Determination of trace organic contaminants by a novel mixed-mode online solid-phase extraction coupled to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Dual COF functionalized magnetic MXene composite for enhancing magnetic solid phase extraction of thiophene compounds from oilfield produced waters prior to GC-MS/MS analysis

In this study, a novel COFTABT@COFTATp modified magnetic MXene composite (CoFe2O4 @Ti3C2 @COFTABT@COFTATp) was synthesized by Schiff base reaction and irre-versible enol-keto tautomerization, and employed to establish a sensitive monitoring method for six thiophene compounds in oilfield produced water samples based on magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) prior to gas chromatography coupled with a triple quadruple mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS). The designed magnetic materials exhibited unexpected enrichment ability to target thiophene compounds and achieved good extraction efficiencies ranging from 83 % to 98 %. The developed MSPE/GC-MS/MS method exhibited good linearity in the range of 0.001-100 μg L-1, and obtained lower limits of detection ranging from 0.39 to 1.9 ng L-1. The spiked recoveries of thiophene compounds obtained in three oilfield produced water samples were over the range of 96.26 %-99.54 % with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 3.7 %. Notably, benzothiophene, 4-methyldibenzothiophene and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene were detected in three oilfield-produced water samples. Furthermore, the material still kept favorable stability after six recycling experiments. The adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms as well as adsorption thermodynamics of thiophene compounds were investigated in detail to provide insight into the mechanisms. Overall, the present work contributed a promising strategy for designing and synthesizing new functionalized materials for the enrichment and detection of typical pollutants in the environment.

Rapid screening of drugs in environmental water using metal organic framework/Ti3C2Tx composite coated blade spray-mass spectrometry

Simultaneous rapid screening of multiple drugs of abuse in environmental water facilitates effective monitoring and trend assessments. Herein, a novel porphyrin-based metal organic frameworks modified Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (Cu-TCPP/Ti3C2Tx) composite was prepared and utilized as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating for the simultaneous analysis of 21 drugs from water samples. The composite was embedded with matrix-compatible polyacrylonitrile binder to prepare a coated blade with thin and uniform coating layer. Ambient mass spectrometry (MS) technique was used to create a coated blade spray-MS (CBS-MS) method for the quantitative determination of drugs in water samples. High throughput and automated sample preparation were achieved with the use of a Concept 96-well plate system, enabling analysis of 21 drugs of abuse within 1 min per sample, while using only 8 µL of organic solvent for desorption and CBS-MS detection. The developed method showed favorable linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9983) in the range of 0.05 to 10 ng mL-1, low limits of detection (1.5-9.0 ng L-1), sufficient recovery (67.6-133.2%), as well as satisfactory precision (RSDs≤13.5%). This study not only delivers a novel and efficient SPME coating composite, but also demonstrates the excellent performance of a high-throughput, efficient, and green analytical method for determination of drugs in environmental water.

Internal multiple interactions-adsorption and external zwitterionic polymer-exclusion of restricted access materials as adsorbent for offline and online extraction of neonicotinoid pesticides in Goji samples

A method based on novel restricted access materials (RAMs) for the determination of neonicotinoid pesticides in Goji samples using offline and online solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (LC). RAMs were synthesized using poly(chloromethylstyrene-co-divinylbenzene) (PVBC/DVB) microspheres as substrate, styrene (St) and n-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) were first copolymerized on the interior to construct adsorption sites, and sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) was then polymerized on the exterior to form exclusion sites via two-step surface initiated-atom transfer polymerization. The prepared PVBC/DVB@poly(St-co-NVP)@poly(SBMA) RAMs could efficiently extract neonicotinoid pesticides and automatically exclude proteins. Under the optimized conditions, the developed methods of offline (magnetic SPE and SPE column) and online extraction coupled with LC both using PVBC/DVB@poly(St-co-NVP)@poly(SBMA) RAMs as the extractant, exhibit a wide linearity, low limits of detection and limit of quantification and good inter-day and intra-day precision with satisfactory recoveries. Among these methods, online extraction coupled with LC based on novel RAMs exhibits clear advantages for the determination of neonicotinoid pesticides in Goji samples has clear advantages, such as simple operation by direct injection, short extraction times, and high accuracy with less human error.

Purification of aquaculture wastewater by macrophytes and biofilm systems: Efficient removal of trace antibiotics and enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes

The purification performance of aquaculture wastewater and the risk of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) dissemination in wetlands dominated by macrophytes remain unclear. Here, the purification effects of different macrophytes and biofilm systems on real aquaculture wastewater were investigated, as well as the distribution and abundance of ARGs. Compared to the submerged macrophytes, artificial macrophytes exhibited higher removal rates of TOC (58.80 ± 5.04 %), TN (74.50 ± 2.50 %), and TP (77.33 ± 11.66 %), and achieved approximately 79.92 % removal of accumulated trace antibiotics in the surrounding water. Additionally, the biofilm microbial communities on the surface of artificial macrophytes exhibited higher microbial diversity with fewer antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) enrichment from the surrounding water. The absolute abundance of ARGs (sul1, sul2, and intI1) in the mature biofilm to be one to two orders of magnitude higher than that in the water. Although biofilms could decrease ARGs in the surrounding water by enriching ARB, the intricate network structure of biofilms further facilitated the proliferation of ARB and the dissemination of ARGs in water. Network analysis suggested that Proteobacteria and Firmicutes phyla were dominant and potential carriers of ARGs, contributing 69.00 % and 16.70 %, respectively. Our findings highlight that macrophytes and biofilm systems have great performance on aquaculture wastewater purification, but with high risk of ARGs.

Recent progress in identification of water disinfection byproducts and opportunities for future research

Numerous disinfection by-products (DBPs) are formed from reactions between disinfectants and organic/inorganic matter during water disinfection. More than seven hundred DBPs that have been identified in disinfected water, only a fraction of which are regulated by drinking water guidelines, including trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, bromate, and chlorite. Toxicity assessments have demonstrated that the identified DBPs cannot fully explain the overall toxicity of disinfected water; therefore, the identification of unknown DBPs is an important prerequisite to obtain insights for understanding the adverse effects of drinking water disinfection. Herein, we review the progress in identification of unknown DBPs in the recent five years with classifications of halogenated or nonhalogenated, aliphatic or aromatic, followed by specific halogen groups. The concentration and toxicity data of newly identified DBPs are also included. According to the current advances and existing shortcomings, we envisioned future perspectives in this field.

Preparation of amine-modified amphiphilic resins for the extraction of trace pharmaceuticals and personal care products in environmental waters

Herein, four amine-modified amphiphilic resins were synthesized and utilized as solid-phase extraction (SPE) materials to enrich pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from environmental water. The obtained materials (Strong anion-exchange amphiphilic materials, SAAMs; Weak anion-exchange amphiphilic materials, WAAMs) possessed large specific surface area (473-626 m²/g), high ion exchange capacity (0.89-1.97 mmol/g), and small contact angle (74.41-79.74°), indicating good hydrophilicity. The main factors affecting the efficiency of the extraction process were studied, including column volume, column flow rate, sample salinity and sample pH. Notably, the trend observed in absolute recovery was significantly correlated with the Zeta potential of the employed adsorbents. Furthermore, based on the obtained materials, a method of SPE coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (SPE/LC-MS/MS) was developed, and then utilized to determine PPCPs in the samples collected from the Yangtze River Delta. The Method detection limit (MDL) and Method quantification limit (MQL) ranged from 0.05 to 0.60 ng/L and 0.17 to 2.00 ng/L, respectively, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) below 6.3%, demonstrating good accuracy and sensitivity. As evidenced by comparison with previous literature, the developed method exhibited satisfactory performance, showing great potential for further commercial application in the extraction of trace PPCPs from environmental water samples.

Simultaneous determination of fourteen pharmaceuticals in sewage sludge using online solid-phase extraction-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry combined with accelerated solvent extraction

An online solid-phase extraction (SPE) liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method (HPLC-MS/MS) combined with accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) was developed for simultaneous determination of 14 pharmaceuticals in sludge. In the online SPE procedures, ultrapure water with no additives was used as the loading solvent. In addition, low molecular weight targets such as atenolol were difficult to retain on SPE column after acetone was added to the washing solvent. The response signal of analytes can be greatly improved by adding 0.2% formic acid to the mobile phase. Under the optimized conditions, the recoveries of all the analytes ranged between 75.1 and 112%. Moreover, the limit of detections ranged from 1.8 to 7.9 ug/kg. The precision of analytical data was determined with relative standard deviation (RSD) ≤ 4.87%. This method was successfully applied to determine the concentration of pharmaceuticals in sludge.

Micro-matrix cartridge extraction followed by online micro-solid phase extraction based on polystyrene@hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin nanofibers for selective determination of fipronil and its metabolites in soil

Micro-matrix cartridge extraction coupled on-line to micro-solid phase extraction-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (μ-MCE-online-μ-SPE-HPLC-MS) is presented. Micro-matrix cartridge extraction (μ-MCE) was applied to highly efficient desorption of adsorbed pesticides from contaminated soil with favorable extraction efficiency (100%). Novel polystyrene@hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (PS@HPCD) electrospun nanofibers with 3D network structure were prepared to selectively capture fipronil and its metabolites. High selectivity was obtained with adsorption efficiency ≥ 86.64% via complexation, hydrophobic affinity, and π-π interactions. PS@HPCD nanofibers exhibited remarkable advantages such as excellent enrichment factors (24-55), superior permeability, and long service life (> 65 times). Under the optimum conditions, wide linear range (0.1-1000 ng g^-1), low detection limits (0.0032-0.0067 ng g^-1), high recoveries (84-124.5%), favorable repeatability (RSD ≤ 10.4%, n = 5), and reproducibility (RSD ≤ 7.2%, n = 3) were acquired for fipronil and three metabolites. The developed method was applied to the pesticide determination in actual soils and the ISO-certified soil with satisfactory recoveries (96.5%). The method developed provides a green, efficient, and miniaturized method for the determination of trace pesticide residues in soil.

Photosensitized Transformation of Hydrogen Peroxide in Dissolved Organic Matter Solutions under Simulated Solar Irradiation

Hydrogen peroxide plays an important role in photochemical processes in aquatic environments. However, whether it can be transformed by photoexcited chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) remains unclear. Therefore, this study examined the photosensitized degradation of H₂O₂ in CDOM-enriched solutions under simulated solar irradiation. Our results suggest that the presence of CDOM enhances the photodegradation rate of H₂O₂ via the photosensitization process and ^·OH is generated stoichiometrically with H₂O₂ attenuation. Experimental results with model photosensitizers indicate that one-electron reducing species of CDOM (CDOM^·-), not triplet CDOM, is the primary reactive species that reduces H₂O₂ to yield ^·OH. By monitoring the variation of CDOM^·-, the reaction rate constant of CDOM^·- with H₂O₂ was estimated to be 1.5-fold greater than that with O₂. Furthermore, a wastewater effluent was exposed to simulated solar irradiation with the addition of H₂O₂, and the results demonstrated that the photodegradation of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) was significantly enhanced by the increased ^·OH level. Overall, the current study provided new insights into the photochemical formation of ^·OH via the one-electron reduction of H₂O₂ by CDOM^·-. The solar irradiation of wastewater with H₂O₂ enhancement could be a useful and economically beneficial advanced oxidation process for TrOC abatement.

Development of an online μ-matrix cartridge extraction method for fipronil extraction in contaminated soils

Nowadays, environment fate and behavior of pesticides in soil is still not fully understood due to the lack of standardized soil extraction method. In this work, a soil-filled micro-matrix cartridge was online combined with high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) through a six-way valve for the simultaneous extraction and determination of residual fipronil in soil. Compared with conventional extraction methods, such as hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) extraction, shaking extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE), three-step extraction and matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD), the novel, miniaturized, and integrated online micro-matrix cartridge extraction (online μ-MCE) method exhibited better performance in terms of desorption efficiency (99.4%), analysis time, solvent consumption, sensitivity, and automation. In sequential extraction, online μ-MCE could further desorb fipronil from the extracted soil with the percentage of 1.05%-58.55%. High recovery of 92.69% obtained for the ISO certificated test-soil verified the satisfactory accuracy of the method. Besides, its wide universality was also validated in three variables: 1) various pesticides-soil interactions, 2) four types of compounds (aromatic hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids, alcohols and aldehydes), and 3) three types of soils (sandy soil, silty loam and silty clay). The superior desorption capacity might be attributed to the instantaneously increased high-pressure, continuous flow dynamic desorption and short residence time. The present encouraging findings might shed light on new ways to develop a mild, highly efficient, reliable and one-fit-all extraction method toward pesticide contaminated soil.
