Electrocatalytical oxidation of arsenite by reduced graphene oxide via in-situ electrocatalytic generation of H2O2

Advancing H2O2 electrosynthesis: enhancing electrochemical systems, unveiling emerging applications, and seizing opportunities

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a highly desired chemical with a wide range of applications. Recent advancements in H2O2 synthesis center on the electrochemical reduction of oxygen, an environmentally friendly approach that facilitates on-site production. To successfully implement practical-scale, highly efficient electrosynthesis of H2O2, it is critical to meticulously explore both the design of catalytic materials and the engineering of other components of the electrochemical system, as they hold equal importance in this process. Development of promising electrocatalysts with outstanding selectivity and activity is a prerequisite for efficient H2O2 electrosynthesis, while well-configured electrolyzers determine the practical implementation of large-scale H2O2 production. In this review, we systematically summarize fundamental mechanisms and recent achievements in H2O2 electrosynthesis, including electrocatalyst design, electrode optimization, electrolyte engineering, reactor exploration, potential applications, and integrated systems, with an emphasis on active site identification and microenvironment regulation. This review also proposes new insights into the existing challenges and opportunities within this rapidly evolving field, together with perspectives on future development of H2O2 electrosynthesis and its industrial-scale applications.

Long-Term Exposure of Graphene Oxide Suspension to Air Leading to Spontaneous Radical-Driven Degradation

Understanding the environmental transformation and fate of graphene oxide (GO) is critical to estimate its engineering applications and ecological risks. While there have been numerous investigations on the physicochemical stability of GO in prolonged air-exposed solution, the potential generation of reactive radicals and their impact on the structure of GO remain unexplored. In this study, using liquid-PeakForce-mode atomic force microscopy and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectroscopy, we report that prolonged exposure of GO to the solution leads to the generation of nanopores in the 2D network and may even cause the disintegration of its bulk structure into fragment molecules. These fragments can assemble themselves into films with the same height as the GO at the interface. Further mediated electrochemical analysis supports that the electron-donating active components of GO facilitate the conversion of O2 to •O2- radicals on the GO surface, which are subsequently converted to H2O2, ultimately leading to the formation of •OH. We experimentally confirmed that attacks from •OH radicals can break down the C-C bond network of GO, resulting in the degradation of GO into small fragment molecules. Our findings suggest that GO can exhibit chemical instability when released into aqueous solutions for prolonged periods of time, undergoing transformation into fragment molecules through self-generated •OH radicals. This finding not only sheds light on the distinctive fate of GO-based nanomaterials but also offers a guideline for their engineering applications as advanced materials.

Challenges and Future Roadmaps in Heterogeneous Electro-Fenton Process for Wastewater Treatment

The efficiency of heterogeneous electro-Fenton technology on the degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants in wastewater is glaringly obvious. This green technology can be effectively harnessed for addressing ever-increasing water-related challenges. Due to its outstanding performance, eco-friendliness, easy automation, and operability over a wide range of pH, it has garnered significant attention from different wastewater treatment research communities. This review paper briefly discusses the principal mechanism of the electro-Fenton process, the crucial properties of a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst, the heterogeneous electro-Fenton system enabled with Fe-functionalized cathodic materials, and its essential operating parameters. Moreover, the authors comprehensively explored the major challenges that prevent the commercialization of the electro-Fenton process and propose future research pathways to countervail those disconcerting challenges. Synthesizing heterogeneous catalysts by application of advanced materials for maximizing their reusability and stability, the full realization of H₂O₂ activation mechanism, conduction of life-cycle assessment to explore environmental footprints and potential adverse effects of side-products, scale-up from lab-scale to industrial scale, and better reactor design, fabrication of electrodes with state-of-the-art technologies, using the electro-Fenton process for treatment of biological contaminants, application of different effective cells in the electro-Fenton process, hybridization of the electro-Fenton with other wastewater treatments technologies and full-scale analysis of economic costs are key recommendations which deserve considerable scholarly attention. Finally, it concludes that by implementing all the abovementioned gaps, the commercialization of electro-Fenton technology would be a realistic goal.

N-doped graphene aerogel cathode with internal aeration for enhanced degradation of p-nitrophenol by electro-Fenton process

A columnar N-doped graphene aerogel (NGA) was successfully fabricated by one-step hydrothermal synthesis using L-hydroxyproline as reductant, N-doping, and swelling agent, and it was used as the cathode with internal aeration mode for the electro-Fenton degradation of p-nitrophenol. Owing to the stable solid-liquid-gas three-phase interface, more active defects, and modulated nitrogen dopants, the NGA cathode exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity. H₂O₂ could be continuously electro-generated via a two-electron oxygen reduction, and the yield of H₂O₂ was 153.3 mg·L^-1·h^-1 with the low electric energy consumption of 15.3 kWh kg^-1. Simultaneously, the NGA cathode had better charge transfer capability with N-doping, which was conducive to the conversion of Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺. Under the optimal condition, nearly 100% removal of p-nitrophenol and 84% removal of TOC were obtained within 60 and 120 min, respectively. The NGA cathode also presented good stability and versatile applicability in different water matrices. Therefore, the NGA is a cost-effective cathode material in electro-Fenton system with adequate activity and reuse stabilization.

Novel Bifunctional Nitrogen Doped MoS2/COF-C4N Vertical Heterostructures for Electrocatalytic HER and OER

Highly active and earth-abundant catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) play vital roles in developing efficient water splitting to produce hydrogen fuels. Here, we reported an effective strategy to fabricate a completely new nitrogen-doped MoS2/COF-C4N vertical heterojunction (N-MoS2/COF-C4N) as precious-metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts for both HER and OER. Compared with MoS2 and COF-C4N, the obtained vertical N-MoS2/COF-C4N catalyst showed enhanced HER with a low overpotential of 106 mV at 10 mA cm−2, which is six times lower than MoS2. The superior acidic HER activity, molecular mechanism, and charge transfer characteristic of this vertical N-MoS2/COF-C4N were investigated experimentally and theoretically in detail. Its basic OER activity is almost equal to that of COF-C4N with an overpotential of 349 mV at 10 mA cm−2, which showed that the in-situ growing method maintains the exposure of the C active sites to the greatest extent. The preparation and investigation for vertical N-MoS2/COF-C4N provide ideas and a research basis for us to further explore promising overall water-splitting electrocatalysts.

Recent Progress of Electrochemical Production of Hydrogen Peroxide by Two-Electron Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Shifting electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via two-electron pathway becomes increasingly crucial as an alternative/green method for hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) generation. Here, the development of 2e- ORR catalysts in recent years is reviewed, in aspects of reaction mechanism exploration, types of high-performance catalysts, factors to influence catalytic performance, and potential applications of 2e- ORR. Based on the previous theoretical and experimental studies, the underlying 2e- ORR catalytic mechanism is firstly unveiled, in aspect of reaction pathway, thermodynamic free energy diagram, limiting potential, and volcano plots. Then, various types of efficient catalysts for producing H2 O2 via 2e- ORR pathway are summarized. Additionally, the catalytic active sites and factors to influence catalysts' performance, such as electronic structure, carbon defect, functional groups (O, N, B, S, F etc.), synergistic effect, and others (pH, pore structure, steric hindrance effect, etc.) are discussed. The H2 O2 electrogeneration via 2e- ORR also has various potential applications in wastewater treatment, disinfection, organics degradation, and energy storage. Finally, potential future directions and prospects in 2e- ORR catalysts for electrochemically producing H2 O2 are examined. These insights may help develop highly active/selective 2e- ORR catalysts and shape the potential application of this electrochemical H2 O2 producing method.

Abiotic oxidation of arsenite in natural and engineered systems: Mechanisms and related controversies over the last two decades (1999-2020)

Abiotic oxidation of toxic As(III) to As(V) is being deemed as a necessary step for the overall arsenic decontamination in both natural and engineered systems. Direct oxidation of As(III) by chemical oxidants, such as ozone, permanganate, ferrate, chlorine and chloramine, or naturally occurring minerals like Mn, Fe oxides, seems straightforward. Both O₂ and H₂O₂ are ineffective for arsenite oxidation, but they can be activated by reducing substances like Fe²⁺, Fe⁰ to increase the oxidation rates. Photo-induced oxidation of As(III) has been demonstrated effective in Fe complexes or minerals, NO₃^-/NO₂^-, dissolved organic matter (DOM), peroxygens and TiO₂ systems. Although a variety of oxidation methods have been developed over the past two decades, there remain many scientific and technical challenges that must be overcome before the rapid progress in basic knowledge can be translated into environmental benefits. To better understand the trends in the existing data and to identify the knowledge gaps, this review describes in detail the complicated mechanisms for As(III) oxidation by various methods and emphasizes on the conflicting data and explanation. Some prevailing concerns and challenges in the sphere of As(III) oxidation are also pointed out so as to appeal to researchers for further investigations.

Electrochemical recovery and high value-added reutilization of heavy metal ions from wastewater: Recent advances and future trends

Wastewater treatment for heavy metals is currently transitioning from pollution remediation towards resource recovery. As a controllable and environment-friendly method, electrochemical technologies have recently gained significant attention. However, there is a lack of systematic and goal oriented summarize of electrochemical metal recovery techniques, which has inhibited the optimized application of these methods. This review aims at recent advances in electrochemical metal recovery techniques, by comparing different electrochemical recovery methods, attempts to target recycling heavy metal resources with minimize energy consumption, boost recovery efficiency and realize the commercial application. In this review, different electrochemical recovery methods (including E-adsorption recovery, E-oxidation recovery, E-reduction recovery, and E-precipitation recovery) for recovering heavy metals are introduced, followed an analysis of their corresponding mechanisms, influencing factors, and recovery efficiencies. In addition, the mass transfer efficiency can be promoted further through optimizing electrodes and reactors, and multiple technologies (photo-electrochemical and sono-electrochemical) could to be used synergistically improve recovery efficiencies. Finally, the most promising directions for electrochemical recovery of heavy metals are discussed along with the challenges and future opportunities of electrochemical technology in recycling heavy metals from wastewater.

Graphene-Modified Composites and Electrodes and Their Potential Applications in the Electro-Fenton Process

In recent years, graphene-based materials have been identified as an emerging and promising new material in electro-Fenton, with the potential to form highly efficient metal-free catalysts that can be employed in the removal of contaminants from water, conserving precious water resources. In this review, the recent applications of graphene-based materials in electro-Fenton are described and discussed. Initially, homogenous and heterogenous electro-Fenton methods are briefly introduced, highlighting the importance of the generation of H2O2 from the two-electron reduction of dissolved oxygen and its catalysed decomposition to produce reactive and oxidising hydroxy radicals. Next, the promising applications of graphene-based electrodes in promoting this two-electron oxygen reduction reaction are considered and this is followed by an account of the various graphene-based materials that have been used successfully to give highly efficient graphene-based cathodes in electro-Fenton. In particular, graphene-based composites that have been combined with other carbonaceous materials, doped with nitrogen, formed as highly porous aerogels, three-dimensional materials and porous gas diffusion electrodes, used as supports for iron oxides and functionalised with ferrocene and employed in the more effective heterogeneous electro-Fenton, are all reviewed. It is perfectly clear that graphene-based materials have the potential to degrade and mineralise dyes, pharmaceutical compounds, antibiotics, phenolic compounds and show tremendous potential in electro-Fenton and other advanced oxidation processes.
