Structure-properties relationships in isosorbide-based polyacetals: Influence of linear or cyclic architecture on polymer physicochemical properties

Synthesizing Polyurethane Using Isosorbide in Primary Alcohol Form, and Its Biocompatibility Properties

Isosorbide is a bio-based renewable resource that has been utilized as a stiffness component in the synthesis of novel polymers. Modified isosorbide-based bis(2-hydroxyethyl)isosorbide (BHIS) has favorable structural features, such as fused bicyclic rings and a primary hydroxyl function with improved reactivity to polymerization when compared to isosorbide itself. Polyurethane series (PBH PU series) using polycarbonate diol (PCD) and bis(2-hydroxyethyl)isosorbide (BHIS) were polymerized through a simple, one-shot polymerization without a catalyst using various ratios of BHIS, PCD, and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). The synthesized BHIS and PUs were characterized using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and mechanical testing. To determine the feasibility of using these PUs as biomedical materials, we investigated the effects of their BHIS content on PBH PU series physical and mechanical properties. The PBH PU series has excellent elasticity, with a breaking strain ranging from 686.55 to 984.69% at a 33.26 to 63.87 MPa tensile stress. The material showed superb biocompatibility with its high adhesion and proliferation in the bone marrow cells. Given their outstanding mechanical properties and biocompatibility, the polymerized bio-based PUs can contribute toward various applications in the medical field.

Comparison of Cyclic and Linear Poly(lactide)s Using Small-Angle Neutron Scattering

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments were conducted on cyclic and linear polymers of racemic and l-lactides (PLA) with the goal of comparing chain configurations, scaling, and effective polymer-solvent interactions of the two topologies in acetone-d ₆ and THF-d ₈. There are limited reports of SANS results on cyclic polymers due to the lack of substantial development in the field until recently. Now that pure, well-defined cyclic polymers are accessible, unanswered questions about their rheology and physical conformations can be better investigated. Previously reported SANS experiments have used cyclic and linear polystyrene samples; therefore, our work allowed for direct comparison using a contrasting (structurally and sterically) polymer. We compared SANS results of cyclic and linear PLA samples with various microstructures and molecular weights at two different temperatures, allowing for comparison with a wide range of variables. The results followed the trends of previous experiments, but much greater differences in the effective polymer-solvent interaction parameters between cyclic and linear forms of PLA were observed, implying that the small form factor and hydrogen bonding in PLA allowed for much more compact conformations in the cyclic form only. Also, the polymer microstructure was found to influence polymer-solvent interaction parameters substantially. These results illustrate how the difference in polymer-solvent interactions between cyclic and linear polymers can vary greatly depending on the polymer in question and the potential of neutron scattering as a tool for identification and characterization of the cyclic topology.

Crystallization and molecular mobility in renewable semicrystalline copolymers based on polycaprolactone and polyisosorbide

A series of novel block copolymers based on two biodegradable polymers, poly(ε-caprolactone), PCL, and poly(isosorbide), PIS, with PIS fractions 5, 10, and 25 wt%, are studied herein. The aim is to assess the effects of the amorphous PIS phase on the properties of the semicrystalline PCL (majority), in addition to the synthesis strategy. The latter involved the polymerization of caprolactone onto initial PIS of low molar mass, resulting, thus, in gradually shorter PCL blocks when the starting amount of PIS is increased. The structure-property relationship investigation, with an emphasis on molecular mobility and crystallization, involves the following sum of complementary techniques: differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric spectroscopy, polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The molecular mobility map for these PCL/PIS and initial PIS is drawn here for the first time. Despite the high glass transition temperature of PIS (T_g ∼ 51 °C) compared to that of PCL (-66 °C), the T_g of the copolymers barely changes, as it is mainly ruled by crystallinity. The latter seems to be facilitated in the copolymers, in both the amount and the rate. The local molecular mobility of PCL and PCL/PIS consists of faster γ_PCL relaxation which is unaffected in the copolymers, whereas the slower β_PCL process arising from the backbone ester group rotation exhibits a systematic deceleration in the presence of PIS. A connection between such local motions and the corresponding segmental α relaxation, observed previously in other polyesters, is also found to be true here. Apart from that, the dielectric T_g as well as the cooperativity of the polymer chains drop moderately, which indicates spatial confinement between the PCL crystals, whereas correlations with the looser lamellar chain packing within the spherulites are gained. The relaxations of initial PIS, i.e., γ_PIS, β_PIS and α_PIS, could not be resolved within the copolymers. Along with other properties, such as ionic conductivity, we conclude to the homogeneity of our systems, with sufficient PCL/PIS distribution.

Synthesis, Properties, and Applications of Bio-Based Cyclic Aliphatic Polyesters

Cyclic polymers have long been reported in the literature, but their development has often been stunted by synthetic difficulties such as the presence of linear contaminants. Research into the synthesis of these polymers has made great progress in the past decade, and this review covers the synthesis, properties, and applications of cyclic polymers, with an emphasis on bio-based aliphatic polyesters. Synthetic routes to cyclic polymers synthesized from bioderived monomers, alongside mechanistic descriptions for both ring closure and ring expansion polymerization approaches, are reviewed. The review also highlights some of the unique physical properties of cyclic polymers together with potential applications. The findings illustrate the substantial recent developments made in the syntheses of cyclic polymers, as well as the progress which can be made in the commercialization of bio-based polymers through the versatility this topology provides.

Facile construction of stabilized, pH-sensitive micelles based on cyclic statistical copolymers of poly(oligo(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate-st-N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) for in vitro anticancer drug delivery

This study developed a facile approach to improve the colloidal stability of a cyclic polycation as well as presented a pH-sensitive cyclic copolymer-based nanoplatform with great potential for anticancer drug delivery.
