Abstract
Kelp, the brown alga distributed in coastal areas all over the world, is also an important medicine food homology product in China. However, the levels and profiles of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in kelp have not been thoroughly investigated to date. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and emerging bromine flame retardants (eBFRs) were evaluated in 41 kelp samples from the main kelp producing areas in China. The concentrations of total PCBs, PBDEs and eBFRs were in the range of 0.321-4.24 ng/g dry weight (dw), 0.255-25.5 ng/g dw and 3.00 × 10-3-47.2 ng/g dw in kelp, respectively. The pollutant pattern was dominated by decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE, 13.0 ± 11.7 ng/g dw) followed in decreasing order by BDE-209 (2.74 ± 4.09 ng/g dw), CB-11 (1.32 ± 1.06 ng/g dw). The tested results showed that kelp could reflect the pollution status of PCBs, PBDEs and eBFRs, indicating the suitability of kelp as a biomonitor of these harmful substances. Finally, the data obtained was used to evaluate human non-cancer and cancer risks of PCBs and PBDEs via kelp consumption for Chinese. Though the calculated risk indices were considered acceptable according to the international standards even in the worst scenarios, the POPs levels in kelp should be monitored continuously as a good environmental indicator.

Abstract
Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are a group of emerging contaminants with widespread environmental occurrence, yet research on their occurrence in foodstuffs is limited. We collected 100 foodstuff samples in South China using a market basket method, and analyzed food extracts for the presence of OPEs and organophosphite antioxidants (OPAs) by suspect and nontarget screening through high-resolution mass spectrometry. Our analysis resulted in the identification of 30 OPEs, comprised of 25 OPEs with a confidence level (CL) of 1 (unequivocal identification using standards) and five OPEs with CL = 2b (probable structure based on diagnostic evidence). Interestingly, 11 of these identified OPEs had not been previously reported in food. No OPA was identified. The occurrence of identified OPEs within the food samples was further investigated. The highest median concentration of OPEs in all food samples was reached by tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) (1.55 ng/g ww, range < 0.74-12.0 ng/g wet weight (ww)). Cereals demonstrated the highest median concentration of the cumulative 30 OPEs. Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), TCPP, and triethyl phosphate (TEP) predominantly contributed to OPEs contamination in most food categories. Eight OPEs, namely TEP, tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP), TCEP, triphenyl phosphate (TPhP), 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phenyl phosphate (BEHPP), resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) (RDP), and methyl diphenyl phosphate (MDPP) exhibited significantly higher concentrations in the processed group as compared to non-processed group, suggesting that food processing may result in contamination of these OPEs. The median sum of estimated dietary intake (ΣEDI) of all OPEs was determined to be 161 ng/kg body weight/day. Cereals (38.5 %) and vegetables (23.5 %) were the predominant food categories contributing to ΣEDI, and TEP (29.0 %), TCEP (20.2 %), and TCPP (18.3 %) were three major OPEs contributing to ΣEDI. This study for the first time offered a comprehensive overview of OPE species and revealed their occurrence in foodstuffs from South China.

Abstract
Flame retardants (FRs) are often added to commercial products to achieve flammability resistance, but they are not chemically bonded to the materials, so, they can be easily released into the environment during the production and disposal processes. When honeybees travel to collect nectar during the pollination process, they are prone to be contaminated by chemicals in the air. Therefore, honey contamination has been proposed as an indicator of the pollution status in a particular region. To date, the occurrence of flame retardants in urban honey has yet to be explored. In this study, a direct injection method was used, coupled with LC-QTOF-MS, to analyze honey samples. This method was applied to urban (n = 100) and rural (n = 100) honey samples from the Quebec province (Canada), and the levels of flame retardants in urban and rural honey samples were not significantly different. In the targeted approach, two of the target FRs, tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), were detected and confirmed at an average trace concentration (<1 ng mL-1). Additionally, a non-targeted screening workflow with an in-house-built library was developed and validated to screen for flame retardants in honey. Tris (2-chloropropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) was identified in honey using the non-targeted screening workflow and confirmed using a pure analytical standard, but there are other compounds detected in the non-targeted analysis that have yet to be validated. This study was the first to report FR compounds based on a direct injection method, coupled with a non-targeted screening workflow, at a trace level in a honey matrix. It also showed that a non-targeted workflow was effective to detect and identify unknown compounds present in the honey sample; hence, this provided a novel angle for the occurrence of FRs in air, with honey as a bio-indicator.

Abstract
Although diet is an important route of exposure for brominated flame retardants (BFRs), little is known of their presence in US food. Therefore, we purchased meat, fish, and dairy product samples (n = 72) in Bloomington, IN, from 3 stores representing national retail chains at different price levels. Composite samples (n = 42) were analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), novel BFRs (NBFRs), and dechlorane plus (DP). Concentrations of total halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) ranged between 54 and 1,400 pg/g ww, with PBDEs being the predominant compounds. Concentrations of NBFRs, but not PBDEs, in US food items were significantly impacted by price, raising the issue of environmental justice. Nonorganic food generally had a higher abundance of BDE-209 than organic food items. Estimates of dietary exposure revealed that meat and cheese consumption contribute most to the overall HFR intake and that intakes are highest for children and for non-Hispanic Asians. Taking into account several caveats and limitations of this study, these results as a whole suggest that health burdens from dietary exposure to HFRs have become minimal for US citizens, highlighting the positive impact of regulatory efforts.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the profiles of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in shellfish obtained from Shenzhen coastal waters and assess the potential health risks. We analyzed 74 shellfish samples from eight different species for PBDEs (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, -209). The concentrations of total PBDEs in different shellfish species ranged from 2.02 to 360.17 pg g-1 wet weight, with the highest levels found in Pectinidae, Babylonia areolate, Ostreidae, Perna viridis, Haliotis diversicolor, Corbiculidae, Pinctada margaritifera, and Veneridae in descending order. Among the PBDE congeners analyzed, BDE-47 was the most abundant, followed by BDE-154 and BDE-153. Furthermore, the estimated daily intake of PBDEs through shellfish consumption for Shenzhen residents were between 0.11 and 0.19 ng kg-1(bw) day-1. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically investigate the profiles of PBDEs in eight different shellfish species from Shenzhen's coastal waters and evaluate the potential human health risks associated with shellfish consumption.

Abstract
The agricultural soils in China are suffered from serious polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contamination, however, the valid management standards for farmland are absent to efficiently control the health risks of PCBs exposure. This study analyzed the contamination characteristics and main composition of PCBs in agricultural soils of the southeastern China from the published literature over the past 20 years, and derived the regional generic assessment criteria (GAC) using an exposure modelling approach for individual and total PCBs (∑PCBs) via multiple exposure pathways such as ingestion of soil and dust, consumption of vegetables, dermal contact with soil and dust, ingestion of soil attached to vegetables, and inhalation of soil vapour and soil-derived dust outdoors under the agricultural land scenario. It is identified that the averaged ∑PCBs concentration of 80.03 ng g-1 under the 95 % lower confidence limit with an unacceptable health risk of 4.8 × 10-6 has significantly exceeded the integrated generic assessment criteria (expressed as GACint) of 16.5 ng g-1. Accordingly, the exposure pathways from the consumption of agricultural produces and indirect ingestion of soil attached to vegetables contributed up to 62 %-88 % of the total exposure, followed by 11 %-33 % of the soil ingestion and 2 %-6 % of dermal contact. The derived GACint for ∑PCBs is extremely valuable to effectively assess and manage the PCBs contamination in agricultural soils of China.

Abstract
Fluorinated liquid-crystal monomers (FLCMs) widely used in liquid crystal displays are considered to be a new generation of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic contaminants. They have been widely detected in the environment. However, little is known about their occurrence in food and human dietary exposure until now. Herein, we provided an evaluation of dietary exposure and health risks of FLCMs in the Chinese adult population based on the fifth and sixth total diet studies (TDSs). The detection frequencies of FLCMs in the two surveys were 90.5 and 99.5%, with concentrations ranging from not detected ∼72.6 μg/kg wet weight (ww) and ND ∼74.7 μg/kg ww, respectively. All TDS samples contained the multiresidue of FLCMs. The mean estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of FLCMs were 172.86 and 163.10 ng/kg bw/day in the fifth and sixth TDS, respectively. Meats, vegetables, and cereals contributed the most to the EDI of FLCMs. According to the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) method, the EDIs of 1-fluoro-4-[2-(4-propylphenyl)ethynyl]benzene (4.56 and 3.26 ng/kg bw/day) and 2-fluoro-4-[4'-propyl-1,1'-bi(cyclohexyl)-4-yl]phenyl trifluoromethyl ether (3.12 and 3.28 ng/kg bw/day) were above their TTC value (2.5 ng/kg bw/day), suggesting their potential health risk. This is the first comprehensive national dietary exposure assessment of FLCMs.

Abstract
In this study, a simple, solvent-saving, and sensitive method was established using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry to quantitively determine 16 emerging halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs), including polyhalogenated carbazoles, halogenated phenols, and tetrabromobisphenol-A analogs, and to qualitatively identify non-target HOCs in animal-derived food samples. The sample extracts were physically frozen to remove most lipids and further purified by thin-layer chromatography according to the targets polarity. The method detection limit and method quantification limit of 16 HOCs were in the range of 0.003-9.168 and 0.010-30.601 ng·g-1 dry weight, respectively. The recoveries were within 69.1-111.0 %, the intra/inter-day precisions were 0.1-6.1 % and 0.1-6.7 %, and the matrix effects were between -12.1 and 10.8 %, all within the acceptable range. Finally, 16 HOCs were detected in nine actual samples in range of not detected-307.22 ng·g-1 dry weight. Moreover, five bromides and two chlorides were identified by using non-target analysis in animal-derived foods.

Abstract
Based on the 6th China Total Diet Study (CTDS) conducted in 2016-2019, the occurrence of both legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) was measured in animal-derived foods collected across China. Most BFRs could be frequently detected in food samples, indicating their ubiquity in the environment. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), a typical novel BFR, presented the highest contamination level, whereas legacy BFRs, including decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), still presented high detection frequencies and relatively abundant proportions in total BFRs. Compared with previous CTDSs conducted from 2007 to 2011, the levels and estimated dietary intakes (EDIs) of most BFRs showed a significant downtrend, which suggested that flame retardant consumption in China has transferred from legacy BFRs to novel BFRs (mainly DBDPE) and from BFRs to other kinds of flame retardants. Based on probabilistic estimation, the median EDIs of mainly used BFRs for the Chinese population ranged from 41.0 to 1.67 × 103 pg/kg bw/day, and meat consumption was the primary source in dietary BFR intake. By conducting the margin of exposure (MOE) approach or comparing with the reference dose (RfD), it can be concluded that daily dietary intakes of BFRs were still unable to cause significant health risks to the general population in China.

Abstract
In this study of extracts of 100 food contact material (FCM) samples collected from South China, we identified 21 organophosphate esters (OPEs) by suspect screening and seven novel OPEs by characteristic fragments-based nontarget screening. Six organophosphite antioxidants (OPAs) were further identified using a suspect list derived from these identified OPEs. Of these compounds, 18 OPEs and 3 OPAs were found for the first time in the extracts of FCMs. (Semi-)quantification revealed that seven of the OPEs [triphenyl phosphate, tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (TDtBPP), bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) methyl phosphate, (2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl)pentaerythritol phosphate, triethyl phosphate, 2-ethylhexyl-diphenyl phosphate, and trimethyl phosphate] and two of the OPAs [tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite (TDtBPPi) and pentabutylated triphenyl phosphite] were present in more than 50 FCM samples and that TDtBPP and TDtBPPi were the dominant OPE and OPA in FCMs, respectively [with median concentrations of 7260 ng/g (range: <8.50-103,879 ng/g) and 31,920 ng/g (range: <9.80-657,399 ng/g), respectively]. A migration test revealed that the migration efficiencies of compounds from a plastic coffee cup to food simulants in the cup increased as the ethanol/water ratio in the food simulants increased. This study significantly enhanced our understanding on the diversity and occurrences of OPEs and OPAs in FCMs used in China and their FCM-to-food migration risk.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are ubiquitous flame retardants and are environmentally persistent. PBDEs show endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, and lower birth weight in infants, and their human body burden has become a public health concern. The infants' exposure begins in the prenatal period and continues via breast milk ingestion, although, little is known about the factors that may influence this exposure. In this study, PBDE levels in Brazilian breast milk were assessed in 200 lactating women. The risk assessment of infants' exposure to PBDE was performed through the estimated daily intake (EDI) calculation. The geometric mean (GM) of ∑PBDEs levels was 2.33 (0.14-6.05) ng/g wet weight. At least one PBDE congener was detected in the samples, and the 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) showed a 100% of detection rate (GM of 1.05 ng/g). Location of residence, maternal level education, monthly salary, and race were positively associated with PBDE levels (p < 0.05). The EDI of BDE-47 was higher in Belo Horizonte (8.29 ng/kg/day) than in Viçosa (6.36 ng/kg/day), as well as for the ∑PBDEs (19.77 versus 12.78 ng/kg/day) (p < 0.05). Taking the high detection rate of PBDEs in breast milk and their toxicity, continuous studies on infant exposure, fetal growth, and child neurodevelopment are requested.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of brominated flame-retardants (BFRs). As for other persistent organic pollutants, dietary intake (followed by dust inhalation) is the main route of human exposure to PBDEs. In 2012, we reviewed the scientific literature on the concentrations of PBDEs in foodstuffs and their dietary exposure. The current review is aimed at updating the results of recent studies (2012-2022) focused on determining the levels of PBDEs in food samples, as well as the dietary intake of these compounds. We have revised studies conducted over the world. The current information on the concentrations of PBDEs in food and their dietary intake is now much more notable than that available in our previous review, being China the country contributing with the highest number of studies. Because of the important differences in materials and methods used in the available studies, the comparison of results is certainly complicated. However, there seems to be a general trend towards a decrease in the levels of PBDEs in foods, and consequently, in the dietary intake of these contaminants. The lack of tolerable daily intakes of PBDEs is an issue that needs to be solved for assessing human health risks of these BFRs.

Abstract
With the phase-out of legacy halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), such as decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), emerging ones, such as decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), are being widely produced. We conducted field campaigns to assess the trophic transfer of legacy and emerging HFRs in estuarine and coastal food webs of Laizhou Bay, which are located near the largest HFR manufacturing base in China. Seawater, sediment, plankton, invertebrates, and fish were collected from both sites. BDE-209 was the predominant compound in the estuary, whereas DBDPE was the main contributor to HFRs in the bay, followed by BDE-209. Invertebrates, especially bivalves and sea cucumbers, showed higher levels of BDE-209 and DBDPE than fish. The HFR levels in the organisms of the two coastal zones were comparable to each other, although their concentrations in the estuarine water were one order of magnitude higher than those in the bay. The HFR profiles in benthic organisms were similar to those in the sediments, indicating that the bioaccumulation of HFRs in coastal food webs depended on the habitat. The ΣHFR concentrations followed the order filter-feeding > carnivorous for invertebrates, and demersal non-migratory fish showed higher HFR levels than oceanodromous fish. The trophic magnification factors estimated for BDE-209, dechlorane plus, and DBDPE were lower than 1, suggesting biodilution potential in both food webs, whereas several PBDE congeners exhibited biomagnification capacity. Feeding habits, habitats, hydrophobicity, bioavailability, and metabolism may be the main factors impacting the bioaccumulation of HFRs in organisms in estuarine-coastal ecosystems of northern China.

Abstract
An increasing number of studies on the toxicities of citric acid esters (CAEs)-a class of so-called "safe" alternative plasticizers-have highlighted the urgent need to understand their contamination profiles in foodstuffs and the corresponding potential risks to human health. This study determined the concentrations of 8 target CAEs in 105 foodstuff samples, grouped into 6 food categories, collected from Nanjing City, China, in 2020. All eight CAEs were detected in at least one of the analyzed samples and had detection frequencies (DFs) of 5-47%. The DFs and distribution profiles of the target CAEs varied among different food categories; for example, cereals had the highest DF (92%), while meat/fish contained the highest mean total concentration of CAEs (8.35 ng/g wet weight (ww)). Among the target CAEs, acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC) had the highest DF (47%), and tributyl citrate (TBC) exhibited the highest mean concentration (1.24 ng/g ww). Based on the food ingestion route, the estimated total daily intake (EDI) values of the target CAEs for adults under average- and high-exposure scenarios were 38.3 ng/kg of body weight (bw) and 111 ng/kg bw, respectively, which were attributed to the high percentage contributions of TBC (50.6%) and ATBC (23.7%). In addition, a suspect and characteristic fragment-dependent screening strategy was applied to the foodstuff data, and a novel CAE, monoethyl citrate (MEC, CAS: 4552-00-5), with a DF of 34% was tentatively identified. Overall, this study provides novel and comprehensive information regarding the pollution status of CAEs in foodstuffs.

Abstract
China produces and consumes large quantities of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) as well as several other unregulated electronic waste recycling activities, causing high BFR concentrations in the natural environment. Thus, Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCMs) may be contaminated by legacy BFRs (e.g. polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)) and emerging BFRs (eBFRs, such as decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE)) during growth, processing, packaging, and transportation. Pheretima, which is a typical animal drug recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia, was used as an example to evaluate human exposure to BFRs through TCM intake. This study is the first to determine 25 PBDEs and 5 eBFRs in Pheretima and estimate the daily BFR intake via Pheretima-containing TCMs. Twenty-seven Shanghai Pheretima and fifty-one Guang Pheretima samples were collected between March and June 2019 in southeast China. High BFR detection frequencies were found in Pheretima, of which BDE-209 and DBDPE were the most predominant analytes. The total PBDE contents ranged from 73 pg/g to 8,725 pg/g, while that of the eBFRs varied between 115 pg/g and 2,824 pg/g. The profiles and abundances were found to be species- and origin-dependent. However, the traditional processing of Pheretima may reduce BFR residues. Based on the usual clinical doses of Pheretima and the available chronic oral reference doses of BDE-47, 99, 153, and 209, the mean (95th percentile) of the total hazard quotient was estimated to be 9.1 × 10-5 (2.7 × 10-4). Therefore, there is little risk related to BFR exposure for patients taking formulated Pheretima-containing TCMs. However, it is necessary to establish routine monitoring programs for the co-existence of pollutants in TCMs to perform a systematic and comprehensive risk assessment.

Abstract
The brominated flame retardants (BFRs), 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2 dibromoethyl)cyclohexane (TBECH) and 2,3-dibromopropyl-2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (DPTE) bind to the androgen receptor (AR). in vitro bioassays have shown that TBECH is a potent androgen agonist while DPTE is a potent AR antagonist. Both TBECH and DPTE alter gene expression associated with AR regulation. However, it remains to be determined if TBECH and DPTE can affect the prostate. For this reason, we exposed CD1 mice to a 1:1 mixture of TBECH diastereomers α and β, a 1:1 mixture of γ and δ, and to DPTE, and tested their effects on prostate growth, histology and gene expression profiles. Castrated mice were used to study the androgenic effects of TBECHαβ and TBECHγδ while the antagonistic effects of DPTE were studied in non-castrated mice. We observed that testosterone and TBECHγδ increased body and prostate weights while TBECHαβ affected neither of them; and that DPTE had no effect on body weight but reduced prostate weight drastically. Histomorphometric analysis of the prostate revealed epithelial and glandular alterations in the TBECHγδ group comparable to those in testosterone group while alterations in the TBECHαβ group were less pronounced. DPTE displayed androgen antagonist activity reminiscent of castration. The transcription profile of the prostate was altered by castration and exposure to testosterone and to TBECHγδ reversed several of these changes. Testosterone and TBECHγδ also regulated the expression of several androgen responsive genes implicated in prostate growth and cancer. While DPTE resulted in a drastic reduction in prostate weight, it only affected a small number of genes. The results indicate that TBECHγδ and DPTE are of high human health concern as they may contribute to changes in prostate growth, histology and function.

Abstract
Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) have been proposed to be persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) substances; however, there is a dearth of information regarding their occurrence in sediment samples. Here, an analytical method was developed for the quantitative determination of LCMs in sediment samples, and n = 76 sediment samples were collected and analyzed to determine accurate concentrations of LCMs. Our results indicated that the developed pretreatment procedure was applicable for the determination of LCM concentrations in sediments. We observed that LCMs were detected in 75 out of the 76 sediment samples, and 23, 18, and 14 out of the 39 target LCMs were quantified in at least one of the analyzed sediments from rivers around LCM or liquid crystal device (LCD) manufacturers, Taihu Lake, and rivers around e-waste recycling sites, respectively. The LCMs in the samples from rivers around LCM/LCD manufacturers exhibited the greatest mean concentrations of 26.1 ng/g dry weight (dw), followed by those from e-waste recycling site areas (1.15 ng/g dw) and Taihu Lake (0.076 ng/g dw). Collectively, this study provided the first analytical method that was able to quantify the concentrations of LCMs in sediment samples and provided the first evidence for the occurrence of LCMs in sediment samples.

Abstract
This study was performed to assess the Latvian population exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDD), dechlorane-related compounds (DRCs), and emerging brominated flame retardants (EBFRs). Food items including fish, fish products, meat, dairy products, cereals and bread, eggs, vegetable oils, and sweets were analyzed for the content of these contaminants, followed by per capita intake calculations and risk assessment. The highest dietary exposure for general population was observed in the case of HBCDD, .reaching an estimated daily intake (EDI) value of 2.92 ng kg-1 b.w. (or 3.35 ng kg-1 b.w. if an outlying data point is included), followed by PBDEs with EDI of 1.24 ng kg-1 b.w., including ~25% contribution of PBDE-209 to the overall EDI from PBDEs. DRCs and EBFRs were secondary contributors to the total intake of selected flame retardants (FRs), with the observed EDIs of 0.46 and 0.47 ng kg-1 b.w, respectively. The obtained occurrence data and risk characterization according to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) approach showed the calculated margin of exposure (MOE) values higher than the critical values for PBDE-47, -99 and -153as well as for HBCDD, indicating that the estimated dietary exposures are unlikely to be of significant health concern for the Latvian population. At the same time, it should be pointed out that the risk assessment was performed only for five out of the twenty-five selected halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), while cumulative effects due to the potential presence of other HFRs and their biodegradation products were not considered.

Abstract
As a class of alternative flame retardants, "novel" brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) have been widely used in clothing, textiles, electronics, building materials, and plastics and are frequently found in environmental samples. Although the use and discharge of NBFRs are increasing all over the world, little information is available about their fates and removal in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study investigated the occurrence and behavior of 2,4,6-tribromophenyl allyl ether (ATE), 2,3-dibromopropyl tribromophenyl ether (DPTE), tetrabromo-o-chlorotoluene (TBCT), pentabromobenzyl acrylate (PBBA), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE), bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrabromo-phthalate (TBPH), and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) in a municipal WWTP in Beijing, China. Four of the NBFRs (ATE, BTBPE, TBPH, and DBDPE) were detected in all wastewater and biosolid samples. The dominant compound in both wastewater and biosolid samples was DBDPE, with concentrations in the ranges of 6.4-18 ng/L and 83-288 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively. A mass flow analysis indicated that the overall removal efficiencies were 31±18% for ATE, 97±1.5% for DPTE, 79±11% for BTBPE, 87±5.3% for TBPH, and 93±3.3% for DBDPE, but the removal efficiency in aqueous phase only ranged from -43 (ATE) to 57% (DBDPE). The low and negative removal efficiencies of ATE were possibly due to the transformation of DPTE during the anaerobic treatment processes. Under the aerobic conditions, BTBPE, TBPH and DBDPE underwent a very slow biodegradation. A total of 68-91% of the initial mass loadings of ATE, BTBPE, TBPH and DBDPE were found in the biosolid samples, suggesting that the four NBFRs were removed mainly via sorption in the WWTP.The biosolid was a huge reservoir of target NBFRs, and effective removal of NBFRs during treatment in the WWTP is critical.
