Abstract
Preserving the ability to vividly recall emotionally rich experiences contributes to quality of life in older adulthood. While prior works suggest that moderate-intensity physical activity (MPA) may bolster memory, it is unclear whether this extends to emotionally salient memories consolidated during sleep. In the current study, older adults (mean age = 72.3 ± 5.8) completed an overnight polysomnography assessment with emotional memory tested before and after sleep and a self-report questionnaire assessing habitual PA. Results show that better negative emotional memory consolidation was associated with the frequency and duration of MPA. Statistically replacing 30 min of lower-intensity activity with MPA was associated with better negative emotional memory consolidation. MPA may enhance sleep-dependent consolidation of negative memories in older adults, with modest increases in MPA yielding significant consolidation benefits. Findings may guide interventions and inform public health recommendations by demonstrating that substituting even short durations of low-intensity activity for MPA could produce significant cognitive gains in older adulthood.

Abstract
The hippocampus is thought to support episodic memory by pattern separation, thereby supporting the ability to discriminate high similarity items. Past research evaluating whether acute exercise can improve mnemonic discrimination of high similarity items is mixed. The present experiment attempts to extend these prior mixed findings by evaluating the effects of multiple exercise intensities on hippocampal-dependent, mnemonic discrimination and memory performance. Fifty-seven young adults completed a three-condition (control, moderate-intensity, and vigorous-intensity), within-subjects crossover pretest-posttest comparison. We observed no effects of acute exercise on recognition memory or mnemonic discrimination. We discuss the implications of these null findings with the broader literature by discussing the complexity of this potential exercise-mnemonic discrimination relationship, including the unique role of exercise intensity, differences in the level of processing (e.g., conceptual vs. perceptual), and unique brain regions involved in mnemonic discrimination.

Abstract
Our memory is crucial to our daily functioning, our identity, and how we interact with the world around us. Maintaining memory functioning is therefore important in many ways. Exercise positively affects our memory. Even a single exercise session can directly boost different memory types, including working, procedural, and episodic memory. Due to these benefits, exercise has great potential as an intervention in different settings, such as schools or rehabilitation centers, and as a prevention strategy. In this chapter, we first give an overview of what memory is and why it is so relevant to our mental health. Next, we briefly discuss how, for whom, and under which circumstances exercise improves memory functioning. Then, we will summarize the literature of experimental studies investigating the direct effect of exercise on different memory types, while acknowledging current limitations and potential future directions. Finally, we briefly highlight the potential of exercise as intervention to preserve and improve memory.
