Efficient synthesis of a rod-coil conjugated graft copolymer by combination of thiol-maleimide chemistry and MOF-catalyzed photopolymerization

Diels-Alder Cycloaddition of 2,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) and N-Phenylmaleimide Derivatives

Currently, amidst atmospheric menace where natural calamities such as wildfire and floods are becoming more frequent than ever, biobased derivatives offer a sustainable alternative to conventional ways, for instance, petrochemical commodities. Biobased products, obtained from agricultural waste, including 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF), 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) are promising chemical platforms in the biorefinery, which is yet to be explored. The Diels-Alder cycloaddition of BHMF and N-phenylmaleimide derivatives under optimal reaction conditions is investigated in this report. First, HMF is reduced to BHMF in the presence of NaBH4, and then the Diels-Alder reaction of BHMF and N-phenylmaleimide derivatives is investigated to produce Diels-Alder adducts. All novel compounds are synthesized in acceptable yields and effectively characterized by employing important techniques such as one-dimensional (1D) NMR spectroscopy (1H, 13C, DEPT-90, and DEPT- 135), two-dimensional (2D) NMR spectroscopy (1H-1H COSY, 1H-13C HSQC, and 1H-13C HMBC), IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, mass spectrum (QTOF), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD). Furthermore, this study underlines the necessity of sustainable synthetic methodologies and gives critical insights into the progress of ecologically friendly methodologies, providing a new avenue as a tunable precursor for the challenging functionalized polymer in the future.

Visible Light-Regulated Heterogeneous Catalytic PET-RAFT by High Crystallinity Covalent Organic Framework

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of promising photocatalysts for conversing light energy into chemical energy. Based on the tunable building blocks, COFs can be well-designed as photocatalyst for mediating reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Herein, 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) and 2,2″-bipyridine-5,5″-diamine (Bpy) are chosen to construct imine-based TFPPy-Bpy-COFs for catalyzing RAFT polymerization of methacrylates under white light irradiation. The well-defined polymers with precise molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution are obtained. The switch on/off light experiments suggest excellent temporal control toward RAFT polymerization system and the chain-extension reaction indicates high chain-end fidelity of macro-initiators. Mechanism study clarifies that the electron transfer between excited state of TFPPy-Bpy-COFs and RAFT agent can form living radicals to mediate polymerization. This methodology provides a novel platform for reversible-deactivation radical polymerization using COFs as heterogeneous catalysts.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials as polymerization catalysts: a review and recent advances

Synthetic polymers are ubiquitous across both the industrial and consumer segments of the world economy. Catalysts enable rapid, efficient, selective, and even stereoselective, formation of desired polymers from any of a host of candidate monomers. While numerous molecular catalysts have been shown to be effective for these reactions, separation of the catalysts from reaction products is typically difficult - a potentially problematic complication that suggests instead the use of heterogeneous catalysts. Many of the most effective heterogeneous catalysts, however, comprise supported collections of reaction centres that are decidedly nonuniform in their composition, siting, and activity. Nonuniformity complicates atomic-scale evaluation of the basis for catalytic activity and thus impedes scientific hypothesis-driven understanding and development of superior catalysts. In view of the fundamental desirability of structural and chemical uniformity at the meso, nano, and even atomic scale, crystallographically well-defined, high-porosity metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted attention as model catalysts and/or catalyst-supports for a wide variety of chemical transformations. In the realm of synthetic polymers, catalyst-functionalized MOFs have been studied for reactions ranging from coordination-mediated polymerization of ethylene to visible-light initiated radical polymerizations. Nevertheless, many polymerization reactions remain to be explored - and, no doubt, will be explored, given the remarkable structural and compositional diversity of attainable MOFs. Noteworthy emerging studies include work directed toward more sophisticated catalytic schemes such as polymer templating using MOF pore architectures and tandem copolymerizations using MOF-supported reaction centres. Finally, it is appropriate to recognize that MOFs themselves are synthetic polymers - albeit, uncoventional ones.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Polymer Science: Polymerization Catalysis, Polymerization Environment, and Hybrid Materials

The development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has had a significant impact on various fields of chemistry and materials science. Naturally, polymer science also exploited this novel type of material for various purposes, which is due to the defined porosity, high surface area, and catalytic activity of MOFs. The present review covers various topics of MOF/polymer research beginning with MOF-based polymerization catalysis. Furthermore, polymerization inside MOF pores as well as polymerization of MOF ligands is described, which have a significant effect on polymer structures. Finally, MOF/polymer hybrid and composite materials are highlighted, encompassing a range of material classes, like bulk materials, membranes, and dispersed materials. In the course of the review, various applications of MOF/polymer combinations are discussed (e.g., adsorption, gas separation, drug delivery, catalysis, organic electronics, and stimuli-responsive materials). Finally, past research is concluded and an outlook toward future development is provided.
