Removal of food dyes using biological materials via adsorption: A review

It is alarming that synthetic food dyes (FD) are widely used in various industries and that these facilities discharge their wastewater into the environment without treating it. FDs mixed into industrial wastewater pose a threat to the environment and human health. Therefore, removing FDs from wastewater is very important. This review explores the burgeoning field of FD removal from wastewater through adsorption using biological materials (BMs). By synthesizing a wealth of research findings, this comprehensive review elucidates the diverse array of BMs employed, ranging from algae and fungi to agricultural residues and microbial biomass. Furthermore, this review investigates challenges in practical applications, such as process optimization and scalability, offering insights into bridging the gap between laboratory successes and real-world implementations. Harnessing the remarkable adsorptive potential of BMs, this review presents a roadmap toward transformative solutions for FD removal, promising cleaner and safer production practices in the food and beverage industry.

Highly Porous Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube-Foam Composite for Batch Adsorption Performances of Dyes

Treatment of dye pollutants prior to their release into the environment remains a formidable challenge, persisting as a longstanding issue. This study focuses on the development of a multiwalled carbon nanotube-foam (MWCNT-foam) composite through low-temperature chemical fusion (LTFC), resulting in a composite with a remarkably high accessible surface area (>475 m2 g-1). The MWCNT-foam composite exhibits a three-dimensional porous structure and demonstrates a notable affinity for organic dye adsorption. The efficacy of this composite was evaluated against various cationic dyes such as Methylene blue (MB) and Crystal Violet (CV) as well as anionic dyes such as Congo red (CR) and Eriochrome black T (EB), and the composite showed removal rates exceeding 99%. Furthermore, the study delved into the impact of the initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, kinetics, and other factors on the performance of the MWCNT-foam composite. The adsorption process achieved equilibrium in 10 min and strongly correlated with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of MWCNT-foam for MB, CV, CR, and EB was found to be 168.63, 147.49, 99.50, and 93.11 mg g-1, respectively. In order to showcase the potential of this material for continuous adsorption, a specialized cartridge was designed and employed to treat dye solutions, demonstrating the feasibility of continuous mode adsorption.

Monte Carlo, molecular dynamic, and experimental studies of the removal of malachite green using g-C3N4/ZnO/Chitosan nanocomposite in the presence of a deep eutectic solvent

Deep-eutectic solvents (DES) have emerged as promising candidates for preparing nanocomposites. In this study, a DES-based graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)/ZnO/Chitosan (Ch) nanocomposite was synthesized to remove malachite green (MG) dye from water. The DES was prepared by mixing and heating citric acid as a hydrogen bond acceptor and lactic acid as a hydrogen bond donor. This is the first report of the removal of MG using DES-based nanocomposites. Experiments on kinetics and isothermal adsorption were conducted to systematically explore the adsorption performances of nanocomposite toward dye. At 25 °C, the highest adsorption performance was obtained with alkaline media (>90 % removal). The greatest adsorption capacity (qm) was 59.52 mg g-1 at conditions (30 mg L-1 MG solution, pH 9, 3 mg nanocomposite per 10 mL of MG solution, 25 °C, 150 rpm, and 150 min) based on the calculation from the best-fitting isotherm model (Langmuir). The adsorption process was most appropriately kinetically described by the PSO model. The Monte Carlo (MC) and molecular dynamic (MC) results are correlated with experimental findings to validate the theoretical predictions and enhance the overall understanding of the adsorption process. Electronic structure calculations reveal the nature of interactions, including hydrogen bonding and electrostatic forces, between the nanocomposite and MG molecules.

Efficacy of activated carbon using Salvadora persica stem for remediation of potentially toxic dyes from aqueous solution

Potentially toxic dyes are introduced mainly to rivers through industrial effluents which have a high risk to human health and aquatic life. Activated carbon (AC) from the stem of Salvadora persica was synthesised to take off toxic industrial dyes from an aqueous solution. KOH was used as the activating agent throughout the preparation process for the AC. The morphology and composition of the prepared AC were studied by various analytical methods. From the overall results, it was found that the prepared AC is highly porous and thermal stability gained around 800 ℃. At room temperature, remediation of the dyes (cationic dye, methyl red and anionic dye, methylene blue) using the adsorption method was carried out to ascertain the impact of time and the quantity of AC on methylene blue (MB) and methyl red (MR) removal. During the initial 60 min, equilibrium was attained for the optimum dye concentration (200 mg/L). The data for adsorption on the AC obtained at equilibrium were examined by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Both the isotherms accurately predicted the data, with regression values of 0.99 for MR and 0.90 for MB, respectively. The equilibrium adsorption data was also analysed by kinetic models. The adsorption data well fitted in 2nd order kinetic model. The results of MB and MR adsorption from solutions have demonstrated that the stem of Salvadora persica is one of the cheap and more eco-friendly options for remediation of toxic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Advances and future perspectives of water defluoridation by adsorption technology: A review

Fluoride contamination in water sources poses a significant challenge to human health and the environment. In recent years, adsorption technology has emerged as a promising approach for water defluoridation due to its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This review article comprehensively explores the advances in water defluoridation through adsorption processes. Various adsorbents, including natural and synthetic materials, have been investigated for their efficacy in removing fluoride ions from water. The mechanisms underlying adsorption interactions are elucidated, shedding light on the factors influencing defluoridation efficiency. Moreover, the review outlines the current state of technology, highlighting successful case studies and field applications. Future perspectives in the field of water defluoridation by adsorption are discussed, emphasizing the need for sustainable and scalable solutions. The integration of novel materials, process optimization, and the development of hybrid technologies are proposed as pathways to address existing challenges and enhance the overall efficacy of water defluoridation. This comprehensive assessment of the advances and future directions in adsorption-based water defluoridation provides valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working towards ensuring safe and accessible drinking water for all.

Nano-based remediation strategies for micro and nanoplastic pollution

Due to rapid urbanization, there have been continuous environmental threats from different pollutants, especially from microplastics. Plastic products rapidly proliferate significantly contributing to the occurrence of micro-plastics, which poses a significant environmental risk. These microplastics originated from diverse sources and are characterized by their persistent and widespread occurrence; human health and the entire ecosystem are adversely affected by them. The removal of microplastics not only requires innovative technologies but also efficient materials capable of effectively eliminating them from our environment. The progress made so far has highlighted the advantages of utilizing the dimensional and structural properties of nanomaterials to increase the effectiveness of existing methods for micro-plastic treatment, aiming for a more sustainable approach to their removal. In the current review, we demonstrate a thorough overview of the sources, occurrences, and potential harmful effects of microplastics, followed by a further discussion of promising technologies used for their removal. An in-depth examination of both advantages and a few limitations of all these given technologies, including physical, chemical, and biological approaches, has been discussed. Additionally, the review explores the use of nanomaterials as an effective means to overcome obstacles and improve the efficiency of microplastic elimination methods. n conclusion, this review addresses, current challenges in this field and outlines the future perspectives for further research in this domain.

Biogenic mediated green synthesis of NiO nanoparticles for adsorptive removal of lead from aqueous solution

The spread of heavy metal in water bodies, particularly lead (Pb), has occurred as a global threat to human existence. In this study, NiO nanoparticles (NPs) was prepared by coprecipitation approach using Hagenia abyssinica plant extract mediated as a reducing and template agent for the removal of Pb from aqueous solution. X-ray crystallographic diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques were employed for the characterization of as prepared NiO NPs. The efficacy of adsorbent was evaluated on the removal of Pb2+ by varying the adsorptive parameters such as pH, Bio-NiO amount, interaction time, and Pb2+ concentration. The adsorption was 99.99% at pH, 0.06 g of NiO NPs dose, 60 mg L-1 concentrations of Pb2+ within 80 min contact time. The higher removal efficiency is could be due to higher surface area (151 m2g-1). The adsorption process was best fitted with Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic models, implying that it was chemical adsorption on the heterogeneous surface. The adsorption intensity (n) was found to be 1/n < 1 (0.47) indicating adsorption of Pb2+ on the surface of Bio-NiO NPs was favorable with a maximum adsorption capacity 60.13 mg g-1. The reusability studies confirmed that the synthesized bio-NiO NPs were an effective adsorbent for removing Pb2+ from aqueous solution up to five cycles.

Inclusive study of peanut shells derived activated carbon as an adsorbent for removal of lead and methylene blue from water

Green and efficient agro-waste-based activated carbon has been prepared utilizing peanut shells for adsorptive elimination of an industrial dye, methylene blue, and lead from polluted water. The carbonaceous biomass obtained from peanut shells was chemically activated using either NaOH, ZnCl2, or steam and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption and desorption studies. The adsorption process was optimal for methylene blue at alkaline pH, while pH 4.5 was optimal for Pb (II) adsorption. The adsorption takes place through pseudo-second-order kinetic, and the rate-governing step of the adsorption procedure are intraparticle diffusion and film diffusion. Furthermore, the thermodynamics of the adsorption process has been studied, and the obtained Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) values are negative (- 35.90 to - 43.59 kJ mol-1) indicating the spontaneous adsorption of the investigated pollutants on the prepared activated carbon. As per the correlation coefficient, the obtained results were best fit by the Langmuir isotherm with maximum adsorption capacity of 303.03 mg g-1 for methylene blue and 130.89 mg g-1 for Pb (II). The activated carbon successfully removed methylene blue and Pb (II) with %removal exceeding 95%. The mechanisms of interaction of Pb (II) with the activated carbon is a combination of electrostatic interaction and ion exchange, while methylene blue interacts with the activated carbon via π-π interaction, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interaction. Thus, the prepared activated carbon has been employed to decontaminate wastewater and groundwater samples. The developed agro-waste-based activated carbon is a promising, cost-efficient, green, and accessible tool for water remediation.

Cadmium pollution exacerbated by drought: Insights from the nanoscale interaction at the clay mineral surface

Drought is a global environmental problem, while the effect of drought-induced unsaturation on the fate of heavy metal ions is still poorly understood, particularly the lack of mechanistic information at the molecular level. This study used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate nanoscale interactions at the montmorillonite surface under different moisture conditions. Compared to the saturated condition, drought increased the amounts and strength of Cd2+ ions adsorbed on the montmorillonite (MMT) surface while decreased the diffusivity, which was especially obvious in extreme drought conditions (θv=21%-7%). This is closely related to the compressed electric double layer, overcompensation of surface charge, and increased ion pair interactions, resulting from the confinement of water films under drought stress. Further analysis showed that the decrease of hydration effect was responsible for the exacerbated cadmium pollution. Therefore, this study may break the stereotypes about the interactions between heavy metal ions and soil minerals. The results suggest that water management (e.g., irrigation) may be prioritized before beginning heavy metal remediation.

Adsorption and biodegradation of the azo dye methyl orange using Ralstonia pickettii immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-alginate-hectorite beads (BHec-RP)

Biological methods are widely used to treat dye waste, particularly methyl orange (MO) dye. The importance of MO degradation stems from its classification as a toxic dye. Within the scope of this research, successful bio-decolorization of MO was achieved through the use of Ralstonia pickettii bacteria immobilized in a PVA-alginate-hectorite matrix (BHec-RP). The optimum conditions for the degradation were observed at a composition of PVA (10%), hectorite (1%), static incubation, 40 °C, and pH 7. Subsequently, the adsorption kinetics of BHec-RP (dead cells) as well as the degradation kinetics of BHec-RP (live cells) and MO using free R. pickettii cells were evaluated. The decolorization of MO using BHec-RP (dead cells) is an adsorption process following pseudo-first-order kinetics (0.6918 mg g-1 beads) and occurs in a monolayer or physical process. Meanwhile, the adoption of BHec-RP (live cells) and free R. pickettii cells shows a degradation process under pseudo-first-order kinetics, with the highest rates at an initial MO concentration of 50 mg L-1 being 0.025 mg L-1 h-1 and 0.015 mg L-1 h-1, respectively. These results show that the immobilization system is superior compared to free R. pickettii cells. Furthermore, the degradation process shows the inclusion of several enzymes, such as azoreductase, NADH-DCIP reductase, and laccase, presumed to be included in the fragmentation of molecules. This results in five fragments based on LC-QTOF/MS analysis, with m/z values of 267.12; 189.09; 179.07; 169.09; and 165.05.

A critical and comprehensive review of the current status of 17β-estradiol hormone remediation through adsorption technology

Even at low concentrations, steroid hormones pose a significant threat to ecosystem health and are classified as micropollutants. Among these, 17β-estradiol (molecular formula: C18H24O2; pKa = 10.46; Log Kow = 4.01; solubility in water = 3.90 mg L-1 at 27 °C; molecular weight: 272.4 g mol-1) is extensively studied as an endocrine disruptor due to its release through natural pathways and widespread use in conventional medicine. 17β-estradiol (E2) is emitted by various sources, such as animal and human excretions, hospital and veterinary clinic effluents, and treatment plants. In aquatic biota, it can cause issues ranging from the feminization of males to inhibiting plant growth. This review aims to identify technologies for remediating E2 in water, revealing that materials like graphene oxides, nanocomposites, and carbonaceous materials are commonly used for adsorption. The pH of the medium, especially in acidic to neutral conditions, affects efficiency, and ambient temperature (298 K) supports the process. The Langmuir and Freundlich models aptly describe isothermal studies, with interactions being of a low-energy, physical nature. Adsorption faces limitations when other ions coexist in the solution. Hybrid treatments exhibit high removal efficiency. To mitigate global E2 pollution, establishing national and international standards with detailed guidelines for advanced treatment systems is crucial. Despite significant advancements in optimizing technologies by the scientific community, there remains a considerable gap in their societal application, primarily due to economic and sustainable factors. Therefore, further studies are necessary, including conducting batch experiments with these adsorbents for large-scale treatment along with economic analyses of the production process.

Performance optimization for Pb(II) -containing wastewater treatment in constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell triggered by biomass dosage and Pb(II) level

Three identical sets of constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs) fabricated with biomass carbon source addition were constructed and underwent the short- and long-term experiments. For this, the efficacy of biomass dosage and Pb(II) concentration towards Pb(II) removal and concurrent bioelectricity production of CW-MFCs were systematically explored. From the perspective of integrated capabilities and economic benefits, the solid biomass carbon sources equivalent to 500 mg/L COD was regarded as the optimal dosage, and the corresponding device was labeled as CW-MFC-2. For the short-term experiment, the closed-circuit CW-MFC-2 produced maximum output voltages and power densities in a range of 386-657 mV and 1.55 × 103-6.31 × 103 mW/m2 with the increasing Pb(II) level, respectively. Also, Pb(II) removal up to 94.4-99.6% was obtained in CW-MFC-2. With respect to long-term experiment, Pb(II) removal, the maximum output voltage, and power density of CW-MFC-2 ranged from 98.7 to 99.2%, 322 to 387 mV, and 3.28 × 102 to 2.26 × 103 mW/m2 upon 200 mg/L Pb(II) level, respectively. The migration results confirmed the potential of substrate and biomass for Pb(II) adsorption and fixation. For the cathode, Pb(II) was fixed and removed via binding to O. This study enlarges our knowledge of effective modulation of CW-MFCs for the treatment of high-level Pb(II)-containing wastewater and bioelectricity generation via adopting desirable biomass dosage.

Sunlight mediated removal of toxic pollutants from Yamuna wastewater using efficient nano TeO2-ZnO nanocomposites

We have utilised our TeO2-ZnO nanocomposites for Yamuna wastewater treatment in natural sunlight wherein the sampling site was Nigam Bodh Ghat, Kashmere Gate, Delhi. In BET isotherm, TZ NCs exhibited type IV isotherm forming a H3 like hysteric loop sustaining mesoporous characteristic with an increase in surface area, pore volume and pore diameter of 56.76 m2/g, 0.257 cc/g and 17.18 nm respectively, when compared to pristine ZnO NPs. Yamuna wastewater treatment was carried out using various concentrations of TZ NCs (range 0.1-0.3 g/500 mL) under natural sunlight. Post-treatment, all the physicochemical parameters such as DO, BOD, COD, Nitrates, Ammonia and Phenolic contents were found to be reduced to 10 times bringing Yamuna water parameters within safe limits. Our TZ NCs have shown to have high selectivity for the removal of Chromium from water. Out of all the three concentrations 0.2 g/500 mL or 0.4 mg/mL is the most optimum concentration of TZ NCs for complete Yamuna wastewater treatment. Also, the bacterial culture present in Yamuna water was killed by 90% using TZ having MIC of 0.1 mg/mL. The antibiofilm activity of TZ against K.pneumoniae MTCC 109 was also checked using Congo Red Agar Assay. The presence of heavy metals, their corresponding degradation and leaching studies were analysed using ICP-OES. TZ NCs showed a very minimal leaching rate of Zinc into the water, proving no toxicity associated with these nanocomposites. Further, to observe the safe disposal of TZ NCs into the soil, TZ NCs were utilised for ecotoxicity studies.

Toxic effects of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and tetracycline (TC) on the growth and development of Triticum aestivum: A meta-analysis

The environmental issue of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and tetracycline (TC) contamination in cereal crops has become a growing concern worldwide. An in-depth understanding of this issue would be of importance to promote effective management strategies for heavy metals and antibiotics worldwide. The present study was conducted to assess the toxic effects of heavy metals (Cd, Pb) and antibiotics (TC) on Triticum aestivum (T. aestivum, common wheat) based on studies conducted in the past 22 years. Data pertaining to the growth and development of T. aestivum were extracted and analyzed from 89 publications spanning from 2000 to 2022. Our results showed that Pb, Cd and TC significantly reduced growth and development by 11 %, 9 %, and 5 %, respectively. Additionally, significant accumulation of Cd (42 %) and Pb (17 %) was observed in T. aestivum samples, although there was little change in TC accumulation, which showed limited absorption, accumulation, and translocation of TC in wheat plants. Pb had the greatest impact on the yield of T. aestivum, followed by Cd, while TC had no apparent effect. Furthermore, exposure to Cd, Pb and TC reduced the photosynthetic rate due to chlorophyll reduction, with Cd having the most pronounced effect (58 %), followed by Pb (37 %) and TC (8 %). Cd exposure also significantly enhanced gaseous exchange (37 %) compared to TC and Pb, which reduced gaseous exchange by 4 % and 10 %, respectively. However, the treatments with TC (>50-100 mgL-1), Pb (>1000-2000 mg L-1) and Cd (>500-1000 mg L-1) increased the defense system of T. aestivum samples by 38 %, 15 %, and 11 %, respectively. The obtained findings have significant implications for risk assessment, pollution prevention, and remediation strategies to address soil contamination from Pb, Cd and TC in farmland.
