The influence of water regime on cadmium uptake by Artemisia: A dominant vegetation in Poyang Lake wetland

An analysis of the influence of water regime on the metal accumulation processes of wetland plants can improve the efficiency of phytoremediation. However, few studies have clearly explored the mechanism of influence of water regime on the process of accumulation of metals by the dominant vegetation in Poyang Lake wetland, the largest freshwater lake in China. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of water regime (Flooding condition [FC], Dry condition [DC] and alternate dry and flooding condition [DFC]) on the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) by Artemisia selengensis Turcz. ex Bess., a dominant plant in the Poyang Lake wetland. The results indicated that FC treatment significantly enhanced the accumulation of Cd by Artemisia roots compared with DFC and DC treatments. In addition, the DFC treatment significantly increased the translocation of Cd from roots to shoots compared with the FC treatment. A multivariate statistical analysis indicated that the rhizosphere Cd fraction, iron plaque on the root surface and rhizosphere pH directly or indirectly significantly influence the process of accumulation of Cd. The conversion of exchangeable fraction to Fe/Mn oxide bound and organic fraction under the DFC and FC treatments decreased the accumulation of Cd in Artemisia. The formation of increased amounts of iron plaque under the FC treatment may enhance the accumulation of Cd in roots, while it may reduce the translocation of Cd to aboveground tissues. In addition, a higher rhizosphere pH under the FC treatment may promote accumulation of Cd in the root by inducing formation of iron plaque. Similarly, compared with the FC treatment, a lower rhizosphere pH and iron plaque can induce the processes of Cd translocation under the DFC treatment. Based on the bioaccumulation factor, translocation factor and the ratio of root/aerial Cd content, treatment with DC benefited the phytoextraction of Cd, while treatment with DFC and FC enhanced the phytostabilization of Cd by Artemisia. This study provides valuable information for deeply understanding the resilience of wetland ecosystems and for enhancing the phytoremediation with wetland plants using water management.

Spatial methods to analyze the relationship between Spanish soil properties and cadmium content

In this study, concentrations of cadmium using 3778 samples encompassing the total size of Spain (about 505 km²) were investgated. Two novel spatial methods namely Moran eigenvector spatially varying coefficient (MESVC) and spatially filtered unconditional quantile regression (SF-UQR) were employed with the aim of avoiding the problem of local collinearity which is prevalent in regression models. Additionally, the spatially varying coefficients methods were applied to assess the influence of soil properties together with soil texture on the spatial variations of cadmium. It was indicated that the overall level of cadmium is low compared to the concentrations found around the world. In particular, the values of Cd varied between 0.01 and 2.00 mgkg^-1, with the median of 0.23 mgkg^-1. The residual standard error and adjusted R² produced by MESVC were 0.16 and 0.69, respectively which are better than 0.21 and 0.39 yielded by the SF-UQR model. Both of these models outperformed compared to the geographically weighted regression (GWR) and the performance of MESVC was also better than the traditional method of kriging. For instance, in terms of willmott index (d) and root mean squared relative error (RMSRE), the MESVC had superior performance with values equal to 0.612 and 0.275 compared to 0.399 and 0.379 obtained for the ordinary kriging. The MESVC and GWR demonstrated that CaCO₃, sand, silt and clay had a negligible influence on spatial variations of cadmium whereas, EC had the largest contribution followed by SOM and pH.

Application of spatial analysis to investigate contribution of VOCs to photochemical ozone creation

This study was concerned with the temporal analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEXs), and ozone in Rochester, New York, between 2012 and 2018. Additionally, the influence of ozone precursors (e.g., BTEXs and NO₂) and meteorological variables (e.g., relative humidity (RH), temperature along with wind speed) on ozone dispersion was investigated in the eastern half of the USA using the integrated nested Laplace approximation and stochastic partial differential equation (INLA-SPDE). The benzene variability at seasonal scale was characterized by higher values during the cold seasons. On the contrary, the long-term temporal trend of ozone depicted a repetitive cyclic behavior while an episode, with values exceeding 5 μg/m³, was detected associated with benzene in 2015. The spatial analysis by INLA-SPDE indicated that 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene and benzene were the key ozone precursors influencing ozone formation. It was demonstrated that increase of temperature had a considerable impact on ozone build-up whereas the increment of RH leads to decrease in ambient values of ozone. The amounts of root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and bias for the validation data (e.g., 32 samples) were 0.005, 0.004, and 0.0008, exhibiting a reasonable out-of-sample forecasting by the INLA-SPDE model. The distribution map of ozone highlighted a hot spot in the state of Florida.

Ecological and health risk assessment of exposure to atmospheric heavy metals

In the present study, we assessed the concentration of airborne HMs (Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd) and their probable sources using the bark of Pinus eldarica as a bio-indicator. Hence, 47 tree bark samples were harvested according to the land uses and biomonitoring techniques in the city of Yazd, Iran. The potential health risks in 13 age groups, ecological risk, as well as the possible relationship between HM concentrations and traffic indicators, were evaluated. The order of average HM concentrations in the P. eldarica bark samples was as Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd. The mean values of non-carcinogenic risks of all HMs in entire age groups were within secure range (HQ < 1); however, the carcinogenic risk of Cd was higher than the allowed level (TCR > 1 × 10^-6). About Pb, it was in the safe level. The main element causing potential ecological risks was Cd, indicating moderate to very high ecological risk in most of the study areas. There was an inverse significant association between distance from major roads and Pb concentration (β = -0.011 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.022, -0.0001). All HMs in bark samples render the negative Moran's index, representing a random spatial distribution pattern. Besides, according to principal component analysis (PCA), the first component accounted for 36.55% of the total variance, dominated by Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn, respectively, and characterized by vehicle and industrial emissions. Our results infer that industrial activities and traffic are the main sources of HMs pollution in urban environments that should be considered by decision-makers.
