Abstract
Natural polysaccharides are among the renewable sources with great potential for replacing petroleum-derived chemicals as precursors to produce biodegradable films. This study aimed to prepare biopolymeric films using starch extracted from the periderm and cortex of cassava roots (waste from cassava root processing), locust bean galactomannan, and cellulose nanofibers also obtained from cassava waste. The films were prepared by casting, and their physicochemical, mechanical, and biodegradability properties were evaluated. The content of cellulose nanofibers varied from 0.5 to 2.5%. Although the addition of cellulose nanofibers did not alter the mechanical properties of the films, it significantly enhanced the vapor barrier of the films (0.055 g mm/m2 h kPa-2.5% nanofibers) and their respective stabilities in aqueous acidic and alkaline media. All prepared films were biodegradable, with complete degradation occurring within five days. The prepared films were deemed promising alternatives for minimizing environmental impacts caused by the disposal of petroleum-derived materials.

Abstract
Thermoplastic starch-based nanocomposites with varying glycerol content and montmorillonite as a nanofiller were studied using dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) during one-year storage. DMA results showed that starch-rich and glycerol-rich domains were present in the samples and during storage for up to one year the content of the amorphous phase decreased and molecular mobility changed. 13C NMR and XRD measurements confirmed that ordered structures were formed during storage and its content was larger for samples with higher glycerol content and increased with the storage time. The data obtained from deconvolutions of 1H broad line NMR spectra indicate increased overall molecular mobility in the samples up to four months of storage, while after nine months the trends were opposite. Lower free water content compared to the total water content in the samples determined according to deconvoluted 1H MAS (magic-angle spinning) NMR spectra indicated that a part of water molecules was immobilized in the ordered structures.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to modify banana starch with pineapple leaf fibers (PALF) and its production of biodegradable films. The reaction conditions of the starch modification were a Starch/PALF mass ratio of 50, a time of 1 h and a temperature of 140 °C, to obtain a yield of 41.18 %. Characterization by FTIR and NMR confirmed that the chemical reaction was carried out. XRD and TGA analysis showed that the crystalline zones of the starch were affected during the modification and the product obtained is thermally less stable compared to unmodified starch. The modified starch showed a lower pasting profile compared to the native starch; however, the modified starch showed the ability to form a film. The starch-PALF films were obtained by the casting method and partially characterized. These films presented better mechanical properties compared to the unmodified films. Also, these films could compete with conventional non-biodegradable plastics.

Structure of Starch-Sepiolite Bio-Nanocomposites: Effect of Processing and Matrix-Filler Interactions. Polymers (Basel) 2023; 15:polym15051207. Abstract
Sepiolite clay is a natural filler particularly suitable to be used with polysaccharide matrices (e.g., in starch-based bio-nanocomposites), increasing their attractiveness for a wide range of applications, such as packaging. Herein, the effect of the processing (i.e., starch gelatinization, addition of glycerol as plasticizer, casting to obtain films) and of the sepiolite filler amount on the microstructure of starch-based nanocomposites was investigated by SS-NMR (solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared) spectroscopy. Morphology, transparency and thermal stability were then assessed by SEM (scanning electron microscope), TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) and UV-visible spectroscopy. It was demonstrated that the processing method allowed to disrupt the rigid lattice structure of semicrystalline starch and thus obtain amorphous flexible films, with high transparency and good thermal resistance. Moreover, the microstructure of the bio-nanocomposites was found to intrinsically depend on complex interactions among sepiolite, glycerol and starch chains, which are also supposed to affect the final properties of the starch-sepiolite composite materials.

Abstract
Thermoplastic starch (TPS) consisting of corn starch and glycerol as a plasticizer, and TPS-montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposite were stored at room temperature in the air with relative humidities (RH) of 11, 55 and 85% for seven weeks. Mechanical testing and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) were performed to detect changes in their mechanical properties. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy monitoring the changes in molecular mobility in the samples provided an insight into relations between mechanical properties and local structure. The results of mechanical testing indicated that the addition of MMT results in the increase in the tensile strength and Young's modulus while elongation at break decreased, indicating the reinforcing effect of MMT. DMTA experiments revealed a decrease in glass transition temperature of starch-rich phase below room temperature for samples stored at higher RH (55 and 85%). This indicates that absorbed water molecules had additional plasticizing effect on starch resulting in higher mobility of starch chain segments. Recrystallization in these samples was deduced from the shape of cross-polarization magic-angle spinning 13C NMR spectra. The shape of broad-line 1H NMR spectra reflected changes in molecular mobility in the studied samples during seven weeks of storage and revealed that a high amount of water molecules impacts the starch intermolecular hydrogen bond density.

Abstract
Nanofibrillated cellulose films have garnered attention due to their interesting proprieties such as transparency and high mechanical strength. However, they are brittle, very hydrophilic, which is decreasing their potential applications. We have successfully achieved a simple and effective chemical modification based on polymer grafting and through plasticizer additions to increase the performance of the films as well as to improve the compatibility within conventional polymer. A preliminary study shows the possibility of using this film as an interlayer in safety glazing and/or bulletproof glass with polyvinyl butyral (PVB). The modified NFC films displays high optical transmittance (93 %), increases tensile stretch and is more hydrophobic (83°). A higher flexibility was also achieved, as the film was greatly stretched and bended without cracking or breaking. The NFC / PVB composite has three times more elongation at break, 13 % more specific energy absorbed with a half-tensile stress compared to an interlayer of PVB.

Abstract
A neutral tea polysaccharide (TPSN) was isolated from green tea. Gas chromatography analysis showed that TPSN was composed of d-glucose, l-arabinose and d-galactose residues at a molar ratio of 90.0: 9.1: 0.9. The weight-averaged molecular weight of TPSN was determined as about 2.0 × 105 g mol-1 using static light scattering analysis. The result of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy indicated that TPSN and water-soluble starch had similar structures. TPSN exhibited inhibitory activity towards α-amylase through the noncompetitive inhibition mechanism, but the tertiary structure of α-amylase related to enzymatic activity, analyzed using circular dichroism spectroscopy, was not affected by TPSN. Meanwhile, TPSN exhibited hydrolysis properties catalyzed by α-amylase. Molecular docking analysis revealed that the various behaviors of TPSN to α-amylase could be attributed to that the different chain segments of TPSN combined with different amino acid residues of α-amylase.
