Light absorption and fluorescence characteristics of water-soluble organic compounds in carbonaceous particles at a typical remote site in the southeastern Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau

Stable Carbon Isotope Signatures of Carbonaceous Aerosol Endmembers in the Tibetan Plateau

Carbonaceous aerosols play an important role in radiative forcing in the remote and climate-sensitive Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, the sources of carbonaceous aerosols to the TP remain poorly defined, in part due to the lack of regionally relevant data about the sources of carbonaceous aerosols. To address this knowledge gap, we present the first comprehensive analysis of the δ13C signatures of carbonaceous aerosol endmembers local to the TP, encompassing total carbon, water-insoluble particle carbon, and elemental carbon originating from fossil fuel combustion, biomass combustion, and topsoil. The δ13C signatures of these local carbonaceous endmembers differ from components collected in other regions of the world. For instance, fossil fuel-derived aerosols from the TP were 13C-depleted relative to fossil fuel-derived aerosols reported in other regions, while biomass fuel-derived aerosols from the TP were 13C-enriched relative to biomass fuel-derived aerosols reported in other regions. The δ13C values of fine-particle topsoil in the TP were related to regional variations in vegetation type. These findings enhance our understanding of the unique features of carbonaceous aerosols in the TP and aid in accurate source apportionment and environmental assessments of carbonaceous aerosols in this climate-sensitive region.

Weak transport of atmospheric water-insoluble particulate carbon from South Asia to the inner Tibetan Plateau in the monsoon season

Carbonaceous particles play a crucial role in atmospheric radiative forcing. However, our understanding of the behavior and sources of carbonaceous particles in remote regions remains limited. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is a typical remote region that receives long-range transport of carbonaceous particles from severely polluted areas such as South Asia. Based on carbon isotopic compositions (Δ14C/δ13C) of water-insoluble particulate carbon (IPC) in total suspended particle (TSP), PM2.5, and precipitation samples collected during 2020-22 at the Nam Co Station, a remote site in the inner TP, the following results were achieved: First, fossil fuel contributions (ffossil) to IPC in TSP samples (28.60 ± 9.52 %) were higher than that of precipitation samples (23.11 ± 8.60 %), and it is estimated that the scavenging ratio of IPC from non-fossil fuel sources was around 2 times that from fossil fuel combustion during the monsoon season. The ffossil of IPC in both TSP and PM2.5 samples peaked during the monsoon season. Because heavy precipitation during the monsoon season scavenges large amounts of long-range transported carbonaceous particles, the contribution of local emissions from the TP largely outweighs that from South Asia during this season. The results of the IPC source apportionment based on Δ14C and δ13C in PM2.5 samples showed that the highest contribution of liquid fossil fuel combustion also occurred in the monsoon season, reflecting increased human activities (e.g., tourism) on the TP during this period. The results of this study highlight the longer lifetime of fossil fuel-sourced IPC in the atmosphere than that of non-fossil fuel sources in the inner TP and the importance of local emissions from the TP during the monsoon season. The findings provide new knowledge for model improvement and mitigation of carbonaceous particles.

Molecular signatures and formation mechanisms of water-soluble chromophores in particulate matter from Karachi in Pakistan

Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy is a widely-used method for characterizing the chemical components of brown carbon (BrC). However, the molecular basics and formation mechanisms of chromophores, which are decomposed by parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis, are not yet fully understood. In this study, we characterized the water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in aerosols collected from Karachi, Pakistan, using EEM spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). We identified three PARAFAC components, including two humic-like components (C1 and C2) and one phenolic-like species (C3). We determined the molecular families associated with each component by performing Spearman correlation analysis between FT-ICR MS peaks and PARAFAC component intensities. We found that the C1 and C2 components were associated with nitrogen-enriched compounds, where C2 with the longest emission wavelength exhibited a higher level of aromaticity, N content, and oxygenation than C1. The C3 associated formulas have fewer nitrogen-containing species, a lower unsaturation degree, and a lower oxidation state. An oxidation pathway was identified as an important process in the formation of C1 and C2 components at the molecular level, particularly for the assigned CHON compounds associated with the gas-phase oxidation process, despite their diverse precursor types. Numerous C2 formulas were found in the "potential BrC" region and overlapped with the BrC-associated formulas. It can be inferred that the compounds that fluoresce C2 contributed considerably to the light absorption of BrC. These findings are essential for future studies utilizing the EEM-PARAFAC method to explore the sources, processes, and compositions of atmospheric BrC.

Research progress on the characteristics, sources, and environmental and potential health effects of water-soluble organic compounds in atmospheric particulate matter

Water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) have received extensive attention due to their indistinct chemical components, complex sources, negative environmental impact, and potential health effects. To the best of our knowledge, until now, there has been no comprehensive review focused on the research progress of WSOCs. This paper reviewed the studies on chemical constituent and characterization, distribution condition, sources, environmental impact, as well as the potential health effects of WSOCs in the past 13 years. Moreover, the main existing challenges and directions for the future research on WSOCs were discussed from several aspects. Because of the complex composition of WSOCs and many unknown individual components that have not been detected, there is still a need for the identification and quantification of WSOCs. As modern people spend more time in indoor environments, it is meaningful to fill the gaps in the component characteristics and sources of indoor WSOCs. In addition, although in vitro cell experiments have shown that WSOCs could induce cellular oxidative stress and trigger the inflammatory response, the corresponding mechanisms of action need to be further explored. The current population epidemiology research of WSOCs is missing. Prospectively, we propose to conduct a comprehensive and simultaneous analysis strategy for concentration screening, source apportionment, potential health effects, and action mechanisms of WSOCs based on high throughput omics coupled with machine learning simulation and prediction.

Insights into dissolved organics in non-urban areas - Optical properties and sources

Brown carbon aerosols show obvious light absorption properties in the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) range, which has an important impact on photochemistry and climate. In this study, experimental samples originated from the North slope of the Qinling Mountains (at two remote suburb sites) to study the optical properties of water-soluble brown carbon (WS-BrC) in PM_2.5. The WS-BrC of TY (a sampling site on the edge of Tangyu of Mei county) has a stronger light absorption ability than CH (a rural sampling site, near the Cuihua Mountains scenic spot). The direct radiation effect of WS-BrC relative to elemental carbon (EC) is 6.67 ± 1.36% in TY and 24.13 ± 10.84% in CH in the UV range, respectively. In addition, two humic-like and one protein-like fluorophore components in WS-BrC were identified by fluorescence spectrum and parallel factor (EEMs-PARAFAC). Humification index (HIX), biological index (BIX) and fluorescence index (FI) together showed that the WS-BrC in the two sites may originate from fresh aerosol emissions. Potential source analysis of Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model show that the combustion process, vehicle, secondary formation and road dust are the main contributors to WS-BrC.

Biogenic Synthesis of Fluorescent Carbon Dots (CDs) and Their Application in Bioimaging of Agricultural Crops

Fluorescent nanoparticles have a transformative potential for advanced sensors and devices for point-of-need diagnostics and bioimaging, bypassing the technical burden of meeting the assay performance requirements. Carbon dots (CDs) are rapidly emerging carbon-based nanomaterials. Regardless of their fate, they will find increasing applications. In this study, a simple approach for synthesizing CDs from fruit peels was developed. The CDs were fabricated from Annona squamosa (L.) peels using a carbonization technique through microwave-assisted hydrothermal digestion at temperatures around 200 °C. Synthesized CDs were detected using a UV transilluminator for the preliminary confirmation of the presence of fluorescence. UV-Vis spectrophotometry (absorbance at 505 nm) analysis, zeta potential measurement (-20.8 mV), nanoparticles tracking analysis (NTA) (average size: 15.4 nm and mode size: 9.26 nm), photoluminescence, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis were used to identify the capping functional groups on the CDs. The total quantum yield exhibited was 8.93%, and the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) showed the size range up to 40 nm. The germinating mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.)) seeds were incubated with biogenically synthesized CDs to check the absorption of CDs by them. The fluorescence was observed under a UV-transilluminator in the growing parts of seeds, indicating the absorption of CDs during the germination, development, and growth. These fluorescent CDs could be used as a bioimaging agent. This novel method of synthesizing CDs was found to be eco-friendly, rapid, and cost-effective.

Composition and sources of heavy metals in aerosol at a remote site of Southeast Tibetan Plateau, China

Knowledge of the elemental composition of aerosols at remote sites is important for evaluating the influence of anthropogenic activities. In this study, the elemental composition and sources of total suspended particles (TSP) at Yaze, a remote site in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP), were investigated. The results showed that the mean elemental concentrations at Yaze were relatively low compared with those in other areas of the TP. Seasonal variations in the studied elements was characterized by low and high concentrations during the monsoon and non-monsoon periods, respectively. The enrichment factors (EFs) for some heavy metals at Yaze were slightly higher than those at Nam Co station (inland TP) but much lower than those at Mt. Yulong (southeastern TP) and in the Indian megacity of Delhi, indicating fewer anthropogenic influences at the study site relative to sites close to severely polluted regions. For the studied elements, three major sources were identified: crustal origins (e.g., Al and Fe), anthropogenic origins (e.g., Zn and Cd) and mixed origins (e.g., As and Bi). Further analysis by potential source contribution functions showed that the local TP was the primary source for elements of crustal origins. Correspondingly, the typical heavy metals were mainly attributed to pollution emitted from anthropogenic activities and transported over long-range from both South and Southeast Asia. This work demonstrates the transport of heavy metals from external sources to remote sites in the southeastern TP. These results are also useful for interpreting the historical profiles of heavy metals in the ice cores of the TP.

Fluorescence fingerprinting characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon from size-resolved particles during pollution event

A typical haze pollution process in northern China has necessitated this study which focuses on the fluorescence characteristics of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in size-resolved particles. High concentrations of WSOC were found in both fine (38 μg/m³) and coarse particles (36 μg/m³) during the pollution period, which may be related to the secondary formation of organic aerosols and stable meteorological conditions. Five fluorescent components in WSOC were extracted by parallel factor analysis. Our results showed that the fluorophores in fine and coarse particles were mainly humic-like substances (humic-like, terrestrial humic-like, and high oxidation humic-like substances) and protein-like substances (protein-like and tyrosine-like substances), respectively. Moreover, the aging degree analysis, pollution source tracing, and concentration prediction of WSOC were carried out by fluorescence index. An innovative technique called self-organizing map was proposed for an in-depth investigation of the contamination mechanism of the atmospheric organic aerosol. Furthermore, the difference in the fluorescence characteristics of WSOC in fine particles was higher than that in coarse particles. The atmospheric pollution process increased the degree of difference in fluorescence characteristics. Additionally, an effective method for predicting the size of atmospheric particles was established by combining excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy with classification and regression tree analysis.

An overestimation of light absorption of brown carbon in ambient particles caused by using filters with large pore size

As an important component of carbonaceous particles, organic carbon (OC) plays a significant role in radiative forcing in the atmosphere. Recently, the warming effect of light-absorbing OC has been emphasized. Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) is commonly used as a surrogate to investigate the light absorption of OC. Thus far, filters with 0.45 μm (PS1) and 0.20 μm pore sizes (PS2) are both used to investigate the light absorption of WSOC, which may cause large divergent results. In this study, we found that the light absorption ability of WSOC treated with PS1 was higher than that of PS2 due to the extinction of suspended particles (e.g., black carbon) with particle size between 0.20 μm and 0.45 μm, although the concentrations of WSOC treated with PS1 and PS2 were very close. This phenomenon was more remarkable at visible wavelengths, resulting in an overestimation of the warming effect of WSOC by 9%-22% for aerosol samples treated by PS1, with the highest values occurring in samples heavily influenced by fossil fuel burning emissions. An overestimation of WSOC light absorption treated by PS1 occurred in the investigated ambient aerosol samples from three sites, so it may be a general phenomenon that also exists in other regions of the world. Therefore, to achieve the actual solar radiative forcing of OC in the atmosphere, it is recommended to use PS2 in the future, and reported data of WSOC treated by PS1 should be re-evaluated.

Light-absorption and fluorescence fingerprinting characteristics of water and methanol soluble organic compounds in PM2.5 in cold regions of Northeast China

High-performance liquid chromatography-size exclusion chromatography and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy were used to analyze the seasonal variations and potential sources of molecular weight (MW) separated light-absorbing chromophores and fluorophores of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) and methanol-soluble organic compounds (MSOC) in PM_2.5 in cold areas of northern China. The results showed that the light-absorbing organics in MSOC had larger weight-average MW (M_w) (3.19 kDa) and number-average MW (M_n) (1.13 kDa) compared with WSOC (M_w: 1.41 kDa, M_n: 0.692 kDa). The light-absorption of organics showed a trend of winter>spring>autumn>summer and increased on air pollution days. Three fluorescent components including humic-like, protein-like, and terrestrial humic-like components in WSOC were extracted by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Fluorophores in WSOC were dominated by humic-like and terrestrial humic-like components (67.7%). Three fluorescent components extracted from MSOC were low oxidation humic-like, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-like, and protein-like components respectively. It is worth noting that compared with WSOC, MSOC may have a higher human health risk due to the presence of PAH-like components. The combination of PARAFAC and self-organizing map had the potential to identify potential sources of fluorophores. It provided a new perspective for comprehensively exploring the characteristics of fluorophores in aerosols. This study provided a reference for further understanding the chemical composition and optical properties of organic aerosols in the cold regions of northern China.

Overestimation of anthropogenic contribution of heavy metals in precipitation than those of aerosol samples due to different treatment methods

Due to increased anthropogenic activities in recent decades, many heavy metal elements have been emitted into the atmosphere and transported to remote regions. The Enrichment factors (EFs) is a normally used method for evaluating the source of heavy metal elements. However, because of some flaws of this method (e.g., higher solubility of heavy metals elements than reference elements in dilute acid), the anthropogenic contributions of some heavy metal elements in the precipitation sample were overestimated. To address this issue, EFs of heavy metal elements of aerosol, precipitation and snowpit samples in a typical remote area of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) were compared. The results showed that the EF values of many heavy metal elements in precipitation and snowpit samples were close to that of aerosol samples treated with dilute acid but usually much higher than those of totally dissolved aerosol samples. Moreover, EF values of most heavy metal elements in the ice core at the margin of the TP were higher than those at central TP, indicating that signal of long-range transport anthropogenic emitted heavy metal elements is weak and may be covered by natural mineral dust sources at glacier region. Therefore, the threshold EF values for determining anthropogenic sources of heavy metal elements in precipitation and ice core samples should be higher than those of aerosols. This study provides new knowledge on investigating anthropogenic sources of heavy metals in precipitation samples at both the TP and other regions of the world.

Multidimensional Analytical Characterization of Water-Soluble Organic Aerosols: Challenges and New Perspectives

Water-soluble organic aerosols (OA) are an important component of air particles and one of the key drivers that impact both climate and human health. Understanding the processes involving water-soluble OA depends on how well the chemical composition of this aerosol component is decoded. Yet, obtaining detailed information faces several challenges, including water-soluble OA collection, extraction, and chemical complexity. This review highlights the multidimensional non-targeted analytical strategies that have been developed and employed for providing new insights into the structural and molecular features of water-soluble organic components present in air particles. First, the most prominent high-resolution mass spectrometric methods for near real-time measurements of water-soluble OA and their limitations are discussed. Afterward, a special emphasis is given to the degree of compositional information provided by offline multidimensional analytical techniques, namely excitation–emission (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and their hyphenation with chromatographic systems. The major challenges ahead on the application of these multidimensional analytical strategies for OA research are also addressed so that they can be used advantageously in future studies.
