Utilization of biochar for remediation of heavy metals in aqueous environments: A review and bibliometric analysis

Biochar usage for removing heavy metals from aqueous environments has emerged as a promising research area with significant environmental and economic benefits. Using the PICO approach, the research question aimed to explore using biochar to remove heavy metals from aqueous media. We merged the data from Scopus and the Web of Science Core Collection databases to acquire a comprehensive perspective of the subject. The PRISMA guidelines were applied to establish the search parameters, identify the appropriate articles, and collect the bibliographic information from the publications between 2010 and 2022. The bibliometric analysis showed that biochar-based heavy metal remediation is a research field with increasing scholarly attention. The removal of Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) was the most studied among the heavy metals. We identified five main clusters centered on adsorption, water treatment, adsorption models, analytical techniques, and hydrothermal carbonization by performing keyword co-occurrence analysis. Trending topics include biochar reusability, modification, acid mine drainage (AMD), wastewater treatment, and hydrochar. The reutilization of heavy metal-loaded spent biochar includes transforming it into electrodes for supercapacitors or stable catalyst materials. This study provides a comprehensive overview of biochar-based heavy metal remediation in aquatic environments and highlights knowledge gaps and future research directions.

Sorptive removal of cadmium using the attapulgite modified by the combination of calcination and iron

Sorptive removal of cadmium (Cd) from the aqueous solutions using the easily available natural materials is an attractive method. However, the adsorption efficiencies of these materials, such as clays, are typically low. Besides, they are generally in relatively low stability and renewability, which restrict their application. Thus, modification of these materials to enhance their performance on Cd removal has gained growing attentions. Herein, the integration of calcination and ferric chloride (FeCl3) was used to modify a typical clay, i.e., attapulgite, to increase the adsorption sites, and thus to develop a robust adsorbent for Cd. Under the optimum conditions for attapulgite modification (i.e., the mass ratio of FeCl3 to attapulgite was 1:2, calcination temperature was 350 °C, and calcination time was 1.5 h) and Cd adsorption (i.e., initial pH of 6.0, adsorption temperature of 25 °C, and adsorbent dosage of 1.0 g/L), the maximum adsorption capacity of the modified attapulgite toward Cd was 149.9 mg/g. Mechanisms of surface complexation and electrostatic attraction were involved in the efficient removal of Cd. The adsorption of Cd increased with pH due to the increased electrostatic attraction. Metal cations inhibited the Cd adsorption through competing with the adsorption sites. The changes of Gibbs-free energy during the adsorption of Cd were lower than zero and decreased with temperature, suggesting the process was spontaneous and endothermic. The removal efficiency of Cd after 5 times of recycle maintained at 82% of that of the raw modified attapulgite demonstrated the stability of the adsorbent. These results suggested that the modified attapulgite is robust for Cd removal and is promising for land application.

Recent advances in sulfidized nanoscale zero-valent iron materials for environmental remediation and challenges

Over the past decade, sulfidized nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) has been developed as a promising tool for the remediation of contaminated soil, sediment, and water. Although most studies have focused on applying S-nZVI for clean-up purposes, there is still a lack of systematic summary and discussion from its synthesis, application, to toxicity assessment. This review firstly summarized and compared the properties of S-nZVI synthesized from one-step and two-step synthesis methods, and the modification protocols for obtaining better stability and reactivity. In the context of environmental remediation, this review outlined an update on the latest development of S-nZVI for removal of heavy metals, organic pollutants, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and also discussed the underlying removal mechanisms. Environmental factors affecting the remediation performance of S-nZVI (e.g., humic acid, coexisting ions, S/Fe molar ratio, pH, and oxygen condition) were highlighted. Besides, the application potential of S-nZVI in advanced oxidation processes (AOP), especially in activating persulfate, was also evaluated. The toxicity impacts of S-nZVI on the environmental microorganism were described. Finally, the future challenges and remaining restrains to be resolved for better applicability of S-nZVI are also proposed. This review could provide guidance for the environmental remediation with S-nZVI-based technology from theoretical basis and practical perspectives.
