Efficient adsorption of lead and copper from water by modification of sand filter with a green plant-based adsorbent: Adsorption kinetics and regeneration

In this study, pomegranate seed waste (PSW) was added into sand filter (SF) to increase removal efficiency of Lead (Pb(II)) and Copper (Cu(II)) from polluted water. The performance of PSW was compared with activated carbon (AC) as a typical adsorbent. Based on the SEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD, BET and proximate analyses, PSW had porous structure with specific surface area of 2.76 m2/g and active compounds which suggested PSW as an appropriate adsorbent for heavy metals (HMs) adsorption. According to the batch experiments, SF without treatment could only remove 46% and 35% of Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. These numbers increased to 88% and 75% for Pb(II) and Cu(II) by adding 3 g/kg PSW to the SF, respectively under the optimal conditions of HMs initial concentrations = 100 mg/L, pH = 7 and contact time = 60 min. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm followed the pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models, respectively indicating that mainly physisorption was involved in the HMs adsorption process of PSW. Based on the column experiments (flow rate = 62.5 mL/min), the Pb(II) and Cu(II) removal increased from 14% to 60% and 10%-55%, respectively after 5 pore volumes (40 min) by adding 3 g/kg PSW to the SF. Breakthrough curves matched better with Thomas mode rather than Adam's Bohart proving Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Our finding suggested modification of SF with PSW is a promising approach for efficient removal of HMs from water.

Enhanced Cu2+ and Cd2+ removal by a novel co-pyrolysis biochar derived from sewage sludge and phosphorus tailings: adsorption performance and mechanisms

The reutilization of municipal wastes has always been one of the hottest subjects of sustainable development study. In this study, a novel biochar co-pyrolyzed from municipal sewage sludge and phosphorus tailings was produced to enhance the adsorption performance of the composite on Cu2+ and Cd2+. The maximum Cu2+ and Cd2+ adsorption capacity of SSB-PT were 44.34 and 45.91 mg/g, respectively, which were much higher than that of sewage sludge biochar (5.21 and 4.58 mg/g). Chemisorption dominated the whole adsorption process while multilayer adsorption and indirect interaction were also involved. According to the result of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), the load of CO32-, Mg2+, and Ca2+ on the surface of SSB-PT enhanced the precipitation and ion exchange effect. Posnjakite and CdCO3 were formed after the adsorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+, respectively. Besides, complexation, and metal-π interaction were also involved during the adsorption process. Therefore, this study offered a promising method to reuse sewage sludge and phosphorus tailings as an effective adsorbent.

Insight into the wheat residues-derived adsorbents for the remediation of organic and inorganic aquatic contaminants: A review

Wheat is a major grain crop of the world that provides a stable food for human consumption. Large amounts of by-products/waste materials are produced after the harvesting and processing of wheat crop. Such materials can cause an environmental issue if not disposed of properly. Several studies have shown that wheat residues can be efficient precursors for adsorbents because of their availability, renewability, lignocellulosic composition, and surface active groups enriched structure. In the literature, there are few review articles that address wheat residues-based adsorbents. However, these reviews were specific in terms of adsorbate or adsorbent and did not provide detailed information about the modification, properties, and regeneration of these adsorbents. This article extensively reviews the utilization of wheat biomass/waste including straw, bran, husk, and stalk as precursors for raw or untreated, chemically treated, carbonaceous, and composite adsorbents against various environmental pollutants. The influences of inlet pollutant amount, adsorbent dose, pH, temperature, and time on the performance of adsorbents against pollutants were considered. The maximum uptakes, equilibrium time, and adsorption nature were identified from isotherms, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies. The highest adsorbed amounts of most tested contaminants were 448.20, 322.58, and 578.13 mg/g for lead, chromium, and copper, 1374.6 and 1449.4 mg/g for methylene blue and malachite green, and 854.75, 179.21, and 107.77 mg/g for tetracycline, phosphate, and nitrate, respectively. For the studied adsorbate/adsorbent systems the adsorption mechanism and regeneration were also discussed. Significant results and future directions are finally presented.

Ultrafast and highly efficient Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal by magnetic adsorbents derived from gypsum and corncob: Performances and mechanisms

The utilization of gypsum and biomass in environmental remediation has become a novel approach to promote waste recycling. Generally, raw waste materials exhibit limited adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions (HMIs) and often result in poor solid-liquid separation. In this study, through co-pyrolysis with corncob waste, titanium gypsum (TiG) was transformed into magnetic adsorbents (GCx, where x denotes the proportion of corncob in the gypsum-corncob mixture) for the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II). GC10, the optimal adsorbent, which was composed primarily of anhydrite, calcium sulfide, and magnetic Fe3O4, exhibited significantly faster adsorption kinetics (rate constant k1 was 218 times and 9 times of raw TiG for Cd(II) and Pb(II)) and higher adsorption capacity (Qe exceeded 200 mg/g for Cd(II) and 400 mg/g for Pb(II)) than raw TiG and previous adsorbents. Cd(II) removal was more profoundly inhibited in a Cd(II) + Pb(II) binary system, suggesting that GC10 showed better selectivity for Pb(II). Moreover, GC10 could be easily separated from purified water for further recovery, due to its high saturation magnetization value (6.3 emu/g). The superior removal capabilities of GC10 were due to adsorption and surface precipitation of metal sulfides and metal sulfates on the adsorbent surface. Overall, these waste-derived magnetic adsorbents provide a novel and sustainable approach to waste recycling and the deep purification of multiple HMIs.

Pristine and modified biochar applications as multifunctional component towards sustainable future: Recent advances and new insights

Employing biomass for environmental conservation is regarded as a successful and environmentally friendly technique since they are cost-effective, renewable, and abundant. Biochar (BC), a thermochemically converted biomass, has a considerably lower production cost than the other conventional activated carbons. This material's distinctive properties, including a high carbon content, good electrical conductivity (EC), high stability, and a large surface area, can be utilized in various research fields. BC is feasible as a renewable source for potential applications that may achieve a comprehensive economic niche. Despite being an inexpensive and environmentally sustainable product, research has indicated that pristine BC possesses restricted properties that prevent it from fulfilling the intended remediation objectives. Consequently, modifications must be made to BC to strengthen its physicochemical properties and, thereby, its efficacy in decontaminating the environment. Modified BC, an enhanced iteration of BC, has garnered considerable interest within academia. Many modification techniques have been suggested to augment BC's functionality, including its adsorption and immobilization reliability. Modified BC is overviewed in its production, functionality, applications, and regeneration. This work provides a holistic review of the recent advances in synthesizing modified BC through physical, chemical, or biological methods to achieve enhanced performance in a specific application, which has generated considerable research interest. Surface chemistry modifications require the initiation of surface functional groups, which can be accomplished through various techniques. Therefore, the fundamental objective of these modification techniques is to improve the efficacy of BC contaminant removal, typically through adjustments in its physical or chemical characteristics, including surface area or functionality. In addition, this article summarized and discussed the applications and related mechanisms of modified BC in environmental decontamination, focusing on applying it as an ideal adsorbent, soil amendment, catalyst, electrochemical device, and anaerobic digestion (AD) promoter. Current research trends, future directions, and academic demands were available in this study.

Adsorption of metal ions by oceanic manganese nodule and deep-sea sediment: Behaviour, mechanism and evaluation

Deep-sea mining disturbs the sediment on the seabed to form plumose flows, carrying metal ions that are transmitted through the food chain, posing a serious threat to marine ecosystems and human health. In this study, two types of marine raw materials were screened: Oceanic Manganese Nodules (OMN) and Deep-sea Sediments (DSS), and prepared the spherical regenerative adsorption materials OMN@SA, DSS@SA and OMN&DSS@SA using sodium alginate (SA) by sol-gel method. Preliminary investigations on the adsorption effect of metal ions were carried out. OMN@SA exhibited the best adsorption capacity, with the adsorption quantities for Cu2+, Co2+ and Ni2+ reaching 31.12, 21.11 and 16.66 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption behaviour is consistent with the Langmuir, pseudo-second-order kinetics and particle diffusion model, indicating that the adsorption process is mainly spontaneous, monolayer chemical adsorption, and the adsorption rate is mainly controlled by internal particle diffusion. SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR and XPS analyses suggest that the adsorption mechanism includes surface physical adsorption, ion exchange, functional group complexation, electrostatic attraction and precipitation. The fixed bed column experiment shows that OMN@SA can effectively remove metal ions Cu2+, demonstrating excellent stability, safety and good regenerability. This study paves a new direction for the design of efficient and sustainable materials for heavy metal adsorption. More importantly, as marine primordial materials, OMN and DSS have strong technical and economic feasibility for future use in in-situ fixation of metal ions in seafloor sediments and restoration of the original seabed environment.

Novel pretreatment with hydrogen peroxide enhanced microwave biochar for heavy metals adsorption: Characterization and adsorption performance

Hydrogen peroxide (HP) was used to pretreat wheat straw (WS) for microwave biochar production at 100-600 W, the physicochemical properties of pretreated WS and biochar products as well as heavy metals adsorption performance were investigated. Results showed that HP enhanced specific surface area (SSA) and pore volume (PV) of WS, and the largest SSA (190.35 m2 g-1) and PV (0.1493 cm3 g-1) of biochar were obtained at microwave powers of 600 W (HPWS600) and 500 W (HPWS500), respectively. HPWS500 showed maximum adsorption capacities, which were 57.56, 190.21, and 65.16 mg g-1 for Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+, respectively. Solution pH values and cation concentrations exhibited significant effects on adsorption capacities of biochar. The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models fitted better for metal adsorption process. The FTIR results suggested that chemisorption mechanisms including precipitation with carbonate and complexation with oxygen-containing functional groups might be predominant adsorption mechanisms. These results suggest that HP pretreatment has excellent potential for biochar production.

Remediation of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in polluted waters with calcium thioglycolate-modified straw biochar

The pollution of water bodies by heavy metals (HMs) such as Pb(II) and Cd(II) poses a serious environmental risk. Herein, rice straw biochar (RBC) modified with calcium thioglycolate was used to remove Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption performance of the modified biochar was investigated via adsorption kinetics and isotherm model fitting. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to elucidate the modification and adsorption mechanisms. The results showed that the modification process loaded sulfur-containing functional groups, calcium carbonate, and calcium oxalate crystals on the biochar surface, considerably enhancing its complexation performance and ion-exchange capacity. The equilibrium adsorption amounts for Pb(II) and Cd(II) reached 124.92 and 65.44 mg g-1 in unary systems, respectively; they reached 121.34 and 39.43 mg g-1 in a binary Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. Moreover, the optimal adsorption conditions were as follows: pH = 6, temperature = 25 °C, dosage = 0.8 g L-1, and contact time = 2 h. In the binary Pb(II) and Cd(II) system, the adsorption process obeyed the Langmuir competitive adsorption model, which means that one adsorption site on the modified biochar was effective for only one heavy-metal ion, and the modified biochar was more selective for Pb(II) than for Cd(II). The adsorption mechanism, which was dominated by chemisorption, mainly involved complexation, precipitation, ion exchange, and cation-π interactions. Meanwhile, adsorption and desorption experiments indicated that the modified biochar exhibited satisfactory recycling performance, demonstrating its feasibility as an inexpensive and efficient heavy-metal adsorbent for polluted water.

Revealing the Adverse Impact of Additive Carbon Material on Microorganisms and Its Implications for Biogas Yields: A Critical Review

Biochar could be a brilliant additive supporting the anaerobic fermentation process. However, it should be taken into account that in some cases it could also be harmful to microorganisms responsible for biogas production. The negative impact of carbon materials could be a result of an overdose of biochar, high biochar pH, increased arsenic mobility in the methane fermentation solution caused by the carbon material, and low porosity of some carbon materials for microorganisms. Moreover, when biochar is affected by an anaerobic digest solution, it could reduce the biodiversity of microorganisms. The purpose of the article is not to reject the idea of biochar additives to increase the efficiency of biogas production, but to draw attention to the properties and ways of adding these materials that could reduce biogas production. These findings have practical relevance for organizations seeking to implement such systems in industrial or local-scale biogas plants and provide valuable insights for future research. Needless to say, this study will also support the implementation of biogas technologies and waste management in implementing the idea of a circular economy, further emphasizing the significance of the research.

A new attempt to control volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollution - Modification technology of biomass for adsorption of VOCs gas

The detrimental impact of volatile organic compounds on the surroundings is widely acknowledged, and effective solutions must be sought to mitigate their pollution. Adsorption treatment is a cost-effective, energy-saving, and flexible solution that has gained popularity. Biomass is an inexpensive, naturally porous material with exceptional adsorbent properties. This article examines current research on volatile organic compounds adsorption using biomass, including the composition of these compounds and the physical (van der Waals) and chemical mechanisms (Chemical bonding) by which porous materials adsorb them. Specifically, the strategic modification of the surface chemical functional groups and pore structure is explored to facilitate optimal adsorption, including pyrolysis, activation, heteroatom doping and other methods. It is worth noting that biomass adsorbents are emerging as a highly promising strategy for green treatment of volatile organic compounds pollution in the future. Overall, the findings signify that biomass modification represents a viable and competent approach for eliminating volatile organic compounds from the environment.

A review on adsorption of heavy metals from wastewater using carbon nanotube and graphene-based nanomaterials

The rampant rise in world population, industrialization, and urbanization expedite the contamination of water sources. The presence of the non-biodegradable character of heavy metals in waterways badly affects the ecological balance. In this modern era, the unavailability of getting clear water as well as the downturn in water quality is a major concern. Therefore, the effective removal of heavy metals has become much more important than before. In recent years, the attention to better wastewater remediation was directed towards adsorption techniques with novel adsorbents such as carbon nanomaterials. This review paper primarily emphasizes the fundamental concepts, structures, and unique surface properties of novel adsorbents, the harmful effects of various heavy metals, and the adsorption mechanism. This review will give an insight into the current status of research in the realm of sustainable wastewater treatment, applications of carbon nanomaterials, different types of functionalized carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxide, and their adsorption capacity. The importance of MD simulations and density functional theory (DFT) in the elimination of heavy metals from aqueous media is also discussed. In addition to that, the effect of factors on heavy metal adsorption such as electric field and pressure is addressed.

Microwave-assisted one-pot preparation of magnetic cactus-derived hydrochar for efficient removal of lead(Ⅱ) and phenol from water: Performance and mechanism exploration

A novel magnetic hydrochar derived from cactus cladode (MW-MHC) was successfully synthesized through one-pot microwave-assisted process for efficiently removing lead(Pb)(Ⅱ) and phenol. From batch adsorption experiments, MW-MHC possessed the highest uptake amounts for Pb(Ⅱ) and phenol of 139.34 and 175.32 mg/g within 20 and 60 min, respectively. Moreover, the removal of Pb(Ⅱ) and phenol by MW-MHC remained essentially stable under the interference of different co-existing cations, presenting the excellent adaptability of MW-MHC. After three cycles of regeneration experiments, MW-MHC still had preferable adsorption performance and could be easily recycled, indicating its excellent reusability. Significantly, the uptake mechanisms of Pb(Ⅱ) on MW-MHC were regarded as chemical complexation, pore filling, precipitation, and electrostatic attraction. Meanwhile, the phenol uptake might be dominated by π-π interaction and hydrogen bonding. The above consequences revealed that MW-MHC with high removal performance was a promising adsorbent for remediating wastewater containing heavy metals and organics.

Effects of incorporating Mn into goethite on adsorption of dissolved organic matter and potentially toxic elements in soil: Isotherms, kinetics, and mechanisms

Goethite is ubiquitous in the environment and plays key role in preserving dissolved organic matter (DOM) and deactivating potentially toxic elements (PTEs) by adsorbing DOM and PTEs. Various non-Fe metals are usually incorporated into natural goethite, substituting Fe in the goethite structure, which dramatically influence the physico-chemical properties and adsorption behavior of the goethite. In the present study, adsorption of DOM and Pb(II) on Mn-substituted goethite samples was investigated. The results displayed that the specific surface area (SSA) of mineral samples increased by 67.6% as the incorporation of Mn for Fe, from 25.71 m2 g-1 for pure goethite to 43.09 m2 g-1for Mn-goethite. Besides, the Mn substitution caused more hydroxyl groups and relatively fewer positive charges on mineral surface, and Mn in the Mn-goethite samples was predominantly present as Mn(III). The amount of DOM adsorbed to per unit mass of goethite was increased as Mn content increased, which was attributed to Mn incorporation increasing the SSA of mineral samples. However, the SSA-normalized absorption capacity for goethite to DOM was decreased by Mn because Mn substitution decreased the number of positive charges of mineral samples, which weakened the electrostatic attraction between DOM and the minerals. The amount of Pb(II) adsorbed to per unit mass of goethite was increased by Mn substitution, and the amount of Pb(II) adsorbed to per unit SSA of goethite increased as the amount of Mn substitution increased, indicating that the increased capacity for adsorbing Pb was not only caused by the SSA increasing but also by there were more surface hydroxyl groups on the Mn-goethite than pure goethite and Pb(II) preferentially adsorbed to Mn sites on the Mn-goethite. The present study results showed that Mn-goethite could be used to sequester DOM and remediate soil contaminated with PTEs because Mn-goethite has a high adsorption capacity and is environmentally benign.

Activated Carbon and Clay Pellets Coated with Hydroxyapatite for Heavy Metal Removal: Characterization, Adsorption, and Regeneration

In the present work, activated-carbon-containing pellets were preparedby direct chemical activation of sawdust, using clays as a binder. The obtained pellets (ACC) were coated with hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles (ACC-HAp) to improve adsorption towards Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Ni(II). The pellets were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and with a gas sorptometer. The effect of pH, contact time, and initial concentration on adsorption performance was investigated. Additionally, desorption studies were performed, and the regeneration influence on compressive strength and repeated Pb(II) adsorption was investigated. The results showed that, after coating ACC pellets with HAp nanoparticles, the adsorption capacity increased for all applied heavy metal ions. Pb(II) was adsorbed the most, and the best results were achieved at pH 6. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherm of Pb(II) is better fitted to the Langmuir model, showing the maximum adsorption capacity of 56 and 47 mg/g by ACC-HAp and ACC pellets, respectively. The desorption efficiency of Pb(II)-loaded ACC-HAp pellets increased by lowering the pH of the acid, resulting in the dissolution of the HAp coating. The best desorption results were achieved with HCl at pH 1 and 1.5. Therefore, the regeneration procedure consisted of desorption, rinsing with distilled water, and re-coating with HAp nanoparticles. After the regeneration process, the Pb(II) adsorption was not affected. However, the desorption stage within the regeneration process decreased the compressive strength of the pellets.

Biological and green remediation of heavy metal contaminated water and soils: A state-of-the-art review

Contamination of the natural ecosystem by heavy metals, organic pollutants, and hazardous waste severely impacts on health and survival of humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms. Diverse chemical and physical treatments are employed in many countries, however, the acceptance of these treatments are usually poor because of taking longer time, high cost, and ineffectiveness in contaminated areas with a very high level of metal contents. Bioremediation is an eco-friendly and efficient method of reclaiming contaminated soils and waters with heavy metals through biological mechanisms using potential microorganisms and plant species. Considering the high efficacy, low cost, and abundant availability of biological materials, particularly bacteria, algae, yeasts, and fungi, either in natural or genetically engineered (GE) form, bioremediation is receiving high attention for heavy metal removal. This report comprehensively reviews and critically discusses the biological and green remediation tactics, contemporary technological advances, and their principal applications either in-situ or ex-situ for the remediation of heavy metal contamination in soil and water. A modified PRISMA review protocol is adapted to critically assess the existing research gaps in heavy metals remediation using green and biological drivers. This study pioneers a schematic illustration of the underlying mechanisms of heavy metal bioremediation. Precisely, it pinpoints the research bottleneck during its real-world application as a low-cost and sustainable technology.

Adsorption of cationic dye on nanostructured biocarbons: kinetic and thermodynamic study

Nanostructured bio-adsorbents were prepared by physical or chemical activation of the residue of supercritical extraction of raspberry seed. Their physicochemical properties were determined by elemental analysis, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption, Boehm titration and scanning electron microscopy. The biocarbon obtained as a result of physical activation of the precursor showed basic character of the surface and its SBET was 700 m2/g. The chemical activation of the residue of supercritical extraction of raspberry seed with potassium carbonate favored generation of acidic functional groups and SBET of this biocarbon was 1177 m2/g. The nanostructured biocarbons were used for removal of Rhodamine B from its aqueous solutions. The process was best described by the Langmuir isotherm and the maximum capacity of the monolayer was 181.82 mg/g and 277.83 mg/g for the physically and chemically activated samples, respectively. The adsorption energy obtained from the Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm indicated that the process observed was physisorption, while the kinetics of the process was best described by the pseudo-second-order model. The negative values of Gibbs free energy indicated the spontaneous character of the process. For the chemically activated sample, the highest sorption capacities toward Rhodamine B were obtained in an acidic environment, while for the physically activated sample—in a basic environment. The yield of desorption decreased for the media: distilled water > hydrochloric acid > acetic acid, which means that Rhodamine B molecules were weakly bound to the biocarbon surface.
