Resource utilization of rice husk biomass: Preparation of MgO flake-modified biochar for simultaneous removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution and polluted soil

Heavy metal immobilization and radish growth improvement using Ca(OH)2-treated cypress biochar in contaminated soil

Heavy metal contamination poses a significant threat to soil quality, plant growth, and food safety, and directly affects multiple UN SDGs. Addressing this issue and offering a remediation solution are vital for human health. One effective approach for immobilizing heavy metals involves impregnating cypress chips with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) to enhance the chemical adsorption capacity of the resulting woody charcoal. In the present study, un-treated cypress biochar (UCBC) and calcium-treated cypress biochar (TCBC), were introduced into pristine and contaminated soil, at rates of 3, 6, and 9% (w/w). Both BCs were alkaline (UCBC pH: 8.9, TCBC pH: 9.7) with high specific surface area, which improved the soil properties (pH, EC, and OM). Radish (Raphanus sativus) cultivated in pots revealed that both UCBC and TCBC demonstrated significant improvements in growth attributes and heavy metal immobilization compared to the control, with TCBC exhibiting superior effects. The TCBC surface showed highly active nanosized precipitated calcium carbonate particles that were active in immobilizing heavy metals. The application of TCBC at a rate of 9% resulted in a substantial reduction in Zn and Cu uptake by radish roots and shoots. In contaminated soil, Zn uptake by radish roots decreased by 55% (68.3-31.0 mg kg-1), and shoots by 37% (49.3-31.0 mg kg-1); Cu uptake decreased by 40% (38.6-23.2 mg kg-1) in roots and 39% (58.2-35.2 mg kg-1) in shoots. Uptake of Pb was undetectable after TCBC application. Principal component analysis (PCA) highlighted the potential of TCBC over UCBC in reducing heavy metal concentrations and promoting radish growth. Future research should consider the long-term effects and microbial interactions of TCBC application.

Mechanisms for synergistically enhancing cadmium remediation performance of biochar: Silicon activation and functional group effects

This work proposes an advanced biochar material (β-CD@SiBC) for controllable transformation of specific silicon (Si) forms through endogenous Si activation and functional group introduction for efficient cadmium (Cd) immobilization and removal. The maximum adsorption capacity of β-CD@SiBC for Cd(II) reached 137.6 mg g-1 with a remarkable removal efficiency of 99 % for 200 mg L-1Cd(II). Moreover, the developed β-CD@SiBC flow column exhibited excellent performance at the environmental Cd concentration, with the final concentration meeting the environmental standard for surface water quality (0.05 mg L-1). The remediation mechanism of β-CD@SiBC could be mainly attributed to mineral precipitation and ion exchange, which accounted for 42 % and 29 % of the remediation effect, respectively, while functional group introduction enhanced its binding stability with Cd. Overall, this work proposes the role and principle of transformation of Si forms within biochar, providing new strategies for better utilizing endogenous components in biomass.

Isothermal and Kinetics Modeling Approach for the Bioremediation of Potentially Toxic Trace Metal Ions Using a Novel Biosorbent Acalypha wilkesiana (Copperleaf) Leaves

The presence of trace metals in wastewater brings serious environmental pollution that threatens human health as well as the ecosystem throughout the world due to their non-biodegradability nature. The present study focuses on the bioremediation of toxic trace metals, namely arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr), using Acalypha wilkesiana leaf raw biomass. The optimization of various process variables was done to determine the removal percentage of trace metal using Acalypha wilkesiana leaf raw biomass, and the optimum conditions were an adsorbent dose of 0.5 g, contact time 10 h, 8 h, and 10 h, process temperature 30 °C, initial concentration of trace metal as 30 µg/L, 30 mg//L, and 40 mg/L, and pH of 7.5, 7 and 7.5 for As5+, and Cd2+ and Cr6+, respectively. Acalypha wilkesiana leaf raw biomass is characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), zeta potential before and after adsorption of the trace metal ions. The study was well fitted for the equilibrium data for Langmuir isotherm for As5+, Cd2+, and Cr6+, Freundlich for As5+, Dubinin-Radushkevinch (D-R) for Cr6+, and Temkin for As5+ and Cr6+. The adsorption of all three trace metals was confirmed by the kinetics and thermodynamic studies to be following pseudo-second-order kinetics with endothermic as well as spontaneous processes, respectively. Thus, the present study indicates Acalypha wilkesiana leaf raw biomass as an effective and efficient novel biosorbent to remediate different trace metals from aqueous systems with its possible application in existing and novel methods for wastewater management.

Exploring metal(loid)s dynamics and bacterial community shifts in contaminated paddy soil: Impact of MgO-laden biochar under different water conditions

In this study, a soil incubation experiment was conducted to explore the influence MgO-treated corn straw biochar (MCB) on the bioavailability and chemical forms of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As), alongside the impact on the bacterial community within paddy soil subjected to both flooded and non-flooded conditions. Raw corn straw biochar (CB) served as the unmodified biochar control, aiding in the understanding of the biochar's role within the composite. The results showed that even at a minimal concentration of 0.5 %, MCB exhibited higher effectiveness in reducing the bioavailability of Pb and Cd compared to 1 % CB. In non-flooded conditions, 0.5 % MCB reduced the bioavailable Pb and Cd by 99.7 % and 87.4 %, respectively, while NaH2PO4-extracted As displayed a 14.5 % increase. With increasing MCB concentrations (from 0.5 % to 1.5 %), soil pH, DOC, EC, available phosphorus, and bioavailable As increased, while bioavailable Pb and Cd exhibited declining tendencies. Flooding did not notably alter MCB's role in reducing Pb and Cd bioavailability, yet it systematically amplified As release. Heavy metal fractions extracted by acetic acid increased in the MCB groups under flooding conditions, especially for As. The inclusion of 0.5 % MCB did not noticeably affect bacterial diversity, whereas higher doses led to reduced diversity and substantial changes in community composition. Specifically, the groups with MCB showed an increase in the Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria phyla, accompanied by a decrease in Acidobacteria. These alterations were primarily attributed to the increased pH and EC resulting from MgO hydrolysis. Consequently, for Pb/Cd stabilization and soil bacterial diversity, a low dosage of MgO-treated biochar is recommended. However, caution is advised when employing MgO-treated biochar in soils with elevated arsenic levels, particularly under flooded conditions.

Efficient adsorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+ from groundwater by MgO-modified sludge biochar in single and binary systems

In this study, MgO-modified sludge biochar (1MBC) prepared from sewage sludge was successfully used as an efficient adsorbent to remove heavy metals from groundwater. The adsorption performance and mechanism of 1MBC on Cu2+ and Cd2+ were investigated in single and binary systems, and the contribution of different mechanisms was quantified. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms analysis revealed that the adsorption processes of Cu2+ and Cd2+ by 1MBC followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model in both systems, indicating that Cu2+ and Cd2+ were mainly controlled by chemisorption, and their theoretical maximum adsorption capacities were 240.36 and 219.06 mg·g-1, respectively. The results of the binary system showed that due to the competitive adsorption, the adsorption capacity of 1MBC for both heavy metals was lower than that of the single system, and the selective adsorption of Cu2+ was higher. The influencing variable experiments revealed that the adsorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+ by 1MBC had a wide pH adaption range and strong anti-interference ability to coexisting organics and ions. The adsorption mechanisms involved ion exchange (Cu: 47.39%, Cd: 53.17%), mineral precipitation (Cu: 35.31%, Cd: 24.18%), functional group complexation (Cu: 10.44%, Cd: 14.53%), and other possible mechanisms (Cu: 6.87%, Cd: 8.12%). Furthermore, 1MBC demonstrated excellent regeneration potential after five cycle times. Overall, the results have significant reference value for the practical application of removing heavy metals.

Recent insights into mechanism of modified bio-adsorbents for the remediation of environmental pollutants

Rapid industrialization has exacerbated the hazard to health and the environment. Wide spectrums of contaminants pose numerous risks, necessitating their disposal and treatment. There is a need for further remediation methods since pollutant residues cannot be entirely eradicated by traditional treatment techniques. Bio-adsorbents are gaining popularity due to their eco-friendly approach, broad applicability, and improved functional and surface characteristics. Adsorbents that have been modified have improved qualities that aid in their adsorptive nature. Adsorption, ion exchange, chelation, surface precipitation, microbial uptake, physical entrapment, biodegradation, redox reactions, and electrostatic interactions are some of the processes that participate in the removal mechanism of biosorbents. These processes can vary depending on the particular biosorbent and the type of pollutants being targeted. The systematic review focuses on the many modification approaches used to remove environmental contaminants. Different modification or activation strategies can be used depending on the type of bio-adsorbent and pollutant to be remediated. Physical activation procedures such as ultrasonication and pyrolysis are more commonly used to modify bio-adsorbents. Ultrasonication process improves the adsorption efficiency by 15-25%. Acid and alkali modified procedures are the most effective chemical activation strategies for adsorbent modification for pollution removal. Chemical modification increases the removal to around 95-99%. The biological technique involving microbial culture is an emerging field that needs to be investigated further for pollutant removal. A short evaluation of modified adsorbents with multi-pollutant adsorption capability that have been better eliminated throughout the adsorption process has been provided.

Adsorption properties of active biochar: Overlooked role of the structure of biomass

Vascular plants account for more than 80% of all biomass on earth and are potential precursors of biochar. However, the changes of vascular bundle have received less attention during the preparation of biochar. In this study, loofah sponge (LS), tangerine pith (TP), and rhodiola rosea (RR), were selected to show the role of vascular bundle in biochar through the pretreatment of vascular bundle. The results showed that the active biochar prepared with vascular bundle protection had high adsorption capacity for methylene blue (LS: 953.53 mg/g, TP: 714.77 mg/g, RR: 583.49 mg/g). The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method was used to measure the specific surface area (SSA) of active biochar. The SSA of LS active biochar prepared by vascular bundle protection was 2262.67 m2/g, and has high adsorption properties under different conditions. In conclusion, the protection of vascular bundle during biochar preparation is important to improve the utilization of biological resources and environmental adsorption.

State-of-the-art adsorption and adsorptive filtration based technologies for the removal of trace elements: A critical review

Water and wastewater are contaminated with various types of trace elements that are released from industrial activities. Their presence, at concentrations above the permissible limit, will cause severe negative impacts on human health and the environment. Due to their cost-effectiveness, simple design, high efficiency, and selectivity, adsorption, and adsorptive filtration are techniques that have received lots of attention as compared to other water treatment techniques. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies help to understand the mechanisms of adsorption and adsorption rates, which can be used to develop and optimize different adsorbents. This state-of-the-art review provides and combines the advancements in different conventional and advanced adsorbents, biosorbents, and adsorptive membranes for the removal of trace elements from water streams. Herein, this review discusses the sources of different trace elements and their impact on human health. The review also covers the adsorption technique with a focus on various advanced adsorbents, their adsorption capacities, and adsorption isotherm modeling in detail. In addition, biosorption is critically discussed together with its mechanisms and biosorption isotherms. In the end, the application of various advanced adsorptive membranes is discussed and their comparison with adsorbents and biosorbents is systematically presented.

From Waste to Resource: Valorization of Lignocellulosic Agri-Food Residues through Engineered Hydrochar and Biochar for Environmental and Clean Energy Applications-A Comprehensive Review

Agri-food residues or by-products have increased their contribution to the global tally of unsustainably generated waste. These residues, characterized by their inherent physicochemical properties and rich in lignocellulosic composition, are progressively being recognized as valuable products that align with the principles of zero waste and circular economy advocated for by different government entities. Consequently, they are utilized as raw materials in other industrial sectors, such as the notable case of environmental remediation. This review highlights the substantial potential of thermochemical valorized agri-food residues, transformed into biochar and hydrochar, as versatile adsorbents in wastewater treatment and as promising alternatives in various environmental and energy-related applications. These materials, with their enhanced properties achieved through tailored engineering techniques, offer competent solutions with cost-effective and satisfactory results in applications in various environmental contexts such as removing pollutants from wastewater or green energy generation. This sustainable approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also paves the way for a more eco-friendly and resource-efficient future, making it an exciting prospect for diverse applications.

Release behavior of fertilizers and heavy metals from iron-loaded sludge biochar in the aqueous environment

In this study, the release behavior of fertilizers (NH4+-N, PO43- and K) and heavy metals (Mn, Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb and Cr) from iron-loaded sludge biochar (ISBC) was investigated to evaluated the feasibility and risks of ISBC as a slow release fertilizer. Their release capacity was significantly enhanced with decreasing initial pH, increasing solid-liquid ratio (RS-L) and rising temperature (p < 0.05). When the initial pH, RS-L and temperature were separately 5 (fertilizers)/1 (heavy metals), 1:5 and 298 K, the final concentrations of NH4+-N, PO43-, K, Mn, Zn and Ni were 6.60, 14.13, 149.4, 53.69, 72.56, and 1.01 mg L-1, while the maximum concentrations of Cu, Pb and Cr were 0.94, 0.77, and 0.22 mg L-1, respectively. Due to the tiny difference between the R2 values, revised pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics models described their release behavior well, suggesting that physical and chemical interactions played an important role. Activation energies greater than 40 kJ mol-1 indicated that the rate-controlling steps of the release of NH4+-N, PO43- and Ni were chemical reactions, while chemical reactions and diffusion together determined the release rates of K, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr because their activation energies were in the range of 20-40 kJ mol-1. The increasingly negative ΔG and positive ΔH and ΔS suggested that their release was a spontaneous (except Cr) and endothermic process with an increase of randomness between the solid-liquid interface. The release efficiency of NH4+-N, PO43- and K were in the ranges of 28.21%-53.97%, 2.09%-18.06% and 39.46%-66.14%, respectively. Meanwhile, the pollution index and evaluation index of heavy metals were in the ranges of 33.31-227.4 and 4.64-29.24, respectively. In summary, ISBC could be used as a slow-release fertilizer with low risk when the RS-L was less than 1:40.

Heavy metal pollution in the aquatic environment: efficient and low-cost removal approaches to eliminate their toxicity: a review

Heavy metal contamination of water sources has emerged as a major global environmental concern, threatening both aquatic ecosystems and human health. Heavy metal pollution in the aquatic environment is on the rise due to industrialization, climate change, and urbanization. Sources of pollution include mining waste, landfill leachates, municipal and industrial wastewater, urban runoff, and natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions, weathering, and rock abrasion. Heavy metal ions are toxic, potentially carcinogenic, and can bioaccumulate in biological systems. Heavy metals can cause harm to various organs, including the neurological system, liver, lungs, kidneys, stomach, skin, and reproductive systems, even at low exposure levels. Efforts to find efficient methods to remove heavy metals from wastewater have increased in recent years. Although some approaches can effectively remove heavy metal contaminants, their high preparation and usage costs may limit their practical applications. Many review articles have been published on the toxicity and treatment methods for removing heavy metals from wastewater. This review focuses on the main sources of heavy metal pollution, their biological and chemical transformation, toxicological impacts on the environment, and harmful effects on the ecosystem. It also examines recent advances in cost-effective and efficient techniques for removing heavy metals from wastewater, such as physicochemical adsorption using biochar and natural zeolite ion exchangers, as well as decomposition of heavy metal complexes through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Finally, the advantages, practical applications, and future potential of these techniques are discussed, along with any challenges and limitations that must be considered.

Recycling of phosphate tailings for an efficient hydroxyapatite-based adsorbent to immobilize heavy metal cations

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is a promising adsorbent for immobilizing heavy metals in soil and water. However, the preparation and modification of HAP from pure chemicals increases its cost and limits its large-scale practical application. In this study, a hydroxyapatite-based adsorbent (HAP_PT) was prepared from phosphate tailing produced in the phosphorus industry to sequester Pb, Cd and Zn from solution. The results showed that HAP_PT was composed of HAP and MgO, with a surface area of 27.74 m²/g. The kinetics studies showed that most Pb and Cd were removed from the initial solution in 4 h and the adsorption of Zn increased with increasing contact time. Metals presented higher adsorption capacities at 35 °C than that at 25 °C. The adsorption isotherms showed that HAP_PT presented high adsorption capacities for Pb, Cd and Zn in mono-metal solutions. The adsorption capacity of Cd at pH 6 was higher than that at pH 3, but the adsorption for Pb and Zn was similar at both pHs. HAP_PT has selectivity for Pb in Pb-Cd-Zn multi-metals solution, and competitive adsorption reduced the adsorption quantity by 53%, 93% and 79% for Pb, Cd and Zn, respectively. The combined results of TEM-EDS, XRD and XPS showed that Pb was immobilized by forming phosphates due to the dissolution of HAP, whereas Cd and Zn were immobilized by forming hydroxide precipitates resulting from the function of MgO in HAP_PT. The results of this study provided an efficient adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals in solution and provided a new perspective on the recycling of phosphate tailings in the phosphorus industry.

Highly-Efficient and Visible Light Photocatalytical Degradation of Organic Pollutants Using TiO2-Loaded on Low-Cost Biomass Husk

A composite composing of TiO₂ nanoparticles load on biomass rice husk (RH) is developed by directly growing TiO₂ nanoparticles on RH. The in-situ growth of the nanocrystals on RH is achieved by a low-cost and one-step homogeneous precipitation. Rapid hydrolysis proceeds at 90 °C by using ammonium fluotitanate and urea to facilitate the selective growth of TiO₂. The method provides an easy access to the TiO₂-RH composite with a strong interaction between TiO₂ nanoparticles and the underlying RH. The structure and composition of TiO₂-RH are characterized by using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. TiO₂ nanoparticles-RH exhibits a good photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange. The results show that 92% of methyl orange (20 mg L^-1) can be degraded within three hours in visible light. The catalytic activity of the composite is not reduced after 6 cycles, and it still reaches 81% after 6 cycles. The enhanced performance is ascribed to the suitable particle size the good dispersibility. It is expected that the high photocatalytical performance and the cost-effective composite presented here will inspire the development of other high-performance photocatalysts.

In Situ Synthesis of MnMgFe-LDH on Biochar for Electrochemical Detection and Removal of Cd2+ in Aqueous Solution

Herein, MnMgFe-layered double hydroxides/biochar (MnMgFe-LDHs/BC) composite was fabricated by immobilizing MnMgFe-LDHs on BC via the coprecipitation method, which was employed as an effective material for the detection and removal of Cd²⁺ from aqueous media. A lamellar structure of MnMgFe-LDHs with abundant surface-hydroxyl groups and various interlayer anions inside present a greater chance of trapping Cd²⁺. Meanwhile, the conductive BC with a porous structure provides numerous channels for the adsorption of Cd²⁺. Using the MnMgFe-LDHs/BC-based sensor, Cd²⁺ can be detected with a low limit of detection down to 0.03 ng/L. The feasibility of detecting Cd²⁺ in paddy water was also carried out, with satisfactory recoveries ranging from 97.3 to 102.3%. In addition, the MnMgFe-LDHs/BC material as an adsorbent was applied to remove Cd²⁺ from water with adsorption capacity of 118 mg/g, and the removal efficiency can reach 91%. These results suggest that the as-prepared MnMgFe-LDHs/BC can serve as a favorable platform for efficient determination and removal of Cd²⁺ in water.
