Cost-effective resource utilization for waste biomass: A simple preparation method of photo-thermal biochar cakes (BCs) toward dye wastewater treatment with solar energy

Recent advances in the application of magnetic materials for the management of perfluoroalkyl substances in aqueous phases

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of artificially synthesised organic compounds extensively used in both industrial and consumer products owing to their unique characteristics. However, their persistence in the environment and potential risk to health have raised serious global concerns. Therefore, developing effective techniques to identify, eliminate, and degrade these pollutants in water are crucial. Owing to their high surface area, magnetic responsiveness, redox sensitivity, and ease of separation, magnetic materials have been considered for the treatment of PFASs from water in recent years. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent use of magnetic materials for the detection, removal, and degradation of PFASs in aqueous solutions. First, the use of magnetic materials for sensitive and precise detection of PFASs is addressed. Second, the adsorption of PFASs using magnetic materials is discussed. Several magnetic materials, including iron oxides, ferrites, and magnetic carbon composites, have been explored as efficient adsorbents for PFASs removal from water. Surface modification, functionalization, and composite fabrication have been employed to improve the adsorption effectiveness and selectivity of magnetic materials for PFASs. The final section of this review focuses on the advanced oxidation for PFASs using magnetic materials. This review suggests that magnetic materials have demonstrated considerable potential for use in various environmental remediation applications, as well as in the treatment of PFASs-contaminated water.

Highly elastic photothermal nanofibrillated cellulose aerogels for solar-assisted efficient cleanup of viscous oil spill

Frequent oil spills and illegal industrial pollutant discharge cause ecological and resource damages, so it is necessary to establish efficient adsorption and recovery strategies for oils in wastewater. Herein, inspired by solar-driven viscosity-breaking, we propose a facile approach to fabricate multifunctional nanofibrillated cellulose-based aerogel with high elasticity, excellent photothermal conversion, efficient selective oil adsorption and antibacterial properties. Firstly, copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles were in situ deposited on the template of oxidative nanofibrillated cellulose (ONC), aiming at achieving efficient photothermal effect and antibacterial properties. Ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) was employed to establish multiple crosslinking network between CuS@ONC and polyethyleneimine (PEI). A thin hydrophobic PMTS layer deposited on the surface of aerogel via a facile gas-solid reaction ensured stable oil selectivity. The resulting composite aerogel can rapidly adsorb oil under solar self-heating, significantly reducing the adsorption time from 25 to 5 min. Furthermore, it exhibits excellent adsorption capacities for various oils, retaining over 92 % of its initial capacity even after 20 adsorption-desorption cycles, and the antibacterial properties extend its lifespan. This work offers a promising method for constructing multifunctional aerogels for efficient oil-water separation, especially beneficial for high-viscosity and high-melting-point oil cleanup.

Removal of methylene blue by acrylic polymer adsorbents loaded with magnetic iron manganese oxides: Synthesis, characterization, and adsorption mechanisms

Dyes pose significant risks for aquatic environments and biological health in general owing to their non-biodegradable nature, carcinogenicity, and toxicity. The effective treatment of dye wastewater has become an important research topic. In this study, acrylic polymers (AP) loaded with magnetic iron manganese oxides (MIMO) (AP/MIMO) were prepared and used for the first time for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). Carbon in AP/MIMO exists predominantly in the C-H and C-C forms, with its content reaching 50.7%. Oxygen and nitrogen in AP/MIMO exist mainly in the -CO- and -N-C forms, with contents of up to 41.5% and 73.3%, respectively. MB removal by AP/MIMO was consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.99), equilibrium was achieved within 20 min, and the highest MB capacity of 2611.23 mg g-1 was predicted by the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.91-0.94). AP/MIMO exhibited excellent MB adsorption performance in the pH range of 4-10, with a removal efficiency higher than 99.0% (MB = 100 mL 1000 mg L-1; AP/MIMO = 50 mg). Thermodynamic indicators, such as positive entropy (ΔS0; 98.30 J⋅mol-1⋅K-1), negative Gibbs free energy (ΔG0; -29.40, -28.50, and -27.50 KJ⋅mol-1), and positive enthalpy (ΔH0; 2.30 KJ⋅mol-1), demonstrated that MB removal by AP/MIMO was autonomous, favorable, and endothermic. In addition, the integration of experimental results and theoretical calculations verified that electrostatic interactions were the primary mechanism for MB adsorption at carboxyl sites on AP/MIMO. The total interaction energy between AP and MB was -310.43 kJ⋅mol-1, and the electrostatic effect had a decisive contribution to the MB adsorption, with a value of up to -341.06 kJ⋅mol-1. AP and MB were most likely bound by -COO and S atoms. Overall, AP/MIMO exhibits high adsorption capacity and shows potential as a high-performance magnetic polymer for MB removal.

Porphyrin/phthalocyanine-based porous organic polymers for pollutant removal and detection: Synthesis, mechanisms, and challenges

The growing global concern about environmental threats due to environmental pollution requires the development of environmentally friendly and efficient removal/detection materials and methods. Porphyrin/phthalocyanine (Por/Pc) based porous organic polymers (POPs) as a newly emerging porous material are prepared through polymerizing building blocks with different structures. Benefiting from the high porosity, adjustable pore structure, and enzyme-like activities, the Por/Pc-POPs can be the ideal platform to study the removal and detection of pollutants. However, a systematic summary of their application in environmental treatment is still lacking to date. In this review, the development of various Por/Pc-POPs for pollutant removal and detection applications over the past decade was systematically addressed for the first time to offer valuable guidance on environmental remediation through the utilization of Por/Pc-POPs. This review is divided into two sections (pollutants removal and detection) focusing on Por/Pc-POPs for organic, inorganic, and gaseous pollutants adsorption, photodegradation, and chemosensing, respectively. The related removal and sensing mechanisms are also discussed, and the methods to improve removal and detection efficiency and selectivity are also summarized. For the future practical application of Por/Pc-POPs, this review provides the emerging research directions and their application possibility and challenges in the removal and detection of pollutants.

Preparation of Biochar Composite Microspheres and Their Ability for Removal with Oil Agents in Dyed Wastewater

Oil agents produced from the degreasing treatment of synthetic fibers are typical pollutants in wastewater from printing and dyeing, which may cause large-scale environmental pollution without proper treatment. Purifying oily dye wastewater (DTY) at a low cost is a key problem at present. In this study, biochar microspheres with oil removal ability were prepared and derived from waste bamboo chips using the hydrothermal method. The structure of the biochar microsphere was regulated by activation and modification processes. Biochar microspheres were characterized, and their adsorption behaviors for oily dye wastewater were explored. The results show that the adsorption efficiency of biochar microspheres for oily dye wastewater (DTY) was improved significantly after secondary pyrolysis and the lauric acid grafting reaction. The maximum COD removal quantity of biochar microspheres for DTY was 889 mg/g with a removal rate of 86.06% in 30 min. In addition, the kinetics showed that chemisorption was the main adsorption manner. Considering the low cost of raw materials, the application of biochar microspheres could decrease the cost of oily wastewater treatment and avoid environmental pollution.

Preparation, Modification, and Application of Biochar in the Printing Field: A Review

Biochar is a solid material enriched with carbon produced by the thermal transformation of organic raw materials under anoxic or anaerobic conditions. It not only has various environmental benefits including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving soil fertility, and sequestering atmospheric carbon, but also has the advantages of abundant precursors, low cost, and wide potential applications, thus gaining widespread attention. In recent years, researchers have been exploring new biomass precursors, improving and developing new preparation methods, and searching for more high-value and meaningful applications. Biochar has been extensively researched and utilized in many fields, and recently, it has also shown good industrial application prospects and potential application value in the printing field. In such a context, this article summarizes the typical preparation and modification methods of biochar, and also reviews its application in the printing field, to provide a reference for future work.

Effect of MgCl2 Loading on the Yield and Performance of Cabbage-Based Biochar

Converting more CO₂ absorbed by plant photosynthesis into biomass-activated carbon effectively reduces carbon emissions. In this study, we used a one-step preparation of biomass-activated carbon loaded with MgO nanoparticles to investigate the effect of Mg loading on the catalytic pyrolysis process. The influences of magnesium loading on biochar yield and fixed carbon production were assessed. The addition of 1% Mg weakened the carbonyl C=O, inhibited the dehydroxylation reaction, enhanced the C-H signal strength, and the formation of MgO inhibited the weaker- bound substituent breakage. Additionally, the addition of magnesium altered the morphological features and chemical composition of the biochar material. It also increased the activated carbon mesoporosity by 3.94%, biochar yield by 5.55%, and fixed carbon yield by 12.14%. The addition of 1% Mg increased the adsorption capacity of the activated carbon to potassium dichromate, acid magenta, methylene blue, and tetracycline effluents by 8.71 mg, 37.15 mg, 117.68 mg, and 3.53 mg, respectively. The results showed that MgCl₂ played a significant role in promoting the thermal degradation of biomass and improving the solid yield and adsorption performance of activated carbon.

Effect of iron impregnation ratio on the properties and adsorption of KOH activated biochar for removal of tetracycline and heavy metals

The effect of iron impregnation ratio on magnetic biochars (MBCs) prepared by biomass pyrolysis accompanied by KOH activation has been less reported. In this study, MBCs were produced by one-step pyrolysis/KOH-activation of walnut shell, rice husk and cornstalk with different impregnation ratios (0.3-0.6). The properties, adsorption capacity and cycling performance for Pb(II), Cd(II) and tetracycline of MBCs were determined. MBCs prepared with low impregnation ratio (0.3) showed stronger adsorption capacity on tetracycline. The adsorption capacity of WS-0.3 toward tetracycline was up to 405.01 mg g^-1, while that of WS-0.6 was only 213.81 mg g^-1. It is noteworthy that rice husk and cornstalk biochar with an impregnation ratio of 0.6 were more effective in removing Pb(II) and Cd(II), and the content of Fe⁰ crystals on surface strengthened the ion exchange and chemical precipitation. This work highlights that the impregnation ratio should be changed according to the actual application scenarios of MBC.

Preparation of Reusable Porous Carbon Nanofibers from Oxidized Coal Liquefaction Residue for Efficient Adsorption in Water Treatment

Porous carbon nanofibers are commonly used for adsorption processes owing to their high specific surface area and rich pore structure. However, the poor mechanical properties of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based porous carbon nanofibers have limited their applications. Herein, we introduced solid waste-derived oxidized coal liquefaction residue (OCLR) into PAN-based nanofibers to obtain activated reinforced porous carbon nanofibers (ARCNF) with enhanced mechanical properties and regeneration for efficient adsorption of organic dyes in wastewater. This study examined the effects of contact time, concentration, temperature, pH, and salinity on the adsorption capacity. The adsorption processes of the dyes in ARCNF are appropriately described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacity for malachite green (MG) on ARCNF is 2712.84 mg g^-1 according to the fitted parameters of the Langmuir model. Adsorption thermodynamics indicated that the adsorptions of the five dyes are spontaneous and endothermic processes. In addition, ARCNF have good regenerative performance, and the adsorption capacity of MG is still higher than 76% after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. Our prepared ARCNF can efficiently adsorb organic dyes in wastewater, reducing the pollution to the environment and providing a new idea for solid waste recycling and water treatment.

Development of evaporation technique for concentrating lead acid wastewater from the battery recycling plant, by nanocomposite ceramic substrates and solar/wind energy

Wastewater from car battery recycling plants contains lead ions. This acidic wastewater was treated by the solar steam generation method. In this research, a light porous ceramic substrate (PCS) was made based on clay, human hair, and nano-hydroxyapatite. The physical and chemical characteristics of this PCS were identified by SEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, and TGA. The high porosity in PCSs was created due to the removal of human hair in the calcination process inside the furnace. Microchannels with capillarity and hydrophilicity of nano-hydroxyapatite quickly pump water molecules to the surface of PCSs. The wastewater treatment process was carried out on two laboratory and semi-industrial scales. The temperature of the surface of the PCSs reached 70 °C in less than 60 min with the radiant heat transfer mechanism, and the water molecules were evaporated with an evaporation rate and thermal conversion efficiency were 9.22 Kgm^-2h^-2 and 90%, respectively. The wind blew the vapor away from the system and the rate of evaporation increased. PCSs had the ability to regenerate after several consecutive cycles.

A novel approach simultaneously imparting well-hydrophobicity and photothermal conversion effect to polymer materials: solar-promoted absorption of organic solvents and oils

In this work, a series of polymer materials including pomelo peel, cotton fabric, polyurethane foam, and so on, are treated by heated CH₃SiCl₃, presenting desirable photo-thermal conversion function and hydrophobicity. As a representative material, the surface element and skeleton morphology of pomelo peel foam treated by CH₃SiCl₃ are analyzed detailedly. It is found that well-hydrophobicity (water contact angle of ~147°) and photo-thermal conversion performance (~91.2 °C under one sun) are attributed to the surface carbonization reaction and formation of CH₃-SiO₂ nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the treatment of CH₃SiCl₃ significantly increases the BET surface area to 3.0635 m²/g from 0.0973 m²/g. Therefore, pomelo peel-derived carbon foam presents a desirable adsorption capacity of organic solvents and oils (up to 43.2 times its original weight) and excellent removal efficiency (>99.0%). In addition, the rapid photo-thermal response (achieve ~73 °C at 40 s) and high equilibrium temperature (~91.2 °C) are als° demonstrated in pomelo peel-derived carbon foam. As a result, the absorption rate of highly-viscous oils is effectively promoted by the higher fluidity and capillary action caused by the solar-promoted mechanism. This study offers a scalable, easily operated, and environmentally friendly approach to prepare hydrophobic and photo-thermal materials, thus demonstrating a huge potential in oil/water separation application.

Preparation, adsorption performance and mechanism of MgO-loaded biochar in wastewater treatment: A review

Biochar is a low cost, porous and solid material with an extremely high carbon content, various types of functional groups, a large specific surface area and many other desirable characteristics. Thus, it is often used as an adsorbent or a loading matrix. Nano-magnesium oxide is a crystalline material with small particles and strong ion exchangeability. However, due to the high surface chemical energy, it easily forms agglomerates of particles. Therefore, to combine the advantages of biochar and magnesium, metal magnesium nanoparticles can be loaded onto the surface of biochar with different modification techniques, resulting in biochars with low cost and high adsorption performance to be used as an adsorption matrix (collectively referred to as Mg@BC). This review presents the effects of different Mg@BC preparation methods and synthesis conditions and summarizes the removal capabilities and adsorption mechanisms of Mg@BC for different types of pollutants in water. In addition, the review proposes the prospects for the development of Mg@BC to solve various problems in the future.

Application of Fiber Biochar-MOF Matrix Composites in Electrochemical Energy Storage

Fiber biochar–metal organic framework (MOF) composites were successfully prepared by three different biochar preparation methods, namely, the ionic liquid method, the pyrolysis method, and the direct composite method. The effects of the different preparation methods of fiber biochar on the physical and chemical properties of the biochar–MOF composites showed that the composite prepared by the ionic liquid method with the Zeolite-type imidazolate skeleton -67 (ZIF-67) composite after high temperature treatment exhibited a better microstructure. Electrochemical tests showed that it had good specific capacity, a fast charge diffusion rate, and a relatively good electrochemical performance. The maximum specific capacity of the composite was 63.54 F/g when the current density was 0.01 A/g in 1 mol/L KCl solution. This work explored the preparation methods of fiber biochar–MOF composites and their application in the electrochemical field and detailed the relationship between the preparation methods of the composites and the electrochemical properties of the electrode materials.

A review on the treatment of dyes in printing and dyeing wastewater by plant biomass carbon

Printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW) has characteristics of large amount of water, elevated content of residual dyes, poor biodegradability, high alkalinity and large change of water quality, making its treatment difficult. Development of efficient and economic PDW treatment technology has gained considerable interest in the field of environmental protection. Use of plant biomass carbon (PBC) for the adsorption of dyes is a feasible and economical technology. This review summarizes current literature discussing the preparation method and physicochemical characteristics of PBC prepared from different plant species, the effect of PBC on the removal of dyes, influencing factors affecting the removal, and relevant adsorption models. The shortcomings of current research and the direction of future research are also pointed out in the review.

Loofah Sponge-Derived Hygroscopic Photothermal Absorber for All-Weather Atmospheric Water Harvesting

The loofah gourd is like a natural water tank that stores underground water and drains it out after aging, leaving only a three-dimensional network consisting of hollow and interconnected fibers. This phenomenon inspired us to fabricate a solar-energy-powered sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting device using a loofah sponge. Herein, moisture absorption and photothermal conversion strategies are rationally designed to fast release the absorbed water. This is accomplished by filling the hollow and connected loofah fiber with LiCl and replacing the original luffa peel with a bacterial cellulose (BC)/carbon nanotube (CNT) photothermal conversion membrane. As a result, loofah/BC/CNT (LBC)@LiCl presents a high water absorption capacity of 2.65 g g^-1 at 90% relative humidity (RH) and fast water release performance of 1.33 kg m^-2 h^-1 under 1.0 sun. Noticeably, ∼1.92-2.40 kg LBC@LiCl can produce daily drinking water for adults (2000-2500 mL) in one night outdoors at ∼66% RH, proving that it is a feasible method to overcome the drinking water shortage of poor and arid areas using cheap and renewable biomass material.

The Biochar Derived from Carp for High-Efficiency Solar Steam Generation and Water Purification

Efficient utilization of solar energy to generate steam is a green and promising technology because of its great potential applications in seawater desalination and industrial wastewater purification. However, the practical application of high-efficiency solar steam generation devices is largely overshadowed due to their complex process, high cost, low life-span, and poor thermal performance. Here, novel meat and bonemeal biochar (MBB) with high solar steam generation efficiency is produced by pyrolyzing dead carp at 300, 400, and 500 °C under anoxic conditions. Attributed to its typical hydrophilic pore structure, the photon trapping ability of MBB500 is up to 97% and 84.1% in the ultraviolet and visible regions and near-infrared light regions, respectively. Meanwhile, hydrophilic pore structural provides a strong capillary force for the rapid transmission of water. As a result, under 1 sun illumination (1 kW m-2), the water evaporation rate and the apparent energy conversion efficiency of MBB500 reach 1.48 kg m-2 h-1 and 131.2%, respectively. In addition, MBB500 also exhibits excellent seawater and heavy metal wastewater evaporation effects, providing a new manufacturing strategy for photo-thermal materials, which greatly benefit their practical application in pure water regeneration.

Biocellulose for Treatment of Wastewaters Generated by Energy Consuming Industries: A Review

Water and energy are two of the most important resources used by humanity. Discharging highly polluting wastewater without prior treatment is known to adversely affect water potability, agriculture, aquatic life and even society. One of the greatest threats to water sources are contaminated effluents, which can be of residential or industrial origin and whose disposal in nature must comply with specific laws aimed at reducing their environmental impact. As the oil industry is closely related to energy consumption, it is among the sectors most responsible for global pollution. The damage caused by this industrial sector is present in all countries, whose legislations require companies to carry out wastewater treatment before disposal or recycling in their production process. Bacterial cellulose membranes have been shown to be efficient as filters for the removal of various contaminants, including biological and chemical agents or heavy metals. Therefore, their use could make an important contribution to bio-based technological development in the circular economy. Moreover, they can be used to produce new materials for industry, taking into consideration current environmental preservation policies aimed at a more efficient use of energy. This review aims to compare and describe the applications of cellulose membranes in the treatment of these effluents.

A facile strategy for the preparation of photothermal silk fibroin aerogels with antibacterial and oil-water separation abilities

Curtains with light-to-heat conversion capacity can warm up a room under solar radiation and improve the thermal energy efficiency of buildings, thereby reducing energy consumption during winter. Herein, a photothermal silk fibroin aerogel is synthesized by freeze-drying and curing method, using silk fibroin (SF) as template and scaffold, copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) as photothermal conversion material, polyethylene glycol (PEG) as plasticizer, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the package agent. The results reveal that SF as the template may guide the growth of CuS NPs, and the introduction of PEG improves the flexibility of the prepared CuS@SF aerogel. The composite CuS@SF-PEG/PDMS aerogel not only preserves the initial characteristics of SF aerogel but also integrates hydrophobic, rapid antibacterial ability, high-performance photothermal conversion efficiency, and stable switching effect. The lightweight, self-heating SF-based aerogel can be applied to the preparation of home textiles such as smart curtains. Additionally, it can be used as absorbent for cleaning up viscous oil from water, which could expand the applications of SF-based biomaterials toward meeting the requirements of sustainable developments.

Prediction of batch sorption of barium and strontium from saline water

Celestite and barite formation results in contamination of barium and strontium ions hinder oilfield water purification. Conversion of bio-waste sorbent products deals with a viable, sustainable and clean remediation approach for removing contaminants. Biochar sorbent produced from rice straw was used to remove barium and strontium ions of saline water from petroleum industries. The removal efficiency depends on biochar amount, pH, contact time, temperature, and Ba/Sr concentration ratio. The interactions and effects of these parameters with removal efficiency are multifaceted and nonlinear. We used an artificial neural network (ANN) model to explore the correlation between process variables and sorption responses. The ANN model is more accurate than that of existing kinetic and isotherm equations in assessing barium and strontium removal with adj. R² values of 0.994 and 0.991, respectively. We developed a standalone user interface to estimate the barium and strontium removal as a function of sorption process parameters. Sensitivity analysis and quantitative estimation were carried out to study individual process variables' impact on removal efficiency.
