Applications of water-stable metal-organic frameworks in the removal of water pollutants: A review

Innovative solutions for the removal of emerging microplastics from water by utilizing advanced techniques

Microplastic pollution is one of the most pressing global environmental problems due to its harmful effects on living organisms and ecosystems. To address this issue, researchers have explored several techniques to successfully eliminate microplastics from water sources. Chemical coagulation, electrocoagulation, magnetic extraction, adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and biodegradation are some of the recognized techniques used for the removal of microplastics from water. In addition, membrane-based techniques encompass processes propelled by pressure or potential, along with sophisticated membrane technologies like the dynamic membrane and the membrane bioreactor. Recently, researchers have been developing advanced membranes composed of metal-organic frameworks, MXene, zeolites, carbon nanomaterials, metals, and metal oxides to remove microplastics. This paper aims to analyze the effectiveness, advantages, and drawbacks of each method to provide insights into their application for reducing microplastic pollution.

Highly stable mesoporous Co/Ni mixed metal-organic framework [Co/Ni(μ3-tp)2(μ2-pyz)2] for Co (II) heavy metal ions (HMIs) remediation

A bimetallic cobalt/nickel-based metal-organic framework (MOF), [Co/Ni(μ3-tp)2(μ2-pyz)2], denoted as Co/Ni-MOF, has been successfully prepared by a hydrothermal method. The MOF was prepared by incorporating mixed O- and N- donor ligands, specifically terephthalic acid (tp) and pyrazine (pyz). The Mesoporous Co/Ni-MOF was comprehensively characterized using various analytical methods such as XRD, BET, FT-IR, TGA (23 % char yields), SEM, and EDS analyses. The synthesized mesoporous Co/Ni-MOF was then used to absorb Co (II) from aquatic areas efficiently. Several critical parameters, such as the beginning Co (II) concentration (25-150 mg/L), the effect of pH (2-10), the duration of time (5-30 min), and the amount of adsorbent (0.003-0.02 g), were systematically investigated. Remarkably, the Mesoporous Co/Ni MOF displayed a significant adsorption capacity of 372.66 mg g-1 in the optimum conditions, including pH = 6, amount of adsorbent = 0.003 g, duration of time = 25 min, and beginning Co (II) concentration = 150 mg/L. Adsorption data from the experimental studies of the mesoporous Co/Ni MOF are matched based on the non-linear pseudo-first-order (PSO) kinetic model (R2 = 0.9999), and a chemical process is suggested for chemisorption. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherms of Co (II) heavy metal ions (HMIs) are an excellent fit with the non-linear Temkin, indicating that they explain the sorbent/sorbate interactions concerning the heat of adsorption. It is evident from the thermodynamic parameters that adsorption is a spontaneous and favorable exothermic process. These results highlight the promising adsorption performance and potential applications of the mesoporous Co/Ni-MOF as an effective adsorbent for Co (II) elimination from aquatic areas. Four-cycle regeneration studies were the most effective for the Co (II) under study.

Heterointerface engineering of MXene: Advanced applications in environmental remediation

Contemporary global industrialization, coupled with the relentless growth of the population, has led to a persistent escalation in the emission and accumulation of various toxic and harmful chemicals in the environment, severely disrupting the ecological balance. The development of efficient environmental cleanup materials is a crucial scientific and technological concern. Since the groundbreaking work on Ti3C2Tx in 2011, there has been a huge growing interest in MXene-based composites developed through heterointerface engineering due to its high surface area, hydrophilicity, eco-friendliness, biocompatibility, easy functionalization, excellent thermal/mechanical properties, metal conductivity and rich electronic density. In the area of environmental remediation, MXene-based composites obtained through heterointerface engineering strategies have the ability to effectively remove and systematically monitor contaminants in comparison to virgin MXene, thanks to the synergistic effects and complementary benefits. Heterointerface engineering strategy increases specific surface area, introduces catalytic sites, constructs heterojunctions/Schottky junctions, and facilitates carrier migration and electron-hole separation. These novel MXene-based composites represent significant advances in MXene research and deserve a comprehensive review. Although several excellent reviews and perspectives on the application of MXene-based composites in environmental remediation have been published, there is still a scarcity of comprehensive and systematic assessments on the reliable data and mechanisms of various MXene-based composite materials for pollutant removal and monitoring. In this focused review, the first part briefly introduces the common preparation strategies and characterization methods of single MXene and MXene-based composites, and the second part details the innovative application of MXene-based composites (involving the amalgamation of MXene with metal oxides, metal sulfide, g-C3N4, layered double hydroxides, metal-organic frameworks, single atom/quantum dots, polymers, etc.) in the field of environmental remediation, including carbon dioxide reduction, nitrogen monoxide and volatile organic compounds removal, antibiotic and heavy metal ions degradation, summarizing the relevant performance and mechanisms. Furthermore, the recent advancements in the utilization of MXene-based composites for the sensing of emerging environmental contaminants (antibiotic and antibiotic resistance genes) are summarized. Finally, an outline of the existing challenges and future prospects on this exciting field was narrated for plausible real-world use. This review will help to inspire the diverse design of MXene-based composites and to advance research related to their application in the environmental sector.

Metal-Organic Framework Stability in Water and Harsh Environments from Data-Driven Models Trained on the Diverse WS24 Data Set

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with applications in gas separations and catalysis, but a lack of water stability often limits their practical use given the ubiquity of water. Consequently, it is useful to predict whether a MOF is water-stable before investing time and resources into synthesis. Existing heuristics for designing water-stable MOFs lack generality and limit the diversity of explored chemistry due to narrowly defined criteria. Machine learning (ML) models offer the promise to improve the generality of predictions but require data. In an improvement on previous efforts, we enlarge the available training data for MOF water stability prediction by over 400%, adding 911 MOFs with water stability labels assigned through semiautomated manuscript analysis to curate the new data set WS24. The additional data are shown to improve ML model performance (test ROC-AUC > 0.8) over diverse chemistry for the prediction of both water stability and stability in harsher acidic conditions. We illustrate how the expanded data set and models can be used with a previously developed activation stability model in combination with genetic algorithms to quickly screen ∼10,000 MOFs from a space of hundreds of thousands for candidates with multivariate stability (upon activation, in water, and in acid). We uncover metal- and geometry-specific design rules for robust MOFs. The data set and ML models developed in this work, which we disseminate through an easy-to-use web interface, are expected to contribute toward the accelerated discovery of novel, water-stable MOFs for applications such as direct air gas capture and water treatment.

Sustainable removal of tetracycline and paracetamol from water using magnetic activated carbon derived from pine fruit waste

This work presents highly porous magnetic activated carbon nanoparticles (MPFRC-A) derived from pine fruit residue. The MPFRC-A were produced through a three-step process: physical activation (carbonization temperature: 110-550 °C), chemical activation (H2SO4 (0.1 N, 96%)), and co-precipitation. These nanoparticles were then used to remove tetracycline (TC) and paracetamol (PC) from water. Functionalization with Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of the pine fruit residue-derived activated carbon (PFRC-A) resulted in high saturation magnetization, allowing for separation from aqueous solution using an external magnet. The MPFRC-A adsorbent was characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses, In the experimental section, the effects of various factors on the adsorption process were investigated, including pH, contact time, initial pollutant concentrations, adsorbent dosage, and temperature. Based on these investigations, adsorption isotherm models and kinetics were studied and determined. The results showed that MPFRC-A exhibited a large specific surface area (182.5 m2/g) and a high total pore volume (0.33 cm3/g). The maximum adsorption capacity was achieved at pH 6 and 5 for PC and TC drugs with an adsorbent dose of 400 mg and an initial concentration of 20 mg/L at 25 °C. The study revealed that the experimental data were well-fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 > 0.98), with maximum uptake capacities of 43.75 mg/g for TC and 41.7 mg/g for PC. Outcomes of the adsorption thermodynamics shows non-spontaneity of the reaction and the adsorption process by all adsorbents was endothermic.

Theoretical Study of Copper Squarate as a Promising Adsorbent for Small Gases Pollutants

Copper squarate is a metal-organic framework with an oxo-carbonic anion organic linker and a doubly charged metal mode. Its structure features large channels that facilitate the adsorption of relatively small molecules. This study focuses on exploring the potential of adsorbing small pollutants, primarily greenhouse gases, with additional investigations conducted on larger pollutants. The objective is to comprehend the efficacy of this new material in single and multiple molecular adsorption processes using theoretical methods based on density functional theory. Furthermore, we find that the molecular adsorption energies range from 3.4 KJ∙mol-1 to 63.32 KJ∙mol-1 depending on the size and number of adsorbed molecules. An exception is noted with an unfavorable adsorption energy value of 47.94 KJ∙mol-1 for 4-nitrophenol. More importantly, we demonstrate that water exerts an inhibitory effect on the adsorption of these pollutants, distinguishing copper squarate as a rare MOF with hydrophilic properties. The Connolly surface was estimated to give a more accurate idea of the volume and surface accessibility of copper squarate. Finally, using Monte Carlo simulations, we present a study of adsorption isotherms for individual molecules and molecules mixed with water. Our results point out that copper squarate is an efficient adsorbent for small molecular pollutants and greenhouse gases.

Bionanocomposite MIL-100(Fe)/Cellulose as a high-performance adsorbent for the adsorption of methylene blue

World production of dyes is estimated at more than 800,000 t·yr-1. The purpose of this research falls within the scope of the choice of an effective, local, and inexpensive adsorbent to remove dyes from wastewater. Adsorptive elimination of dyes by commonly accessible adsorbents is inefficient. The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an important class of porous materials offering exceptional properties as adsorbents by improving separation efficiency compared to existing commercial adsorbents. However, its powder form limits its applications. One way to overcome this problem is to trap them in a flexible matrix to form a hierarchical porous composite. Therefore, in this work, we prepared MIL-100 (Fe) embedded in a cellulose matrix named MIL-100(Fe)/Cell, and used it as an adsorbent of methylene blue (MB) dye. According to the BET analysis, the specific surface area of the synthesized MOF is 294 m2/g which is related to the presence of the cellulose as efficient and green support. The structure of this composite is approximately hexagonal. Adsorption was studied as a function of contact time, adsorbent mass and pollutant load (concentration), and pH, and the effect of each of them on absorption efficiency was optimized. The MIL-100(Fe)/Cell was capable of removing 98.94% of MB dye with an initial concentration of 150 mg/L within 10 min at pH = 6.5 and room temperature. The obtained maximum adsorption capacity was 384.615 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm is consistent with the Langmuir models. The mechanism of MB adsorption proceeds through п-п and electrostatic interactions.

Adsorptive removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions: Progress of adsorbents development and their effectiveness

Increased levels of heavy metals (HMs) in aquatic environments poses serious health and ecological concerns. Hence, several approaches have been proposed to eliminate/reduce the levels of HMs before the discharge/reuse of HMs-contaminated waters. Adsorption is one of the most attractive processes for water decontamination; however, the efficiency of this process greatly depends on the choice of adsorbent. Therefore, the key aim of this article is to review the progress in the development and application of different classes of conventional and emerging adsorbents for the abatement of HMs from contaminated waters. Adsorbents that are based on activated carbon, natural materials, microbial, clay minerals, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI), graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are critically reviewed, with more emphasis on the last four adsorbents and their nanocomposites since they have the potential to significantly boost the HMs removal efficiency from contaminated waters. Furthermore, the optimal process conditions to achieve efficient performance are discussed. Additionally, adsorption isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and effects of varying adsorption process parameters have been introduced. Moreover, heavy metal removal driven by other processes such as oxidation, reduction, and precipitation that might concurrently occur in parallel with adsorption have been reviewed. The application of adsorption for the treatment of real wastewater has been also reviewed. Finally, challenges, limitations and potential areas for improvements in the adsorptive removal of HMs from contaminated waters are identified and discussed. Thus, this article serves as a comprehensive reference for the recent developments in the field of adsorptive removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The proposed future research work at the end of this review could help in addressing some of the key limitations facing this technology, and create a platform for boosting the efficiency of the adsorptive removal of heavy metals.

Anilato-Based Coordination Polymers with Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization: Role of the Synthetic Method and Anilato Ligand

We have prepared and characterized three coordination polymers formulated as [Dy2(C6O4Cl2)3(fma)6] ⋅ 4.5fma (1) and [Dy2(C6O4X2)3(fma)6] ⋅ 4fma ⋅ 2H2O with X=Br (2) and Cl (3), where fma=formamide and C6O4X2 2-=3,6-disubstituted-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone dianion with X=Cl (chloranilato) and Br (bromanilato). Compounds 1 and 3 are solvates obtained with slow and fast precipitation methods, respectively. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural and only differ in the X group of the anilato ligand. The three compounds present (6,3)-gon two-dimensional hexagonal honey-comb structures. Magnetic measurements indicate that the three compounds show slow relaxation of the magnetization at low temperatures when a continuous magnetic field is applied, although with different relaxation times and energy barriers depending on X and the crystallisation molecules. Compounds 1-3 represent the first examples of anilato-based lattices with formamide and field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization.

Multilayered Fe3O4@(ZIF-8)3 combined with a computer-vision-enhanced immunosensor for chloramphenicol enrichment and detection

The misuse and overuse of chloramphenicol poses severe threats to food safety and human health. In this work, we developed a magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) pretreatment material coated with a multilayered metal-organic framework (MOF), Fe3O4 @ (ZIF-8)3, for the separation and enrichment of chloramphenicol from fish. Furthermore, we designed an artificial-intelligence-enhanced single microsphere immunosensor. The inherent ultra-high porosity of the MOF and the multilayer assembly strategy allowed for efficient chloramphenicol enrichment (4.51 mg/g within 20 min). Notably, Fe3O4 @ (ZIF-8)3 exhibits a 39.20% increase in adsorption capacity compared to Fe3O4 @ZIF-8. Leveraging the remarkable decoding abilities of artificial intelligence, we achieved the highly sensitive detection of chloramphenicol using a straightforward procedure without the need for specialized equipment, obtaining a notably low detection limit of 46.42 pM. Furthermore, the assay was successfully employed to detect chloramphenicol in fish samples with high accuracy. The developed immunosensor offers a robust point-of-care testing tool for safeguarding food safety and public health.

Machine-learning-driven discovery of metal-organic framework adsorbents for hexavalent chromium removal from aqueous environments

HYPOTHESIS

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely studied for Cr(VI) adsorption in water. Theoretically, numerous MOFs can be synthesised by assembling diverse metals and ligands. However, the traditional manual experimentation for screening high-performance MOFs is resource-intensive and inefficient.

EXPERIMENTS

A screening strategy for MOFs based on machine learning was proposed for the adsorption and removal of Cr(VI) from water. By collecting the characteristics of MOFs and the experimental parameters of Cr(VI) adsorption from the literature, a dataset was constructed to predict the adsorption performance. Among the six regression models, the model trained by the extreme gradient boosted tree algorithm had the best performance and was used to simulate the adsorption and screen potential high-performance adsorbents.

FINDINGS

Structure-property analysis indicated that prepared MOF adsorbents with properties of 0.37 < largest cavity diameter < 0.71 nm, 0.18 < pore volume < 0.57 cm3/g, 412 < specific surface area < 1588 m2/g, 0.43 < void fraction < 0.62 will achieve enhanced adsorption of Cr(VI) in water. High-performance adsorbents were successfully screened using a combination of machine-learning prediction and analysis. Experiments were conducted to verify the exceptional adsorption capacity of UiO-66 and MOF-801. This method effectively identified adsorbents and accelerated the development of new MOF adsorbents for contaminant removal, providing a novel approach for the discovery of superior adsorbents.

Modulation of the Dynamics of a Two-Dimensional Interweaving Metal-Organic Framework through Induced Hydrogen Bonding

Inducing, understanding, and controlling the flexibility in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of utmost interest due to the potential applications of dynamic materials in gas-related technologies. Herein, we report the synthesis of two isostructural two-dimensional (2D) interweaving zinc(II) MOFs, TMU-27 [Zn(bpipa)(bdc)] and TMU-27-NH2 [Zn(bpipa)(NH2-bdc)], based on N,N'-bis-4-pyridyl-isophthalamide (bpipa) and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) or 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (NH2-bdc), respectively. These frameworks differ only by the substitution at the meta-position of their respective bdc groups: an H atom in TMU-27 vs an NH2 group in TMU-27-NH2. This difference strongly influences their respective responses to external stimuli, since we observed that the structure of TMU-27 changed due to desolvation and adsorption, whereas TMU-27-NH2 remained rigid. Using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and CO2-sorption measurements, we discovered that upon CO2 sorption, TMU-27 undergoes a transition from a closed-pore phase to an open-pore phase. In contrast, we attributed the rigidification in TMU-27-NH2 to intermolecular hydrogen bonding between interweaving layers, namely, between the H atoms from the bdc-amino groups and the O atoms from the bpipa-amide groups within these layers. Additionally, by using scanning electron microscopy to monitor the CO2 adsorption and desorption in TMU-27, we were able to establish a correlation between the crystal size of this MOF and its transformation pressure.

Progress in the Elimination of Organic Contaminants in Wastewater by Activation Persulfate over Iron-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

The release of organic contaminants has grown to be a major environmental concern and a threat to the ecology of water bodies. Persulfate-based Advanced Oxidation Technology (PAOT) is effective at eliminating hazardous pollutants and has an extensive spectrum of applications. Iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) and their derivatives have exhibited great advantages in activating persulfate for wastewater treatment. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of recent research progress on the significant potential of Fe-MOFs for removing antibiotics, organic dyes, phenols, and other contaminants from aqueous environments. Firstly, multiple approaches for preparing Fe-MOFs, including the MIL and ZIF series were introduced. Subsequently, removal performance of pollutants such as antibiotics of sulfonamides and tetracyclines (TC), organic dyes of rhodamine B (RhB) and acid orange 7 (AO7), phenols of phenol and bisphenol A (BPA) by various Fe-MOFs was compared. Finally, different degradation mechanisms, encompassing free radical degradation pathways and non-free radical degradation pathways were elucidated. This review explores the synthesis methods of Fe-MOFs and their application in removing organic pollutants from water bodies, providing insights for further refining the preparation of Fe-MOFs.

The hidden threat: Environmental toxins and their effects on gut microbiota

The human gut microbiota (GM), which consists of a complex and diverse ecosystem of bacteria, plays a vital role in overall wellness. However, the delicate balance of this intricate system is being compromised by the widespread presence of environmental toxins. The intricate connection between contaminants in the environment and human well-being has garnered significant attention in recent times. Although many environmental pollutants and their toxicity have been identified and studied in laboratory settings and animal models, there is insufficient data concerning their relevance to human physiology. Consequently, research on the toxicity of environmental toxins in GM has gained prominence in recent years. Various factors, such as air pollution, chemicals, heavy metals, and pesticides, have a detrimental impact on the composition and functioning of the GM. This comprehensive review aims to comprehend the toxic effects of numerous environmental pollutants, including antibiotics, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, heavy metals, and pesticides, on GM by examining recent research findings. The current analysis concludes that different types of environmental toxins can lead to GM dysbiosis and have various potential adverse effects on the well-being of animals. We investigate the alterations to the GM composition induced by contaminants and their impact on overall well-being, providing a fresh perspective on research related to pollutant exposure.

High Capacity Arsenate Removal from Real Samples Using Dihydrotetrazine Decorated Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Zirconium metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) are potential candidates for decontamination of water resources from harmful pollutants due to their modulable porosity and chemical stability in aqueous solutions. Linker functionalization is an approach for tuning the host-guest chemistry of Zr-MOFs and extends their applications in environmental monitoring. In this work, the structure of UiO-66(Zr) (formulated Zr6(OH)4O4(BDC)6, BDC2- = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) was functionalized with dihydrotetrazine group via postsynthesis linker exchange (PSLE) method. The functionalized framework, UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ, was applied for the removal of arsenate ions from aqueous solutions. The results show that UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ can adsorb 583 mg g-1 of As(V) at pH = 7 after 2 h, which is significantly higher than that of the UiO-66(Zr). According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), the removal mechanism is based on possible hydrogen bindings between free -C-NH and -C═N- sites of dihydrotetrazine function with -O- and -OH sites of As(V) species. Removal tests in real samples show that UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ still has a high capacity (220 mg g-1) to As(V) ions in complex matrixes and also can decrease the concentration of As(V) below the detection limit (0.05 ppm) of the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) method. Since the dihydrotetrazine-decorated UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ reaches one the highest adsorption capacities to As(V) species, it can be considered a potential candidate for water treatment in real-life applications.

Synthesis of multiwalled carbon nanotubes/metal-organic framework composite for the determination of neonicotinoid pesticides in medicine and food homology products

A novel extraction adsorbent composite of MWCNTs/NH2-MIL-101(Fe) was synthesized, and was used to extract 6 kinds of neonicotinoid pesticides in medicine and food homology products. The composite was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). MWCNTs were enveloped around MOFs to provide physical support for the crystal structure. The adsorbent has higher adsorption capacity and reusability than pure NH2-MIL-101(Fe). Combined with UPLC-MS/MS, the method showed the low limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 0.01-0.07 μg/kg and 0.04-0.22 µg/kg, respectively. It exhibited high extraction recovery of 77.86-101.10% for neonicotinoid pesticides in spiked samples. Meanwhile, this novel method could be successfully employed for the detection of other medicine and food homology products. Compared with previous reports, this method has advantages in detection limit and extraction recovery, indicating that it can be a preferential choice for the detection of neonicotinoid pesticides.

Cyclodextrin Polymer-Loaded Micro-Ceramic Balls for Solid-Phase Extraction of Triazole Pesticides from Water

A citric acid cross-linked β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) polymer was synthesized and loaded on micro-ceramic balls to fabricate the solid-phase adsorbents (P-MCB) for adsorption and extraction of triazole pesticides from water. The stability of β-CD polymer and P-MCB was investigated in solutions with different pH values at different temperatures. The adsorption properties and the influence of kinetics, sorbent amount, pesticide concentration, and temperature on the adsorption capacity were evaluated. The results showed P-MCB had favorable adsorption of 15.98 mg/g flutriafol in 3.5 h. The equilibrium data followed the Freundlich equation, and the adsorption of flutriafol and diniconazole followed the second-order kinetics. The recovery rate of P-MCB for triazole pesticides in water was satisfactory, and the recovery rate was still 80.1%, even at the 10th cycle. The P-MCB had good stability, with a degradation rate of 0.2% ± 0.08 within 10 days, which could ensure extraction and recycling.

SiO2@AuAg/PDA hybrid nanospheres with photo-thermally enhanced synergistic antibacterial and catalytic activity

Wastewater discharged from industrial, agricultural and livestock production contains a large number of harmful bacteria and organic pollutants, which usually cause serious harm to human health. Therefore, it is urgent to find a "one-stone-two-birds" strategy with good antimicrobial and pollutant degradation activity for treating waste water. In this paper, SiO2@AuAg/Polydopamine (SiO2@AuAg/PDA) core/shell nanospheres, which possessed synergistic "Ag+-release-photothermal" antibacterial and catalytic behaviors, have been successfully prepared via a simple in situ redox polymerization method. The SiO2@AuAg/PDA nanospheres showed good catalytic activity in reducing 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol (0.576 min-1 mg-1). Since the AuAg nanoclusters contain both gold and silver elements, they provided a high photothermal conversion efficiency (48.1%). Under NIR irradiation (808 nm, 2.5 W-2), the catalytic kinetics were improved by 2.2 times. Besides the intrinsic Ag+-release, the photothermal behavior originating from the AuAg bimetallic nanoclusters and the PDA component of SiO2@AuAg/PDA also critically improved the antibacterial performance. Both E. coli and S. aureus could be basically killed by SiO2@AuAg/PDA nanospheres at a concentration of 90 μg mL-1 under NIR irradiation. This "Ag+-release-photothermal" coupled sterilization offers a straightforward and effective approach to antimicrobial therapy, and further exhibits high potential in nanomedicine for combating bacterial contamination in environmental treatment and biological fields.

Role of Interface of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Composites in Persulfate-Based Advanced Oxidation Process for Water Purification

The persulfate activation-based advanced oxidation process (PS-AOP) is an important technology in wastewater purification. Using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as heterogeneous catalysts in the PS-AOP showed good application potential. Considering the intrinsic advantages and disadvantages of MOF materials, combining MOFs with other functional materials has also shown excellent PS activation performance and even achieves certain functional expansion. This Review introduces the classification of MOFs and MOF-based composites and the latest progress of their application in PS-AOP systems. The relevant activation/degradation mechanisms are summarized and discussed. Moreover, the importance of catalyst-related interfacial interaction for developing and optimizing advanced oxidation systems is emphasized. Then, the interference behavior of environmental parameters on the interfacial reaction is analyzed. Specifically, the initial solution pH and coexisting inorganic anions may hinder the interfacial reaction process via the consumption of reactive oxygen species, affecting the activation/degradation process. This Review aims to explore and summarize the interfacial mechanism of MOF-based catalysts in the activation of PS. Hopefully, it will inspire researchers to develop new AOP strategies with more application prospects.

(Eu-MOF)-derived Smart luminescent sensing for Ultrasensitive on-site detection of MiR-892b

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important biomacromolecules used as biomarkers for the diagnosis of several diseases. However, current detection strategies are limited by expensive equipment and complicated procedures. Here, we develop a portable, sensitive, and stable (Eu-MOF)-based sensing platform to detect miRNA via smartphone. The Eu-MOF absorbs the carboxyfluorescein (FAM)-tagged probe DNA (pDNA) to generate hybrid pDNA@Eu-MOF, which can efficiently quench the fluorescence of FAM through a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process. When integrated with a smartphone, the nonemissive pDNA@ Eu-MOF hybrid could be utilized as a portable and sensitive platform to sense miRNA (miR-892b) with a detection limit of 0.32 pM, which could be even distinguished by the naked eye. Moreover, this system demonstrates high selectivity for identifying miRNA family members with single-base mismatches. Furthermore, the expression levels of miRNA in cancer cell samples could be analyzed accurately. Therefore, the proposed method offers a promising guideline for the design of MOF-based sensing strategies and expands their potential applications for diagnostic purposes.

Mechanisms of interaction between metal-organic framework-based material and persulfate in degradation of organic contaminants (OCs): Activation, reactive oxygen generation, conversion, and oxidation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based materials have been of great public interest in persulfate (PS)-based catalytic oxidation for wastewater purification, because of their excellent performance and selectiveness in organic contaminants (OCs) removal in complex water environments. The formation, fountainhead and reaction mechanism of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) in PS-based catalytic oxidation are crucial for understanding the principles of PS activation and the degradation mechanism of OCs. In the paper, we presented the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) of MOFs-based materials for PS activation, including the relationship of structure and removal efficiency, active sites and ROSs as well as OCs. In various MOFs-based materials, there are many factors will affect their performances. We discussed how various surface modification projects affected the characteristics of MOFs-based materials used in PS activation. Moreover, we revealed the process of ROSs generation by active sites and the oxidation of OCs by ROSs from the micro level. At the end of this review, we putted forward an outlook on the development trends and faced challenges of MOFs for PS-based catalytic oxidation. Generally, this review aims to clarify the formation mechanisms of ROSs via the active sites on the MOFs and the reaction mechanism between ROSs and OCs, which is helpful for reader to better understand the QSAR in various MOFs/PS systems.

Recent Advances in Laser-Induced Synthesis of MOF Derivatives

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline materials with permanent pores constructed by the self-assembly of organic ligands and metal clusters through coordination bonds. Due to their diversity and tunability, MOFs are used as precursors to be converted into other types of functional materials by pyrolytic recrystallization. Laser-induced synthesis is proven to be a powerful pyrolytic processing technique with fast and accurate laser irradiation, low loss, high efficiency, selectivity, and programmability, which endow MOF derivatives with new features. Laser-induced MOF derivatives exhibit high versatility in multidisciplinary research fields. In this review, first, the basic principles of laser smelting and the types of materials for laser preparation of MOF derivatives are briefly introduced. Subsequently, it is focused on the peculiarity of the engineering of structural defects and their applications in catalysis, environmental protection, and energy fields. Finally, the challenges and opportunities at the current stage are highlighted with the aim of elucidating the future direction of the rapidly growing field of laser-induced synthesis of MOF derivatives.

Efficient decontamination of organic pollutants from wastewater by covalent organic framework-based materials

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), assembling through covalent bonds, are a rising class of porous materials. Nowadays, various COFs are widely applied in organic pollutants decontamination due to the outstanding capabilities of large surface area, multiple functional groups, porous structure, excellent absorptivity, flexible design and so on. This review concentrates on the applications of COFs in different decontamination technologies such as solid-phase extraction, membrane filtration and sieving, adsorption, and catalysis reaction. The factors influencing water chemistry, such as pH, temperature, salt concentration and natural organic matter, are summarized in terms of their impact on decontamination performance and the extraction mechanisms for the diverse analytes. The interaction mechanisms between COFs and organic pollutants were hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, a perspective on current obstacles and upcoming developments of COFs for organic pollutant removal has been provided. Due to their adaptable and versatile design as well as elaborate and diverse functionalization, COFs possess significant possibility in ameliorating environmental pollution.

An efficient synthesis and characterization of La@MOF-808: A promising strategy for effective arsenic ion removal from water

Addressing serious waterborne arsenic issues, for the first time, lanthanum-doped MOF-808 (La@MOF-808) has been developed to remove total arsenic (Total As) and arsenite [As(III)] from water. This study involves the solvothermal synthesis of La@MOF-808, its characterization via FTIR, XRD, TGA, and SEM, in which distinct physicochemical attributes were identified, and the adsorption capacity of arsenic ions. The saturated adsorption capacity of La@MOF-808 for Total As and As(III) reached 282.9 mg g-1 and 283.5 mg g-1, as compared to 229.7 mg g-1 and 239.1 mg g-1 for pristine MOF-808, respectively. XRD and ATR-FTIR analyses underscored the central roles of electrostatic interactions and hydroxyl groups in the pollutant adsorption process. The impact of temperature, concentration, pH, and exposure duration times on adsorption performance was thoroughly investigated. The Langmuir model showed the maximum adsorption capacities (qmax) of La@MOF-808 was 307.7 mg g-1 for Total As and 325.7 mg g-1 for As(III), surpassing those of MOF-808 adsorbent, which suggests that monolayer adsorption occurred. Optimal adsorption was observed in a pH range of 2.0-7.0, and thermodynamic studies classified the process as spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorbent retains high capacity across repeated cycles, outperforming many standard adsorbents. Lanthanum doping markedly enhances MOF-808's arsenic removal, underscoring its potential for water treatment.

Fabrication of bimetallic-doped materials derived from a Cu-based complex for enhanced dye adsorption and iodine capture

In this work, we used Cu(II) ions, a bis-pyridyl-bis-amide ligand [N,N'-bis(4-pyridinecarboxamide)-1,2-cyclohexane (4-bpah)], and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid [1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (H2CHDA)] to construct a 1D binuclear Cu-based complex, namely {[Cu3(4-bpah)(CHDA)3(H2O)]·2H2O}n (1). Moreover, we also developed a facile method to synthesize two monometallic/bimetallic-doped materials which were derived from the Cu complex (C-N-1 and C-V-1, which were doped with nitrogen and vanadium, respectively). The as-synthesized derived materials were fully characterized and the iodine sorption/release capabilities were investigated in detail. We performed iodine adsorption experiments on the two monometallic/bimetallic-doped materials and found that C-N-1 and C-V-1 possess highly efficient adsorption activities for the adsorption of iodine from solution. The C-N-1 and C-V-1 complexes exhibited remarkable adsorption capacities of 1141.60 and 1170.70 mg g-1, respectively, for iodine from a cyclohexane solution. Moreover, the dye adsorption properties of C-N-1 and C-V-1 were also investigated in detail. The obtained C-N-1 and C-V-1 exhibit effective dye uptake performances in water solution. The adsorption of Congo red (CR) on a single metal carbon material C-N-1 doped with heteroatoms reached equilibrium within 240 min and reached an adsorption capacity of 1357.00 mg g-1 and the adsorption capacities of C-V-1 for methylene blue (MB), gentian violet (GV), rhodamine B (RhB), and CR at room temperature were found to be 187.60, 190.60 and 108.10 and 1501.00 mg g-1 in 180 min, respectively. By comparison, we found that doping vanadium could play an important role in the adsorption processes. The adsorption capacity of C-V-1 (containing the vanadium in its structure) was relatively higher than that of C-N-1, which indicated that the introduction of non-noble metals may effectively tune the adsorption kinetics activity and the introduction of noble metals can change the surface electronegativity of porous carbon materials, thus leading to significantly improved adsorption capabilities.

Effect of Water and Carbon Dioxide on the Performance of Basolite Metal-Organic Frameworks for Methane Adsorption

MOFs are potential adsorbents for methane separation from nitrogen, including recovery in diluted streams. However, water and carbon dioxide can seriously affect the adsorption performance. Three commercial MOFs, basolite C300, F300, and A100, were studied under similar conditions to fugitive methane streams, such as water (75 and 100% relative humidity) and carbon dioxide (0.33%) presence in a fixed bed. The presence of available open metal sites of copper (Cu2+) and aluminum (Al3+) in the case of basolite C300 and A100, respectively, constitutes a clear drawback under humid conditions, since water adsorbs on them, leading to significant methane capacity losses. Surprisingly, basolite F300 is the most resistant material due to its amorphous structure, which hinders water access. The combination of carbon dioxide and water creates a synergy that seriously affects basolite A100, closely related to its breathing effect, but does not constitute an important issue for basolite C300 and F300.

Metal-Organic Framework/Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite Films for Multiple Applications Prepared by Different Methods

The incorporation of different functional fillers has been widely used to improve the properties of polymeric materials. The polyhydroxy structure of PVA with excellent film-forming ability can be easily combined with organic/inorganic multifunctional compounds, and such an interesting combining phenomenon can create a variety of functional materials in the field of materials science. The composite membrane material obtained by combining MOF material with high porosity, specific surface area, and adjustable structure with PVA, a non-toxic and low-cost polymer material with good solubility and biodegradability, can combine the processability of PVA with the excellent performance of porous filler MOFs, solving the problem that the poor machinability of MOFs and the difficulty of recycling limit the practical application of powdered MOFs and improving the physicochemical properties of PVA, maximizing the advantages of the material to develop a wider range of applications. Firstly, we systematically summarize the preparation of MOF/PVA composite membrane materials using solution casting, electrostatic spinning, and other different methods for such excellent properties, in addition to discussing in detail the various applications of MOF/PVA composite membranes in water treatment, sensing, air purification, separation, antibacterials, and so on. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the difficulties that need to be overcome during the film formation process to affect the performance of the composite film and offer encouraging solutions.

A Mini Review of Ceramic-Based MOF Membranes for Water Treatment

Ceramic membranes have been increasingly employed in water treatment owing to their merits such as high-stability, anti-oxidation, long lifespan and environmental friendliness. The application of ceramic membranes mainly focuses on microfiltration and ultrafiltration processes, and some precise separation can be achieved by introducing novel porous materials with superior selectivity. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have developed a wide spectrum of applications in the fields of the environment, energy, water treatment and gas separation due to the diversity and tunable advantages of metal clusters and organic ligands. Although the issue of water stability in MOF materials inhibits the development of MOF membranes in water treatment, researchers still overcome many obstacles to advance the application of MOF membranes in water treatment processes. To the best of our knowledge, there is still a lack of a reviews on the development process and prospects of ceramic-based MOF membranes for water treatment. Therefore, in this review, we mainly summarize the fabrication method for ceramic-based MOF membranes and their application in water treatment, such as water/salt separation, pollutant separation, heavy metal separation, etc. Following this, based on the high structural, thermal and chemical stability of ceramic substrates, and the high controllability of MOF materials, the superiority and insufficient use of ceramic-based MOF membranes in the field of water treatment are critically discussed.

Synthesis of a pyridine-based covalent organic framework as an efficient adsorbent for rhodamine B removal

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), featured with crystalline structures, permanent porosity, and designable organic skeletons, are good candidates for serving as adsorbents. Herein, a new pyridine-based two-dimensional COF (TAPP-DBTA-COF) was constructed via the condensation of 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)pyridine and 2,5-dibromobenzene-1,4-dicarbaldehyde. TAPP-DBTA-COF displayed high-performance for the removal of rhodamine B (Rh B) from water with high capacity, good adaptability and reusability. The maximum adsorption capacity for Rh B can reach up to 1254 mg g-1, and the kinetic constant was determined as k2 = 0.00244 g mg-1 min-1. Moreover, the corresponding amorphous polymer of TAPP-DBTA-COF, termed as TAPP-DBTA-COP, was synthesized from the same starting materials. The lower efficiency of TAPP-DBTA-COP in capture of Rh B revealed that the ordered pore structure, large specific surface area and rich adsorption sites play an important role in adsorption.

CaCu3Ti4O12 Perovskite Materials for Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment

The many pollutants detected in water represent a global environmental issue. Emerging and persistent organic pollutants are particularly difficult to remove using traditional treatment methods. Electro-oxidation and sulfate-radical-based advanced oxidation processes are innovative removal methods for these contaminants. These approaches rely on the generation of hydroxyl and sulfate radicals during electro-oxidation and sulfate activation, respectively. In addition, hybrid activation, in which these methods are combined, is interesting because of the synergistic effect of hydroxyl and sulfate radicals. Hybrid activation effectiveness in pollutant removal can be influenced by various factors, particularly the materials used for the anode. This review focuses on various organic pollutants. However, it focuses more on pharmaceutical pollutants, particularly paracetamol, as this is the most frequently detected emerging pollutant. It then discusses electro-oxidation, photocatalysis and sulfate radicals, highlighting their unique advantages and their performance for water treatment. It focuses on perovskite oxides as an anode material, with a particular interest in calcium copper titanate (CCTO), due to its unique properties. The review describes different CCTO synthesis techniques, modifications, and applications for water remediation.

Nanomaterials in biochar: Review of their effectiveness in remediating heavy metal-contaminated soils

Biochar can be used for soil remediation in environmentally beneficial manner, especially when combined with nanomaterials. After a decade of research, still, no comprehensive review was conducted on the effectiveness of biochar-based nanocomposites in controlling heavy metal immobilization at soil interfaces. In this paper, the recent progress in immobilizing heavy metals using biochar-based nanocomposite materials were reviewed and compared their efficacy against that of biochar alone. In details, an overview of results on the immobilization of Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Cr, and As was presented by different nanocomposites made by various biochars derived from kenaf bar, green tea, residual bark, cornstalk, wheat straw, sawdust, palm fiber, and bagasse. Biochar nanocomposite was found to be most effective when combined with metallic nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄ and FeS) and carbonaceous nanomaterials (graphene oxide and chitosan). This study also devoted special consideration to different remediation mechanisms by which the nanomaterials affect the effectiveness of the immobilization process. The effects of nanocomposites on soil characteristics related to pollution migration, phytotoxicity, and soil microbial composition were assessed. A future perspective on nanocomposites' use in contaminated soils was presented.

Oil-Water Emulsion Flocculation through Chitosan Desolubilization Driven by pH Variation

Water pollution is a major concern in our modern age. The contamination of water, as a valuable and often limited resource, affects both the environment and human health. Industrial processes such as food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical production also contribute to this problem. Vegetable oil production, for example, generates a stable oil/water emulsion containing 0.5-5% oil, which presents a difficult waste disposal issue. Conventional treatment methods based on aluminum salts generate hazardous waste, highlighting the need for green and biodegradable coagulant agents. In this study, the efficacy of commercial chitosan, a natural polysaccharide derived from chitin deacetylation, has been evaluated as a coagulation agent for vegetable oil emulsions. The effect of commercial chitosan was assessed in relation to different surfactants (anionic, cationic, and nonpolar) and pH levels. The results demonstrate that chitosan is effective at concentrations as low as 300 ppm and can be reused, providing a cost-effective and sustainable solution for oil removal. The flocculation mechanism relies on the desolubilization of the polymer, which acts as a net to entrap the emulsion, rather than solely relying on electrostatic interactions with the particles. This study highlights the potential of chitosan as a natural and ecofriendly alternative to conventional coagulants for the remediation of oil-contaminated water.

Metal organic framework-loaded polyethersulfone/polyacrylonitrile photocatalytic nanofibrous membranes under visible light irradiation for the removal of Cr(vi) and phenol from water

In this work, various amounts of the UiO-66-NH₂ and UiO-66-NH₂/TiO₂ MOFs have been loaded into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers supported on polyethersulfone (PES). The visible light irradiation was used to investigate the influence of pH (2-10), initial concentration (10-500 mg L^-1), and time (5-240 min) on the removal efficiency of phenol and Cr(vi) in the presence of MOFs. The reaction time: 120 min, catalyst dosage: 0.5 g L^-1, pH: 2 for Cr(vi) ions and pH: 3 for phenol molecules were optimum to degrade phenol and to reduce Cr(vi) ions. The characterization of the produced samples was performed using X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The capability of synthesized photocatalytic membranes was investigated for the removal of phenol and Cr(vi) ions from water. The water flux, Cr(vi) and phenol solutions fluxes and their rejection percentages were evaluated under pressure of 2 bar in the presence of visible light irradiation and in the dark. The best performance of the synthesized nanofibers was obtained for UiO-66-NH₂/TiO₂ MOF 5 wt% loaded-PES/PAN nanofibrous membranes at temperature of 25 °C and pH of 3. Results demonstrated the high capability of MOFs-loaded nanofibrous membranes for the removal of various contaminants such as Cr(vi) ions and phenol molecules from water.

Adsorption of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and glyphosate from water by Fe3O4-UiO-66-NH2 obtained in a simple green way

In this study, a green adsorbent (Fe₃O₄-UiO-66-NH₂) with the ability of addressing the issues of separation and recovery of UiO-66-NH₂ is obtained using a simple co-precipitation method under environmentally benign conditions. Various characterization techniques are utilized for evaluating the properties of the developed adsorbent. The capability of Fe₃O₄-UiO-66-NH₂ towards 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and glyphosate (GP) from solution is explored. The results revealed that the magnetization process did not destroy the crystal structure of UiO-66-NH₂, which ensured that Fe₃O₄-UiO-66-NH₂ had good adsorption performance for 2,4-D and GP. The adsorption processes showed a wide pH application range, high salt tolerance, and regeneration performance as well as an excellent adsorption rate. Results from thermodynamic study showed that both processes were spontaneous and endothermic. The unit uptake ability of Fe₃O₄-UiO-66-NH₂ for 2,4-D and GP reached up to 249 mg·g^-1 and 183 mg·g^-1 from Langmuir model at 303 K, respectively. When solid-liquid ratio was 2 g·L^-1, Fe₃O₄-UiO-66-NH₂ can reduce the content of 2,4-D or GP with the initial density of 100 mg·L^-1 below the drinking water requirement limit. In addition, the reusability efficiency of Fe₃O₄-UiO-66-NH₂ towards 2,4-D and GP was found to be 86% and 80% using 5 mmol·L^-1 NaOH as eluent. Analysis of simulated water samples indicated that Fe₃O₄-UiO-66-NH₂ could achieve the single or simultaneous removal of 2,4-D and GP from wastewater. Summarily, Fe₃O₄-UiO-66-NH₂ as a green adsorbent can serve as an alternative for removing 2,4-D and GP from water body.

Phosphorylation improved the competitive U/V adsorption on chitosan-based adsorbent containing amidoxime for rapid uranium extraction from seawater

A novel chitosan-based porous composite adsorbent with multifunctional groups, such as phosphoric acid, amidoxime, and quaternary ammonium groups, was prepared to improve the adsorption rate and competitive uranium‑vanadium adsorption of amidoxime group adsorbents. The maximum uranium adsorption capacity of PACNC was 962.226 mg g^-1 at 308 K and pH = 7. The maximum adsorption rate constant of PACNC for uranium was 2.83E-2 g mg^-1 min^-1, which is 2.38 times that of ACNC (1.19E-2 g mg^-1 min^-1). Moreover, the adsorption equilibrium time was shortened from 300 (ACNC) to 50 (PACNC) min. In simulated and real seawater, the K_d and adsorption capacity of PACNC for uranium were approximately 8 and 6.62 times those for vanadium, respectively. These results suggest that phosphorylation significantly improved the competitive adsorption of uranium‑vanadium and uranium adsorption rate. PACNC also exhibited good recycling performance and maintained stable adsorption capacity after five cycles. DFT calculations were used to analyze and calculate the possible co-complex structure of PACNC and uranium. The binding structure of phosphate and amidoxime is the most stable, and its synergistic effect effectively improves the competitive adsorption of uranium-vanadium of amidoxime. All the results demonstrated that PACNC has substantial application potential for uranium extraction from seawater.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for Wastewater Treatment: Superior Adsorbent Materials for the Removal of Hazardous Pollutants

In previous years, different pollutants, for example, organic dyes, antibiotics, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural pollutants, have been of note to the water enterprise due to their insufficient reduction during standard water and wastewater processing methods. MOFs have been found to have potential toward wastewater management. This Review focused on the synthesis process (such as traditional, electrochemical, microwave, sonochemical, mechanochemical, and continuous-flow spray-drying method) of MOF materials. Moreover, the properties of the MOF materials have been discussed in detail. Further, MOF materials' applications for wastewater treatment (such as the removal of antibiotics, organic dyes, heavy metal ions, and agricultural waste) have been discussed. Additionally, we have compared the performances of some typical MOFs-based materials with those of other commonly used materials. Finally, the study's current challenges, future prospects, and outlook have been highlighted.

Functionalized agarose hydrogel with in situ Ag nanoparticles as highly recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for aromatic organic pollutants

In the present research work, a highly recyclable catalyst of Ag-based agarose (HRC-Ag/Agar) hydrogel was successfully fabricated through a simple and efficient in situ reduction method without the aid of additional surface active agent. The interaction between the rich hydroxyl functional (-OH) groups in agarose and Ag can effectively control the growth and dispersion of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) in the HRC-Ag/Agar hydrogel and keep Ag NPs free from chemical contamination, which also guarantees the reusability of HRC-Ag/Agar hydrogel as catalysts. HRC-Ag/Agar hydrogel without freeze drying and calcination was investigated for their potential applications as highly active/recyclable catalysts in reducing aromatic organic pollutants (p-nitrophenol (4-NP), methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB)) by KBH₄. The optimal HRC-Ag/Agar-1.9 hydrogel can complete the catalytic reduction of 4-NP within 11 min. Moreover, HRC-Ag/Agar-1.9 hydrogel achieves the high conversion rate (> 99%) through ten catalytic runs. Similarly, HRC-Ag/Agar-1.9 hydrogel was able to achieve a reduction efficiency of RhB at 98% within 17 min and that of MB at 95% within 40 min. The advantages of simple synthetic procedure, no secondary pollution, strong stability and easily separated make the HRC-Ag/Agar hydrogel have great potential prospect for environmental applications.

One-Step Synthesis of Al-Doped UiO-66 Nanoparticle for Enhanced Removal of Organic Dyes from Wastewater

In this study, a series of Al-doped metal-organic frameworks (Al_xZr_(1-x)-UiO-66) were synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method. Various characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N₂ sorption measurement, suggested that the Al doping was uniform and barely influenced the crystallinity, chemical stability, and thermal stability of the materials. Two cationic dyes, safranine T (ST) and methylene blue (MB), were selected for investigating the adsorption performances of Al-doped UiO-66 materials. Al_0.3Zr_0.7-UiO-66 exhibited 9.63 and 5.54 times higher adsorption capacities than UiO-66, 498 mg/g and 251 mg/g for ST and MB, respectively. The improved adsorption performance can be attributed to π-π interaction, hydrogen bond, and the coordination between the dye and Al-doped MOF. The pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models explained the adsorption process well, which indicated that the dye adsorption on Al_0.3Zr_0.7-UiO-66 mostly occurred through chemisorption on homogeneous surfaces. A thermodynamic study indicated the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption capacity did not decrease significantly after four cycles.

Collaboration of two-star nanomaterials: The applications of nanocellulose-based metal organic frameworks composites

Nanocellulose, as the star nanomaterial in carbohydrate polymers, has excellent mechanical properties, biodegradability, and easy chemical modification. However, further practical applications of nanocellulose are limited by their inadequate functionalization. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as the star nanomaterial in functional polymers, have a large surface area, high porosity, and adjustable structure. The collaboration of nanocellulose and MOFs is a desirable strategy to make composites especially interesting for multifunctional and multi-field applications. What sparks will be produced by the collaboration of two-star nanomaterials? In this review article, we highlight an up-to-date overview of nanocellulose-based MOFs composites. The sewage treatment, gas separation, energy storage, and biomedical applications are mainly summarized. Finally, the challenges and research trends of nanocellulose-based MOFs composites are prospected. We hope this review may provide a valuable reference for the development and applications of carbohydrate polymer composites soon.

Application of Heterogeneous Catalytic Ozonation in Wastewater Treatment: An Overview

Catalytic ozonation is a non-selective mineralization technology of organic matter in water by using active free radicals generated by ozone degradation. Catalytic ozonation technology can be divided into homogeneous catalytic reactions using metal ions as catalysts and heterogeneous catalytic reactions using solid catalysts. Homogeneous catalytic ozonation technology has many problems, such as low mineralization rate, secondary pollution caused by the introduction of metal ions and low utilization efficiency of oxidants, which limit its practical application. Compared with homogeneous catalytic ozonation technology, heterogeneous catalytic ozonation technology has the advantages of easy recovery, lower cost of water treatment, higher activity and improved mineralization rate of organic matter. This overview classifies and describes catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation technology, including the different types of metal oxides, metal-free catalysts, and substrates used to immobilize catalysts. In addition, the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process involved in the multiphase complex reaction process is discussed. The effects of different parameters on the performance of heterogeneous catalytic ozonation are also discussed.
