Abstract
The dietary fiber extracted from cassava pulp, composed of crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and cellulose content, demonstrates promise as a functional food ingredient. The study's objectives encompassed the assessment of short-term toxicity and the evaluation of its potential cholesterol-lowering effects. The results indicated that cassava pulp dietary fiber (CDF) is well-tolerated with non-toxic thresholds determined at 10.01 g/kg body weight/day for male rats and 11.21 g/kg body weight/day for female rats during the short-term toxicity assessment. Furthermore, CDF exhibited notable cholesterol-lowering effects, significantly reducing serum triglyceride and serum total cholesterol levels, along with decreased liver total lipids and liver cholesterol levels. In contrast, it led to significant increases in fecal total lipids and cholesterol when compared to the control group. Most notably, there were no significant differences in terms of serum triglyceride, serum total cholesterol, liver total lipids, and liver cholesterol between CDF and the conventional cholesterol-lowering medication, simvastatin. These findings underscore the potential of cassava pulp dietary fiber as a natural and safe alternative for managing hyperlipidemia and related conditions. It offers a valuable avenue for the development of functional foods aimed at improving cardiovascular health and further investigation for its potential application in the field of nutraceuticals.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) is one of the most popular subtropical fruits. Various parts of longan, including seeds, pericarp and pulp, have long been used in traditional medicine in China, Thailand and other Asian countries. The pulp has high sugar, vitamin and mineral content as well as bioactive components. The seeds and pericarp have also been reported to contain beneficial polyphenolic compounds. Longan sugar extract from pulp (LGSP) is prepared as a conventional sugar product. Longan sugar extract from whole longan fruit (LGSW) is also offered as a health food and as a medicinal product. AIM OF THE STUDY The objective of this study was to identify and compare potential health hazards of both LGSW and LGSP by testing for acute and chronic oral toxicity in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS In acute toxicity testing, an oral dose (20 g/kg) of either LGSW or LGSP was administered to groups of rats. Mortality and clinical signs of toxicity were observed for 24 h, and then daily for a total of 14 days. In the chronic toxicity test, either LGSW (1, 2.5 and 5 g/kg/day) or LGSP (5 g/kg/day) was administered orally for a period of 180 days. After that treatment period, the rats in the satellite groups which received the highest doses of either LGSW or LGSP were observed for an additional 28 days. The rats then underwent clinical observation, body and organ weight measurement, hematological and biochemical analyses, and histopathological examination. RESULTS In the acute toxicity study, the oral administration of LGSP or LGSW in either pellet or syrup formulations did not cause mortality or any pathological abnormalities. In the chronic toxicity study, neither LGSW nor LGSP resulted in death or in any changes in behavior of the rats. All hematological and serum biochemical values of both the LGSW- and LGSP-treated groups were within the normal ranges. No histopathological abnormalities of any internal organs were observed. CONCLUSION The safety of longan sugar extract made from whole fruit (pulp, seeds and pericarb) is comparable to that of longan sugar extract made from pulp alone.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Ginsenoside compound K (CK), a product produced by the intestinal bacteria-mediated breakdown of ginsenoside, exhibits a wide array of pharmacological activities against diverse targets. However, few of preclinical safety evaluation of CK is reported. AIMS OF THE STUDY The present study therefore sought to assess the toxicity of oral CK in Beagle dogs over a 26-week period. MATERIAL AND METHODS All dogs received 4, 12, or 36 mg/kg oral CK doses for 26 weeks with regular monitoring, followed by a 4-week recovery period. Animals were monitored through measurements of temperature, weight, food intake, blood chemistry and hematological findings, electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements, urinalysis, gross necropsy and organ weight and tissue histopathology. RESULTS Animals in the 36 mg/kg group exhibited an apparent reduction in body weight over the study period, in addition to the presence of focal liver necrosis and increased plasma enzyme levels (alanine aminotransferase, ALT; alkaline phosphatase, ALP) consistent with hepatotoxicity, although there was some evidence suggesting this toxicity was reversible. Animals in the 4 and 12 mg/kg groups did not exhibit any apparent toxicity for any measured parameters. CONCLUSION These results thus indicate that the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) in dogs is 12 mg/kg.

Abstract
In this study, we assessed whether D-allulose was associated with reproductive toxicity in rats, assessing reproduction and offspring growth following gavage of parents with 0, 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg of this compound. Specifically, female rats were continuously dose from 2 weeks prior to mating until day 21 of lactation, while males were dose for the 10 weeks before mating. We did not observe any direct toxicity or mortality upon D-allulose administration, with no changes in body weight or eating behavior between study and control groups. We also did not observe any significant alterations in precoital time, copulation index, fertility index (male), or pregnancy index (male) between groups. Relative to controls, there was also no effect of D-allulose treatment on pregnancy rates, implantation, pregnancy length, gender ratios, viability indexes, lactation indexes, prenatal death rates, or number of live young at time of birth. Organ weights and indexes were also comparable between groups at time of sacrifice, and treatment was not linked to any obvious manifestations upon necropsy or histopathological examination. In the F1 offspring, the body weights of pups born to parents administered D-allulose (2000, 1000, and 500 mg/kg) were slightly higher on days 1-9 postnatally relative to controls (p < 0.05), however after day 9 these effects were no longer evident. Together, these results indicate a no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of D-allulose of 2000 mg/kg, the highest dose tested, in parental animals and their offspring.
