants are at the beginning of food chains, so it is critical to uncover the cellular and molecular mechanism of low-dose LREEs on plants. Here, lanthanum (La) and soybean were the representatives of LREEs and plants, respectively. The effects of low-dose La on soybean leaves were investigated, and the stimulatory effect and mechanism of low-dose LREEs on leaf cells were revealed. Specifically, clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) activated by low-dose La is an influx channel for La in soybean leaf cells. The intracellular La and La-activated CME jointly disturbed multiple forms of intracellular homeostasis, including metallic element homeostasis, redox homeostasis, gene expression homeostasis. The disturbed homeostasis either stimulated cell growth or caused damage to the plasma membrane of soybean leaf cells. These results provide new insights for clarifying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of low-dose LREEs as a class of stimulators instead of nutrients to stimulate plants.

Hormetic activation of nano-sized rare earth element terbium on growth, PSII photochemistry, antioxidant status and phytohormone regulation in Lemnaminor

Soils contaminated with rare earth elements (REEs) can damage agriculture by causing physiological disorders in plants which are evaluated as the main connection of the human food chain. A biphasic dose response with excitatory responses to low concentrations and inhibitory/harmful responses to high concentrations has been defined as hormesis. However, not much is clear about the ecological effects and potential risks of REEs to plants. For this purpose, here we showed the impacts of different concentrations of nano terbium (Tb) applications (5-10-25-50-100-250-500 mg L^-1) on the accumulation of endogeneous certain ions and hormones, chlorophyll fluoresence, photochemical reaction capacity and antioxidant activity in duckweed (Lemna minor). Tb concentrations less than 100 mg L^-1 increased the contents of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P), potassium (K⁺), calcium (Ca²⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), manganese (Mn²⁺) and iron (Fe²⁺). Chlorophyll fluorescence (F_v/F_m and F_v/F_o) was suppressed under 250-500 mg L^-1 Tb. In addition, Tb toxicity affected the trapped energy adversely by the active reaction center of photosystem II (PSII) and led to accumulation of inactive reaction centers, thus lowering the detected level of electron transport from photosystem II (PSII) to photosystem I (PSI). On the other hand, 5-100 mg L^-1 Tb enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), NADPH oxidase (NOX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) and glutathione S-transferase (GST). Tb (5-50 mg L^-1) supported the maintenance of cellular redox status by promoting antioxidant pathways involved in the ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle. In addition to the antioxidant system, the contents of some hormones such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), cytokinin (CK) and salicylic acid (SA) were also induced in the presence of 5-100 mg L^-1 Tb. In addition, the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) were controlled through ascorbate (AsA) regeneration and effective hormonal modulation in L. minor. However, this induction in the antioxidant system and phytohormone contents could not be resumed after applications higher than 250 mg L^-1 Tb. TBARS and H₂O₂, which indicate the level of lipid peroxidation, increased. The results in this study showed that Tb at appropriate concentrations has great potential to confer tolerance of duckweed by supporting the antioxidant system, protecting the biochemical reactions of photosystems and improving hormonal regulation.

Mechanism of macroalgae Gracilaria bailiniae responding to cadmium and lanthanum

Macroalgae can accumulate a wide array of metals, leading to their appliance as biomonitors of aquatic environments. With the rapid development of industrial and agricultural-based activities, Cd pollution in aquatic environments is considered an increasingly severe problem worldwide. Although La could alleviate the Cd stress in higher terrestrial plants, the response mechanisms of macroalgae to Cd and La are unknown. Along these lines, in this work, Cd significantly affected the growth, internal cellular structure, photosynthesis, pigment content, antioxidant enzyme activity, and lipid peroxidation level of G. bailiniae. However, the presence of La alleviated these adverse effects from Cd. Furthermore, the response mechanism of G. bailiniae to Cd was attributed to the self-antioxidant ability enhancement, membrane defense, and programmed-cellular regulation. However, the presence of La mediated the biosynthesis of both flavonoids and lipids, which inhibited the Cd accumulation, modulated algal stress signalling networks, renewed the impaired chlorophyll molecule, maintained the activity of the crucial enzyme, enhanced antioxidant ability, and maintained the stabilization of redox homeostasis, alleviating the adverse impact from Cd and improve the growth of G. bailiniae. The experimental results successfully demonstrate a new detoxicant to alleviate Cd stress, promoting a more comprehensive array of macroalgal applications.

Phytotoxicity effect concentrations (ECx) for Ce, Nd and Eu added to soil relative to total and bioaccessible soil REE concentrations, and tissue REE accumulations

Toxicity thresholds (EC_x) for radish, tomato, and durum wheat growth endpoints (shoot length, shoot mass, root length) to Ce, Nd or Eu added to a black organic soil were determined from 14-day dose-response growth assays. EC₁₀ expressed as total soil [REE] had a more than twenty-fold range, from 337 mg/kg to more than >8000 mg/kg. Averaged over all REEs and endpoints, durum wheat was more tolerant than radish and tomato; and averaged over all endpoints, Eu appeared to be the most phytotoxic of the three REEs. Bioaccessibility of each REE was determined by extraction with 0.01 M CaCl₂, which for all three REEs in this soil was quite low, <0.10% of total. However, bioaccessibility of Eu was five or six times greater than that for Ce and Nd, and thus could explain its apparently greater toxicity, namely that Eu was more likely to be accumulated at the site of toxic action in the plant. To discern inherent toxicity from enhanced bioaccumulation, concentration of each REE in root and shoot tissues was determined, for a tissue-residue approach to toxicity assessment. The EC₁₀ expressed as tissue concentration was lower for Nd than for Ce and Eu, thus the most toxic of the three REEs. As for many cationic inorganic elements, toxicity varies with the chemistry of the exposure medium due to its effects on bioaccessibility. Simple methods to harmonize toxicity thresholds from different media enables greater integration into regulatory standards. When EC₂₅ from this and other studies were normalized to CaCl₂-extractable REE in their respective media, the range in Ce EC₂₅ was reduced from 20-fold to 2.5-fold, and the range for Eu EC₂₅ was reduced from 25-fold to 3-fold. This novel and low-input approach to meta-analysis of toxicity thresholds demonstrates the value of considering soil physico-chemical properties as modifiers of soil REE toxicity.

In vivo phytotoxic effect of yttrium-oxide nanoparticles on the growth, uptake and translocation of tomato seedlings (Lycopersicon esculentum)

The potential toxicity and ecological risks of rare-earth nanoparticles in the environment have become a concern due to their widespread application and inevitable releases. The integration of hydroponics experiments, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were utilized to investigate the physiological toxicity, uptake and translocation of yttrium oxide nanoparticles (Y₂O₃ NPs) under different hydroponic treatments (1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 mg·L^-1 of Y₂O₃ NPs, 19.2 mg·L^-1 Y(NO₃)₃ and control) in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) seedlings. The results indicated that Y₂O₃ NPs had a phytotoxic effect on tomato seedlings' germination, morphology, physiology, and oxidative stress. The Y₂O₃ NPs and soluble Y^III reduced the root elongation, bud elongation, root activity, chlorophyll, soluble protein content and superoxide dismutase and accelerated the proline and malondialdehyde in the plant with increasing concentrations. The phytotoxic effects of Y₂O₃ NPs on tomato seedlings had a higher phytotoxic effect than soluble Y^III under the all treatments. The inhibition rates of different levels of Y₂O₃ NPs in shoot and root biomass ranged from 0.2% to 6.3% and 1.0-11.3%, respectively. The bioaccumulation and translocation factors were less than 1, which suggested that Y₂O₃ NPs significantly suppressed shoot and root biomass of tomato seedlings and easily bioaccumulated in the root. The observations were consistent with the process of concentration-dependent uptake and translocation factor and confirmed by TEM. Y₂O₃ NPs penetrate the epidermis, enter the cell wall, and exist in the intercellular space and cytoplasm of mesophyll cells of tomato seedlings by endocytic pathway. Moreover, PLS-SEM revealed that the concentration of NPs significantly negatively affects the morphology and physiology, leading to the change in biomass of plants. This study demonstrated the possible pathway of Y₂O₃ NPs in uptake, phytotoxicity and translocation of Y₂O₃ NPs in tomato seedlings.

Resource recovery: Adsorption and biomineralization of cerium by Bacillus licheniformis

Cerium is a critical element to modern technologies. Nowadays, its increased applications have led to elevated levels in the environment. Cerium recovery by microorganisms has gained a great deal of attention. Here, our research showed that Bacillus licheniformis could be used to recover Ce³⁺ from aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity of cerium on this bacterial strain achieved 38.93 mg/g (dry weight) biomass. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order rate model, and adsorption isotherm was fitted well with the Freundlich model. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations coupled with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis revealed a spatial association of Ce with C, N, O, S, and P. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis further suggested that the phosphate and carboxyl groups on the cell surface might be responsible for the adsorption of cerium. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) suggested that cerium initially occurred on the bacterial cell surface as Ce(OH)₃, which was mainly converted to monazite (CePO₄) and a small amount of CeO₂ overtime. Hydrothermal treatment was used to accelerate the mineralization process of cerium by B. licheniformis. The hydrothermal treatment is conducted for comparative analysis of mineralization process in extreme geological condition.

Hormetic effects of zinc on growth and antioxidant defense system of wheat plants

Although hormesis induced by heavy metals is a well-known phenomenon, the involved biological mechanisms are not fully understood. Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for wheat, an important crop contributing to food security as a main staple food; however, excessive Zn is detrimental to the growth of wheat. The aim of this study was to evaluate morphological and physiological responses of two wheat varieties exposed to a broad range of Zn concentrations (0-1000 μM) for 14 days. Hormesis was induced by Zn in both wheat varieties. Treatment with 10-100 μM Zn promoted biomass accumulation by enhancing the photosynthetic ability, the chlorophyll content and the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Increased root/shoot ratio suggested that shoot growth was severely inhibited when Zn concentration exceeded 300 μM by reducing photosynthetic ability and the content of photosynthetic pigments. Excessive Zn accumulation (Zn treatment of 300-1000 μM) in leaf and root induced membrane injuries through lipid peroxidation as malondialdehyde (MDA) content increased with increasing Zn concentration. The results show that MDA content was higher than other treatments by 16.1-151.1% and 15.0-88.3% (XN979) and 36.8-235.7% and 20.6-83.8% (BN207) in the leaves and roots under 1000 μM Zn treatment. To defend against Zn toxicity, ascorbate (AsA), glutathione (GSH), non-protein thiols (NPT) and phytochelatin (PC) content of both wheat varieties (except leaf GSH content of BN207) was increased, while, the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and the content of soluble protein decreased by 300-1000 μM Zn. The results showed that AsA-GSH cycle and NPT and PC content of wheat seedlings play important roles in defending against Zn toxicity. This study contributes new insights into the physiological mechanisms underlying the hormetic response of wheat to Zn, which could be beneficial for optimizing plant health in changing environments and improving risk assessments.

Growth and antioxidant response in Spirodela polyrrhiza under linear alkylbenzene sulfonate, naphthalene and their joint stress

The synthetic organic surfactants linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon naphthalene (NAP), two common organic pollutants, are frequently detected in freshwater environments. However, the combined ecotoxicological risks associated with these pollutants have not been fully elucidated. The present study investigated the effects of individual and combined treatments of LAS and NAP on the growth and physiological responses of Spirodela polyrrhiza. The results showed that LAS was the main compound toxic to S. polyrrhiza in a dose-dependent manner. The peroxidase (POD) enzyme and catalase (CAT) enzyme are the main antioxidant enzymes protecting S. polyrrhiza from LAS stress. When exposed to NAP stress alone, only slightly reversible damage was observed as the exposure time was extended (14 days). The antioxidant enzyme systems (including superoxide dismutase (SOD), CAT and POD) showed positive responses. Synergistic effects were induced with LAS-NAP mixtures (≥ 5 + 5 mg L^-1), and LAS played a major toxic role. The POD enzyme was a sensitive protective enzyme in duckweed during the joint exposure to LAS + NAP. The results indicate that LAS or NAP may cause serious damage to S. polyrrhiza and aggravate ecotoxicity in aquatic ecosystems.

Effect of rare earth element lanthanum on lipid deposition and Wnt10b signaling in the liver of male zebrafish

This paper investigates the effect of lanthanum (La) on lipid deposition and Wnt10b signaling in the liver of male zebrafish with exposure of 0, 10, 20, and 30 μmol/L La. It suggests that La can be accumulated in liver, and its treatments decrease the activities and gene expression of enzymes related to fatty acid synthesis. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) as well as the size of lipid droplets are decreased by La treatments. Moreover, La treatments affect the composition of fatty acids and the content of nutrient elements. Meanwhile, they also induce the gene expression of wnt10b, β-catenin, pparα, and pparγ, but inhibit gsk-3β gene expression in liver. Further study on the result of wnt10b gene interference shows that Wnt10b/β-catenin signaling plays a crucial role in the regulatory process of hepatic lipid deposition. Taken together, our observations suggest that La accumulation affects lipid deposition in the liver of male zebrafish, and Wnt10b signaling pathway may be involved in this process.

Role of rare-earth elements in enhancing bioelectrocatalysis for biosensing with NAD+-dependent glutamate dehydrogenase

Dehydrogenases (DHs) are widely explored bioelectrocatalysts in the development of enzymatic bioelectronics like biosensors and biofuel cells. However, the relatively low intrinsic reaction rates of DHs which mostly depend on diffusional coenzymes (e.g., NAD+) have limited their bioelectrocatalytic performance in applications such as biosensors with a high sensitivity. In this study, we find that rare-earth elements (REEs) can enhance the activity of NAD+-dependent glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) toward highly sensitive electrochemical biosensing of glutamate in vivo. Electrochemical studies show that the sensitivity of the GDH-based glutamate biosensor is remarkably enhanced in the presence of REE cations (i.e., Yb3+, La3+ or Eu3+) in solution, of which Yb3+ yields the highest sensitivity increase (ca. 95%). With the potential effect of REE cations on NAD+ electrochemistry being ruled out, homogeneous kinetic assays by steady-state and stopped-flow spectroscopy reveal a two-fold enhancement in the intrinsic reaction rate of GDH by introducing Yb3+, mainly through accelerating the rate-determining NADH releasing step during the catalytic cycle. In-depth structural investigations using small angle X-ray scattering and infrared spectroscopy indicate that Yb3+ induces the backbone compaction of GDH and subtle β-sheet transitions in the active site, which may reduce the energetic barrier to NADH dissociation from the binding pocket as further suggested by molecular dynamics simulation. This study not only unmasks the mechanism of REE-promoted GDH kinetics but also paves a new way to highly sensitive biosensing of glutamate in vivo.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Effects of Rare Earth Elements on Growth and Chlorophyll of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) Seedling

Rare earth elements (REEs) of low concentration are usually beneficial to plant growth, while they are toxic at high concentrations. The effects of treatment with lanthanum (La) (10 and 20 μM), cerium (Ce) (10 and 20 μM), and terbium (Tb) (10 and 20 μM) on seedling growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), which is one of the most important perennial leguminous forages in the world, were studied. The results showed that all three REE treatments quickened the germination of seeds. The length of shoot under La (20 μM) treatment was significantly shortened (P < 0.05). In addition, treatment with La, Ce, and Tb had a "hormesis effect" on root length. There was a significant decrease in chlorophyll content on treatment with the three REEs, and the degree of decline was in the order of La < Ce < Tb, under the same concentration. In vitro experiments and quantum chemical calculations were further performed to explain why the treatments with REEs reduced the chlorophyll content. In vitro experiments showed that La, Ce, and Tb treatments reduced the absorbance of chlorophyll, and the decrease followed in the order of La > Ce > Tb. Quantum chemical calculations predicted that the decrease in absorption intensity was caused by the reactions between La, Ce, Tb, and chlorophyll, which formed lanthanides-chlorophyll; and there were five types of stable lanthanides-chlorophyll. In conclusion, the decrease in chlorophyll content on treatment with REEs was caused by the change in chlorophyll structure.

Low-dose lanthanum activates endocytosis, aggravating accumulation of lanthanum or/and lead and disrupting homeostasis of essential elements in the leaf cells of four edible plants

Rare earth elements (REEs) are emerging as a serious threat to ecological safety due to their increasing accumulation in environments. The accumulation of REEs in environments has significantly increased its accumulation in the leaves of edible plants. However, the accumulation pathway of REEs in the leaves of edible plants are still unknown. In this study, lanthanum [La(III), a widely used and accumulated REE] and four edible plants (soybean, lettuce, pakchoi, and celery) with short growth cycles were selected as research objects. By using interdisciplinary research techniques, we found that low-dose La(III) activated endocytosis (mainly the clathrin-mediated endocytosis) in the leaf cells of four edible plants, which provided an accumulation pathway for low-dose La in the leaf cells of these edible plants. The accumulation of La in the leaf cells was positively correlated with the intensity of endocytosis, while the intensity of endocytosis was negatively correlated with the density of leaf trichomes. In addition to the accumulation of La, low-dose La(III) also brought other risks. For example, the harmful element (Pb) can also be accumulated in the leaf cells via La(III)-activated endocytosis; the homeostasis of the essential elements (K, Ca, Fe, Mg) was disrupted, although the chlorophyll synthesis and the growth of these leaf cells were accelerated; and the expression of stress response genes (GmNAC20, GmNAC11) in soybean leaves was increased. These results provided an insight to further analyze the toxicity and mechanism of REEs in plants, and sounded the alarm for the application of REEs in agriculture.

Dynamic interaction processes of rare earth metal mixtures in terrestrial organisms interpreted by toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic model

Despite the progress in explanation of mixture toxicity of rare earth elements (REEs), a large knowledge gap still exists in interpreting their mixed effects from a dynamic perspective. Here, we investigated the effects of La-Ce mixtures in Enchytraeus crypticus at different exposure times. The single and mixture toxicity of La and Ce increased with time, as reflected by the reduced LC50/MT50 values. With concentration addition as the reference model, the interactions between La and Ce were quantified by MIXTOX modelling tool, showing a time-dependent pattern with antagonistic effect after 1 and 2 d but additive effects afterwards. The dynamic accumulation and toxicity of La/Ce in organisms exposed to REE mixtures was fitted using a process-based toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic (TK-TD) model to unravel how the elements interacted. Generally, the estimated uptake, elimination, and damage rate constants of La/Ce declined with increasing level of each other, suggesting inhibited uptake and subsequently reduced toxicity of La/Ce due to competition effect. The interplay of La and Ce in TK and TD processes seemed responsible for the observed antagonism. Our study showed that mixture toxicity and interaction of REEs are time-dependent processes and application of TK-TD model may provide more insight into this dynamic effect.

The accumulation and effect of rare earth element neodymium on the root of rice seedlings

Neodymium (Nd) potentially threatens ecological equilibrium for its wide usage in industries. In this study, the accumulation and effect of Nd on roots were investigated in the rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.) exposed to different concentrations of Nd (0, 1, 10, 100, and 1000 μM). The toxic effect of Nd on rice growth was observed at the higher concentration, but the positive effects were found at the lower concentration. The accumulation of Nd was present in six different chemical forms, and the insoluble phosphate and oxalate Nd were the major forms of Nd in the roots. In addition, Nd was accumulated in the soluble fractions, organelles, and cell walls of rice seedlings, and the root cell wall was a major Nd sink site. The result of Fourier transform infrared spectrometer spectral analysis indicated that the functional groups of -OH and C-OH were the major binding sites of Nd in the cell wall of roots. Moreover, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the activity of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD) were significantly increased with the increase of Nd concentration. The enhanced antioxidant capacity also played an important role in Nd detoxification of rice seedlings. In all, the results indicated that forming of inactive oxalate or phosphate and efficient sequestration into the root cell wall was a key process in Nd accumulation and detoxification of rice seedlings.

Effect of the Rare Earth Element Lanthanum (La) on the Growth and Development of Citrus Rootstock Seedlings

Rare earth elements (REEs) can affect the growth and development of plants. However, few studies have been carried out on the effects of REEs on citrus seedlings. In this study, the growth parameters, toxicity symptoms, chlorophyll content, and La content of three citrus rootstocks are analyzed under different concentrations of La, a representative REE. The results show that the growth of citrus rootstock seedlings was stimulated at La ≤ 0.5 mmol·L⁻¹ and inhibited at concentrations above 1 mmol·L⁻¹. The chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata L. Raf.) and Ziyang Xiangcheng (C. junos Sieb. ex Tanaka) leaves of plants grown at low concentrations of La (≤1.5 mmol·L⁻¹) were similar to those of the control but were significantly reduced at 4 mmol·L⁻¹ La. Toxic symptoms gradually appeared with increasing La concentrations, with yellowed leaves and burst veins appearing at 4 mmol·L⁻¹ La. The symptoms of toxicity were most severe in trifoliate orange, followed by Shatian Pomelo (Citrus grandis var. shatinyu Hort) and then Ziyang Xiangcheng. Moreover, in leaves, the Ca content was significantly negatively correlated with La content (p < 0.01). These results indicate that La has a hormesis effect on the growth of citrus rootstocks. Of the studied citrus seedlings, Ziyang Xiangcheng is the most resistant to La.

Hormesis in plants: Physiological and biochemical responses

Hormesis is a favorable response to low level exposures to substance or to adverse conditions. This phenomenon has become a target to achieve greater crop productivity. This review aimed to address the physiological mechanisms for the induction of hormesis in plants. Some herbicides present a hormetic dose response. Among them, those with active ingredients glyphosate, 2,4-D and paraquat. The application of glyphosate as a hormesis promoter is therefore showing promess . Glyphosate has prominent role in shikimic acid pathway, decreasing lignin synthesis resulting in improved growth and productivity of several crops. Further studies are still needed to estimate optimal doses for other herbicides of crops or agricultural interest. Biostimulants are also important, since they promote effects on secondary metabolic pathways and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). When ROS are produced, hydrogen peroxide act as a signaling molecule that promote cell walls malleability allowing inward water transport causing cell expansion. . Plants'ability to overcome several abiotic stress conditions is desirable to avoid losses in crop productivity and economic losses. This review compiles information on how hormesis in plants can be used to achieve new production levels.

Warming enhances lanthanum accumulation and toxicity promoting cellular damage in glass eels (Anguilla anguilla)

Cumulative and continuing human emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere are causing ocean warming. Rising temperature is a major threat to aquatic organisms and may affect physiological responses, such as acid-base balance, often compromising species fitness and survival. It is also expected that warming may influence the availability and toxicological effects of pollutants, including Rare Earth Elements. These are contaminants of environmental emerging concern with great economic interest. This group comprises yttrium, scandium and lanthanides, being Lanthanum (La) one of the most common. The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is critically endangered and constitutes a delicacy in South East Asia and Europe, being subject to an increasing demand on a global scale. Considering the vulnerability of early life stages to contaminants, we exposed glass eels to 1.5 μg L^-1 of La for five days, plus five days of depuration, under a present-day temperature and warming scenarios (△T = +4 °C). The aim of this study was to assess the bioaccumulation, elimination and specific biochemical enzymatic endpoints in glass eels (Anguilla anguilla) tissues, under warming and La. Overall, our results showed that the accumulation and toxicity of La were enhanced with increasing temperature. The accumulation was higher in the viscera, followed by the head, and ultimately the body. Elimination was less effective under warming. Exposure to La did not impact acetylcholinesterase activity. Moreover, lipid peroxidation peaked after five days under the combined exposure of La and warming. The expression of heat shock proteins was majorly suppressed in glass eels exposed to La, at both tested temperatures. This result suggests that, when exposed to La, glass eels were unable to efficiently prevent cellular damage, with a particularly dramatic setup in a near-future scenario. Further studies are needed towards a better understanding of the effects of lanthanum in a changing world.

Lanthanum delays senescence and improves postharvest quality in cut tulip (Tulipa gesneriana L.) flowers

We tested two sources of lanthanum (La), LaCl₃ and La(NO₃)₃ × 6H₂O at a concentration of 40 µM each, in the treatment solution of cut flowers of 15 tulip (Tulipa gesneriana L.) cultivars. Ascorbic acid (AsA; 0.2 g/L) was used as a reference solution, while distilled water was evaluated as an absolute control. With both La sources, bud length and diameter, and stem length were increased; as a result, stem curvature was also significantly increased with La treatments. The cultivars Laura Fygi and Rosario registered the highest relative stem elongation. Lalibela and Acropolis displayed the greatest stem curvature on the last day in vase. At 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 days after cutting, the highest solution uptake was recorded in flower stems treated with LaCl₃, surpassing the control by 5, 11, 15, 18 and 24%, respectively. The relative stem elongations observed were 21.3, 27.4, 35.2 and 35.5% in the control, AsA, LaCl₃ and La(NO₃)₃, respectively. The mean solution uptake per gram of stem fresh biomass weight was 1.44, 1.44, 1.71 and 1.54 mL in the control, AsA, LaCl₃ and La(NO₃)₃, respectively. LaCl₃ significantly increased the bud length and solution uptake of flower stems, while La(NO₃)₃ × 6H₂O increased stem fresh weight.

Extremely-low frequency magnetic field exposure for simulating geomagnetic pulsations in Alexandrium pacificum and Gymnodinium catenatum cultures

Growth and chain formation in cultures of the chain-forming dinoflagellates Alexandrium pacificum and Gymnodinium catenatum were previously found to be susceptible to space weather variables. A clock drive was used to deliver a frequency of 0.5 Hz and central amplitude of 7 µT in order to perform in vitro simulation of geomagnetic pulsations (composed of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields, ELFMF) which occur during high geomagnetic activity (GMA) periods. Short-term exposure (hours) to this ELFMF increased relative cell growth around 10 nT of naturally occurring GMA. Relative growth outside these intervals gradually approached 0% or was negative for G. catenatum. Differential survival to a subsequent shock was inversely related to growth, and minimal survival coincided with the same 10 nT interval. Relative growth and survival displayed opposite hormetic curves towards GMA: inverted U-shaped for growth, and J-shaped for survival. After exposure to this ELFMF, positive phototaxis response was not lost, but the percentage of cells swimming was slightly reduced. Long-term exposure (days) increased relative growth in A. pacificum but reduced in G. catenatum when low GMA was taking place. These alterations in growth were both associated with a reduction in the cellular pool of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs). MAAs that are more susceptible to oxidation were more reduced than those resistant, highlighting that an ELFMF can act by increasing cellular oxidative stress status. The higher susceptibility of G. catenatum found is in compliance with the previous association of its natural populations at the western Iberia coast with periods of solar activity minima and GMA minima.

Analysis of the absorption and accumulation characteristics of rare earth elements in Chinese tea

BACKGROUND

Rare earth elements (REEs) played an important role in enhancing the yield and quality of tea, and have been widely used in tea cultivation. In the present study, 3011 tea samples of four tea types, namely black tea, green tea, oolong tea and dark tea, were collected from the mainly tea producing areas in different provinces of China to analyze the contents of 16 REEs by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

RESULTS

The results obtained showed that the higher average content of REEs was 2.960 mg kg^-1 in black tea from Henan province, 2.500 mg·kg^-1 in green tea from Shanxi province, 3.870 mg·kg^-1 in oolong tea from Guizhou province and 2.955 mg·kg^-1 in dark tea from Hunan province. The sum percentage of five elements (Sc, Y, La, Ce, and Nd) to total REEs was 84.39% in black tea, 85.07% in green tea, 83.67% in oolong tea and 84.42% in dark tea. In addition, the content of Ce in tea was greatest, regardless of the province of China. The content trend of the five REEs was Ce > La > Sc > Nd > Y in black and green tea, respectively. However, the content trend was Ce > Y > Sc > Nd > La in oolong tea and Ce > Y > La > Nd > Sc in dark tea.

CONCLUSION

The tea leaves mainly accumulated light REEs rather than heavy REEs. These results provided an important theoretical basis for investigation of the accumulation characteristics of REEs in Chinese tea. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Lanthanum and abscisic acid coregulate chlorophyll production of seedling in switchgrass

The rare earth element lanthanum (La) has been proven to be beneficial for plant growth with a low concentration, and abscisic acid (ABA) which is a plant hormone also can regulate plant growth. In the present study, we investigated the germination and seedling growth of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) under La (10 μM), ABA (10 μM) and La + ABA treatments. The results showed that La, ABA and La + ABA treatments could not significantly affect the germination and shoot length as compared to the control (P>0.05). However, La treatment increased the root activity and chlorophyll content, and ABA treatment enhanced root length and root activity (P<0.05). La + ABA treatments demonstrated that La could not significantly alleviate the promotion of ABA in root length, while ABA reversed the increase of chlorophyll content caused by La. The coregulation of La and ABA on chlorophyll content was further explored by in vitro experiments and quantum chemical calculations. In vitro experiments revealed that La, ABA, and La + ABA treatments reduced the absorbance of chlorophyll, and quantum chemical calculations indicated that the reduction of absorbance was caused by the reactions between La, ABA and chlorophyll. In vivo and in vitro experiments, together with quantum chemical calculations, demonstrated that both ABA and La could stimulate the production of chlorophyll, while they also could react with chlorophyll to produce La-monochlorophyll, La-bischlorophyll, and ABA adsorbed chlorophyll, which had lower absorbance. La + ABA treatment significantly decreased the chlorophyll content in vivo. This phenomenon was due to the fact that La and ABA formed LaABA compound, which markedly reduced the concentrations of ABA and La, and the effect of promoting chlorophyll production was overcome by the effect of reducing chlorophyll absorbance.

Effects of Ceria Nanoparticles and CeCl3 on Plant Growth, Biological and Physiological Parameters, and Nutritional Value of Soil Grown Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)

The release of metal ions may play an important role in toxicity of metal-based nanoparticles. In this report, a life cycle study is carried out in a greenhouse, to compare the effects of ceria nanoparticles (NPs) and Ce³⁺ ions at 0, 50, 100, and 200 mg Ce kg^-1 on plant growth, biological and physiological parameters, and nutritional value of soil-grown common bean plants. Ceria NPs have a tendency to negatively affect photosynthesis, but the effect is not statistically significant. Ce³⁺ ionic treatments at 50, 100, and 200 mg Ce kg^-1 result in increases of 1.25-, 0.66-, and 1.20-fold in stomatal conductance, respectively, relative to control plants. Both ceria NPs and Ce³⁺ ions disturb the homeostasis of antioxidant defense system in the plants, but only 200 mg Ce kg^-1 ceria NPs significantly induce lipid peroxidation in the roots. Ceria NP treatments tend to reduced fresh weight and to increase mineral contents of the green pods, but have no effect on the organic nutrient contents. On the contrary, Ce³⁺ ion treatments modify the organic compositions and thus alter the nutritional quality and flavor of the green pods. These results suggest that the two Ce forms may have different mechanisms on common bean plants.

Lanthanum Prolongs Vase Life of Cut Tulip Flowers by Increasing Water Consumption and Concentrations of Sugars, Proteins and Chlorophylls

We evaluated the effect of separately adding two sources of lanthanum (La), LaCl₃ and La(NO₃)₃ × 6H₂O at a concentration of 40 µM each, to the preservative solution of 15 cut tulip flower varieties. Ascorbic acid (AsA; 0.2 g/L) was used as a reference solution, while distilled water was used as control. The variety Laura Fygi recorded the longest vase life with 13 days. The highest water consumption per gram of stem fresh biomass weight (FBW) (2.5 mL) was observed in the variety Violet Beauty, whereas the lowest (1.098 mL) was recorded in Pink Impression. At the end of the vase life period, higher concentrations of total soluble sugars in petals and total soluble proteins in leaves were recorded in La-treated stems, compared to the AsA treatment and the control. Additionally, La(NO₃)₃ × 6H₂O supply increased the fresh weight of stems in vase and prolonged vase life. Moreover, this treatment resulted in the highest foliar concentration of chlorophylls at the end of vase life. Therefore, La increases tulip flower vase life as a consequence of improving the concentrations of some vital biomolecules.

Presence and possible origin of positive Eu anomaly in shoot samples of Juncus effusus L

BACKGROUND

The rare earth elements (REE) are non-essential elements for plants. They stimulate plant growth at low doses, but at high levels are phytotoxic. There are differences in concentrations of REE in various organs of the same plant species, but the normalized REE patterns can be very similar in samples of the same species collected in different locations. Here we compare normalized REE curves in above-ground samples of Juncus effusus L. (common rush, soft rush) collected from sites with different land-use types.

METHODS

The concentrations of rare earth elements were measured in 55 shoot samples of J. effusus L. The samples were collected from 15 sampling sites located in the Holy Cross Mts., south-central Poland and analyzed with the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results were normalized to the North American Shale Composite and anomalies of different elements were calculated.

RESULTS

Total REE concentrations varied from 0.028 mg/kg to 2.7 mg/kg. The samples were enriched in the light REE (from La to Eu) with the highest concentrations of La and Ce. The North American Shale Composite (NASC)-normalized REE curves were roughly similar in all samples except for two samples collected in the acid mine drainageaffected areas.

CONCLUSION

All samples showed positive europium anomalies in NASC-normalized REE concentration patterns. The most probable explanation of this is that the uptake and translocation of Eu in J. effusus (and possibly in other wetland plants) is caused by a short-term decrease of the redox potential in a rhizosphere favoring reduction of Eu³⁺ to Eu²⁺ and thus enhancing Eu mobility in the soil-plant environment.

Effects of heavy rare earth element (yttrium) on partial-nitritation process, bacterial activity and structure of responsible microbial communities

Yttrium (Y(III)) is mined commercially for industrial purposes due to its excellent physical properties. However, the effects of Y(III) in mining-wastewater on the performance of partial-nitritation process and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) have not been explored. To elucidate Y(III) effects on biological mechanisms, kinetics was conducted to establish a correlation between Y(III) dosage and specific-oxygen-uptake-rate (SOUR). The mechanism(s) demonstrated by bacterial population to resist against toxic effects from Y(III) dose was also investigated using scanning electron microscopy-(SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy-(EDS), confocal laser scanning microscopy-(CLSM)，Fourier transform infrared-(FTIR) spectroscopy, and 2-dimensional correlation infrared-(2DCOS-IR) approach. The study revealed a strong correlation between ammonium oxidation rate (AOR) and Y(III) dosage. AOR promotion was more pronounced when Y(III) concentration was ≤20 mg/L (maximum AOR of 12.39 mgN/L/h, at 5 mg/L), whereas inhibition when Y(III) in influent was >20 mg/L (minimum AOR of 7.34 mgN/L/h, at 500 mg/L). Aiba model demonstrated high-performance (R² = 0.962) when Y(III) concentration ranged 0-20 mg/L, whereas linear model fitted well (R² of 0.984) to experimental data when Y(III) dose ranged 20-500 mg/L. The maximum change in SOUR (Vmax), half-rate constant (Km), and inhibition constant (Ki) reached 1.04 d^-1, 20.12 mg/L, and 4.87 mg/L, respectively, an indication that dosage of Y(III) could affect the partial-nitritation process. SEM-EDS showed that the content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) increased along with increasing Y(III) dosage. When 20 mg/L of Y(III) was dosed, the fraction of Y(III) within the surface elemental composition of the sludge increased gradually whereas that of calcium decreased. To further comprehend the EPS production, CLSM results further revealed β-polysaccharide as the dominant component in the EPS. FTIR/2DCOD-IR showed that the chelation of polyguluronic sections within β-polysaccharide, together with hydrazine might be the main pathways of cell resistance, but β- glucan, may have caused the hormesis.

Stress response and population dynamics: Is Allee effect hormesis?

Hormesis is a fundamental notion in ecotoxicology while competition between organisms is an essential notion in population ecology and species adaptation and evolution. Both sub-disciplines of ecology deal with the response of organisms to abiotic and biotic stresses. In ecotoxicology, the Linear-non-Threshold (LNT), Threshold and Hormetic models are used to describe the dominant responses of a plethora of endpoints to abiotic stress. In population ecology, the logistic, theta-logistic and the Allee effect models are used to describe the growth of populations under different responses to (biotic) stress induced by population density. The per capita rate of population increase (r) measures species fitness. When it is used as endpoint, the responses to population density seem to perfectly correspond to LNT, Threshold and Hormetic responses to abiotic stress, respectively. Our analysis suggests the Allee effect is a hormetic-like response of r to population density, an ultimate biotic stress. This biphasic dose-response model appears across different systems and situations (from molecules to tumor growth to population dynamics), is highly supported by ecological and evolutionary theory, and has important implications in most sub-disciplines of biology as well as in environmental and earth sciences. Joined multi-disciplinary efforts would facilitate the development and application of advanced research approaches for better understanding potential planetary-scale implications.

The cation competition and electrostatic theory are equally valid in quantifying the toxicity of trivalent rare earth ions (Y3+ and Ce3+) to Triticum aestivum

There is a lack of appropriate models to delineate the toxicity of rare earth elements (REEs) while taking into account the factors that affect bioavailability. Here, standardized wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) root elongation tests were conducted to examine the impact of exposure conditions (i.e., varying Ca, Mg, Na, K and pH levels) on Y and Ce toxicity. Cation competition and electrostatic theory were examined for their applicability in explaining the observed variations in toxicity. Only Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ significantly alleviated the toxicity of Y³⁺ and Ce³⁺, while Na⁺, K⁺ and H⁺ showed no significant effects. Based on the cation competition, the derived binding constants for the hypothetical biotic ligands of wheat logK_CaBL, logK_MgBL, logK_YBL, and logK_CeBL were 3.87, 3.59, 6.70, and 6.48, respectively. The biotic ligand model (BLM) succeeded in predicting toxicities of Y and Ce, with more than 93% of the variance in toxicity explained. Given the BLM requires large data sets for deriving model parameters, attempts were further made to explore a simpler electrostatic based model to quantify REEs toxicity. The results demonstrated that the predictive capacity of the electrostatic approach, which considers ion activities at the plasma membrane surface, was comparable to that of BLM with at least 87% of the variations in toxicity explained. This suggested that the electrostatic theory can serve as a surrogate to BLM in modeling Y and Ce toxicities. Therefore, we recommend the BLM and electrostatic-based model as effective approaches to incorporate bioavailability in quantifying REEs toxicity in the presence of various levels of other major cations.

Polyethylene glycol 400 significantly enhances the stimulation of 2-phenoxyethanol on Vibrio qinghaiensis sp.-Q67 bioluminescence

Previous studies demonstrated long-term stimulation of some commercial personal care products (PCPs) on freshwater luminescent bacteria Vibrio qinghaiensis sp.-Q67 (Q67). However, whether a certain component can affect mixture's hormetic effect is still unknown. In this paper, two of ingredients in PCPs, 2-phenoxyethanol (PhE) and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400), were selected as object compounds to explore the relationship between concentration-response (CR) of mixtures and that of a single component. It was found that PEG400 has monotonic CR (MCR) on Q67 both at the short-term (0.25 h) and long-term (12 h) exposures while PhE has MCR at 0.25 h and hormetic CR (HCR) at 12 h. Here, the concentration-response curves (CRCs) of PEG400 at 0.25 and 12 h are overlapped each other and the CRCs of PEG400 are on the right of PhE. If the pEC₅₀ is taken as a toxic index, the toxicities of PEG400 at two times are basically the same, and those of PhE are the same, too, but PhE is twice as toxic as PEG400. For the mixtures of PEG400 and PhE, all rays except R1 have MCRs at 0.25 h while all rays have HCRs at 12 h where the higher the mixture ratio of PhE is, the more negative the maximum stimulation effect is. More importantly, the E_min values of all rays are more negative (1.79-3.17-fold) than that of PhE worked alone, which implies that the introduction of PEG400 significantly enhances stimulative effect of PhE. At 0.25 h, all binary mixture rays but R1 produce a low-concentration additive action and high-concentration synergism. At 12 h, all rays display additive action, antagonism, additive action, and synergism in turn when the concentration changes from low to high. The overall findings suggested toxicological interactions should be considered in the risk assessment of PCPs and their potential impacts on ecological balances.

Human exposures to rare earth elements: Present knowledge and research prospects

The extensive use of rare earth elements (REEs) in a number of technologies is expected to impact on human health, including occupational and environmental REE exposures. A body of experimental evidence on REE-associated toxicity has been accumulated in recent decades, thus providing extensive background information on the adverse effects of REE exposures. Unlike experimental studies, the consequences of REE exposures to human health have been subjected to relatively fewer investigations. Geographical studies have been conducted on residents in REE mining districts, reporting on REE bioaccumulation, and associations between REE residential exposures and adverse health effects. A recent line of studies has associated tobacco smoking and indoor smoke with increased levels of some REEs in exposed residents. A body of literature has been focused on occupational REE exposures, with the observation of respiratory tract damage. The occupations related to REE mining and processing have shown REE bioaccumulation in scalp hair, excess REE urine levels, and defective gene expression. As for other REE occupational exposures, mention should be made of: a) jobs exposing to REE aerosol, such as movie operator; b) e-waste processing and, c) diesel engine repair and maintenance, with exposures to exhaust microparticulate (containing nanoCeO₂ as a catalytic additive). Diesel exhaust microparticulate has been studied in animal models, leading to evidence of several pathological effects in animals exposed by respiratory or systemic routes. A working hypothesis for REE occupational exposures is raised on REE-based supermagnet production and manufacture, by reviewing experimental studies that suggest several pathological effects of static magnetic fields, and warrant further investigations.

Predicting the effect of ozone on vegetation via linear non-threshold (LNT), threshold and hormetic dose-response models

The nature of the dose-response relationship in the low dose zone and how this concept may be used by regulatory agencies for science-based policy guidance and risk assessment practices are addressed here by using the effects of surface ozone (O₃) on plants as a key example for dynamic ecosystems sustainability. This paper evaluates the current use of the linear non-threshold (LNT) dose-response model for O₃. The LNT model has been typically applied in limited field studies which measured damage from high exposures, and used to estimate responses to lower concentrations. This risk assessment strategy ignores the possibility of biological acclimation to low doses of stressor agents. The upregulation of adaptive responses by low O₃ concentrations typically yields pleiotropic responses, with some induced endpoints displaying hormetic-like biphasic dose-response relationships. Such observations recognize the need for risk assessment flexibility depending upon the endpoints measured, background responses, as well as possible dose-time compensatory responses. Regulatory modeling strategies would be significantly improved by the adoption of the hormetic dose response as a formal/routine risk assessment option based on its substantial support within the literature, capacity to describe the entire dose-response continuum, documented explanatory dose-dependent mechanisms, and flexibility to default to a threshold feature when background responses preclude application of biphasic dose responses.

Hormetic dose responses induced by lanthanum in plants

Rare earth elements (REEs) have recently received particular attention due to their accumulation in the environment. Such heightened recognition prompted our evaluation of the possible occurrence of La-induced plant hormesis in the peer-reviewed literature. This study revealed 703 La-induced hormetic concentration/dose responses in plants, which were quantitatively and qualitatively assessed. The maximum (MAX) biological response to low La concentrations/doses is commonly below 150% of control response, with a geometric mean of 142% at 56 μM (geometric mean). The geometric mean concentration of the no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL) was 249 μM. The MAX:NOAEL distance was commonly below 5-fold, with a geometric mean of 4.5-fold. Hormetic concentration/dose responses varied as per the growth substrate pH, number of concentrations/doses below the NOAEL, and time window. These results provide a unique insight into the effects of low doses of La on plant growth, as well as offer means for improving experimental designs to assess low dose effects.

Human and veterinary antibiotics induce hormesis in plants: Scientific and regulatory issues and an environmental perspective

Veterinary and human pharmaceuticals have been widely used in the developed world, thus increasing their accumulation in the environment and thereby posing ecological risks. Earlier studies report that active pharmaceutical ingredients induce hormesis in plants, i.e. at low doses may enhance plant health whereas at high doses may suppress plant vigor. There is hitherto no study critically reviewing the effects of antibiotics on plants within a hormetic context despite effects of low doses on plants can have implications to animals, including humans, and to ecological processes. This study critically reviews for first time antibiotic-induced hormesis in plants, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Hormesis was induced by several antibiotics in a variety of species and endpoints. The maximum stimulatory response (MAX) was commonly <1.5-fold the control response and the distance from MAX to no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) was commonly up to 10-fold. Further quantitative and qualitative evaluations are provided and discussed in relation to scientific and regulatory aspects. Low doses of antibiotics are equally important as high doses as they can negatively affect plants, depending on plant tissues and the time tissues are subject to exposure. Antibiotic-induced hormesis in plants provides a significant environmental perspective and should be incorporated into the hazard and risk assessment process.

Impact of light quality and space weather in Alexandrium catenella (Dinophyceae) cultures

The chain-forming dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella was grown with LED or fluorescent light. With LED light, the pool of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) with strong antioxidant properties, such as mycosporine-glycine and palythene, was reduced in comparison to fluorescent light. The conjugated MAAs M-320 and M-335/360 presented similar stability to light and oxidation than their respective more sensitive moiety: mycosporine-glycine and palythene, respectively. A. catenella was exposed to extracellular hydrogen peroxide under LED or fluorescent light. It triggered an increase in chain formation at a final concentration of 98 and 196 µM, typical of an inverted U-shaped hormetic response, and reduced cell survival above 294 µM. LED light, minimizing UV-stress photoprotection, was chosen to render cells more susceptible to space weather. Cultures were exposed to 490 µM H₂O₂ multiple times between November 2017 and February 2018, close to the minimum of solar cycle 24. Cell survival was dependent on temperature, geomagnetic activity, solar X-rays and neutron flux. Geomagnetic activity originated an inverted U-shaped survival curve and X-ray flux a J-shaped survival curve, this second type of hormetic response being more rarely found. The percentage of cells in chains increased moderately with temperature, and more significantly with solar X-ray flux. Chain formation reduced along culture growth, but these observations were dependent on the occurring X-ray flux.

Emission of volatile organic compounds from plants shows a biphasic pattern within an hormetic context

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are released to the atmosphere from vegetation. BVOCs aid in maintaining ecosystem sustainability via a series of functions, however, VOCs can alter tropospheric photochemistry and negatively affect biological organisms at high concentrations. Due to their critical role in ecosystem and environmental sustainability, BVOCs receive particular attention by global change biologists. To understand how plant VOC emissions affect stress responses within a dose-response context, dose responses should be evaluated. This commentary collectively documents hormetic-like responses of plant-emitted VOCs to external stimuli. Hormesis is a generalizable biphasic dose response phenomenon where the response to low doses acts in an opposite way at high doses. These collective findings suggest that ecological implications of low-level stress that may alter BVOC emissions should be considered in future studies. This commentary promotes new insights into the interface between biological systems and environmental change that influence several parts of the globe, and provide a base for advancing hazard assessment testing strategies and protocols to provide decision makers with adequate data for generating environmental standards.

Environmental hormesis and its fundamental biological basis: Rewriting the history of toxicology

It has long been debated whether a little stress may be "good" for you. Extensive evidence has now sufficiently accumulated demonstrating that low doses of a vast range of chemical and physical agents induce protective/beneficial effects while the opposite occurs at higher doses, a phenomenon known as hormesis. Low doses of environmental agents have recently induced autophagy, a critical adaptive response that protects essentially all cell types, as well as being transgenerational via epigenetic mechanisms. These collective findings highlight a generalized and substantial ongoing dose-response transformation with significant implications for disease biology and clinical applications, challenging the history and practice of toxicology and pharmacology along with an appeal to stake holders to reexamine the process of risk assessment, with the goal of optimizing public health rather than simply avoiding harm.
