Surface functionalization of bamboo leave mediated synthesized SiO2 nanoparticles: Study of adsorption mechanism, isotherms and enhanced adsorption capacity for removal of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution

Facile activation of natural calcium-rich sepiolite with oxalic acid for selective Pb(II) removal: Highly-efficient performance, mechanisms and site energy distribution

The design and development of adsorbents with high efficiency, selectivity, and economy for Pb(II) are essential to environmental governance and ecological safety. Herein, an oxalic acid (OA) activated natural sepiolite (nSEP) composite for highly efficient Pb(II) removal was prepared by a facile impregnation strategy. The OA activated nSEP nanocomposite (OA-nSEP) was characterized by various instrumental techniques and its adsorption performance towards Pb(II) was further evaluated through a series of static and dynamic experiments under various environmental conditions. Results revealed that OA reacted with the calcium impurities in nSEP to form calcium oxalate, causing mesoporous structure and larger specific surface area of OA-nSEP. The obtained OA-nSEP possessed super high Pb(II) adsorption capacities (858.4-1252 mg/g), which were much higher than that of most modified clays or conventional materials. The average adsorption site energy and the standard deviation of the site energy distribution were analyzed to investigate the strength of Pb(II) binding onto OA-nSEP and the adsorption site heterogeneity. Mechanism studies confirmed that oxalate groups exerted a primary role in the adsorption process. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) unveiled that the coordination of oxalate with Pb(II) and precipitation of lead oxalate was responsible for the high efficiency and selectivity. Distinguishing feature of high adsorption capacity, specific selective adsorption, abundant availability, and splendid reusability make the OA-nSEP a promising candidate for eliminating Pb(II) in practical scenarios.

Adsorption of methyl orange dye by SiO2 mesoporous nanoparticles: adsorption kinetics and eco-toxicity assessment in Zea mays sprout and Artemia salina

Herein, we prepared the silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) by a modified Stober's method for methyl orange (MO) removal. The SiO2 NPs were found to be spherical with a zeta size of 152.5 d. nm, a PDI of 0.377, and a zeta potential of -5.59 mV. The effect of different parameters (initial dye concentration, reaction time, temperature, and pH) on the adsorption of MO by SiO2 NPs was determined. The adsorption pattern of SiO2 NPs was highly fitted with the Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peteroen, and Temkin isotherm models. The highest adsorption rate was recorded at 69.40 mg/g of SiO2 NPs. Furthermore, the toxic effect of before and after removal of MO in aqueous solution was tested in terms of phytotoxicity and acute toxicity. The SiO2 NPs treated MO dye solution were not exhibited significant toxicity to corn seeds and Artemia salina. These results indicated that SiO2 NPs can be used for the adsorption of MO.

Amino-Functionalized Silica@Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Nanocomposites for the Removal of Cr(VI) from Aqueous Solutions

Amino-functionalized silica@resorcinol-formaldehyde nanocomposites (NH2-SiO2@RF) were synthesized for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions using the sol-gel technique with two simple preparation steps, including the one-pot synthesis of SiO2@RF using the Stöber method and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) modification. The morphology, particle size, functional group, and thermal stability of the obtained nanocomposites were systematically characterized, with the results indicating a uniform sphericity with a particle size of 200 nm and high thermal stability. The adsorption results demonstrated that the preferred pH value was 2, and the data were well fitted with the Langmuir and Temkin isotherm models and quasi-second-order kinetic equation, indicating a high adsorption capacity. The maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity from the nonlinear form of the Langmuir model was 272.6 mg·g-1. The intra-particle diffusion model accurately described the adsorption of Cr(VI) onto NH2-SiO2@RF. The changes in Gibb's free energy, enthalpy, and entropy revealed that Cr(VI) adsorption onto NH2-SiO2@RF was a spontaneous and endothermic process. Furthermore, high selectivity was demonstrated in the material for the removal of Cr(VI) from commonly coexisting ions. The obtained nanocomposites had good regeneration properties and maintained a removal rate above 85% in the fifth adsorption-desorption experiments. Moreover, under the optimized adsorption conditions, the obtained nanocomposites were preliminarily applied to tannery wastewater, demonstrating an excellent removal effect, which indicates their potential application value.

A novel biosensor based on a bio-barcode for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB), the second (after COVID-19) deadliest infectious killer, is a chronic infectious disease caused by infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.T.), where early diagnosis and management are the key to containing the condition. Here, we report a novel biosensor for the detection of M.T. DNA based on magnetic separation, urease catalysis and silicon nanowire field effect transistor (SiNW FET) detection. M.T. DNA is sequence-specifically captured by magnetic nanoparticles and urease-labelled silica nanoparticles simultaneously to form a sandwich complex and urea is catalyzed into ammonium carbonate by urease modified on a sandwich complex. By using SiNW FET, the detection of M.T. DNA is realized indirectly by the detection of ammonium carbonate. The limit of detection (LOD) was determined to be 78.541 fM. The specificity of the biosensor was confirmed by detecting a panel of bacterial species. The utility of the biosensor was demonstrated in real-sample analysis and the recovery study of M.T. DNA was done in the genomic DNA extracted from cultured Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The biosensor holds promise to become a rapid, sensitive and accurate method for clinical diagnosis.

Highly efficient visible light active doped metal oxide photocatalyst and SERS substrate for water treatment

The development of efficient nanomaterials with promising optical and surface properties for multifunctional applications has always been a subject of novel research. In this work, the study of highly efficient TiO₂ nanorods (NRs) and Ta-doped TiO₂ NRs (Ta-TiO₂ NRs) synthesized by alkaline hydrothermal treatment followed by soaking treatment has been reported. NRs were investigated for their potential applications as recyclable/reproducible visible light active photocatalysts and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates in wastewater treatment. NRs were characterized by various microscopic (scanning and transmission electron microscopy), spectroscopic (X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron, UV-visible, photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopy), and surface (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) techniques. The NRs exhibited promising optical properties with a band gap of 2.95 eV (TiO₂ NRs) and 2.58 eV (Ta-TiO₂ NRs) showing excellent photo-degradation activities for methylene blue (MB) dye molecules under natural sunlight. Particularly, Ta-TiO₂ NRs showed enhanced response as visible light active photocatalysts in normal sunlight and also as SERS substrate attributed to the additional defects introduced by Ta doping. It could be explained by the combined effect of doping-induced enhanced visible light absorption and charge transfer (CT) properties of Ta-TiO₂ NRs. Furthermore, Ta-TiO₂ NRs were investigated for their long-term stability, reproducibility of the data, and recyclability in view of their potential applications in water treatment.

Revisiting carboxylic group functionalization of silica sol-gel materials

The carboxylic chemical group is a ubiquitous moiety present in amino acids, a ligand for transition metals, a colloidal stabilizer, and a weak acidic ion-exchanger in polymeric resins and given this property, it is attractive for responsive materials or nanopore-based gating applications. As the number of uses increases, subtle requirements are imposed on this molecular group when anchored to various platforms for the functioning of an integrated chemical system. In this context, silica stands as an inert and multipurpose platform that enables the anchoring of multiple chemical entities combined through several orthogonal synthesis methods on the interface. Surface chemical modification relies on the use of organoalkoxysilanes that must meet the demand of tuned chemical properties; this, in turn, urges for innovative approaches for having an improved, but simple, organic toolbox. Starting from commonly available molecular precursors, several approaches have emerged: hydrosilylation, click thiol-ene additions, the use of carbodiimides or the reaction between cyclic anhydrides and anchored amines. In this review, we analyze the importance of the COOH groups in the area of materials science and the commercial availability of COOH-based silanes and present new approaches for obtaining COOH-based organoalkoxide precursors. Undoubtedly, this will attract widespread interest for the ultimate design of highly integrated chemical platforms.

Improved Cr (VI) adsorption performance in wastewater and groundwater by synthesized magnetic adsorbent derived from Fe3O4 loaded corn straw biochar

This work developed an easy method to utilize corn straw (CS) waste for sustainable development and reduce the volume of waste volume as well as bring value-added. The magnetic adsorbent was prepared by loading Fe₃O₄ onto biochar derived from corn straw (Fe@CSBC), then used for capturing Cr (VI) in groundwater and wastewater samples. The characterization of adsorbents showed that Fe3O4 was successfully loaded on corn straw biochar (CSBC) and contributed to the improvement of the surface area, and surface functional groups like Fe-O, Fe-OOH, CO, and O-H. The presence of iron oxide was further confirmed by XPS and XRD analysis and a magnetization value of 35.6 emu/g was obtained for Fe@CSBC. The highest uptake capacity of Cr (VI) onto Fe@CSBC and CSBC by monolayer were 138.8 and 90.6 mg/g, respectively. By applying magnetic adsorbent Fe@CSBC for the treatment of groundwater and wastewater samples, the chromium could be removed up to 90.3 and 72.6%, respectively. The remaining efficiency of Cr (VI) was found to be 84.5% after four times reused Fe@CSBC, demonstrating the great recyclable ability of the adsorbent. In addition, several interactions between Cr (VI) and Fe@CSBC like ion exchange, complexation, and reduction reaction were discussed in the proposed adsorption mechanism. This study brings an efficient method to turn corn straw biomass into an effective magnetic adsorbent with high adsorption performance and good reusability of Cr (VI) in groundwater as well as in wastewater.

Integrative application of heavy metal-resistant bacteria, moringa extracts, and nano-silicon improves spinach yield and declines its contaminant contents on a heavy metal-contaminated soil

Microorganism-related technologies are alternative and traditional methods of metal recovery or removal. We identified and described heavy metal-resistant bacteria isolated from polluted industrial soils collected from various sites at a depth of 0-200 mm. A total of 135 isolates were screened from polluted industrial soil. The three most abundant isolate strains resistant to heavy metals were selected: Paenibacillus jamilae DSM 13815T DSM (LA22), Bacillus subtilis ssp. spizizenii DSM 15029T DSM (MA3), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa A07_08_Pudu FLR (SN36). A test was conducted to evaluate the effect of (1) isolated heavy metal-resistant bacteria (soil application), (2) a foliar spray with silicon dioxide nanoparticles (Si-NPs), and (3) moringa leaf extract (MLE) on the production, antioxidant defense, and physio-biochemical characteristics of spinach grown on heavy metal-contaminated soil. Bacteria and MLE or Si-NPs have been applied in single or combined treatments. It was revealed that single or combined additions significantly increased plant height, shoot dry and fresh weight, leaf area, number of leaves in the plant, photosynthetic pigments content, total soluble sugars, free proline, membrane stability index, ascorbic acid, relative water content, α-tocopherol, glycine betaine, glutathione, and antioxidant enzyme activities (i.e., peroxidase, glutathione reductase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase) compared with the control treatment. However, applying bacteria or foliar spray with MLE or Si-NPs significantly decreased the content of contaminants in plant leaves (e.g., Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cu), malondialdehyde, electrolyte leakage, superoxide radical ( O 2 · - ) , and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Integrative additions had a more significant effect than single applications. It was suggested in our study that the integrative addition of B. subtilis and MLE as a soil application and as a foliar spray, respectively, is a critical approach to increasing spinach plant performance and reducing its contaminant content under contaminated soil conditions.

The Adsorption Potential of Cr from Water by ZnO Nanoparticles Synthesized by Azolla pinnata

Aqueous solutions containing toxic elements (TEs) (such as hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) can be toxic to humans even at trace levels. Thus, removing TEs from the aqueous environment is essential for the protection of biodiversity, hydrosphere ecosystems, and humans. For plant fabrication of zinc oxide nanoparticles (PF-ZnONPs), Azolla pinnata plants were used, and X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), SEM, and FTIR techniques were used for the identification of PF-ZnONPs and ZnONPs, which were used to remove Cr (VI) from aqueous solution. A number of adsorption parameters were studied, including pH, dose, concentration of metal ions, and contact time. The removal efficiency of PF-ZnONPs for Cr (VI) has been found to be 96% at a time (60 min), 69.02% at pH 4, and 70.43% at a dose (10 mg·L⁻¹). It was found that the pseudo-second-order model best described the adsorption of Cr (VI) onto PF-ZnONPs, indicating a fast initial adsorption via diffusion. The experimental data were also highly consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model calculations.

Preparation of Three-Dimensional MF/Ti3C2Tx/PmPD by Interfacial Polymerization for Efficient Hexavalent Chromium Removal

Heavy metal pollution is a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment, but adsorption technology based on nano adsorbents can effectively treat the crisis. However, due to the nanoscale effect, nano adsorbents have some crucial shortcomings, such as recycling difficulty and the loss of nanoparticles, which seriously limit their application. The feasible assembly of nano adsorbents is an accessible technology in urgent need of a breakthrough. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) adsorbent (MF/Ti₃C₂T_x/PmPD) with excellent performance and favorable recyclability was prepared by interfacial polymerization with melamine foam (MF) as the framework, two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide (Ti₃C₂T_x) as the bridge and Poly (m-Phenylenediamine) (PmPD) as the active nano component. The morphology, structure, mechanical property of MF/Ti₃C₂T_x/PmPD and reference MF/PmPD were investigated through a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transformed infrared spectra (FT-IR), Raman scattering spectra and a pressure-stress test, respectively. Owning to the regulation of Ti₃C₂T_x on the morphology and structure of PmPD, MF/Ti₃C₂T_x/PmPD showed excellent adsorption capacity (352.15 mg/g) and favorable cycling performance. R-P and pseudo-second-order kinetics models could well describe the adsorption phenomenon, indicating that the adsorption process involved a composite process of single-layer and multi-layer adsorption and was dominated by chemical adsorption. In this research, the preparation mechanism of MF/Ti₃C₂T_x/PmPD and the adsorption process of Cr(VI) were systematically investigated, which provided a feasible approach for the feasible assembly and application of nano adsorbents in the environmental field.
