Abstract
Apparent temperature (AT) is a composite index that combines ambient temperature, humidity, wind speed and other meteorological factors, and reflects heat perception more accurately than raw temperature. This is the first study to investigate the association between AT and CVD in rural areas of Jiuquan and Longnan, Gansu Province, China. In this study, the distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to examine the exposure-response relationship between AT and the 21 days relative risk (RR) of CVD admission. The results showed that the exposure risk of the gender group in Jiuquan was opposite to that of Longnan under the influence of cold effect. Under the influence of heat effect, it has a protective effect on all groups in Jiuquan area, which is harmful to males and adults in Longnan area. The results of this study can help local governments to formulate public policies.

Abstract
Anemia in pregnancy (AIP) is associated with multiple severe maternal and perinatal adverse outcomes. However, there is a lack of evidence on the association between environmental factors and AIP. Aim to explore the association between ambient temperature and the risk of AIP, and identify susceptible exposure windows, we conducted a matched case-control study from 2013 to 2016 in Xi'an, China, which included 710 women with AIP and 1420 women without AIP. The conditional logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between ambient temperature and AIP at different gestational weeks and gestational months. The association between extreme temperature and AIP was evaluated using the distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM). We conducted stratified analyses of age, parity, and season of conception, and estimated the interaction between ambient temperature and air pollutants on AIP. Ambient temperature was significantly positively associated with the risk of AIP, and the susceptible exposure windows were 2-25 gestational weeks and 1-6 gestational months, respectively. The strongest effect was observed in the week 8 and month 2, for each 1 °C increase in weekly and monthly mean temperature, the odds ratio (OR) for AIP was 1.038 (95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.022, 1.055) and 1.040 (95 % CI: 1.020, 1.060), respectively. Extreme heat may increase the risk of AIP. Stratified analyses showed that there was no significant difference among different age, parity, and season of conception groups. No significant interaction effect of ambient temperature with air pollution on AIP was found. In summary, high ambient temperature may increase the risk of AIP, and the first and second trimesters may be susceptible exposure windows. Understanding the effect of temperature on pregnant women will be beneficial to reduce the occurrence of AIP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mounting evidence has demonstrated that high temperature was associated with adverse health outcomes, especially morbidity and mortality. Nonetheless, the impact of extreme high temperature on cognitive performance, which is the fundamental capacity for interpreting one's surroundings, decision-making, and acquiring new abilities, has not been thoroughly investigated. METHODS We aimed to assess associations between extreme high temperature at different time scales and poor cognitive function. We used longitudinal survey data from the three waves of data from China Family Panel Study, providing an 8-year follow-up of 53,008 participants from China. We assessed temperature and extreme high temperature exposure for each participant based on the residential area and date of cognitive test. We defined the proportion of days/hours above 32 °C as the metric of the exposure to extreme high temperature. Then we used generalized additive model and difference-in-differences approach to explore the associations between extreme high temperature and cognitive function. RESULTS Our results demonstrated that either acute exposure or long-term exposure to extreme high temperature was associated with cognitive decline. At hourly level, 0-1 hour acute exposure to extreme high temperature would induce -0.93 % (95 % CI: -1.46 %, -0.39 %) cognitive change. At annual level, 10 percentage point increase in the hours proportion exceeding 32 °C in the past two years induced -9.87 % (95 % CI: -13.99 %, -5.75 %) cognitive change. Furthermore, subgroup analyses indicated adaptation effect: for the same 10 percentage increase in hours proportion exceeding 32 °C, people in warmer areas had cognitive change of -6.41 % (-11.22 %, -1.61 %), compared with -15.30 % (-21.07 %, -9.53 %) for people in cool areas. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated that extreme high temperature was associated with reduced cognitive function at hourly, daily and annual levels, warning that people should take better measures to protect the cognitive function in the context of climate change.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Little is known about spatial variability of hospitalisation rate (HR) of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) worldwide, especially in China. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with RA admitted to hospitals in Hunan Province. Global Moran's I and local indicators of spatial association were used to explore the geospatial pattern of the HR of patients with RA. Generalised estimating equation analysis and geographically weighted regression were used to identify the potential influencing factors of the HR of patients with RA. RESULTS There were a total of 11 599 admissions, and the average HR was 1.57 per 10 000 population in Hunan. We detected different cluster patterns of the HR among patients with RA by local indicators of spatial association. Age, ethnicity, average temperature, average temperature range, average rainfall, regions, gross domestic product per capita, and doctors and hospitals per 10 000 people were risk factors for the HR. However, only average temperature, gross domestic product per capita and hospitals per 10 000 people showed different regression coefficients on the HR in different counties. The increase in hospitals increased the probability of HR from east to west in Hunan with a positive coefficient, while temperature decreases increased the risk of HR from south to north negatively. Similarly, the growth of gross domestic product per capita decreased the probability of HR from southwest to northeast. CONCLUSION A non-random spatial distribution of the HR of patients with RA was demonstrated in Hunan, and average temperature, gross domestic product per capita and hospitals per 10 000 people showed different regression coefficients on the HR in different counties. Our study indicated that spatial and geostatistics may be useful approaches for further study among patients with RA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between residential greenspace and preterm birth (PTB) risk remained inconclusive. The PTB subtypes have been ignored and the effect of co-exposure of PM2.5 on PTB risk is still unclear. OBJECTIVE To investigate the independent, interactive, and mixed effects of residential greenspace and PM2.5 on the risk of PTB subtypes. METHODS A total of 19,900 singleton births from 20 hospitals in Shanghai, China, from 2015 to 2017 were included. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) within 500 m and 1000 m buffers of the maternal residence and a combined geoscience-statistical model-derived PM2.5 and its six components were used as the exposure measures. PTB (<37 completed weeks of gestation) were divided into early PTB (24-33 weeks) vs. late PTB (34-36 weeks) and into spontaneous PTB (sPTB), preterm premature rupture of the fetal membranes (PPROM), and iatrogenic PTB. Multivariable logistic regression models were applied to assess the independent and interactive effects of NDVI and PM2.5 on PTB in each trimester. The quantile g-computation approach was employed to explore the mixture effect of PM2.5 components and greenspace across the pregnancy and to determine the main contributors. RESULTS Levels of PM2.5 and greenspace were associated with increased [aOR (95%CI) ranging from 1.18 (1.07, 1.30) to 3.36 (2.45, 4.64)] and decreased risks [aORs (95%CI) ranging from 0.64 (0.53, 0.78) to 0.86 (0.73, 0.99)] of PTB subtypes, respectively. At the same PM2.5 level, higher residential greenspace was associated with lower risks, and vice versa. All these associations were more pronounced in late pregnancy. Early PTB and PPROM were the main affected subtypes, and the main drivers in PM2.5 were black carbon and ammonium. CONCLUSIONS Residential greenspace may mitigate the PTB risks due to PM2.5 exposure during pregnancy.

Abstract
Childhood anemia constitutes a global public health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, it remains unknown whether global warming has an impact on childhood anemia. Here, we examined the association between annual temperatures and childhood anemia prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa and then projected childhood anemia burden attributable to climate change. Each 1°C increment in annual temperature was associated with increased odds of childhood anemia (odd ratio = 1.138, 95% confidence interval: 1.134-1.142). Compared with the baseline period (1985-2014), the attributable childhood anemia cases would increase by 7,597 per 100,000 person-years under a high-emission scenario in the 2090s, which would be almost 2-fold and over 3-fold more than those projected in moderate- and low-emission scenarios. Our results reveal the vulnerabilities and inequalities of children for the excess burden of anemia due to climate warming and highlight the importance of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies in LMICs.

Abstract
Increasing evidence has revealed that exposure to low temperatures is linked to a higher risk of chronic diseases and death; however, the mechanisms underlying the observed associations are still poorly understood. We performed a cross-sectional analysis with 1115 participants from the population-based KORA F4 study, which was conducted in Augsburg, Germany, from 2006 to 2008. Seventy-one inflammation-related protein biomarkers were analyzed in serum using proximity extension assay technology. We employed generalized additive models to explore short- and medium-term effects of air temperature on biomarkers of subclinical inflammation at cumulative lags of 0-1 days, 2-6 days, 0-13 days, 0-27 days, and 0-55 days. We found that short- and medium-term exposures to lower air temperature were associated with higher levels in 64 biomarkers of subclinical inflammation, such as Protein S100-A12 (EN-RAGE), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-10 (IL-10), C-C motif chemokine 28 (CCL28), and Neurotrophin-3 (NT-3). More pronounced associations between lower air temperature and higher biomarker of subclinical inflammation were observed among older participants, people with cardiovascular disease or prediabetes/diabetes, and people exposed to higher levels of air pollution (PM2.5, NO2, and O3). Our findings provide intriguing insight into how low air temperature may cause adverse health effects by activating inflammatory pathways.

Impact of diurnal temperature range on hospital admissions for cerebrovascular disease among farmers in Northwest China. Sci Rep 2022; 12:15368. Abstract
Diurnal temperature range (DTR) is an appropriate indicator for reflecting climate change. Many previous studies have examined the relationship between DTR and mortality. Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) have a higher mortality than other diseases, with mortality from CVD higher in rural areas than in urban areas. A distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was used to analyze the exposure-effect relationship between DTR and hospital admissions for CVD from 2018 to 2020 in the population living in rural areas of Tianshui, Gansu Province, China. We investigated the effects of extreme DTR in groups stratified according to gender and age. A U-shape relationship was observed between DTR and hospital admissions for CVD. Both high DTR (19 °C) and low DTR (3 °C) were significantly associated significantly with CVD hospital admissions. When the lag period was 0-21 days, the impact of high DTR (1.595 [95% CI 1.301-1.957]) was slightly more significant than that of a low DTR (1.579 [95% CI - 1.202 to 2.075]). The effect of DTR on CVD varied in different populations. Males and adults were more sensitive to DTR than females and elderly people. It is necessary to make preventive measures to protect vulnerable populations from the adverse effects of extreme DTR.

Abstract
Gout is a chronic disease with inflammatory arthritis caused by monosodium urate (MSU) crystals deposition, an elevated serum urate level (hyperuricaemia) is the critical factor leading to MSU crystals deposition and promoting the progression of gout. The onset and development of gout is generally the result of multiple factors, such as diet, heredity and environmental factors. Although genetics and diet are thought to play as major factors, a growing body of research evidence has highlighted that environmental factors also play a significant role in the onset and exacerbation of gout. Recent studies have shown that air pollutants such as particulate matter, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) may increase the risk of hospitalizations for gout, and that the changes in temperature and humidity may affect uric acid (UA) levels. There is also seasonal trend in gout. It has been demonstrated that environmental factors may induce or accelerate the production and release of pro-inflammatory mediators, causing an unbalance oxidative stress and systemic inflammation, and then participating in the overall process or a certain link of gout. Moreover, several environmental factors have shown the ability to induce the production urate and regulate the innate immune pathways, involving in the pathogenesis of gout. Nevertheless, the role of environmental factors in the etiology of gout remains unclear. In this review, we summarized the recent literatures and aimed to discuss the relationship between environmental factors (such as microclimate, season, ambient/indoor air pollution and extreme weather) and gout. We further discussed the inflammatory mechanisms of environmental factors and gout and the comprehensive effects of environmental factors on gout. We also made a prospect of the management and treatment of gout, with special consideration to environmental factors associated with gout.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No studies focused on impact of temperature changes between neighboring days (TCN) on cardiovascular disease (CVD) hospital admissions among suburban farmers although CVD has been the main cause to global mortality and disability especially in undeveloped and developing countries/areas. METHOD Daily data of CVD hospital admissions on suburban farmers and daily data of meteorology in Qingyang (China) were collected during 2011-2015. A distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was applied to explore the exposure-response relations and lagged effects between TCN and CVD hospital admissions with stratified analyses by age and gender. Extreme low TCN effects and burden analysis were conducted. RESULTS Based on 25,984 cases in Qingyang (China) during 2011-2015 among suburban farmers, we found that, first, nonlinear relationship was observed between TCN and CVD hospital admissions and adverse impact in negative TCN (temperature dropping between neighboring days) while protective effect in positive TCN (temperature rising between neighboring days) were discovered; third, during lag0-27, the cumulative relative risk (RR) for extreme low TCN (5th percentile, - 3.5 °C) and extreme high TCN (95th percentile, 3 °C) was 29.55 (95% CI 4.709-185.436) and 0.040 (95% CI 0.009-0.169), respectively; fourth, the age < 65 and females were more vulnerable to negative TCN than the age ≥ 65 and males among suburban farmers, respectively; last, moderate low TCN contributed the most fractions and numbers on CVD hospital admissions. CONCLUSIONS Among Qingyang suburban farmers in Northwest China, negative TCN should be paid more attention.

Abstract
Climate change is increasing the incidence of extreme weather events which have a significant impact on public health. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number one cause of death globally (40%). Apparent temperature (AT) and diurnal temperature range (DTR) have been extensively used to evaluate the effects of temperature on cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the relevant information is quite limited from analysis and comparison of effects and differing pathogenesis of DTR and AT on CVD especially in less-developed, rural areas of China. This is the first attempt to analyze different effects between AT and DTR on CVD using distributed lag nonlinear modeling (DLNM) in rural area. Data on CVD hospital admission in Qingyang (Northwest China) in 2014-2017 originated from the New Rural Cooperative Medical System (NRCMS) of Gansu Province, and meteorological variables were provided by the Meteorological Science Data Sharing Service. Both AT and DTR had significant nonlinear and delayed impacts on hospital admissions for CVD. DTR had a stronger and more persistent effect on CVD incidence than AT. Females were more affected by high AT and low DTR than were males, while males were more vulnerable to low AT and high DTR. Temperature effects were not significantly different between people above and below 65 years of age. These findings provide local public health authorities with reference concerning sensitive temperature indices for susceptible populations with a view to improve CVD preventive strategies in rural areas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The seasonal variation of oral diseases has been observed in life, but the influences of oral diseases associated with non-optimal ambient temperature were unknown. OBJECTIVE To examine whether non-optimum ambient temperature is associated with increased risks of oral diseases. METHODS We conducted a time series study based on outpatient data from the Shanghai Health Information Center, containing all public hospitals in Shanghai from 2016 to 2019. Generalized additive models with distributed lagged nonlinear models were applied to fit the data. RESULT A total of 3,882,636 outpatient cases of oral diseases were collected. Low temperature (<7 °C) posed increased risks for oral diseases. Daily temperature above 7 °C had no effect on oral diseases. The excess risks were present on the lag 1 day and lasted till lag 7 day. Relative to referent temperatures, the cumulative risks of total oral diseases, pulpitis, periodontitis, gum pain, stomatitis, and glossitis at extreme low temperature (-3 °C, 1st percentile) over lag 0-7 day were 1.92 (95% confidence interval, CI: 1.40, 2.63), 2.40 (95% CI: 1.78, 3.25), 1.62 (95% CI: 1.15, 2.29), 1.75 (95% CI: 1.08, 2.83), 1.81 (95% CI: 1.30, 2.53), and 2.22 (95% CI: 1.23, 3.99). These associations were larger in patients who were above age 60. CONCLUSION This study provided novel epidemiological evidence that low ambient temperature may increase the risks of oral diseases. The temperature thresholds for eight oral diseases range from 3 to 7 °C. The excess risks could last for 7 days and were larger in older patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Evidence for the effects of temperature variability on risk of congenital anomalies is lacking. We aimed to examine the association of temperature variability during fetal organogenesis period (weeks 3-8 post-conception) with major congenital anomalies. METHODS A retrospective cohort study comprising 4,787,356 singleton live-births and stillbirths in China was performed. We defined two temperature variability indices within gestational week i: the standard deviation (SD) of daily temperature (TVSDi) and the maximum day-to-day temperature difference (TVDi). At 6-week long timescales, we computed the SD of daily temperature (TVSD3-8) and the average value of TVDi (TVD3-8). We matched two temperature variability indices, pollutant exposure levels over entire exposure window and data of each mother-infant pairs. An extended generalized estimating equation log-binomial regression model was constructed to explore their associations after adjusting for individual characters, temperature extremes and air pollutants. Stratified and sensitivity analyses were also performed. RESULTS 59,571 neonates were registered as major congenital anomalies besides genetic and chromosomal anomalies. At weekly levels, the highest risk estimates of two temperature variability indices occurred at the 5th week for most anomaly groups. All TVSD5, TVD5, and maximum weekly TVSD and TVD were significantly associated with all anomaly groups; with the increment of 1 °C, the estimated risk ratio (RR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) ranges from 1.03 (1.01-1.05) to 1.19 (1.08-1.31). At 6-week scales, TVSD3-8 and TVD3-8 were associated with most anomaly subgroups. Overall, the strongest associations were estimated for isolated defects among morphology subgroups and cardiac defects among type subgroups. CONCLUSIONS Exposure to temperature variability during fetal organogenesis period of pregnancy is associated with increased risk of major congenital defects. Our findings provide a research foundation for public health policies, and further mechanism investigation.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), reported to relate with climate change, is the leading cause of global mortality and morbidity. Since the relevant information is quite limited from suburbs and countryside in developing and underdeveloped countries, there are no studies that focused on morbidity through diurnal temperature range (DTR) for these regions. This is the first study to evaluate the short-term effect of DTR on CVD hospital admission in suburban farmers, as well as to identify vulnerable subpopulations. Daily time series data of CVD hospital admissions on suburban farmers of Qingyang, China, and meteorological data from 2011 to 2015 were collected, and a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) combined with a quasi-Poisson generalized additive regression model (GAM) was used to examine the exposure-response relationship and delayed effect between DTR and CVD hospital admissions. Stratified analyses by age and gender were performed and extreme DTR effects were examined. Non-linear relation between DTR and CVD hospital admissions was observed, and whether DTR lower or higher than the reference (13 °C, 50th percentile) had adverse effect while lower DTR have slightly higher impact. Also, both extreme low and extreme high DTR had adverse effect. Besides, adults (age < 65) and males were more vulnerable to the effects of DTR compared with the old (age ≥ 65) and females, respectively. This study provides evidence that not only high DTR but also low DTR had adverse effects on CVD which should be paid attention to. Adults and males were more vulnerable among suburban farmers. The results are inconsistent with the studies from urban and indicate differences between urban and suburban residents. Multiple factors such as occupations, risk awareness, and lifestyles could have a significant influence on CVD morbidity, and further study is needed to explore more evidence.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the application of serum amyloid A (SAA) in the outcome of upper respiratory tract infection in children by analyzing the correlation between the change of mean air temperature and the positive rate of SAA detection in children. Daily data on upper respiratory tract infection diseases and weather conditions were collected in 2016-2019. A quasi-Poisson regression with a distributed lag non-linear model was used to examine the association between temperature and SAA-positive rate. The positive rate of SAA had a moderate correlation with the temperature and a weak correlation with relative humidity. Low ambient temperature (7 °C, P1) was related to the increase in the positive rate of SAA, with the effect lag for 0-7 days (RR 1.34 (1.19~1.74)). The increase in the SAA-positive case induced by 27 °C (P75) could last for 0-14 days (RR 1.07 (1.01-1.08)), and high temperature (30 °C, P99) could reduce the positive rate of SAA. Our findings add additional evidence to the adverse effects of sub-optimal ambient temperature and provide useful information for public health programs targeting pediatric patients.

Abstract
Previous observational studies have shown that exposure to ambient temperature and air pollution were associated with the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, the susceptible time window of non-optimal temperature on GDM is still unknown, and the interaction with air pollution has not been examined. We conducted a prospective cohort study in Guangzhou, China to investigate the windows of susceptibility of temperature extremes and variability on the risk of GDM and to explore any interaction effect with air pollution. Daily maximum (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin) and diurnal temperature range (DTR) were obtained from Guangdong Meteorological Service. Distributed lag non-linear models with a logistic regression were applied to assess the effect of temperature extremes and DTR in different weeks of gestation on GDM. To examine the interaction effect, relative excess risk due to interaction index, attributable proportion and synergy index were calculated. There were 5,165 pregnant women enrolled, of which 604 were diagnosed with GDM (11.7%). Compared with a reference temperature (50th percentile of Tmax), we found that extreme high temperature (99th percentile of Tmax) exposure during 21st and 22nd gestational weeks was associated with an increased risk of GDM. Extreme low temperature (1st percentile of Tmax) exposure during 14th to 17th weeks increased the risk of GDM. We observed that per 1 °C increment of DTR during 21st to 24th weeks was associated with an elevated GDM risk. No interaction effect of temperature extremes or variability with air pollution on GDM were observed. Our results suggested that non-optimal temperature is an independent risk factor of GDM. The time window of susceptibility for extreme temperatures and DTR exposure on the risk of GDM generally occurred in second trimester of pregnancy. In the context of climate change, our study has important implications for reproductive health and justifies more research in different climate zones.

Abstract
Background Diurnal temperature range (DTR) has been widely applied in exploring its effect on cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few studies have investigated the correlations between DTR and CVD in poor rural areas in China. This study aimed to examine the association between DTR and CVD in rural China. Methods A distributed lag nonlinear model was used to evaluate the relationship between DTR and CVD risk among farmers living in the city of Dingxi (Northwest China) in the period from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2019. Results We observed nonlinear M-patterns between the relative risk (RR) of DTR (reference: median DTR, 12 °C) and CVD hospitalizations in all subgroups. The peak RR of CVD was noticed at DTR of 6 °C (total: 1.418; men: 1.546; women: 1.403; young: 1.778; old: 2.549) and 17 °C (total: 1.781; men: 1.937; women: 1.712; young: 2.233; old: 1.798). The adverse effect of DTR on CVD risk was more pronounced in females (RR 1.438) and elderly (RR 2.034) than males (RR 1.141) and younger adults (RR 1.852) at the extremely low (5th, 4 °C) DTR. The reverse was observed at the extremely high DTR (95th, 19 °C) (male: 1.267; females: 0.993; young: 1.586; old: 1.212). Conclusions DTR is associated with CVD morbidity. This association was more pronounced in women and elderly, but men and younger peoples at extremely high DTR (19 °C). Future measures should take DTR into account to prevent CVD among susceptible populations. Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been a major threat to global public health. The association between temperature and CVD has been widely studied and reported in cities in developed countries. However, information from developing countries, especially from suburbs and countryside, is quite limited. In this study, the daily time series data on CVD hospital admissions in farmers in the suburbs of Tianshui, China, and the meteorological data from 2012 to 2015, were collected; besides, a quasi-Poisson regression with a distributed-lag non-linear model (DLNM) was used to explore the impact of local daily mean temperature on CVD hospital admissions in suburban farmers. This study found that, first, from 2011 to 2015, a total of 30,611 person-times of CVD hospital admissions in farmers were recorded; second, there was a "J-shaped" relation between temperature and CVD hospital admissions, and both low and high temperature increased the risk of hospital admission, but the impact of high temperature was greater; third, compared with the minimum hospitalization temperature (MHT) at 0.3 °C, during 0 to 21 lag days, the cumulative relative risk (RR) for extreme cold and heat (1st and 99th percentile of temperature, respectively) was 1.117 (95% CI 0.941-1.325) and 1.740 (95% CI 1.302-2.327), respectively, and that of moderate cold and heat (5st and 95th percentile of temperature, respectively) was 1.029 (95% CI 0.958-1.106) and 1.572 (95% CI 1.210-2.042), respectively; fourth, compared with male and ≥ 65 years groups, the risk for low temperature was greater for female and < 65 years groups, the risk for high temperature was just the opposite; last, about 21.04% of CVD hospital admissions burden were attributed to the ambient temperature, and most of (about 19.26%) were caused by moderate heat. In Tianshui, alongside with extreme temperature, the moderate temperature might be an important risk factor for CVD hospital admissions in suburban farmers.
