Abstract
Fabrication of ternary composited photocatalytic nanomaterials with strong interaction is vital to deriving the fast charge separation for efficient photodegradation of organic contaminants in wastewater under visible light. In this work, novel ternary 2D/3D/2D MoS2-In2O3-WS2 multi-nanostructures were synthesized using facile hydrothermal processes. XRD, FTIR, and XPS results confirmed the phase, functional groups, and element composition of pure MoS2, MoS2-In2O3, and MoS2-In2O3-WS2 hybrids. UV-DRS spectra of the MoS2-In2O3-WS2 ternary hybrid indicate maximum absorption in the visible light range with a band-gap energy value of 2.4 eV. The surface of the 2D WS2 nanosheet structure tightly blends and densely disperses 2D MoS2 nanosheets and 3D In2O3 nanocubes. This confirmed the formation of the MoS2-In2O3-WS2 ternary hybrid in the form of 2D/3D/2D multi-nanostructures, which is also indicated from SEM and HR-TEM images. The synthesized MoS2-In2O3-WS2 ternary hybrid showed maximum photocatalytic activity under visible-light for antimicrobial agents such as triclosan (TCS) and trichlorocarban (TCC). The photocatalytic activity of TCS was revealed to be 95% at 90 min, while that of TCC was 93% at 100 min. The reusability and stability tests of the prepared MoS2-In2O3-WS2 ternary hybrid after four consecutive photocatalytic cycles were analyzed by FTIR and SEM, which indicated that the prepared ternary hybrid was very stable. Overall results suggested that the developed MoS2-In2O3-WS2 (2D/3D/2D) multi-nanostructures are environmentally friendly and low-cost nanocomposites as a potential photocatalyst for the removal of antimicrobial agents from wastewater.

Abstract
While treating zinc-containing wastewater, recovering zinc for reuse as a secondary resource has significant environmental and economic benefits. Herein, based on the alkali-activated tourmaline tailings geopolymers (TTG) after adsorption of zinc ions (Zn (II)), a series of new composites with in-situ construction ZnS nanoparticles on TTG (ZnS/TTG) were synthesized, and used as photocatalysts for the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in solution. Specifically, ZnS nanoparticles were uniformly and stably distributed in the layered structure of TTG, interweaving with each other to generate an interfacial electric field, which could induce more photocarrier generation. Meanwhile, TTG acted as an electron acceptor to accelerate the electron transfer at the interface, thus enhancing the photodegradation activity for TCH. The active radical quenching experiments combined with the ESR indicated that the active species produced during the photocatalytic degradation of TCH by ZnS/TTG composites were •O2- and photogenerated h+. When the initial concentration of Zn (II) was 60 mg/L, the synthesized 60-ZnS/TTG composites (0.5 g/L) reached 91.53% degradation efficiency of TCH (10 mg/L) at pH = 6. Furthermore, the possible pathways and mechanism of 60-ZnS/TTG composites photodegraded TCH were revealed with the aid of degraded intermediates. This report not only proposed valuable references for reusing heavy metal ions and removing TCH from wastewater, but also provided promising ideas for realizing the conversion of used adsorbents into high-efficiency photocatalysts.

Abstract
CdIn2S4 and zinc tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (ZnTCPP) were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and an organic dye-sensitized inorganic semiconductor ZnTCPP/CdIn2S4 type II heterojunction was constructed on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate electrode. A sandwich immunostructure for signal-attenuation photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) was constructed using the ZnTCPP/CdIn2S4/FTO photoanode and a horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-ZnFe2O4-Ab2-bovine serum albumin (BSA) immunolabeling complex. The bioenzyme HRP and the HRP-like nanozyme ZnFe2O4 can co-catalyze the oxidation of 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) by H2O2 to produce an insoluble precipitate on the photoanode, thus notably reducing the anodic photocurrent for quantitative determination of cTnI. Under the optimal conditions, the photocurrent at 0 V vs. SCE in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.40) containing 0.1 M ascorbic acid was linear with the logarithm of cTnI concentration from 500 fg mL-1 to 50.0 ng mL-1, and the limit of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) is 0.15 pg mL-1. Spiked recoveries were 95.1% ~ 104% for assay of cTnI in human serum samples.

Abstract
To effectively separate electron-hole pairs produced by light, a heterojunction arrangement can be employed, thereby improving photocatalytic efficiency. In this study, a simple hydrothermal process is used to manufacture carbonized polymer dots/ZnIn2S4 (CPDs/ZIS) heterostructure, which enhances the light absorption and charge carrier lifetime in comparison to bare ZnIn2S4 (ZIS). Upon irradiation with visible light, the 3-CPDs/ZIS composite generates hydrogen at a rate of 133 μmol g-1 h-1, which is 8.9 times faster than that of pure ZIS. The addition of CPDs can increase the range of light that can be absorbed, extend the service life of the optical charge, increase the specific surface area, and promote charge separation and transmission, which could effectively accelerate the photocatalytic reduction reaction. The presence of CPDs results in the introduction of multiple transition energy states and a decrease in the H* adsorption free energy, which enhances the hydrogen evolution activity according to the theoretical calculation findings of density functional theory (DFT) and Gibbs free energy of the hydrogen evolution process. Combining theoretical calculations and experimental results, a direct Z-type heterojunction mechanism is proposed for the hydrogen evolution promotion effectiveness of CPDs/ZIS under visible light.

Abstract
A superior semiconductor material with efficient charge separation and easy reuse could be a promising route for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and pollutant degradation. AgVO3 is one of the best visible light active materials which has attracted much attention for several biological and environmental applications. In the aim of enhancing its stability and recyclability a novel AgVO3/rGO/CuFe2O4 heterojunction was prepared by hydrothermal method for hydrogen generation (H2) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) degradation as well. The composite was well characterized by XRD, SEM, HR-TEM, XPS and VSM. The morphological images suggested the rod shaped AgVO3 and irregular shaped CuFe2O4 are unevenly distributed on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) layers. The hydrogen evolution results indicated that the composite showed around 8.937 mmol g-1h-1 of H2 generation which was ∼2.3 times and ∼9.2 times higher than pure AgVO3 (3.895 mmol g-1h-1) and CuFe2O4 (0.96 mmol g-1h-1) respectively. The 4-NP degradation efficiency of the prepared composite was observed as 94.7% (k = 0.01841 min-1) which is much higher than the AgVO3 (66.3%) and CuFe2O4 (38.2%) after 4 h of irradiation. The higher efficiency could be attributed to the heterojunction formation and faster charge separation. The radical trapping results indicated that the •OH, O2•- and photogenerated h+ are the main species responsible for efficient activity. The AgVO3/rGO/CuFe2O4 heterojunction showed 49.6 emu/g of saturation magnetization and confirms that it could be easily separated with an external magnet, and showed 85.3% of degradation efficiency even after 6 recycles which indicated its higher stability and recyclability. Thus, our study provides new insight into hydrogen generation and phenol degradation using AgVO3 based recyclable composites.

Abstract
Constructing heterojunctions is an effective and controllable approach that can boost the activity of photocatalysts. Inspiringly, this study explored a simple method that can be used to construct novel noble-metal-free Co2P/CdIn2S4 (CPCIS) heterojunction photocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen production. The heterojunction was formed by loading CdIn2S4 (CIS) nanoparticles on the surface of Co2P (CP). The structure, morphology, and optical property of the as-prepared samples were characterized by a series of tests. The DRS results showed that, the light absorption range of CPCIS was extended to the full visible light range and its light absorption intensity obviously was enhanced at 500-800 nm. The PL and photoelectrochemical tests manifested that the formed heterojunction promoted the separation of charges. The LSV results indicated that CP reduced the H2 evolution overpotential of the composites. Besides, CP could serve as active sites of H2 evolution in heterojunction composites. Interestingly, the H2-evolution rate for the optimum CPCIS (471.87 μmol h-1 g-1) was around 3.6 times than CIS-Pt. The elevated activity of CPCIS may mainly attribute to the following aspects: its enhanced light absorption, elevated charge separation and increased active site. More importantly, the photocatalytic activity of heterojunction composites didn't almost decrease after three cycles. This article delivers an idea that can be applied to form heterojunctions between CP and other sulfides for photocatalytic H2 production, easily extending to other transition metal phosphides.

Abstract
Herein, we report a novel Cu2(OH)3 F/CQDs-BiVO4 composite photo-Fenton-like system, which used BiVO4 and Cu2(OH)3F as electron donor and acceptor, respectively, and achieved efficient electron transfer between them through the electron bridging effect of Carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The material exhibited excellent ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal efficiency in the photo-Fenton-like coupled system. Cu2(OH)3 F/CQDs-BiVO4 had an incredibly fast response rate, eliminating 98.1% of CIP from the solution in just 1 h, according to the reaction kinetics. Exploratory tests proved that the catalyst kept up a sufficient level of activity across a wide pH range of 3-11 and in the presence of various anions. The activity, morphology, and crystal structure of the samples did not appreciably alter after five recycles. Finally, a possible reaction mechanism was also proposed based on the band structure, position and reaction species.

Abstract
Developing efficient heterojunction photocatalysts that have a high charge carrier separation rate and improved light-harvesting capacity is a crucial step in solving energy crisis and reducing environmental pollution. Herein, we synthesized few-layered Ti3C2 MXene sheets (MXs) by a manual shaking process, and combined with CdIn2S4 (CIS) to construct novel Ti3C2 MXene/CdIn2S4 (MXCIS) Schottky heterojunction through a solvothermal method. The strong interface between two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2 MXene and 2D CIS nanoplates led to enhanced light-harvesting capacity and promoted charge separation rate. Additionally, the presence of S vacancies on the MXCIS surface helped to trap free electrons. The optimal sample, 5-MXCIS (with 5 wt% MXs loading), exhibited outstanding performance for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution and Cr(VI) reduction under visible light due to the synergistic effect of enhanced light-harvesting capacity and charge separation rate. The charge transfer kinetics was thoroughly studied using multiple techniques. The reactive species of •O2-, •OH and h+ were generated in 5-MXCIS system, and e- and •O2- radicals were found to be the main contributors to Cr(VI) photoreduction. Based on the characterization results, a possible photocatalytic mechanism for H2 evolution and Cr(VI) reduction was proposed. On the whole, this work provides new insights into the design of 2D/2D MXene-based Schottky heterojunction photocatalysts for boosting photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract
To remove multitudinous pollutants from wastewater, the design of a highly efficient and multifunctional photocatalyst is necessary. A novel CQDs/SnO2-x/BiOI photocatalyst (named CSnBI composite) was prepared by combining carbon quantum dots (CQDs), large specific surface area SnO2-x nanocrystals and BiOI nanocrystals to obtain a compact hybrid structure. TEM and Raman techniques confirmed the structure of CSnBI composite. The photocurrent and EIS showed that the photoexcited electron-hole pairs separation efficiency was improved. As anticipated, novel CSnBI photocatalyst can successfully remove tetracycline, methyl orange, E. coli (Escherichia coli) and S. aureus under a LED light due to the hybridization contaction among CQDs, SnO2-x and BiOI. The mechanism showed that the introduction of CQDs promoted visible light absorption and efficient separation of photogenerated carriers of SnO2-x/BiOI heterojunction. The capture experiment and related measurements showed that h+, •O2- and •OH are active species in the photocatalytic process. This study gave a novel case for facile construction of photocatalysts with tight hybrid structure.

Abstract
This work reported a split-type photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunoassay for the detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) based on target-induced biocatalytic precipitation (BCP) by using In2O3/CdIn2S4 heterojunctions as the photosensitizers. The synthesized In2O3/CdIn2S4 heterojunctions improved the efficiency of charge separation and shortened the electron convey path to enhance the photocurrent, thus exhibiting high conductivity and low complexation rates of photogenerated electrons and holes. In the presence of CEA, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) catalyzed 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) to produce benzo-4-chloro-hexadienone (4-CD) through H2O2. Then, 4-CD was deposited onto the surface of In2O3/CdIn2S4 to reduce the photocurrent and realized the signal amplification. The PEC immunoassay revealed an excellent photocurrent toward target CEA within a wide range of 0.01-50 ng mL-1 at a low limit of detection of 2.8 pg mL-1 under the optimum conditions. Multiple switching light excitation tests demonstrated the good reliability and stability of the fabricated PEC biosensor. The accuracy was acceptable in comparison with human CEA enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit.

Abstract
Although there is significant progress in the research of carbon dots (CDs), some challenges such as difficulty in large-scale synthesis, complicated purification, low quantum yield, ambiguity in structure-property correlation, electronic structures, and photophysics are still major obstacles that hinder the commercial use of CDs. Recent advances in synthesis, modification, characterization, and applications of CDs are summarized in this review. We illustrate some examples to correlate process parameters, structures, compositions, properties, and performances of CDs-based materials. The advances in the synthesis approach, purification methods, and modification/doping methods for the synthesis of CDs are also presented. Moreover, some examples of the kilogram-scale fabrication of CDs are given. The properties and performance of CDs can be tuned by some synthesis parameters, such as the incubation time and precursor ratio, the laser pulse width, and the average molar mass of the polymeric precursor. Surface passivation also has a significant influence on the particle sizes of CDs. Moreover, some factors affect the properties and performance of CDs, such as the polarity-sensitive fluorescence effect and concentration-dependent multicolor luminescence, together with the size and surface states of CDs. The synchrotron near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) test has been proved to be a useful tool to explore the correlation among structural features, photophysics, and emission performance of CDs. Recent advances of CDs in bioimaging, sensing, therapy, energy, fertilizer, separation, security authentication, food packing, flame retardant, and co-catalyst for environmental remediation applications were reviewed in this article. Furthermore, the roles of CDs, doped CDs, and their composites in these applications were also demonstrated.
