Abstract
The pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass with acid generates phenolic and furanyl compounds that function as toxins by inhibiting microbial growth and metabolism. Therefore, it is necessary to detoxify acid-pretreated lignocellulosic biomass for better utilization. Among the various detoxification methods that are available, biodetoxification offers advantages that include mild reaction conditions and low energy consumption. In this study, a newly isolated Rhodococcus aetherivorans strain, N1, was found to effectively degrade various lignin-derived aromatic compounds, such as p-coumarate, ferulate, syringaldehyde, furfural, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Furthermore, the metabolic pathway and genes responsible for this degradation were also identified. In addition, the overexpression of a demethylase (DesA) and 3,4-dioxygenase (DesZ) in strain N1 generated a recombinant strain, N1-S, which showed an enhanced ability to degrade syringaldehyde and 80.5% furfural, 50.7% 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, and 71.5% phenolic compounds in corn cob hydrolysate. The resulting detoxified hydrolysate was used directly as a feedstock for succinate production by Escherichia coli suc260. This afforded 35.3 g/l succinate, which was 6.5 times greater than the concentration afforded when nondetoxified hydrolysate was used. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate that strain N1-S is a valuable microbe for the biodetoxification of lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract
A genome of Rhodococcus rhodochrous IEGM 1362 was sequenced and annotated. This strain can transform monoterpene alcohol (-)-isopulegol with the formation of two novel pharmacologically promising metabolites. Nine genes encoding cytochrome P450, presumably involved in (-)-isopulegol transformation, were found in the genome of R. rhodochrous IEGM 1362. Primers and PCR conditions for their detection were selected. The obtained data can be used for the further investigation of genes encoding enzymes involved in monoterpene biotransformation.

Abstract
Phenols are highly toxic chemicals that are extensively used in industry and produce large amounts of emissions. Notably, phenols released into the soil are highly persistent, causing long-term harm to human health and the environment. In this study, a gram-positive, aerobic, and rod-shaped bacterial strain, Z13T, with efficient phenol degradation ability, was isolated from the soil of sugarcane fields. Based on the physiological properties and genomic features, strain Z13T is considered as a novel species of the genus Rhodococcus, for which the name Rhodococcus sacchari sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Z13T (= CCTCC AB 2022327T = JCM 35797T). This strain can use phenol as its sole carbon source. Z13T was able to completely degrade 1200 mg/L phenol within 20 h; the maximum specific growth rate was μmax = 0.93174 h-1, and the maximum specific degradation rate was qmax = 0.47405 h-1. Based on whole-genome sequencing and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis, strain Z13T contains a series of phenol degradation genes, including dmpP, CatA, dmpB, pcaG, and pcaH, and can metabolize aromatic compounds. Moreover, the potential of strain Z13T for soil remediation was investigated by introducing Z13T into simulated phenol-contaminated soil, and the soil microbial diversity was analyzed. The results showed that 100% of the phenol in the soil was removed within 7.5 d. Furthermore, microbial diversity analysis revealed an increase in the relative species richness of Oceanobacillus, Chungangia, and Bacillus.

Abstract
Given their multifaceted roles, carotenoids have garnered significant scientific interest, resulting in a comprehensive and intricate body of literature that occasionally presents conflicting findings concerning the proper characterization, quantification, and bioavailability of these compounds. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that the pursuit of novel carotenoids remains a crucial endeavor, as their diverse properties, functionalities and potential health benefits make them invaluable natural resources in agri-food and health promotion through the diet. In this framework, particular attention is given to ketocarotenoids, viz., astaxanthin (one of them) stands out for its possible multifunctional role as an antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial agent. It has been widely explored in the market and utilized in different applications such as nutraceuticals, food additives, among others. Adonirubin and adonixanthin can be naturally found in plants and microorganisms. Due to the increasing significance of natural-based products and the remarkable opportunity to introduce these ketocarotenoids to the market, this review aims to provide an expert overview of the pros and cons associated with adonirubin and adonixanthin.

Abstract
Phenazines, including pyocyanin (PYO) and 1-hydroxyphenazine (1-HP) are extracellular secondary metabolites and multifunctional pigments of Pseudomonas aeruginosa responsible for its blue-green color. These versatile molecules are electrochemically active, involved in significant biological activities giving fitness to the host, but also recognized as antimicrobial and anticancer agents. Their wider application is still limited partly due to the cost of carbon substrate for production, which can be solved by the utilization of carbon from food waste within the biorefinery concept. In this study, a variety of food waste streams (banana peel, potato peel, potato washing, stale bread, yoghurt, processed meat, boiled eggs and mixed canteen waste) was used as sole nutrient source in submerged cultures of P. aeruginosa BK25H. Stale bread was identified as the most suitable substrate to support phenazine biopigments production and bacterial growth. This was further increased in 5-liter fermenter when on average 5.2 mg L-1 of PYO and 4.4 mg L-1 of 1-HP were purified after 24 h batch cultivations from the fermentation medium consisting of homogenized stale bread in tap water. Purified biopigments showed moderate antimicrobial activity, and showed different toxicity profiles, with PYO not being toxic against Caenorhabditis elegans, a free-living soil nematode up to 300 µg mL-1 and 1-HP showing lethal effects at 75 µg mL-1. Therefore, stale bread waste stream with minimal pretreatment should be considered as suitable biorefinery feedstock, as it can support the production of valuable biopigments such as phenazines.
