Distribution and availability of rare earth elements and trace elements in the estuarine waters of the Ría of Huelva (SW Spain)

Assessment of the effects of dredging on metal levels in port waters using DGT passive samplers and spot sampling

Aiming at assessing the effect of dredging activities on the levels of metals in Bilbao Port (northern Spain), dissolved and labile metal concentrations in the water were concurrently measured, before, during, and after dredging activities by spot sampling and Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGTs) passive samplers, respectively. Most of the dissolved metal results were below the quantification limits (Cd, <0.06-0.26 μg/L; Co, <5 μg/L; Cu, <5-15 μg/L; Fe, <10-48 μg/L; Mn, <10-22 μg/L; Ni, <2.6-7 μg/L; Pb, <0.39-0.8 μg/L; Zn, <9-24 μg/L). In contrast, DGT results for all sampling times and stations were obtained (Cd, 0.02-0.12 μg/L; Co, 0.08-0.15 μg/L; Cu, 0.5-2.8 μg/L; Fe, 1.0-3.6 μg/L; Mn, 4.7-23.5 μg/L; Ni, 0.5-0.9 μg/L; Pb, 0.15-0.28 μg/L; Zn, 2.6-7.2 μg/L), enabling to determine those metals affected by dredging. Only labile-Pb concentration surpassed momentarily the DGT-Environmental Quality Standard, enabling to rule out biological effects on biota. DGTs are a promising technique for facilitating decision-making during dredging operations.

Distribution of rare earth elements and assessment of anthropogenic gadolinium in estuarine habitats: The case of Loire and Seine estuaries in France

Rare earth elements (REEs), attractive to society because of their applications in industry, agriculture and medicine, are increasingly released into the environment especially in industrialized estuaries. This study compared the REE distribution in the abiotic compartments: water (dissolved phase (<0.45 μm), suspended particulate matter (SPM)) and sediment of the Loire and Seine estuaries (France). A total of 8 and 6 sites were investigated in the Loire and Seine, respectively, as well as 5 additional offshore sites for the Loire. Total REE concentrations were higher in the Loire for the dissolved phase (93.5 ± 63.3 vs 87.7 ± 16.2 ng/L), SPM (173.9 ± 18.3 vs 114.0 ± 17.8 mg/kg dw) and sediments (198.2 ± 27.9 vs 73.2 ± 27.4 mg/kg dw), explained by higher geogenic inputs. Individual REE contributions along with normalization highlighted heavy REE enrichments and Gd positive anomalies in the dissolved phase of the two estuaries, whereas REE distributions in SPM and sediments followed the natural abundance of the REE classes. The calculated Gd anomalies in the dissolved phase were higher in the Seine (9.7 ± 3.4) than in the Loire (3.0 ± 0.8), corresponding to 88.3 ± 5.1 % and 64.4 ± 11.1 % of anthropogenic Gd. This demonstrates a higher contamination of the Seine estuary, certainly due to the difference in the number of inhabitants between both areas involving different amounts of Gd used in medicine. The offshore sites of Loire showed lower total REE concentrations (55.8 ± 5.8 ng/L, 26.7 ± 38.2 mg/kg dw and 100.1 ± 11.7 mg/kg dw for the dissolved phase, SPM and sediments, respectively) and lower Gd anomalies (1.2 ± 0.2) corresponding to only 13.3 ± 3.9 % of anthropogenic Gd, confirming a contamination from the watershed. This study comparing two major French estuaries provides new data on the REE distribution in natural aquatic systems.

Trophic transfer of rare earth elements in the food web of the Loire estuary (France)

The increasing use of rare earth elements (REEs) in many industrial sectors and in medecine, causes discharges into the environment and particularly in estuarine areas subjected to strong anthropogenic pressures. Here, we assessed the distribution of REEs along the food web of the Loire estuary. Several species representative of different trophic levels were sampled: 8 vertebrates, 3 crustaceans, 2 mollusks, 3 annelids and 4 algae, as well as Haploops sp. tubes rather related to sediment. The total REE concentrations measured by ICP-MS were the highest in Haploops sp. tubes (141.1 ± 4.7 μg/g dw), algae (1.5 to 34.5 μg/g dw), mollusks (9.9 to 12.0 μg/g dw), annelids (0.7 to 19.9 μg/g dw) and crustaceans (1.4 to 6.3 μg/g dw) and the lowest in vetebrates (0.1 to 1.6 μg/g dw). The individual contribution of REEs was, however, similar between most studied species with a higher contribution of light REEs (76.7 ± 7.6 %) compared to heavy REEs (14.1 ± 3.7 %) or medium REEs (9.2 ± 5.8 %). Trophic relations were estimated by stable isotope analysis of C and N and the linear regression of δ15N with total REE concentrations highlighted a trophic dilution with a corresponding TMS of -2.0. The tissue-specific bioaccumulation investigated for vertebrates demonstrated a slightly higher REE accumulation in gonads than in the muscle. Finally, positive Eu, Gd, Tb and Lu anomalies were highlighted in the normalized REE patterns of most studied species (especially in fish and crustaceans), which is consistent with results in the dissolved phase for Eu and Gd. These anomalies could either be due to anthropogenic inputs or to various bioaccumulation/elimination processes according to the specific species physiology. This study, including most of the trophic levels of the Loire estuary food web provides new insights on the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of REEs in natural ecosystems.

A nationwide investigation on the characteristics and health risk of trace elements in surface water across China

Rapid urbanization accelerates the release of anthropogenic heavy metals from local to wider water systems, posing a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems and public health. The characteristics of trace elements were investigated to evaluate the environmental status of surface water in 40 cities of China. The concentrations of 22 elements in surface water ranged from 7.00 × 10-4 to 4.37 × 105 μg/L. The water quality can be classified as "excellent" except Songhuajiang. The levels of As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Hg are all within the limits permitted by national drinking water quality standards. An obvious regional distribution characteristic was observed, with concentrations of Zn, Mn, Ni, Cu, Co, U, and Cr higher in surface water collected in the north than in the south, while the trends for Cd, Tl, and As are opposite. Notably, Tl shows significant geographical divergences, with the level of surface water collected from the south nine times higher than that from the north. The regional distribution of the mineral, industrial, or agricultural activity might be responsible for the south-to-north difference of these elements. The hazard index (HI) and total cancer risk (TCR) through oral or dermal contact with water-related heavy metals were further calculated. The average HI was 0.54 in the north and 0.29 in the south for adults, while HI for children was relatively higher. The value was 1.01 and 0.55 in the north and south, respectively. TCR in the north is 2.58 × 10-4 and mainly contributed by Cr (88.1 %), while TCR in the south is 4.48 × 10-5 and mainly contributed by As (98.4 %). The research results can provide essential data for effective water resources management and human health protection in China.

Influence of Reagents on Qualitative Indicators of Artificial Anti-Deflationary Phytocenosis on Waste from a Rare Earth Tailing Facility

This paper presents an assessment of the effect of various reagents on the qualitative indicators of anti-deflationary single-species sowing phytocenosis on enrichment waste from rare earth ores. It has been established that tailings of loparite ores are not suitable for biological reclamation due to low values of hygroscopic moisture (0.54-2.85%) and clay particles (17.6 ± 0.6%) and high content of bioavailable forms of aluminum (504 ± 14 mg/kg). Seeds of red fescue (Festuca rubra L.) were grown on the tailings of loparite ore enrichment with the addition of opoka (O), brucite (B), and vermiculite (V). The quality of the seed cenosis was assessed by the dry biomass of the above-ground parts of the plants and the plant height. A positive effect (one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD test (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01)) of the considered combinations of reagents on the growth of above-ground biomass from 31.5% (V) to 70.3 (V + O), 82.4% (V + B), and 81.8% (V + O+B) and on plant height from 53.8% (V) up to 78.6 (V + O), 83.8% (V + B), and 75.4% (V + O+B) was revealed. The use of a combination of V + O and V + B reagents made it possible to significantly reduce the content of Al (by 19.0% and 52.8%), Sr (by 16.5% and 12.9%), La (by 65.2% and 40.6%), and Ce (by 66.8% and 41.9%) in the aerial part of the sowing phytocenosis compared to control. The results obtained here can become the basis for development of a combined sorption technology for the reclamation of technogenically disturbed lands.

Use of carminic acid immobilized in agarose gel as a binding phase for DGT: A new approach for determinations of rare earth elements

Recently, rare-earth elements (REEs) have attracted great interest due to their importance in several fields, such as the high-technology and medicine industries. Due to the recent intensification of the use of REEs in the world and the resulting potential impact on the environment, new analytical approaches for their determination, fractionation and speciation are needed. Diffusive gradients in thin films are a passive technique already used for sampling labile REEs, providing in situ analyte concentration, fractionation and, consequently, remarkable information on REE geochemistry. However, data based on DGT measurements until now have been based exclusively on the use of a single binding phase (Chelex-100, immobilized in APA gel). The present work proposes a new method for the determination of rare earth elements using an inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry technique and a diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique for application in aquatic environments. New binding gels were tested for DGT using carminic acid as the binding agent. It was concluded that acid dispersion directly in agarose gel presented the best performance, offering a simpler, faster, and greener method for measuring labile REEs compared to the existing DGT binding phase. Deployment curves obtained by immersion tests in the laboratory show that 13 REEs had linearity in their retention by the developed binding agent (retention x time), confirming the main premise of the DGT technique obeying the first Fick's diffusion law. For the first time, the diffusion coefficients were obtained in agarose gels (diffusion medium) and carminic acid immobilized in agarose as the binding phase for La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, which were 3.94 × 10^-6, 3.87 × 10^-6, 3.90 × 10^-6, 3.79 × 10^-6, 3.71 × 10^-6, 4.13 × 10^-6, 3.75 × 10^-6, 3.94 × 10^-6, 3.45 × 10^-6, 3.97 × 10^-6, 3.25 × 10^-6, 4.06 × 10^-6, and 3.50 × 10^-6 cm² s^-1, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed DGT devices were tested in solutions with different pH values (3.5, 5.0, 6.5 and 8) and ionic strengths (I = 0.005 mol L^-1, 0.01 mol L^-1, 0.05 mol L^-1 and 0.1 mol L^-1 - NaNO₃). The results of these studies showed an average variation in the analyte retention for all elements at a maximum of approximately 20% in the pH tests. This variation is considerably lower than those previously reported when using Chelex resin as a binding agent, particularly for lower pH values. For the ionic strength, the maximum average variation was approximately 20% for all elements (except for I = 0.005 mol L^-1). These results indicate the possibility of a wide range of the proposed approach to be used for in situ deployment without the use of correction based on apparent diffusion coefficients (as required for using the conventional approach). In laboratory deployments using acid mine drainage water samples (treated and untreated), it was shown that the proposed approach presents excellent accuracy compared with data obtained from Chelex resin as a binding agent.

Consequences of sea level rise for high metal(loid) loads in the Ría of Huelva estuary sediments

Ría of Huelva, located in southwestern Spain, is a highly metal(loid)-contaminated estuary system where sediments are exceeding action limits in an increasing order for Cd, Zn, Pb, Cu, and As. With a predicted sea level rise over the next 50 years, the estuary will be subject to flooding with brackish water or seawater. To evaluate the risk of metal(loid) mobilization under future climate scenarios, different locations along the estuary were sampled at different depths. Samples were flooded with river water, brackish water, and seawater under different short- and long-term laboratory setups. Potential metal(loid) mobilization showed that water quality standards for As, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, and Cd could be exceeded upon seawater flooding. However, metal(loid) mobilization was not predictable solely based on sediment loads. The driving factors for cation and anion mobility were identified to be mainly pH under low salinity and competitive desorption under high salinity conditions. Further drivers such as wave movement or labile C input in C-limited systems were found to enhance metal(loid) mobilization. Long-term flooding of intact sediment cores revealed that sea level rise will have different effects on the estuary system depending on duration of flooding. Short-term flooding in the near future will first affect alkaline sediments and enhance currently low cation mobilization, while anion mobilization due to reductive Fe dissolution will remain high. Once acidic sediments further inland are flooded with seawater, highest contaminant mobilization can be expected as high salinity will further enhance already high cation mobilization under acidic pH. Long-term flooding with seawater will neutralize the sediment pH and limit cation mobilization compared to acidic pH. However, the contaminant load stored in the estuary is so high that, extrapolating data obtained, mobilization could last for >1000 years, e.g. for As, Pb, and Al.

Variation in the concentration of particulate Pd in the Nandu River Estuary during spring-neap tides

Estuaries are environmental systems with great resource potential and environmental benefits. This study investigates the role of particulate palladium (Pd) in the Nandu River Estuary in the enrichment of estuarine geochemical processes during spring-neap tides. Particulate Pd was found to show different characteristics during spring-neap tides, with the hydrodynamic condition being one of the key factors causing the difference. In addition, particulate Pd showed a decreasing trend while moving from the mouth to the upstream. The highest value of particulate Pd was 35.32 ng L^-1, which occurred at the intersection of the mainstream and the branch during the neap tide, and the lowest value was 0.86 ng·L^-1, which occurred in the far mouth area during the spring tide. The concentrations of particulate Pd during the neap and spring tides were 5.53 (1.01-35.32) ng·L^-1 and 2.33 (0.86-5.22) ng·L^-1, respectively. With the exception of stations 1, 5, 10, 11, and 15, the concentration of particulate Pd during the neap tide was greater than that during the spring tide. The variation in the particulate Pd was inconsistent between the spring tide and the neap tide, and the fluctuation in each study section during the neap tide was greater than that during the spring tide. In addition, since the emissions from catalytic converter are in the form of nanoparticles, they are difficult to be dissolve in natural water, and therefore, the concentration of particulate Pd was obviously greater in the waters near large bridges and main roads. An analysis of the physical and chemical properties of the water showed that Cl^- easily combined with dissolved Pd and was one of the important factors that affected the concentration of particulate Pd. In addition, DO and Eh had little effect on the change in the particulate Pd during the tidal cycle, and pH had a significant positive correlation with particulate Pd.

Bioaccumulation of selected trace elements in some aquatic organisms from the proximity of Qeshm Island ecosystems: Human health perspective

In this study selected marine species from north Persian Gulf ecosystems were collected to investigate the concentration of 15 trace elements (Al, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, V, Zn and Hg) in muscle and liver tissues for the purpose of evaluating potential health risks for human consumers. The results indicated that Fe, Zn, Sr, Cu and As are the most abundant TEs in the tissues of the species. The concentration of Cu in P. semisulcatus and As in most investigated species pose the highest risk of exposure. The carcinogenic risk values indicate that As and Ni concentrations in the species are above the acceptable lifetime risk for adults and children in most of the species. The margin of exposure risk approach indicated that the risk of detrimental effects due to dietary Pb intake for age groups is low, except for consumers of T. tonggol.

Thallium distribution in an estuary affected by acid mine drainage (AMD): The Ría de Huelva estuary (SW Spain)

This study investigates the behavior of Tl in the Ría de Huelva (SW Spain), one of the most metal polluted estuaries in the world. Dissolved Tl concentration displayed a general decrease across the estuary during the dry season (DS); from 5.0 to 0.34 μg/L in the Tinto and Odiel estuaries, respectively, to 0.02 μg/L in the channel where the rivers join. A slighter decrease was observed during the wet season (WS) (from 0.72 to 0.14 μg/L to 0.02 μg/L) due to the dilution effect of rainfalls in the watersheds. These values are 3 orders of magnitude higher than those reported in other estuaries worldwide. Different increases in Tl concentrations with salinity were observed in the upper reaches of the Tinto and Odiel estuaries, attributed to desorption processes from particulate matter. Chemical and mineralogical evidences of particulate matter, point at Fe minerals (i.e., jarosite) as main drivers of Tl particulate transport in the estuary. Unlike other estuaries worldwide, where a fast sorption process onto particulate matter commonly takes place, Tl is mainly desorbed from particulate matter in the Tinto and Odiel estuaries. Thus, Tl may be released back from jarositic particulate matter across the salinity gradient due to the increasing proportion of unreactive TlCl⁰ and K⁺ ions, which compete for adsorption sites with Tl⁺ at increasing salinities. A mixing model based on conservative elements revealed a 6-fold increase in Tl concentrations related to desorption processes. However, mining spills like that occurred in May 2017 may contribute to enhance dissolved and particulate Tl concentrations in the estuary as well as to magnify these desorption processes (up to around 1100% of Tl release), highlighting the impact of the mine spill on the remobilization of Tl from the suspended matter to the water column.

Residence in an Area with Environmental Exposure to Heavy Metals and Neurobehavioral Performance in Children 9-11 Years Old: An Explorative Study

We explored the association between residence in an area polluted with metals and neurobehavioral performance in children aged 9 to 11. A cross-sectional study was conducted with thirty boys and thirty girls aged 9 to 11 from public schools in a heavily industrialized area, matched by age (±4 months) and gender with 15 boys and 15 girls from public schools in cities without relevant industrial activity. Neurobehavioral performance was assessed with the Behavioral Assessment and Research System. Linear regression models were used, adjusting for age, sex, social class and multimedia activities to predict each of the neurobehavioral outcome variables. No differences in neurobehavioral performance were found when all children with residence in areas with environmental exposure to metals were classified as exposed and the children from the other provinces as unexposed. However, when we compared children living <1 km from an industrial area with respect to those living more than 1 km away, significant differences were found. Children living <1 km away had lower scores on Finger Tapping (p = 0.03), Symbol-Digit (p = 0.07) and Continuous Performance (p = 0.02) than those living farther away. Our results support the hypothesis that residing close to an area with industrial activity (<1 km) is associated with deficits in neurobehavioral performance among children aged 9 to 11.

Advances in the Fate of Rare Earth Elements, REE, in Transitional Environments: Coasts and Estuaries

The production of rare earth elements, REE, has significantly increased over the past years, in parallel with the latest advances in nanotechnologies and representing a new group of emerging contaminants. They find application in construction, transport, agriculture, electronics, catalysis, and biomedicine. Their extraordinary intrinsic characteristics are fundamental for overcoming current technological challenges. The accumulation of REE is consistent in near-shore waters being affected by runoff, wastewater discharge, and proximity to built-up areas. Bioavailability in water, sediments, and accumulation in marine biota as well their endocrine disruptor effect is mostly unknown. There is a significant gap of knowledge on the ecotoxicological behaviour of REE in marine areas. The existing investigations have been performed inside well-mixed estuarine systems, due to complex hydrodynamics and multiple sediment transport situations. This hampers the definition of regulatory thresholds for REE concentrations and emissions. The review summarizes the existing information on REE geochemistry and physicochemical conditions influencing dissolution, surface complexation reactions, and distribution at the continent–ocean interface, as well as their speciation, bioavailability, and detrimental effects on living organisms. Strategies for reducing REE usage and inputs are also discussed.

Geochemical distribution and speciation of Tl and other trace metals in upper Beijiang River in South China: Approach of in-situ DGT monitoring

Mining activities frequently result in severe contamination of river water. This study aimed to better understand the spatial distribution characteristics of Tl and other metals (e.g., Al, Cd, Co, Mn, Ni, Zn, Pb, V, As, Mo, and Sb), and to assess their risks to human health. Surface water samples were collected from the upper Beijiang River (South China) via grab sampling and the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique. The concentrations of Tl measured by grab sampling and δ-MnO₂-DGT ranged from 0.045 μg L^-1 to 0.231 μg L^-1 and from 0.056 μg L^-1 to 0.131 μg L^-1, respectively. Most of the metals monitored were below the threshold levels allowed by the drinking water standard in China, except for As, Sb, and Mn at specific sampling sites. The concentrations of other metals measured by grab sampling were higher than those measured using the DGT technique because of the differences in speciation during these measurements. The hazard quotient (5.43 × 10^-4-8.0 × 10^-1 for grab sampling and 2.23 × 10^-4-2.8 × 10^-1 for DGT technique) for the monitored trace metals demonstrated minimal health risk to human beings. The pollution status of these toxic metals in the study area was generally acceptable. As was found to be potentially the most harmful metal in the studied area, with hazard quotients at some sampling sites calculated by grab sampling of >1. It has previously been suggested that As is the most important non-carcinogenic contaminant. The combination of grab sampling and the DGT technique provides a comprehensive understanding of trace metals, especially Tl, in terms of potential bioavailability and ecological assessment.

Sources, distribution and effects of rare earth elements in the marine environment: Current knowledge and research gaps

Rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) are critical elements for a wide range of applications and consumer products. Their growing extraction and use can potentially lead to REY and anthropogenic-REY chemical complexes (ACC-REY) being released in the marine environment, causing concern regarding their potential effects on organisms and ecosystems. Here, we critically review the scientific knowledge on REY sources (geogenic and anthropogenic), factors affecting REY distribution and transfer in the marine environment, as well as accumulation in- and effects on marine biota. Further, we aim to draw the attention to research gaps that warrant further scientific attention to assess the potential risk posed by anthropogenic REY release. Geochemical processes affecting REY mobilisation from natural sources and factors affecting their distribution and transfer across marine compartments are well established, featuring a high variability dependent on local conditions. There is, however, a research gap with respect to evaluating the environmental distribution and fate of REY from anthropogenic sources, particularly regarding ACC-REY, which can have a high persistence in seawater. In addition, data on organismal uptake, accumulation, organ distribution and effects are scarce and at best fragmentary. Particularly, the effects of ACC-REY at organismal and community levels are, so far, not sufficiently studied. To assess the potential risks caused by anthropogenic REY release there is an urgent need to i) harmonise data reporting to promote comparability across studies and environmental matrices, ii) conduct research on transport, fate and behaviour of ACC-REY vs geogenic REY iii) deepen the knowledge on bioavailability, accumulation and effects of ACC-REY and REY mixtures at organismal and community level, which is essential for risk assessment of anthropogenic REY in marine ecosystems.

Differential tissue accumulation in the invasive Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, under two environmentally relevant lanthanum concentrations

Among the environmental emerging concern rare earth elements, lanthanum (La) is one of the most common and reactive. Lanthanum is widely used in numerous modern technologies and applications, and its intense usage results in increasing discharges into the environment, with potentially deleterious consequences to earthlings. Therefore, we exposed the important food resource and powerful monitoring tool Manila clam to two environmentally relevant concentrations of La (0.3 µg L^-1 and 0.9 µg L^-1) for 6 days, through water, to assess the bioaccumulation pattern in the gills, digestive gland, and remaining body. The La bioaccumulation was measured after 1 (T1), 2 (T2), and 6 (T6) days of exposure. Lanthanum was bioaccumulated after 2 days, and the levels increased in all tissues in a dose-dependent manner. When exposed to 0.3 µg L^-1, the enrichment factor pattern was gills > body > digestive gland. However, when exposed to 0.9 µg L^-1, the pattern appears to change to gills > digestive gland > body. Tissue portioning appears to be linked with exposed concentration: In higher exposure levels, digestive gland seems to gain importance, probably associated with detoxification mechanisms. Here, we describe for the first time La bioaccumulation in these different tissues in a bivalve species. Future studies dealing with the bioaccumulation and availability of La should connect them with additional water parameters (such as temperature, pH, and major cations).

Enrichment and Fractionation of Rare Earth Elements in an Estuarine Marsh Soil Receiving Acid Discharges from Legacy Sulfide Mine Wastes

This paper provides new insights into the geochemical cycling of rare earth elements (REEs) in acid sulfate soils developed on salt marsh sediments of the Huelva estuary (Spain) as a result of sulfide mineral oxidation in abandoned ore stockpiles. The study was aimed at determining the REE abundance, fractionation pattern and mineralogical control of the dispersal and retention of REEs in the soil system. Forty-one samples were collected at 13 core sampling sites along two transects extending across the degraded marshland, and they were subjected to XRD, ESEM-EDS and ICP-MS analyses. Measurements revealed that the soil receiving acid discharges has relatively high concentrations of ΣREEs (174.77 ± 19.77 mg kg−1) compared to local baseline concentrations. Shale-normalized REE patterns are generally flat, but a slight middle REE (MREE) enrichment is consistently apparent in all soil samples, involving relatively low LaN/GdN ratios (0.83 ± 0.08) and GdN/LuN ratios up to 1.42. The convex-upward REE pattern supports the possibility that iron oxy-hydroxide minerals play an important role in MREE retention through adsorption and co-precipitation mechanisms. Efflorescent sulfate salts left on the topsoil by the evaporation of acid waters show a strong depletion of light REEs (LaN/GdN = 0.16 ± 0.10) and act as a temporary reservoir of labile MREEs and heavy REEs during dry periods.

Distribution of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh) in urban tributaries of the Scheldt River assessed by diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT)

The performance of the newly developed DGT technique for the platinum group elements (PGEs) rhodium (Rh), platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) was evaluated in two tributaries of the Scheldt River, the Marque River close to the city of Lille (France), and the Zenne River which flows through the city of Brussels (Belgium). In the Marque River, an interlaboratory comparison was performed between the two laboratories where the DGT techniques dedicated to PGEs were developed (AMGC, VUB & LASIRE, U-Lille). PGEs were also analysed in an effluent of a Brussels hospital and monthly grab sampling was performed at the wastewater treatments plants (WWTPs) of Brussels. The concentrations of the 3 elements are higher in the Zenne River than in the Marque River and much higher Pt concentrations are found in the hospital effluent. Good agreement for Pt was observed between the three selected chelating resins and a relatively good agreement was observed between the two laboratories using the same chelating resin, whereas lower results were observed with the anion-exchange resin. Larger discrepancies between the two laboratories were observed for Pd and no comparison could be made for Rh due to the low natural concentrations. The results show that in small urban rivers with high impact of urbanization, WWTPs are an important source of Pt, resulting from the use of anticancer drugs in hospitals and households. The limited retention of PGEs in WWTPs results in increased concentrations in urban rivers downstream. For Pd and Rh, similar trends were found with other traffic related elements such as Cu, Zn and Pb, showing the highest concentrations in waters collecting runoff from a highway. The data show that these elements, together with Gd, can be useful to trace specific pollution sources and their dispersion.

Assessing variability in the ratio of metal concentrations measured by DGT-type passive samplers and spot sampling in European seawaters

The current study evaluates the effect of seawater physico-chemical characteristics on the relationship between the concentration of metals measured by Diffusive Gradients in Thin films (DGT) passive samplers (i.e., DGT-labile concentration) and the concentrations measured in discrete water samples. Accordingly, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure the total dissolved metal concentrations in the discrete water samples and the labile metal concentrations obtained by DGT samplers; additionally, lead and cadmium conditional labile fractions were determined by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV) and total dissolved nickel was measured by Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (CSV). It can be concluded that, in general, the median ratios of DGT/ICP and DGT/ASV(CSV) were lower than 1, except for Ni (median ratio close to 1) and Zn (higher than 1). This indicates the importance of speciation and time-integrated concentrations measured using passive sampling techniques, which is in line with the WFD suggestions for improving the chemical assessment of waterbodies. It is the variability in metal content in waters rather than environmental conditions to which the variability of the ratios can be attributed. The ratios were not significantly affected by the temperature, salinity, pH, oxygen, DOC or SPM, giving a great confidence for all the techniques used. Within a regulatory context such as the EU Water Framework Directive this is a great advantage, since the simplicity of not needing to use corrections to minimize the effects of environmental variables could help in implementing DGTs within monitoring networks.
