Prediction of BTEX volatilization in polluted soil based on the sorption potential energy theory

Initial volatile concentration (Cs0) is a crucial parameter for the migration and diffusion of volatile organic pollutants (VOCs) from the soil to the atmosphere. The acquisition of Cs0 is, however, time-consuming and labor-intensive. This study developed a prediction model for Cs0 based on theoretical analysis and experimental simulations. The model was established by correlating the molecular kinetic and sorption potential energy. The pore structure and pore size distribution of the soil were analyzed based on the fractal theory of porous media, followed by calculating the sorption potential energy corresponding to each pore size. It was observed that the pore size distribution of soil influenced BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) volatilization by impacting sorption potential energy. The soil parameters, such as organic matter and soil moisture content, and the initial concentration and physical properties of BTEX were coupled to the prediction model to ensure its practicability. Red soil was finally used to verify the accuracy and applicability of the model. The experimental and predicted values' maximum relative and root-mean-square errors were determined to be 24.2% and 11.7%, respectively. The model provides a simple, rapid, and accurate assessment of soil vapor emission content due to BTEX contamination. This study offers an economical and practical method for quantifying the amount of volatile BTEX in contaminated sites, providing a reference for its monitoring, control, and subsequent remediation.

Environmental pollutants and phosphoinositide signaling in autoimmunity

Environmental pollution stands as one of the most critical challenges affecting human health, with an estimated mortality rate linked to pollution-induced non-communicable diseases projected to range from 20% to 25%. These pollutants not only disrupt immune responses but can also trigger immunotoxicity. Phosphoinositide signaling, a pivotal regulator of immune responses, plays a central role in the development of autoimmune diseases and exhibits high sensitivity to environmental stressors. Among these stressors, environmental pollutants have become increasingly prevalent in our society, contributing to the initiation and exacerbation of autoimmune conditions. In this review, we summarize the intricate interplay between phosphoinositide signaling and autoimmune diseases within the context of environmental pollutants and contaminants. We provide an up-to-date overview of stress-induced phosphoinositide signaling, discuss 14 selected examples categorized into three groups of environmental pollutants and their connections to immune diseases, and shed light on the associated phosphoinositide signaling pathways. Through these discussions, this review advances our understanding of how phosphoinositide signaling influences the coordinated immune response to environmental stressors at a biological level. Furthermore, it offers valuable insights into potential research directions and therapeutic targets aimed at mitigating the impact of environmental pollutants on the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. SYNOPSIS: Phosphoinositide signaling at the intersection of environmental pollutants and autoimmunity provides novel insights for managing autoimmune diseases aggravated by pollutants.

Volatile organic compounds: A threat to the environment and health hazards to living organisms - A review

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the organic compounds having a minimum vapor pressure of 0.13 kPa at standard temperature and pressure (293 K, 101 kPa). Being used as a solvent for organic and inorganic compounds, they have a wide range of applications. Most of the VOCs are non-biodegradable and very easily become component of the environment and deplete its purity. It also deteriorates the water quality index of the water bodies, impairs the physiology of living beings, enters the food chain by bio-magnification and degrades, decomposes and manipulates the physiology of living organisms. To unveil the adverse impacts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their rapid eruption and interference in the living world, a review has been designed. This review presents an insight into the currently available VOCs, their sources, applications, sampling methods, analytic procedures, imposition on the health of aquatic and terrestrial communities and their contamination of the environment. Elaboration has been done on representation of toxicological effects of VOCs on vertebrates, invertebrates, and birds. Subsequently, the role of environmental agencies in the protection of environment has also been illustrated.

Co-metabolic biodegradation of chlorinated ethene in an oxygen- and ethane-based membrane biofilm reactor

Groundwater contamination by chlorinated ethenes is an urgent concern worldwide. One approach for detoxifying chlorinated ethenes is aerobic co-metabilims using ethane (C2H6) as the primary substrate. This study evaluated long-term continuous biodegradation of three chlorinated alkenes in a membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) that delivered C2H6 and O2 via gas-transfer membranes. During 133 days of continuous operation, removals of dichloroethane (DCE), trichloroethene (TCE), and tetrachloroethene (PCE) were as high as 94 % and with effluent concentrations below 5 μM. In situ batch tests showed that the co-metabolic kinetics were faster with more chlorination. C2H6-oxidizing Comamonadaceae and "others," such as Methylococcaceae, oxidized C2H6 via monooxyenation reactions. The abundant non-ethane monooxygenases, particularly propane monooxygenase, appears to have been responsible for C2H6 aerobic metabolism and co-metabolism of chlorinated ethenes. This work proves that the C2H6 + O2 MBfR is a platform for ex-situ bioremediation of chlorinated ethenes, and the generalized action of the monooxygenases may make it applicable for other chlorinated organic contaminants.

Assessing the environmental impacts and costs of biochar and monitored natural attenuation for groundwater heavily contaminated with volatile organic compounds

Although biochar (BC) and monitored natural attenuation (MNA) are regarded as green technologies for remediating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) contaminated groundwater, their life cycle environmental impacts and costs have not been systematically quantified. This work assessed the primary and secondary environmental impacts and the cost of three options for remediating the groundwater at a closed pesticide manufacturing plant site, which was contaminated by high levels of multiple VOCs and is undergoing MNA. The studied options include a combination of MNA and BC (MNA + BC), BC, and pump and treat (PT). The environmental impacts were examined through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using the ReCiPe 2016 method. The costs were evaluated using a Life Cycle Cost (LCC) method created in the SimaPro. The LCA results show that the overall environmental impacts follow the sequence of PT > BC > MNA + BC, but MNA + BC shows evident primary impacts. The CO₂ eq emissions generated from PT are more than five times of MNA + BC or BC. The cement, electricity, and steel for construction, and the operation energy are the environmental hotspots in PT. In MNA + BC and BC, the electricity for feedstock pyrolysis is the environmental hotspot, while the use of BC by-products to generate heat and power has positive environmental credit that compensates other negative environmental burdens. Incorporating institutional controls, using renewable energy and recycled or alternative materials, and developing BC with superior adsorption capacity are recommended to optimize the remediation strategies. The LCC results show that PT renders the highest cost, with cement and electricity being the two most expensive items. Electricity is the dominant contributor to the costs of MNA + BC and BC, while the avoided heat and power generation can save the cost of other items. Overall, this study provides scientific support to develop and optimize green remediation solutions for VOCs contaminated groundwater.
