Abstract
Adipic acid (AA) is a key industrial dicarboxylic acid intermediate used in nylon manufacturing. Unfortunately, the traditional process technology is accompanied by serious environmental pollution. Given the growing demand for adipic acid and the desire to reduce its negative impact on the environment, considerable efforts have been devoted to developing more green and friendly routes. This Review is focused on the latest advances in the sustainable preparation of AA from biomass-based platform molecules, including 5-hydroxymethylfufural, glucose, γ-valerolactone, and phenolic compounds, through biocatalysis, chemocatalysis, and the combination of both. Additionally, the development of state-of-the-art catalysts for different catalytic systems systematically is discussed and summarized, as well as their reaction mechanisms. Finally, the prospects for all preparation routes are critically evaluated and key technical challenges in the development of green and sustainable processes for the manufacture of AA are highlighted. It is hoped that the green adipic acid synthesis pathways presented can provide insights and guidance for further research into other industrial processes for the production of nylon precursors in the future.

Abstract
Dye-sensitized photooxygenation reaction of bio-based double bond-containing substrates is proposed as sustainable functionalization of terpenes and terpenoids to transform them into polyoxygenated compounds to be employed for the synthesis of new bio-based polyesters. As proof of concept, citronellol 1 has been regioselectively converted into diol 4 using singlet oxygen (1O2), a traceless reagent that can be generated from air, visible light and zeolite supported-photosensitizer (Thionine-NaY). With our synthetic approach, diol 4 has been obtained in two-steps, with good regioselectivity, using green reagents such as light and air, and finally a solvent-free oxidation step. From this compound, a citronellol-based copolyester of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) has been synthesized and fully characterized. The results obtained evidence that the proposed copolymerization of PBS with the citronellol-based building blocks allows to obtain a more flexible and functionalizable material, by exploiting a largely available natural molecule modified through a green synthetic path.

Effect of Selected Thiols on Cross-Linking of Acrylated Epoxidized Soybean Oil and Properties of Resulting Polymers. Polymers (Basel) 2018; 10:polym10040439. Abstract
The effect of the chemical structure and functionality of three structurally different thiols on the cross-linking of acrylated epoxidized soybean oil and on the properties of the resulting polymers was investigated in this study. 1,3-Benzenedithiol, pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate), and an hexathiol synthesized from squalene were used in the cross-linking of acrylated epoxidized soybean oil by thiol⁻Michael addition reaction. The reactivity of thiols determined from calorimetric curves followed the order: 1,3-benzenedithiol > pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate) > hexathiolated squalene. Thermal and mechanical properties and the swelling in different solvents of the cross-linked polymers were studied. The cross-linked polymer obtained from 1,3-benzenedithiol showed the highest swelling values in chloroform and toluene. The cross-linked polymer with pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate) fragments showed the best mechanical performance (highest mechanical strength and Young's modulus) and thermal stability. The cross-linked polymers from hexathiolated squalene showed the highest glass transition temperature.

Abstract
We introduce two AB-type monomers able to undergo a facile catalyst-free photoinduced polycycloaddition of photocaged dienes, enabling rapid Diels-Alder ligations under UV-irradiation (λmax = 350 nm) at ambient temperature, closely adhering to Carother's equation established by a careful kinetic study (17800 g mol-1 < Mw < 24700 g mol-1). The resulting macromolecules were in-depth analyzed via size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Additionally, SEC hyphenated to high resolution-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) enabled the careful mapping of the end group structure of the generated polymers. Furthermore, we demonstrate that both monomer systems can be readily copolymerized. The study thus demonstrates that Diels-Alder ligation resting upon photocaged dienes is a powerful tool for accessing step-growth polymers.

Abstract
Olefin cross-metathesis, a ruthenium-catalyzed carbon-carbon double bond transformation that features high selectivity, reactivity, and tolerance of various functional groups, has been extensively applied in organic synthesis and polymer chemistry. Herein, we review strategies for performing selective cross-metathesis and its applications in polymer and polysaccharide chemistry, including constructing complex polymer architectures, attaching pendant groups to polymer backbones and surfaces, and modifying polysaccharide derivatives.
