Abstract
Microbial immobilization is considered as a novel and environmentally friendly technology that uses microbes to reduce heavy metals accumulation in plants. To explore microbial resources which are useful in these applications, three water spinach rhizosphere soils polluted by different levels of heavy metals (heavy pollution (CQ), medium pollution (JZ), and relative clean (NF)) were collected. The community composition of heavy metal-immobilizing bacteria in rhizosphere soils and its effects on reducing the Cd2+ and Pb2+ concentrations in water spinach were evaluated. Four hundred strains were isolated from the CQ (belonging to 3 phyla and 14 genera), JZ (belonging to 4 phyla and 25 genera) and NF (belonged to 6 phyla and 34 genera) samples, respectively. In the CQ sample, 137 strains showed a strong ability to immobilize Cd2+ and Pb2+, giving Cd2+ and Pb2+ removal rates of greater than 80% in solution; Brevundimonas, Serratia, and Pseudoarthrobacter were the main genera. In total, 62 strains showed a strong ability to immobilize Cd2+ and Pb2+ in the JZ sample and Bacillus and Serratia were the main genera. A total of 22 strains showed a strong ability to immobilize Cd2+ and Pb2+ in the NF sample, and Bacillus was the main genus. Compared to the control, Enterobacter bugandensis CQ-7, Bacillus thuringensis CQ-33, and Klebsiella michiganensis CQ-169 significantly increased the dry weight (17.16-148%) of water spinach and reduced the contents of Cd2+ (59.78-72.41%) and Pb2+ (43.36-74.21%) in water spinach. Moreover, the soluble protein and Vc contents in the shoots of water spinach were also significantly increased (72.1-193%) in the presence of strains CQ-7, CQ-33 and CQ-169 compared to the control. In addition, the contents of Cd and Pb in the shoots of water spinach meet the standard for limit of Cd2+ and Pb2+ in vegetables in the presence of strains CQ-7, CQ-33 and CQ-169. Thus, the results provide strains as resources and a theoretical basis for the remediation of Cd- and Pb-contaminated farmlands for the safe production of vegetables.

Abstract
The study aims to seek the dietary strategies to reduce the bioaccessibility of Cd and As in contaminated rice. A total of 12 selected food matrices were assayed by using the in vitro gastrointestinal digestion models. The results showed that tomato, carrot, water spinach, and spinach reduced the solubility of Cd by 45-78%, 50-71%, 53-70%, and 45-71%, respectively. Meanwhile, tomato, carrot, potato, and sweet potato reduced the solubility of As by 53-79%, 50-80%, 40-71%, and 36-76% in aqueous solution, respectively. In both gastric and gastrointestinal phases, Cd and As bioaccessibility decreased as the amount (100, 200, or 400 mg) of food matrices increased (except for As in water spinach). These results suggested that the uses of some foodstuffs may be a good dietary strategy to reduce Cd and As bioaccessibility, although in vivo studies are required to confirm their suitability.

Abstract
Elevated concentrations of As and Sb impact environmental quality and human health. In this study total and bioavailable As and Sb were measured from recently and historically contaminated soils and the phytotoxicity of these soils was evaluated with Ipomoea aquatica (35-d exposure from germination) using biomass, length of plant tissues and photosynthetic efficiency. As and Sb were both present within the soil (co-contaminated). The bioavailable As and Sb in soils were determined by a Sequential Extraction Procedure (SEP) and compared to total soil concentrations and bioaccumulation in the edible parts of I. aquatica. For both As and Sb, bioavailable concentrations increased proportionally with the total soil concentrations and greater bioavailability in recently contaminated soil was observed. Tissue dry mass and length drastically reduced with increasing total and SEP-bioavailable As and Sb soil concentrations. The total soil concentration was a less sensitive measure of the phytotoxicity of As and Sb than the bioavailable fraction. Shoot length was inhibited by 50% (EC50) at bioavailable As concentrations of 80-96 mg kg-1 in both recently and historically contaminated soils; however, bioavailable Sb EC50 for shoot length was achieved at lower bioavailable concentrations, 96 (42-219) and 12 (7-19) mg kg-1 in recently contaminated soils and historically contaminated soils, respectively. Shoot biomass was inhibited by 50% (EC50) at bioavailable As concentrations of 11 (4-30) and 49 (37-65) mg kg-1 in recently and historically contaminated soils, respectively whereas this occurred at much lower bioavailable Sb concentrations, 2-5 mg kg-1 in both recently and historically contaminated soils. Aging is important in contaminated soils, it decreases the lability of As and Sb and hence their bioavailability to agricultural plants, thus posing a lower risk of exposure of these metalloids to humans through agricultural plants grown in contaminated soils.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The plant species Ipomoea aquatica contains various bioactive constituents, e.g. phenols and flavonoids, which have several medical uses. All previous studies were executed in Asia; however, no reports are available from Africa, and the secondary metabolites of this plant species from Africa are still unknown. OBJECTIVE The present study aims finding suitable conditions to identify the bioactive compounds from different fractions. METHODOLOGY Chromatographic fingerprint profiles of different fractions were developed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and then these conditions were transferred to thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Subsequently, the chemical structure of some bioactive compounds was elucidated using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS) and liquid chromatography-solid phase extraction-nuclear magnetic resonance (LC-SPE-NMR) spectroscopy. RESULTS The HPLC fingerprints, developed on two coupled Chromolith RP-18e columns, using a gradient mobile phase (methanol/water/trifluoroacetic acid, 5:95:0.05, v/v/v), showed more peaks than the TLC profile. The TLC fingerprint allows the identification of the types of chemical constituents, e.g. flavonoids. Two flavonoids (nicotiflorin and ramnazin-3-O-rutinoside) and two phenolic compounds (dihydroxybenzoic acid pentoside and di-pentoside) were tentatively identified by QTOF-MS, while NMR confirmed the structure of rutin and nicotiflorin. CONCLUSION The HPLC and TLC results showed that HPLC fingerprints give more and better separated peaks, but TLC helped in determining the class of the active compounds in some fractions. Bioactive constituents were identified as well using MS and NMR analyses. Two flavonoids and two phenolic compounds were tentatively identified in this species for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
Many trace elements are considered essential [iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu)], whereas others may be harmful [lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As)], depending on their concentration and chemical form. In most cases, the diet is the main pathway by which they enter our organism. The presence of toxic trace elements in food has been known for a long time, and many of the food matrices that carry them have been identified. This has led to the appearance of legislation and recommendations concerning consumption. Given that the main route of exposure is oral, passage through the gastrointestinal tract plays a fundamental role in their entry into the organism, where they exert their toxic effect. Although the digestive system can be considered to be of crucial importance in their toxicity, in most cases we do not know the events that occur during the passage of these elements through the gastrointestinal tract and of ascertaining whether they may have some kind of toxic effect on it. The aim of this review is to summarize available information on this subject, concentrating on the toxic trace elements that are of greatest interest for organizations concerned with food safety and health: Pb, Cd, Hg and As.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environmental toxic contaminant, which causes serious health-related problems. In this study, human intestinal cell line (Caco-2 cells) and normal human liver cell line (HL-7702 cells) were used to investigate the toxicity and bioavailability of Cd to both cell lines and to validate these cell lines as in vitro models for studying Cd accumulation and toxicity in human intestine and liver. Results showed that Cd uptake by both cell lines increased in a dose-dependent manner and its uptake by Caco-2 cells (720.15 µg mg(-1) cell protein) was significantly higher than HL-7702 cells (229.01 µg mg(-1) cell protein) at 10 mg L(-1). A time- and dose-dependent effect of Cd on cytotoxicity assays (LDH release, MTT assay) was observed in both Cd-treated cell lines. The activities of antioxidant enzymes and differentiation markers (SOD, GPX, and AKP) of the HL-7702 cells were higher than those of Caco-2 cells, although both of them decreased significantly with raising Cd levels. The results from the present study indicate that Cd above a certain level inhibits cellular antioxidant activities and HL-7702 cells are more sensitive to Cd exposure than Caco-2 cells. However, Cd concentrations <0.5 mg L(-1) pose no toxic effects on both cell lines.

Abstract
Arsenic is an element widely distributed in the environment, and the diet is the main source of arsenic exposure for most people. However, many of the processes related to steps before intestinal absorption are unknown. This study evaluates the effect of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on pentavalent arsenic forms [As(V), MMA(V), DMA(V)] present in various vegetables (garlic, broccoli, asparagus, spinach) after soaking or boiling in aqueous solutions of these species. The results showed that the gastrointestinal digest contained trivalent or thiolated arsenic forms different from the pentavalent species added initially. Transformation percentages varied, depending on sample, treatment, and arsenic species. Results showed transformation of up to 22% to As(III), 35% to MMA(III)/MMAS, and 26% to DMA(III)/DMAS. These data indicate that more toxic arsenic species are present in the gastrointestinal digest, and they highlight the need to consider this process when evaluating the toxicological risk associated with ingestion of this metalloid.
