Functional activity and functional gene diversity of a Cu-contaminated soil remediated by aided phytostabilization using compost, dolomitic limestone and a mixed tree stand

Effects of aerial liming on soil chemical and biological properties in metal contaminated and inaccessible lands in Ontario (Canada)

The manual addition of lime to soil, in addition to tree planting and fertilization have been the dominant strategy described in restoration protocols for ecosystems damaged by acid rain and metal contamination. Investigations on aerial-limed soils in inaccessible lands are limited. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of aerial liming on soil pH, organic matter, microbial biomass, and enzymatic activities, and aboveground plant population quality in metal-contaminated lands in northern Ontario, Canada. Soil samples were collected from three sites around the City of Greater Sudbury with each pair being composed of a reclaimed (areal-limed) site and an adjacent undisturbed (unlimed) area. Soil physico-chemistry, microbial biomass (assessed by Phospholipid fatty acid analysis) and enzymatic activities were analyzed. Soil pH was higher in limed sites compared to unlimed at recently restored sites (Baby Lake and Wahnapitae) but not at the oldest reclaimed site (HWY 80 N). Organic matter was higher in limed areas compared to the unlimed reference site only at most recently reclaimed site at Baby Lake. Aboveground plant population health was visibly improved in limed sites compared to unlimed areas. Metal concentrations of iron (Fe) and arsenic (As), total microbial biomasses, gram-negative bacterial, fungal, and eukaryotic biomasses were all significantly increased in the limed soils compared to the unlimed samples. The same trend was observed for the activities of three of the enzymes tested, β-N-acetylglucosaminidase (BG), aryl sulfatase (AS), and glycine aminopeptidase (GAP). Interestingly, strong positive correlations between the levels of soil organic matter, microbial biomasses, and NAGase and ALP activities were observed. Although expensive, aerial liming is effective in restoring inaccessible sites impacted by smelting operations where other methods cannot easily be used.

A systematic review of antibiotic resistance driven by metal-based nanoparticles: Mechanisms and a call for risk mitigation

Elevations in antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are due not only to the antibiotic burden, but also to numerous environmental pressures (e.g., pesticides, metal ions, or psychotropic pharmaceuticals), which have led to an international public health emergency. Metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) poison bacteria while propelling nanoresistance at ambient or sub-lethal concentrations, acting as a wide spectrum germicidal agent. Awareness of MNPs driven antibiotic resistance has created a surge of investigation into the molecule mechanisms of evolving and spreading environmental antibiotic resistome. Co-occurrence of MNPs resistance and antibiotic resistance emerge in environmental pathogens and benign microbes may entail a crucial outcome for human health. In this review we expound on the systematic mechanism of ARGs proliferation under the stress of MNPs, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced mutation, horizontal gene transfer (HGT) relevant genes regulation, nano-property, quorum sensing, and biofilm formation and highlighting on the momentous contribution of nanoparticle released ion. As antibiotic resistance pattern alteration is closely knit with the mediate activation of nanoparticle in water, soil, manure, or sludge habitats, we have proposed a virulence and evolution based antibiotic resistance risk assessment strategy for MNP contaminated areas and discussed practicable approaches that call for risk management in critical environmental compartments.

Mycorrhizal inoculation effects on growth and the mycobiome of poplar on two phytomanaged sites after 7-year-short rotation coppicing

AIMS

Afforestation of trace-element contaminated soils, notably with fast growing trees, has been demonstrated to be an attractive option for bioremediation due to the lower costs and dispersion of contaminants than conventional cleanup methods. Mycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic associations with plants, contributing to their tolerance towards toxic elements and actively participating to the biorestoration processes. The aim of this study was to deepen our understanding on the effects of mycorrhizal inoculation on plant development and fungal community at two trace-element contaminated sites (Pierrelaye and Fresnes-sur-Escaut, France) planted with poplar (Populus trichocarpa x Populus maximowiczii).

METHODS

The 2 sites were divided into 4 replicated field blocks with a final plant density of 2200 tree h^-1. Half of the trees were inoculated with a commercial inoculum made of a mix of mycorrhizal species. The sites presented different physico-chemical characteristics (e.g., texture: sandy soil versus silty-loam soil and organic matter: 5.7% versus 3.4% for Pierrelaye and Fresnes-sur-Escaut, respectively) and various trace element contamination levels.

RESULTS

After 7 years of plantation, inoculation showed a significant positive effect on poplar biomass production at the two sites. Fungal composition study demonstrated a predominance of the phylum Ascomycota at both sites, with a dominance of Geopora Arenicola and Mortierella elongata, and a higher proportion of ectomycorrhizal and endophytic fungi (with the highest values observed in Fresnes-sur-Escaut: 45% and 28% for ECM and endophytic fungi, respectively), well known for their capacity to have positive effects on plant development in stressful conditions. Furthermore, Pierrelaye site showed higher frequency (%) of mycorrhizal tips for ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECM) and higher intensity (%) of mycorrhizal root cortex colonization for arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) than Fresnes-sur-Escaut site, which translates in a higher level of diversity.

CONCLUSIONS

Finally, this study demonstrated that this biofertilization approach could be recommended as an appropriate phytomanagement strategy, due to its capacity to significantly improve poplar productivity without any perturbations in soil mycobiomes.

Potential ability of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) to phytomanage an urban brownfield soil

The ability of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Badischer Geudertheimer) for phytomanaging and remediating soil ecological functions at a contaminated site was assessed with a potted soil series made by fading an uncontaminated sandy soil with a contaminated sandy soil from the Borifer brownfield site, Bordeaux, SW France, at the 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% addition rates. Activities of sandblasting and painting with metal-based paints occurred for decades at this urban brownfield, polluting the soil with metal(loid)s and organic contaminants, e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, in addition to past backfilling. Total topsoil metal(loid)s (e.g., 54,700 mg Zn and 5060 mg Cu kg-1) exceeded by seven- to tenfold the background values for French sandy soils, but the soil pH was 7.9, and overall, the 1M NH4NO3 extractable soil fractions of metals were relatively low. Leaf area, water content of shoots, and total chlorophyll (Chl) progressively decreased with the soil contamination, but the Chl fluorescence remained constant near its optimum value. Foliar Cu and Zn concentrations varied from 17.8 ± 4.2 (0%) to 27 ± 5 mg Cu kg-1 (100%) and from 60 ± 15 (0%) to 454 ± 53 mg Zn kg-1 (100%), respectively. Foliar Cd concentration peaked up to 1.74 ± 0.09 mg Cd kg-1, and its bioconcentration factor had the highest value (0.2) among those of the metal(loid)s. Few nutrient concentrations in the aboveground plant parts decreased with the soil contamination, e.g., foliar P concentration from 5972 ± 1026 (0%) to 2861 ± 334 mg kg-1 (100%). Vulnerability to drought-induced embolism (P50) did not differ for the tobacco stems across the soil series, whereas their hydraulic efficiency (Ks) declined significantly with increasing soil contamination. Overall, this tobacco cultivar grew relatively well even in the Borifer soil (100%), keeping its photosynthetic system healthy under stress, and contaminant exposure did not increase the vulnerability of the vascular system to drought. This tobacco had a relevant potential to annually phytoextract a part of the bioavailable soil Zn and Cd, i.e., shoot removals representing here 8.8% for Zn and 43.3% for Cd of their 1M NH4NO3 extractable amount in the potted Borifer soil.

Long-Term Effects of Soil Remediation with Willow Short Rotation Coppice on Biogeographic Pattern of Microbial Functional Genes

Short rotation coppice (SRC) is increasingly being adopted for bioenergy production, pollution remediation and land restoration. However, its long-term effects on soil microbial communities are poorly characterized. Here, we studied soil microbial functional genes and their biogeographic pattern under SRC with willow trees as compared to those under permanent grassland (C). GeoChip analysis showed a lower functional gene diversity in SRC than in C soil, whereas microbial ATP and respiration did not change. The SRC soil had lower relative abundances of microbial genes encoding for metal(-oid) resistance, antibiotic resistance and stress-related proteins. This indicates a more benign habitat under SRC for microbial communities after relieving heavy metal stress, consistent with the lower phytoavailability of some metals (i.e., As, Cd, Ni and Zn) and higher total organic carbon, NO₃⁻-N and P concentrations. The microbial taxa–area relationship was valid in both soils, but the space turnover rate was higher under SRC within 0.125 m², which was possibly linked to a more benign environment under SRC, whereas similar values were reached beyond thisarea. Overall, we concluded that SRC management can be considered as a phytotechnology that ameliorates the habitat for soil microorganisms, owing to TOC and nutrient enrichment on the long-term.

Microbial biomass and activity dynamics in restored lands in a metal contaminated region

Soil microbial communities are important for biogeochemical processes, along with the cycling of nutrients in an ecosystem. Their enzymatic activities are key indicators of their responses to stress. The objective of this research was to assess the effect of land reclamation on microbial biomass and activities in soils impacted by metal contamination. Phospholipid fatty acid analysis (PLFA) (PLFA) results revealed a significant increase in total microbial biomass, fungi, actinomycetes, and bacteria when limed soils were compared to unlimed samples. This change in microbial biomass was associated with a significant increase of pH. The overall level of the β-glucosidase (BG), cellobiohydrolase (CBH), and aryl sulfatase (AS) activities was significantly higher in the dolomitic limestone treated soils than in the untreated samples. However, the activity of glycine aminopeptidase (GAP) was significantly lower in the limed soil than in unlimed samples used as reference. No significant differences (P ≥ 0.05) were observed between the two types of lands (limed vs unlimed) for other enzymes tested, which includes β-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAGase), acid phosphatase (AP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), and peroxidase (PER). The levels of enzymatic responses also varied among sites. Overall, this study revealed for the first time the effects of liming on soil microbial activities in recently reclaimed sites damaged by metals.

Integrated Assessment of Cd-contaminated Paddy Soil with Application of Combined Ameliorants: A Three-Year Field Study

Cadmium accumulation in rice is a major source of Cd exposure in humans worldwide. A three-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the ecological safety and long-term stability of biochar combined with lime or silicon fertilizer for Cd immobilization in a polluted rice paddy. The results showed that the application of combined ameliorants could reduce the Cd content in brown rice to meet the Chinese maximum permissible limit for Cd content in food products (0.2 mg/kg). In addition, such amendments stimulated metabolic pathways in soil bacteria, including carbon metabolism, citrate cycle, pyruvate metabolism, biosynthesis of amino acids, and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, revealing improvements in soil biological activity and soil health. Therefore, the results provide a practical strategy for the safe utilization of farmland with mild levels of heavy metal pollution.

Can the Application of Municipal Sewage Sludge Compost in the Aided Phytostabilization Technique Provide an Effective Waste Management Method?

(1) Background: sewage sludge is a by-product of wastewater treatment, which needs to be managed appropriately, e.g., in composting processes. The application of municipal sewage sludge composts (MSSCs) as a soil amendment is a potential way to effectively manage sewage sludge. (2) Methods: this paper presents the results of a vegetation pot experiment undertaken to assess the suitability of Dactylis glomerata L. and MSSC in the aided phytostabilization technique when applied on soils from an area effected by industrial pressure; this is characterized by high levels of heavy metal (HM). The contents of HMs in the test plant (the roots and above-ground parts), as well as in the soil and MSSC, were determined via an atomic spectrometry method. (3) Results: the application of MSSC positively contributed to an increased production of plant biomass and an increase in the pH in the soil. Concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cr were higher in the roots than in the above-ground parts of Dactylis glomerata L. The addition of MSSC contributed most significantly to the considerable reduction in Ni, Pb, and Zn contents in the soil after the experiment. (4) Conclusions: MSSC can support the phytostabilization of soils contaminated with high levels of HMs.

Effects of an additive (hydroxyapatite-bentonite-biochar) on Cd and Pb stabilization and microbial community composition in contaminated vegetable soil

A two-year pot experiment was conducted with a pimiento-celery cabbage (Capsicum annuum L.-Brassica pekinensis) rotation in acidic soil contaminated with Cd and Pb, which was amended with 0.0, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0% (w/w) premixtures of hydroxyapatite, bentonite and biochar combinations (HTB, in a ratio of 1 : 2 : 2). The results showed that the application of HTB at 2.5-10.0% significantly increased soil pH and organic carbon by an average of 10.38-17.60% and 35.60-55.34% during the two years, respectively. Compared to the control treatment, 1.0-10.0% HTB decreased the available Cd and Pb concentrations by 40.92-77.53% and 41.60-82.79% on average, respectively. In addition, the diversity and richness of the soil bacterial community improved after the two-year application of HTB. The relative abundances of Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Chloroflexi increased under the HTB treatments, while those of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria decreased. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and regression analysis indicated that soil pH and Cd and Pb availability were important factors shaping the soil bacterial community. The Cd and Pb concentrations in the edible parts of pimiento and celery cabbage decreased as the HTB application rate increased and met the Food Quality Standard in each season when the HTB application rate was 5.0% or higher. Higher rates of HTB (5.0% and 10.0%) not only ensured the quality of vegetables, but also significantly promoted pimiento and celery cabbage growth. Overall, these results indicated that the application of HTB, especially at a rate of 5.0%, could be an effective way to immobilize Cd and Pb, improve soil quality and ensure vegetables produced in acidic contaminated soil are safe for human consumption.

Insights into the effects of heavy metal pressure driven by long-term treated wastewater irrigation on bacterial communities and nitrogen-transforming genes along vertical soil profiles

Irrigation with treated wastewater (TWW) influences soil ecological function due to the accumulation of heavy metals (HMs) and nutrients in soils. However, the interaction between HMs and microbial processes in TWW-irrigated soil has not been fully explored. We investigated the effect of HMs on bacterial communities and nitrogen-transforming (N-transforming) genes along vertical soil profiles irrigated with domestic TWW (DTWW) and industrial TWW (ITWW) for more than 30 years. Results indicate that long-term TWW irrigation reshaped bacterial community structure and composition. Irrigation with ITWW led to increased accumulation of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Ni in soils than DTWW. Accumulation of inorganic N, soil organic carbon, and HMs in topsoil irrigated with ITWW contributed to the activities of Micrococcaceae. The effect of the activation of nutrient factors on Bacillus, which was the dominant species in DTWW-irrigated soils, was greater than that of HMs. HM pressure driven by ITWW irrigation changed the vertical distribution of N-transforming functional genes, increasing the abundance of amoA gene and decreasing that of nifH through soil depth. ITWW irrigation enhanced the denitrification capacity in topsoil; ammonia-oxidizing capacity in deeper soil was increased after long-term irrigation with DTWW and ITWW, suggesting a potential risk of nitrogen loss.

Keep and promote biodiversity at polluted sites under phytomanagement

The phytomanagement concept combines a sustainable reduction of pollutant linkages at risk-assessed contaminated sites with the generation of both valuable biomass for the (bio)economy and ecosystem services. One of the potential benefits of phytomanagement is the possibility to increase biodiversity in polluted sites. However, the unique biodiversity present in some polluted sites can be severely impacted by the implementation of phytomanagement practices, even resulting in the local extinction of endemic ecotypes or species of great conservation value. Here, we highlight the importance of promoting measures to minimise the potential adverse impact of phytomanagement on biodiversity at polluted sites, as well as recommend practices to increase biodiversity at phytomanaged sites without compromising its effectiveness in terms of reduction of pollutant linkages and the generation of valuable biomass and ecosystem services.

Application of biochar, compost and ZVI nanoparticles for the remediation of As, Cu, Pb and Zn polluted soil

Here we tested the capacity of zero valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) combined with two organic amendments, namely, compost and biochar, to immobilize metal(oid)s such as As, Cu, Pb, and Zn. In addition, the effects of the amendments on the development of Brassica juncea L., a plant widely used for phytoremediation purposes, were also examined. To perform the experiments, pots containing polluted soil were treated with nZVI, compost-biochar, or a blend of compost-biochar-nZVI. Metal(oid)s availability and soil properties were evaluated after 15 and 75 days, and the height and weight of the plants were measured to determine development. The compost-biochar amendment showed excellent capacity to immobilize metals, but As availability was considerably increased. However, the addition of nZVI to the mixture corrected this effect considerably. In addition, soil treatment with nZVI alone led to a slight increase in Cu availability, which was not observed for the mixture with organic amendments. With respect to soil properties, the CEC and pH were enhanced by the compost-biochar amendment, thereby favoring plant growth. Nevertheless, the nanoparticles reduced the concentration of available P, which impaired plant growth to a certain extent. In conclusion, Fe-based nanoparticles combined with organic amendments emerge as powerful approaches to remediate soils contaminated by metals and metalloids.

Field evaluation of one Cu-resistant somaclonal variant and two clones of tobacco for copper phytoextraction at a wood preservation site

A Cu-resistant somaclonal tobacco variant (NBCu 10-8-F1, C1), its BaG mother clone (C3), and the FoP tobacco clone (C2) were cultivated at a wood preservation site on Cu-contaminated soils (239-1290 mg Cu kg-1 soil range) and an uncontaminated control site (CTRL, 21 mg Cu kg-1) to assess their shoot DW yields and potential use for bioavailable Cu stripping. The Cu concentration in the soil pore water varied between 0.15 and 0.84 mg L-1. Influences of Cu exposure and soil treatments, i.e., untreated soil (Unt), soils amended with compost and either dolomitic limestone (OMDL) or zerovalent iron grit (OMZ), on plant growth and shoot ionome were determined. All transplants survived and grew even at high total soil Cu. Shoots were harvested after 3 months (cut 1). Subsequently, bottom suckers developed and were harvested after 2 months (cut 2). Total shoot DW yield (cuts 1 + 2) varied between 0.8 and 9.9 t DW ha-1 year-1 depending on tobacco cultivars, soil treatments, and soil Cu exposure. It peaked for all cultivars in the OMDL plots at moderate Cu exposure (239-518 mg kg-1 soil), notably for the C2 plants. Cut 2 contributed for 11-43% to total shoot DW yield. Increase in shoot DW yield diluted shoot Cu concentration. At low Cu exposure, total shoot Cu removal peaked for the variant. At moderate Cu exposure, shoot Cu concentrations were similar in all cultivars, but total shoot Cu removal was highest for the C2 plants. At high Cu exposure (753-1140 mg kg-1), shoot Cu concentrations peaked for the C2 plants in the Unt plots, the C1 and C2 plants in the OMZ plot, and the C3 ones in the OMDL plots. Shoot Cu removal (in g Cu ha-1 year-1) ranged from 15.4 (C2 on the CTRL soil) to 261.3 (C2 on moderately contaminated OMDL soils). The C2 plants phytoextracted more Cu than the C1 and C3 ones in the Unt plots and in the OMDL plots at moderate Cu exposure. In the OMDL plots with high Cu exposure, shoot Cu removal was highest for the C1 plants. Soil amendments improved shoot Cu removal through increase in either shoot DW yield (OMDL-3-fold) or shoot Cu concentration (OMZ-1.3-fold). Increased shoot Cu concentration induced an ionome imbalance with increased shoot Al, Fe, B, and Mg concentrations and decreased P and K ones. Copper concentrations in plant parts varied in decreasing order: roots > leaves > inflorescence (cymes including seeds) > stem, whereas Cu removal ranked as roots > stem = leaves > inflorescence.

Simultaneous reduction of arsenic and cadmium bioavailability in agriculture soil and their accumulation in Brassica chinensis L. by using minerals

In situ immobilization of heavy metal cations in contaminated soil using natural minerals is an attractive remediation technique. However, little research has focused on the remediation of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) co-contaminated. In this work, three different crystal structures and chemical compositions minerals, zeolite; bentonite; and dolomite, were applied to simultaneously reduce the uptake of As and Cd in Brassica chinensis L., and the mechanism on reducing As and Cd bioavailability in soil were also investigated. The results showed that the three minerals decreased the bioavailability of As and Cd and restrained their uptake by Brassica chinensis L. with the order followed bentonite > zeolite > dolomite. Particularly, bentonite decreased the exchangeable As and Cd by 4.05% and 32.5% and the concentrations of As and Cd in shoots of Brassica chinensis L. by 36.2% and 64.6%, as compared with the controls. Moreover, with the addition of minerals increased, the dry biomass of Brassica chinensis L. and the rhizosphere microbial functional diversity increased significantly, and the highest biomass increased by 289% at 4.0% addition of bentonite. Correlation analysis indicated that the uptake of As and Cd was positive with the available Cd and As in soil, and was negative with soil pH and available N. Furthermore, the Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis illustrated the interaction between minerals and Cd mainly involved ion-exchange and adsorption, while As was mainly immobilized by calcium and magnesium through forming precipitation. In conclusion, this present study implied that the bentonite can be recommended as the more effective amendment to immobilize metal (loid)s in soil and thereby reduce the exposure risk of metal (loid)s associated with grains consumption.

Long-term phytomanagement with compost and a sunflower - Tobacco rotation influences the structural microbial diversity of a Cu-contaminated soil

At a former wood preservation site contaminated with Cu, various phytomanagement options have been assessed in the last decade through physicochemical, ecotoxicological and biological assays. In a field trial at this site, phytomanagement with a crop rotation based on tobacco and sunflower, combined with the incorporation of compost and dolomitic limestone, has proved to be efficient in Cu-associated risk mitigation, ecological soil functions recovery and net gain of economic and social benefits. To demonstrate the long-term effectiveness and sustainability of phytomanagement, we assessed here the influence of this remediation option on the diversity, composition and structure of microbial communities over time, through a metabarcoding approach. After 9 years of phytomanagement, no overall effect was identified on microbial diversity; the soil amendments, notably the repeated compost application, led to shifts in soil microbial populations. This phytomanagement option induced changes in the composition of soil microbial communities, promoting the growth of microbial groups belonging to Alphaproteobacteria, many being involved in N cycling. Populations of Nitrososphaeria, which are crucial in nitrification, as well as taxa from phyla Planctomycetacia, Chloroflexi and Gemmatimonadetes, which are tolerant to metal contamination and adapted to oligotrophic soil conditions, decreased in amended phytomanaged plots. Our study provides an insight into population dynamics within soil microbial communities under long-term phytomanagement, in line with the assessment of soil ecological functions and their recovery.

Immobilization of cadmium and improvement of bacterial community in contaminated soil following a continuous amendment with lime mixed with fertilizers: A four-season field experiment

The effects of the continuous amendments with lime (L), lime mixed with organic manure (LO), or phosphate fertilizer (LP) on the soil bacterial community, soil available cadmium (Cd) content, and Cd accumulation in rice planted in a Cd contaminated paddy soil were determined through a four-season field experiment. The results showed that with continuous application of amendments during the four seasons, the soil pH increased significantly compared with the control, while the soil available Cd content significantly decreased by 12.9-18.2%, 13.1-17.3% and 0.09-23.2% under the L, LO, or LP treatments, and the Cd content of rice was significantly reduced by 28.5-56.2%, 37.6-53.4%, and 31.2-44.6%, respectively. The rice Cd content in each season at amendment treatments was lower than the National Food Safety Standard of China (maximum level of Cd in grains is 0.2 mg/kg). The diversity and richness of soil bacteria significantly increased after the continuous amendments in soil for four-season cropping. Soil pH and available Cd content were important factors for soil bacterial community. Lime mixed with phosphate fertilizer or organic manure had been characterized by a significant increase of Proteobacteria, Nitrospirae, and Chloroflexi and a decrease of Acidobacteria based on an Illumina Miseq sequencing analysis. The results indicate that the continuous application of lime mixed with organic manure or phosphate fertilizer is a very important measure to ensure the quality safety of rice and improve soil quality in a Cd-contaminated paddy.

Effect of Liming with Various Water Regimes on Both Immobilization of Cadmium and Improvement of Bacterial Communities in Contaminated Paddy: A Field Experiment

Cadmium (Cd) in paddy soil is one of the most harmful potentially toxic elements threatening human health. In order to study the effect of lime combined with intermittent and flooding conditions on the soil pH, Cd availability and its accumulation in tissues at the tillering, filling and maturity stages of rice, as well as enzyme activity and the microbial community in contaminated soil, a field experiment was conducted. The results showed that liming under flooding conditions is a more suitable strategy for in situ remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy soil than intermittent conditions. The availability of Cd in soils was closely related to the duration of flooding. Liming was an effective way at reducing available Cd in flooding soil because it promotes the transformation of Cd in soil from acid-extractable to reducible fraction or residual fraction during the reproductive growth period of rice. Compared with control, after liming, the concentration of Cd in brown rice was reduced by 34.9% under intermittent condition while reduced by 55.8% under flooding condition. Meanwhile, phosphatase, urease, and invertase activities in soil increased by 116.7%, 61.4% and 28.8%, and 41.3%, 46.5% and 20.8%, respectively. The high urease activity in tested soils could be used to assess soil recovery with liming for the remediation of contaminated soil. Soil microbial diversity was determined by the activities of soil acid phosphatase, urease and available Cd by redundancy analysis (RDA). The results indicated that the problem of Cd-contaminated paddy soil could achieve risk control of agricultural planting by chemical treatment such as lime, combined with various water regimes.
