The effect of heavy precipitation on the leaching of heavy metals from tropical coastal legacy tailings

The continued growth in demand for mineral resources has led to a large amount of mining wastes, which is a major challenge in the context of carbon neutrality and climate change. In this study, runoff migration, batch leaching, and column experiments were used to investigate the short-, medium-, and long-term leaching of heavy metals from legacy tailings, respectively; the cumulative metal release kinetic equations were established, and the long-term effects of tailings leaching were verified by HYDRUS-1D. In runoff migration experiments, surface dissolution of tailings and the co-migration of adsorbed soil particles by erosion were the main carriers in the early stages of leachate formation (Mn ∼ 65 mg/L and SO42- up to 2697.2 mg/L). Batch leaching tests showed that the concentration of heavy metals in soil leached by acid rain were 0.1 ∼ 22.0 μg/L for Cr, 0.7 ∼ 26.0 μg/L for Cu, 4.8 ∼ 5646.0 μg/L for Mn, 0.3 ∼ 232.4 μg/L for Ni, and 1.3 ∼ 448.0 μg/L for Zn. The results of column experiments indicated that some soluble components and metals with high mobility showed a significant decreasing trend at cumulative L/S ≤ 2. Additionally, the metals have higher leaching rates under TCLP conditions, as shown by Mn > Co > Zn > Cd > Ni > Cu > Pb > Cr. The fitting results of Langmuir equation were closer to the cumulative release of metals in the real case, and the release amounts of Mn, Zn, Co, and Ni were higher with 55, 5.84, 2.66, and 2.51 mg/kg, respectively. The water flow within tailings affects the spatial distribution of metals, which mainly exist in relatively stable chemical fractions (F3 + F4 + F5 > 90 %) after leaching. Numerical simulation verified that Mn in leachate has reached 8 mg/L at a scale of up to 100 years. The research results are expected to provide technical basis for realizing the resource utilization of tailings in the future.

Distribution, traceability, and risk assessment of organophosphate flame retardants in agricultural soils along the Yangtze River Delta in China

Severe pollution threatens the ecosystem and human health in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in China because of the rapid development of industry in this area. This study examines the types, distribution, concentration, and origin of fourteen typical organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in agricultural soils within the YRD region to offer insights for pollutant control and policy-making. The total concentration of OPFRs (ΣOPFRs) varied between 79.19 and 699.58 μg/kg dry weight (dw), averaging at 209.61 μg/kg dw. Among the OPFRs detected, tributoxyethyl phosphate (TBEP) was identified as the main congener, followed by tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), and trimethyl phosphate (TMP). Source analysis, conducted through correlation coefficients and PCA, indicated that OPFRs in agricultural soils within the YRD region mainly originate from emissions related to plastic products and transportation. The health risk exposure to ΣOPFRs in agricultural soil was considered negligible for farmers, with values below 1.24 × 10-2 and 1.76 × 10-9 for noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, respectively. However, the ecological risk of ΣOPFRs in all the samples ranged from 0.08-1.08, indicating a medium to high risk level. The results offer a comprehensive understanding of OPFR pollution in agricultural soils in the YRD region and can be useful for pollution control that mitigates ecological and health risks in this region.

Effects of terrestrial input on heavy metals in Zhanjiang Bay, a typical subtropical bay in the South China Sea

Understanding the influence of terrestrial inputs on heavy metals in bays is crucial for the environmental protection of regional estuaries and coastal systems. In this study, the concentrations, temporal and regional distribution characteristics, and fluxes of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb) in the surface seawater and terrestrial sewage of Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB) in four different seasons were investigated. The results identified the heavy metal concentrations in the sewage outlet around ZJB had significant seasonal variation. The heavy metals in the surface seawater of ZJB had significant spatiotemporal variations. Terrestrial input, biological activity and hydrodynamics affected the overall distribution. The heavy metal emission fluxes indicated that riverine input was the main influencing factor for heavy metals in ZJB (96.22 %). The fluxes of heavy metals into ZJB increased significantly after the typhoon (Cu: 127 %, Zn: 63 %, Pb: 136 %), it was possible to deteriorate the seawater quality.

Heavy Metal Pollution From a Major Earthquake and Tsunami in Chile Is Associated With Geographic Divergence of Clinical Isolates of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Latin America

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a priority pathogen listed by the World Health Organization. The global spread of MRSA is characterized by successive waves of epidemic clones that predominate in specific geographical regions. The acquisition of genes encoding resistance to heavy-metals is thought to be a key feature in the divergence and geographical spread of MRSA. Increasing evidence suggests that extreme natural events, such as earthquakes and tsunamis, could release heavy-metals into the environment. However, the impact of environmental exposition to heavy-metals on the divergence and spread of MRSA clones has been insufficiently explored. We assess the association between a major earthquake and tsunami in an industrialized port in southern Chile and MRSA clone divergence in Latin America. We performed a phylogenomic reconstruction of 113 MRSA clinical isolates from seven Latin American healthcare centers, including 25 isolates collected in a geographic area affected by an earthquake and tsunami that led to high levels of heavy-metal environmental contamination. We found a divergence event strongly associated with the presence of a plasmid harboring heavy-metal resistance genes in the isolates obtained in the area where the earthquake and tsunami occurred. Moreover, clinical isolates carrying this plasmid showed increased tolerance to mercury, arsenic, and cadmium. We also observed a physiological burden in the plasmid-carrying isolates in absence of heavy-metals. Our results are the first evidence that suggests that heavy-metal contamination, in the aftermath of an environmental disaster, appears to be a key evolutionary event for the spread and dissemination of MRSA in Latin America.

Metal distribution behavior based on soil aggregate size in a post-restoration coastal mining area

Soil aggregate size plays an important role in controlling the distribution and transport of metals. Metals immobilized in soil particles will pose potential risks through production/sink flow and infiltration. This study explored the distribution behavior of metals based on soil aggregate size in a restored coastal mining area by establishing Structural Equation Model (SEM) and column experiments. The results showed that hydrological factors and a high degree of weathering accelerated the dissolution of metals from the mine, the desorption of Wa-NH₄⁺-N, the release of F^-, and the leaching of NO₃^-. Driven by soil properties, natural factors, and anthropogenic activities, the total metal content (Total_metal) of Cr, Ni, Zn, Mn, and As showed significant spatial heterogeneity compared to Cd, Co, Cu, and Pb. The geochemical fraction of metals (Geo_metal) indicated that Cd, Co, Pb, Zn, As, and Cu are mainly present in iron‑manganese oxidation bound, organically bound, and residual fractions. The results of SEM showed that the physicochemical properties, Wa-NH₄⁺-N, nitrate nitrogen, and inorganic anions of the soil could explain 69.1 %, 76.4 %, 97.1 %, and 80.0 % of the variation in K_d-Mn, K_d-Pb, K_d-Ni, and K_d-Zn, respectively. While K_d-Cd, K_d-Cu, and K_d-Cr could be predicted by the Total_metal, but the Geo_metal seemed to have little influence on metal K_d. The results of column experiments showed that macroaggregates (>0.25 mm) significantly affected the distribution of Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the topsoil. The severe disruption of soil aggregate structure resulted in small fluctuations of anthropogenic Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn, and As in different layers of deep soil. In addition, mineral composition in >0.15 mm particle size was more likely to change. Overall, the hydrological cycle of coastal mines increases the uncertainty of their response to risk. Our study provides a basis for future strategies for priority control and risk prevention.

Pollution Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Soils over the Past Five Years in Zhejiang, Southeast China

Heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this study, 1999 agricultural soil samples were collected from 11 cities in Zhejiang Province from 2016 to 2020, and the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of 3 of the most important heavy metals, i.e., lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) were analyzed. The results showed that Cd had a slightly higher sample over-standard rate of 12.06%. Spatial distribution and temporal trends showed that the Pb concentrations overall increased from 2016 to 2020 and mainly accumulated in southern Zhejiang. In addition, multiple exposure routes were evaluated for human health risks. Children are more susceptible to the adverse effects of heavy metals in agricultural soils, and oral ingestion was the major exposure route. Cr poses higher human health risks to humans than Pb and Cd in agricultural soils. Therefore, more rigid environmental monitoring and related soil remediation counter-measures for some sites with high concentrations of heavy metals are necessary to limit the potential threat to human health.

Quantitative Assessment and Spatial Analysis of Metals and Metalloids in Soil Using the Geo-Accumulation Index in the Capital Town of Romblon Province, Philippines

The municipality of Romblon in the Philippines is an island known for its marble industry. The subsurface of the Philippines is known for its limestone. The production of marble into slab, tiles, and novelty items requires heavy equipment to cut rocks and boulders. The finishing of marble requires polishing to smoothen the surface. During the manufacturing process, massive amounts of particulates and slurry are produced, and with a lack of technology and human expertise, the environment can be adversely affected. Hence, this study assessed and monitored the environmental conditions in the municipality of Romblon, particularly the soils and sediments, which were affected due to uncontrolled discharges and particulates deposition. A total of fifty-six soil and twenty-three sediment samples were collected and used to estimate the metal and metalloid (MM) concentrations in the whole area using a neural network-particle swarm optimization inverse distance weighting model (NN-PSO). There were nine MMs; e.g., As, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu, Ba, Mn, Zn and Fe, with significant concentrations detected in the area in both soils and sediments. The geo-accumulation index was computed to assess the level of contamination in the area, and only the soil exhibited contamination with zinc, while others were still on a safe level. Nemerow's pollution index (NPI) was calculated for the samples collected, and soil was evaluated and seen to have a light pollution level, while sediment was considered as "clean". Furthermore, the single ecological risk (Er) index for both soil and sediment samples was considered to be a low pollution risk because all values of Er were less than 40.

Source, Distribution, and Risk Estimation of Hazardous Elements in Farmland Soils in a Typical Alluvial-Lacustrine Transition Basin, Hunan Province

Increased concentrations of heavy metals in soil due to anthropogenic activities pose a considerable threat to human health and require constant attention. This study investigates the spatial distribution of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn, Sb) and metalloids (As) in a typical alluvial-lacustrine transition basin and calculates the bioavailable forms of elements posing a direct threat. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to identify the sources of contaminants, after which an ecological risk assessment was conducted. Total (T) As, Pb, and Zn decreased with the depth, whereas Cd and Sb increased in surface (0-20 cm) soil. Bioavailable (Bio) Cd and Pb in the topsoil were regulated by pH and organic matter, whereas Bio-Zn was regulated by soil pH. Within deeper soil layers, the combined effects of pH, organic matter, and clay contents regulated the bio-elements. The results of multiple methods and local investigation showed that TSb (65.3%) was mainly derived from mining activities, TCd (53.2%) and TZn (53.7%) were derived from direct pollution by industrial production and agricultural fertilizers, respectively, and TA (55.6%) was mainly derived from the soil parent material. TPb was related to vehicle exhaust emissions and atmospheric deposition from industrial activities. Although the potential ecological risk in the study area remains relatively low, there is a need for continuous monitoring of the potential ecological risks of Cd and Sb. This study can act as a reference for the prevention and mitigation of heavy metal contamination of alluvial-lacustrine transition basins.

Probabilistic risk assessment of heavy metals in urban farmland soils of a typical oasis city in northwest China

Previous studies lacked quantitative evaluation studies of the probability of ecology and human health risks from soil heavy metals. This study assessed heavy metal risk level by collecting topsoil samples from a typical oasis city (Wuwei) in northwest China and then quantitatively evaluating the ecological risk from heavy metals by incorporating the uncertainty of health risk model parameters into the risk assessment. This study found that anthropogenic activities have influenced the accumulation of heavy metals in the study area and that the risk of contamination of soil heavy metals was characterized as light to moderate contamination and low ecological risk. On this basis, the species sensitivity distribution curves of heavy metals were constructed using species acute toxicity data, the predicted no effect concentrations of heavy metals were derived, and a probabilistic ecological risk evaluation was conducted. The results show that the current soil environmental quality standards in China are not effective in protecting species diversity. In addition, the probability of ecological risk for Cr, Ni and As in the study area was 63.3%, 23.8% and 7.1%, however, traditional pollution assessment methods underestimate the hazard of Cr. Monte Carlo simulations have shown that the probability of the carcinogenic risk of Cr (adults: 79.4%; children: 94.5%) and As (adults: 78.9%; children: 94.0%) is high, the probability of the total carcinogenic risk exceeding 1E-06 is 99.0%, the probability of the non-carcinogenic risk is low, and the slope factor and reference dose can significantly affect the evaluation of human health risks.

Characteristics and Assessment of Soil Heavy Metals Pollution in the Xiaohe River Irrigation Area of the Loess Plateau, China

Heavy metals in soil are a potential threat to ecosystems and human well−being. Understanding the characteristics of soil heavy metal pollution and the prediction of ecological risk are crucial for regional eco−environment and agricultural development, especially for irrigation areas. In this study, the Xiaohe River Irrigation Area in the Loess Plateau was taken as the study area, and the concentration, as well as their accumulation degree and ecological risk and distribution of soil heavy metals, were explored based on the geo−accumulation index (Igeo) and Hakanson potential ecological risk index methods. The results showed that the concentrations of soil heavy metals were all lower than the second grade Environmental Quality Standard for Soils of China. However, the average concentrations of Cu, Hg, Cd, Pb, Zn, Ni and As were higher than the above−mentioned standard. Compared with the soil background values of Shanxi Province, eight heavy metals of all samples presented different accumulation degrees, with the highest accumulation degree in Hg, followed by Cd, and the values were 11.3 and 4.0 times more than the background value, respectively. Spatially, the distribution of soil heavy metals in the Xiaohe River irrigation area was quite different, generating diverse pollution patterns with significant regional differences and complex transportation routes. The content of soil heavy metals in the Xiaohe River irrigation area was highly affected by land use types. The pollution degree varied with the distance to an urban area, declining from the urban area to suburban farmland, and the outer suburban farmland. Among these heavy metals, Hg and Cd were the principal contamination elements, and transportation, service industry and agricultural activities were the main potential contamination sources. The potential ecological risk of soil heavy metal positioned as follows: Hg > Cd > Pb > Zn > Cu > As > Ni > Cr. As indicated by the Hakanson potential ecological risk index strategies, except for the Wangwu examining site, the other six sampling sites experienced extremely strong risks, and as a whole, the entire study region was in a condition of incredibly impressive perils. Consequently, these results suggest that improving soil environmental investigation and assessment, setting up soil heavy metal contamination prevention and control innovation framework and reinforcing contamination source control are effective approaches for soil heavy metal contamination anticipation and control in irrigated areas of the Loess Plateau.
