Arsenic removal and stabilization behavior of schwertmannite@BC (Sch@BC) in contaminated dual media (water/soil): Via sulfate exchange and chemical complexation

Efficient co-stabilization of arsenic and cadmium in farmland soil by schwertmannite under long-term flooding-drying condition

Simultaneously stabilizing of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in co-contaminated soil presents substantial challenges due to their contrasting chemical properties. Schwertmannite (Sch) is recognized as a potent adsorbent for As pollution, with alkali modification showing promising results in the simultaneous immobilization of both As and Cd. This study systematically investigated the long-term stabilization efficacy of alkali-modified Sch in Cd-As co-contaminated farmland soil over a 200-day flooding-drying period. The results revealed that As showed significant mobility in flooded conditions, whereas Cd exhibited increased soil availability under drying phases. The addition of Sch did not affect the trends in soil pH and Eh fluctuations; nonetheless, it led to an augmentation in the levels of amorphous iron oxides and SO42- concentration in soil pore water. At a dosage of 0.5% Sch, there was a notable decrease in the mobility and soil availability of As and Cd under both flooding (34.5% and 53.6% at Day 50) and drying conditions (27.0% and 29.4% at Day 130), primarily promoting the transformation of labile metal(loid) fraction into amorphous iron oxide-bound forms. Throughout the flooding-drying treatment period, Sch maintained stable mineral morphology and mineralogical phase, highlighting its long-term stabilization effect. The findings of this study emphasize the promising application of Sch-based soil remediation agents in mitigating the challenges arising from As-Cd co-contamination. Further research is warranted to explore their application in real farmland settings and their impact on the uptake of toxic metal(loid)s by plants.

Co-occurrence of arsenic and fluoride in groundwater of Guide basin in China: Genesis, mobility and enrichment mechanism

Endemic arsenic poisoning and fluorosis caused by primary high arsenic (As) and high fluoride (F-) groundwater have become one of the most serious environmental geological problems faced by the international society. High As and high F- groundwater exists in Neogene confined aquifers in Guide basin, with concentrations of 355 μg/L and 5.67 mg/L, respectively, and showing a co-occurrence phenomenon of As and F- in the groundwater. This poses a double threat to the health of tens of thousands of local residents. In this study, based on the systematic collection of groundwater and borehole sediment samples, analysis of hydrochemistry and isotope indexes, combined with laboratory tests, purpose of this study is to reveal the migration rule and co-enrichment mechanism of As and F- in aquifers, and finally establish a hydrogeochemical conceptual model of the enrichment process of As and F-. The main conclusions are as follows: hydrochemical type of unconfined and confined groundwater in Guide basin is Ca-Na-HCO3 and Na-Cl-HCO3 type, respectively. Main minerals in sediments are quartz and plagioclase. Concentrations of As and F- are lower in unconfined groundwater, but higher in confined groundwater, and which show a gradual increasing trend along the groundwater flow path. The mineralization of natural organic matter in confined aquifer causes iron and manganese oxide minerals containing As to dissolve gradually, which leads to the gradual release of As into groundwater. Large amount of HCO3- produced by mineralization of organic matter precipitate with Ca2+ in groundwater, resulting in reduction of Ca2+ content, promoting the dissolution of fluoride-containing minerals such as fluorite (CaF2), and continuously releasing F- into groundwater. Meanwhile, competitive adsorption reactions in confined aquifers causes more As and F- to be released from mineral surface into groundwater, which gradually migrate and accumulate along groundwater flow. Finally, it is established that a conceptual model for the formation of high As and F- groundwater in the confined aquifer of Guide basin. The research results not only help to improve our understanding of the formation and evolution of groundwater with high As and F- with similar geological background, but also provide scientific basis for rational development and utilization of groundwater, and prevention and control of chronic As and F- poisoning in local and similar areas.

Pristine and modified biochar applications as multifunctional component towards sustainable future: Recent advances and new insights

Employing biomass for environmental conservation is regarded as a successful and environmentally friendly technique since they are cost-effective, renewable, and abundant. Biochar (BC), a thermochemically converted biomass, has a considerably lower production cost than the other conventional activated carbons. This material's distinctive properties, including a high carbon content, good electrical conductivity (EC), high stability, and a large surface area, can be utilized in various research fields. BC is feasible as a renewable source for potential applications that may achieve a comprehensive economic niche. Despite being an inexpensive and environmentally sustainable product, research has indicated that pristine BC possesses restricted properties that prevent it from fulfilling the intended remediation objectives. Consequently, modifications must be made to BC to strengthen its physicochemical properties and, thereby, its efficacy in decontaminating the environment. Modified BC, an enhanced iteration of BC, has garnered considerable interest within academia. Many modification techniques have been suggested to augment BC's functionality, including its adsorption and immobilization reliability. Modified BC is overviewed in its production, functionality, applications, and regeneration. This work provides a holistic review of the recent advances in synthesizing modified BC through physical, chemical, or biological methods to achieve enhanced performance in a specific application, which has generated considerable research interest. Surface chemistry modifications require the initiation of surface functional groups, which can be accomplished through various techniques. Therefore, the fundamental objective of these modification techniques is to improve the efficacy of BC contaminant removal, typically through adjustments in its physical or chemical characteristics, including surface area or functionality. In addition, this article summarized and discussed the applications and related mechanisms of modified BC in environmental decontamination, focusing on applying it as an ideal adsorbent, soil amendment, catalyst, electrochemical device, and anaerobic digestion (AD) promoter. Current research trends, future directions, and academic demands were available in this study.

The application of mixed stabilizing materials promotes the feasibility of the intercropping system of Gynostemma pentaphyllum/Helianthus annuus L. on arsenic contaminated soil

Intercropping technology and stabilizing materials are common remediation techniques for soils contaminated with heavy metals. This study investigated the feasibility of the Gynostemma pentaphyllum (G. pentaphyllum)/Helianthus annuus L. (H. annuus) intercropping system on arsenic (As) contaminated farmland through field and pot experiments and the regulation of plant As absorption by the application of mixed stabilizing materials in this intercropping system. Field experiments demonstrated that intercropping with H. annuus increased the As concentration in G. pentaphyllum leaves to 1.79 mg kg-1 but still met the requirements of the national food standard of China (2 mg kg-1) (GB2762-2017). Meanwhile, G. pentaphyllum yield in the intercropping system decreased by 15.09%, but the difference was insignificant (P > 0.05). Additionally, the As bioconcentration (BCA) per H. annuus plant in the intercropping system was significantly higher than that in the monoculture system, increasing by 76.37% (P < 0.05). The pot experiment demonstrated that when granite powder, iron sulfate mineral, and "Weidikang" soil conditioner were applied to the soil collectively, G. pentaphyllum leaf As concentration in the intercropping system could be significantly reduced by 42.17%. Rhizosphere pH is the most crucial factor affecting As absorption by G. pentaphyllum in intercropping systems. When these three stabilizing materials were applied simultaneously, the As bioaccumulation (BCA) per H. annuus plant was significantly higher than that of normal intercropping treatment, which increased by 71.12% (P < 0.05), indicating that the application of these stabilizing materials significantly improved the As removal efficiency of the intercropping system. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration in the rhizosphere soil is the most pivotal factor affecting As absorption by H. annuus. In summary, the G. pentaphyllum-H. annuus intercropping model is worthy of being promoted in moderately As polluted farmland. The application of granite powder, iron sulfate mineral, and "Weidikang" soil conditioner collectively to the soil can effectively enhance the potential of this intercropping model to achieve "production while repairing" in the As polluted farmland.

Deep insight on mechanism and contribution of arsenic removal and heavy metals remediation by mechanical activation phosphogypsum

Arsenic-containing wastewater and arsenic-contaminated soil can cause serious environmental pollution. In this study, phosphogypsum with partial mechanical activation of calcium oxide was used to prepare a new phosphogypsum-based passivate (Ca-mPG), and its remediation performance on arsenic-contaminated soil was evaluated in terms of both effectiveness and microbial response. The results showed that the optimum conditions for the preparation of the passivate were optimized in terms of single factor and response surface with a ball milling speed of 200 r/min, a material ratio of 6:4 and a ball milling time of 4 h. Under these conditions, the adsorption capacity was 37.75 mg/g. The leaching concentration of arsenic (As) in the contaminated soil after Ca-mPG modification decreased from 25.75 μg/L to 5.88 μg/L, which was lower than the Chinese national standard (GB/T 5085.3-2007); Ca-mPG also showed excellent passivation effect on other heavy Metals (copper, nickel, cadmium, zinc). In addition, As-resistant bacteria and passivators work together to promote the stabilization effect of contaminants during the remediation of As-contaminated soil. The mechanisms of Cu, As(III)/As(V), Zn, Cd, and Ni removal were related to ion exchange, electrostatic adsorption of substances on heavy metals, calcium binding to other substances to produce precipitation; and microbially induced stabilization of HMs, oxidized. Overall, this study demonstrates an eco-friendly "waste-soil remediation" strategy to solve problems associated with solid waste reuse and remediation of HM-contaminated soils.

Quantification adsorption mechanisms of arsenic by goethite-modified biochar in aqueous solution

In this study, rice straw biochar (BC), goethite (GT), and goethite-modified biochar (GBC) were prepared and their differences in adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of arsenic were explored to provide theoretical and data reference for future design of modified biochar, aiming to address adsorption mechanism weakness and improve the efficiency of arsenic removal in water. Various characterization methods were employed to evaluate the influence of pH, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and chemical analyses of the materials. At temperatures of 283 K, 298 K, and 313 K, the maximum actual adsorption capacity followed the order GBC > GT > BC, while at 313 K, the maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of GBC reached 149.63 mg/g which was 95.92 times that of BC and 6.27 times of GT. Due to precipitation and complexation mechanisms, GBC exhibited more superior arsenic adsorption capacities than BC and GT, contributing to total adsorption ranging from 88.9% to 94.2%. BC was dominated by complexation and ion exchange mechanisms in arsenic adsorption, with contribution proportions of 71.8%-77.6% and 19.1%-21.9%, respectively. In GT, the precipitation mechanism played a significant role in total adsorption, contributing from 78.0% to 84.7%. Although GBC has significant potential for removing arsenic from aqueous solutions, the findings suggest that its ion exchange capacity needs improvement.
