The application of aromaticity and antiaromaticity to reaction mechanisms

Predicting Small Molecule Activations Including Dinitrogen Based on an Inorganic Benzene B4N2 Framework

Although main group species have emerged in the field of dinitrogen activation in recent years, the reported examples are particularly rare in comparison with transition metal complexes due to their significant challenges. Herein, we demonstrate a [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of N2 (with an activation energy as low as 12.5 kcal mol-1) initiated by an inorganic benzene via density functional theory calculations. Such N2 activation is supported by the elongated nitrogen-nitrogen bond distance (dNN), decreased vibration frequency (νNN), and weakened Wiberg bond index (WBINN). Subsequently, the "push-pull" electronic effect, formed by introducing a Lewis acid, HB(C6F5)2, facilitates the generation of thermodynamically more stable products. In addition, this inorganic benzene could also be used to activate a series of small molecules, including carbon dioxide, acetylene, ethylene, and acetonitrile with reaction barriers ranging from 4.7 to 11.6 kcal mol-1. Our findings provide an alternative approach to N2 activation and functionalization, theoretically validating the feasibility of the dual Lewis acid strategy for dinitrogen activation.

Spin population determines whether antiaromaticity can increase or decrease radical stability

Aromaticity, as a classical and fundamental concept in chemistry, can enhance thermodynamic stability. In sharp contrast, a previous study showed that antiaromaticity rather than aromaticity can enhance the radical stability of α-methyl heterocyclic compounds. Here, we demonstrate a similar antiaromaticity-promoted radical stability when the methyl group is replaced by five-membered (alkyl)(amino)cyclics (AACs). More interestingly, when an AAC is fused with an antiaromatic ring, the radical stability could be either reduced or enhanced, depending on the spin population. Specifically, when the spin density is populated on an incoming antiaromatic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diborinine moiety, the radical stability is enhanced whereas when the spin density is maintained on the original five-membered ring, the radical stability is reduced. Our findings highlight the importance of spin density in tuning the radical stability, inviting experimental chemists' verification.

Probing σ-Aromaticity-Driven Ring Contraction of Metallabenzocyclobutadiene to Metallabenzocyclopropene

Ring contraction of metallacyclobutadiene to metallacyclopropene is rare because of the increasing strain from a four-membered ring to a three-membered one. Here we demonstrate a new series of reactions of metallabenzocyclobutadiene to metallabenzocyclopropene via density functional theory calculations. The results suggest that these reactions are thermodynamically favorable ranging from -17.4 to -29.4 kcal mol-1, and a low reaction barrier (10.3 kcal mol-1) is achieved when the metal center is Ru and the ligands are one cyanide and one chloride. Further analysis suggests that a strengthened binding energy helps stabilize the transition state in the protonation process. The aromaticity during the reaction was investigated using the electron density of delocalized bonds (EDDB), isomerization stabilization energy, and isodesmic reactions. The EDDB shows that the π-conjugation is disrupted in the intermediate, and then σ-aromaticity is generated and dominant in the products. Our findings could be helpful for experimentalists in developing novel ring contraction reactions driven by aromaticity.

Probing the Limit of the Number of Saturated Atoms for Achieving Hyperconjugative Aromaticity

Aromaticity is a fundamental concept in organic chemistry. Hyperconjugative aromaticity, also known as hyperconjugation-induced aromaticity, has evolved from its origin from main group substituents to transition metal analogues, establishing itself as an important category of aromaticity. Additionally, aromatic compounds comprising two sp3-carbon atoms have recently been reported both experimentally and computationally. However, what is the maximum number of sp3-hybridized atoms needed to maintain hyperconjugative aromaticity? Here, we report that hyperconjugative aromaticity can be achieved in hexa-substituted indoliums and octa-substituted pyrroliums, possessing three-five sp3-hybridized carbon/nitrogen atoms by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The aromaticity was confirmed by using various aromaticity indices, i.e., NICS, MCI, and EDDB. Notably, the strong electron-donating ability and aurophilicity of Au(I) substituents play a pivotal role in maintaining the aromaticity and structural integrity. In addition, increasing the number of hyperconjugative centers will decrease the aromaticity in these five-membered rings. Our findings highlight the significance of transition metal substituents in hyperconjugative aromaticity and offer a novel approach for designing aromatic organometallics.

The Antiaromatic Nucleophilic Substitution Reaction (SNAAr) in Cycloheptatrienyl-Anion Containing Zwitterions with a Möbius-Aromatic Intermediate

Antiaromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions in cycloheptatrienide pyridinium and phosphonium zwitterions with initial formation of a cycloheptatetraene intermediate are explored. The mechanism was supported by quantum chemical calculations, first-order reaction kinetics, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The pyridinium zwitterion exhibited weak antiaromaticity, whereas the intermediate displayed Möbius aromaticity, as evidenced by nuclear independent chemical shift values and the shape of its HOMO. This study represents the eighth confirmed instance of a Möbius-aromatic organic species in its ground state.

Antiaromaticity of Cycloheptatrienyl Anions: Structure, Acidity, and Magnetic Properties

Investigations of the nature and degree of antiaromaticity of cycloheptatrienyl anion derivatives using both experimental and computational tools are presented. The ground state of cycloheptatrienyl anion in the gas phase is triplet, planar and Baird-aromatic. In DMSO, it assumes a singlet distorted allylic form with a paratropic ring current. The other derivatives in both phases assume either allylic or diallylic conformations depending on the substituent pattern. A combination of experimental and computational methods was used to determine the pKa values of 16 derivatives in DMSO, which ranged from 36 to -10.7. We revealed that the stronger stabilization of the anionic system, which correlates with acidity, does not necessarily imply a lower degree of antiaromaticity in terms of magnetic properties. Conversely, the substitution pattern first affects the geometry of the ring through the bulkiness of the substituents and their better conjugation with a more distorted system. Consequently, the distortion reduces the cyclic conjugation in the π-system and thereby decreases the paratropic current in a magnetic field, which manifests itself as a decrease in the NICS. The triplet-state geometries and magnetic properties are nearly independent on the substitution pattern, which is typical for simple aromatic systems.

Insight into the Stability of Pentazolyl Derivatives based on Covalent Bond

Pentazole is regarded as a unique inorganic molecule that possess organic heterocyclic structure. Therefore, the research on pentazolyl derivatives represents a cutting-edge direction in both contemporary inorganic chemistry and heterocyclic chemistry. Moreover, their synthesis is regarded as the most significant research topic in the field of energetic materials due to the great potential of pentazolyl derivatives to breakthrough the energy bottleneck of CHNO-based energetic materials. However, synthesizing pentazolyl derivatives is challenging. To provide a theoretical support for the synthesis, we conducted theoretical studies on six single-ring pentazolyl derivatives with different functional groups. The results suggest that derivatization reduces the bond strength and weakens the aromaticity of the pentazolate ring. Further analysis showed that derivatization mainly affects the π aromaticity of the pentazolate ring, and ultimately causing poor stability of the pentazolyl derivatives. Among the six derivatives investigated in this study, fluoro pentazole (cyclo-N5-F) and hydroxyl pentazole (cyclo-N5-OH) possess good aromaticity, which is similar to the reported cyclo-N5-NCHN(CH3)2. Further calculations show that the kinetic stability of cyclo-N5-OH is higher than that of cyclo-N5-F. These results collectively indicate that cyclo-N5-OH is a promising candidate for synthesizing single-ring pentazolyl derivatives.

Theoretical Perspective on the Design of Surface Frustrated Lewis Pairs for Small-Molecule Activation

The excellent reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP) to activate small molecules has gained increasing attention in recent decades. Though the development of surface FLP (SFLP) is prompting the application of FLP in the chemical industry, the design of SFLP with superior activity, high density, and excellent stability for small-molecule activation is still challenging. Herein, we review the progress of designing SFLP by surface engineering, screening natural SFLP, and the dynamic formation of SFLP from theoretical perspectives. We highlight the breakthrough in fine-tuning the activity, density, and stability of the designed SFLP studied by using computational methods. We also discuss future challenges and directions in designing SFLP with outstanding capabilities for small-molecule activation.

Comparison of Various Theoretical Measures of Aromaticity within Monosubstituted Benzene

The effects of monosubstitution on the aromaticity of benzene are assessed using a number of different quantitative schemes. The ability of the mobile π-electrons to respond to an external magnetic field is evaluated using several variants of the NICS scheme which calculate the shielding of points along the axis perpendicular to the molecule. Another class of measures is related to the drive toward the uniformity of C-C bond lengths and strengths. Several energetic quantities are devised to approximate an aromatic stabilization energy and the tendency of the molecule to maintain planarity. There is a lack of consistency in that the various measures of aromaticity lead to differing conclusions as to the effects of substituents on the aromaticity of the ring.

N2 cleavage by silylene and formation of H2Si(μ-N)2SiH2

Fixation and functionalisation of N2 by main-group elements has remained scarce. Herein, we report a fixation and cleavage of the N ≡ N triple bond achieved in a dinitrogen (N2) matrix by the reaction of hydrogen and laser-ablated silicon atoms. The four-membered heterocycle H2Si(μ-N)2SiH2, the H2SiNN(H2) and HNSiNH complexes are characterized by infrared spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum-chemical calculations. The synergistic interaction of the two SiH2 moieties with N2 results in the formation of final product H2Si(μ-N)2SiH2, and theoretical calculations reveal the donation of electron density of Si to π* antibonding orbitals and the removal of electron density from the π bonding orbitals of N2, leading to cleave the non-polar and strong NN triple bond.

Screening seven-electron boron-centered radicals for dinitrogen activation

The activation of dinitrogen is significant as nitrogen-containing compounds play an important role in industries. However, the inert NN triple bond caused by its large HOMO-LUMO gap (10.8 eV) and high bond dissociation energy (945 kJ mol-1 ) renders its activation under mild conditions particularly challenging. Recent progress shows that a few main group species can mimic transition metal complexes to activate dinitrogen. Here, we demonstrate that a series of seven-electron (7e) boron-centered radical can be used to activate N2 via density functional theory calculations. It is found that boron-centered radicals containing amine ligand perform best on the thermodynamics of dinitrogen activation. In addition, when electron-donating groups are introduced at the boron atom, these radicals can be used to activate N2 with low reaction barriers. Further analysis suggests that the electron transfer from the boron atom to the π* orbitals of dinitrogen is essential for its activation. Our findings suggest great potential of 7e boron radicals in the field of dinitrogen activation.

Metal Influence on Cyaphide-Azide 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Reactions: Aromaticity and Activation Strain

The factors governing 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions involving C≡P-containing compounds are computationally explored in detail using quantum chemical tools. To this end, the parent process involving tBuN3 and tBuCP is analyzed and compared to the analogous reaction involving organometallic cyaphide complexes (metal=Au, Pt, Ge, Mg), in order to understand the role of the metal fragment in such transformations. It is found that while the metal fragment does not significantly influence the aromaticity of the corresponding concerted transition states or the regioselectivity of the transformation, it may modify the reactivity of the cyaphide complexes (i. e. Ge and Mg cyaphide complexes are comparatively more reactive). The computed reactivity trends and the factors behind the regioselectivity of the cycloaddition reaction are quantitatively analyzed with the help of the activation strain model in combination with the energy decomposition analysis method.

Exploring the Aromaticity Differences of Isoelectronic Species of Cyclo[18]carbon (C18), B6C6N6, and B9N9: The Role of Carbon Atoms as Connecting Bridges

The cyclo[18]carbon (C18) has piqued widespread interest in recent years for its geometrical aesthetic and unique electronic structure. Inspired by it, theoretical investigations of its isoelectronic B9N9 have been published occasionally; however, few studies considered their other companion B6C6N6. In this work, we study the geometric structure, charge distribution, bonding characteristic, aromaticity, and electron delocalization of B6C6N6 and B9N9 for the first time and compare the relevant results with those of C18. Based on the comprehensive analysis of aromaticity indicators such as AV1245, nucleus-independent chemical shifts, anisotropy of the induced current density, magnetically induced current density, iso-chemical shielding surface, and induced magnetic field (Bind), we found that B6C6N6 has definitely a double aromatic character similar to C18 and the aromaticities of the two are very close, while B9N9 is a nonaromatic species. In response to this novel finding, we delved into its nature from an electron delocalization perspective through a localized orbital locator, electron localization function, Fermi hole, and atomic remote delocalization index analyses. The C atom between B and N as an interconnecting bridge strengthens the electron delocalization of the conjugate path, which is the essence of the significant enhancement of the molecular aromaticity from B9N9 to B6C6N6. This work elucidates that within the framework of the isoelectronicity of C18, different methods of atomic doping can achieve molecules with completely different properties.

Adaptive σ aromaticity in the rhenacyclopropene rings

Species generally exhibit one-state aromaticity either in the lowest singlet state (S0 ) or the lowest triplet state (T1 ) according to the Hückel's and Baird's rules. Hence, it is rare for species exhibit two-state aromaticity in both the S0 and T1 states (termed as adaptive aromaticity), let alone adaptive σ aromaticity. Here, we report adaptive σ aromaticity in unsaturated rhenacyclopropene rings via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Various aromaticity indices including NICS, ACID, EDDB together with isodesmic reactions support the adaptive σ aromaticity in these rhenacyclopropene rings. As the T1 state of these species is formed by the ππ* excitation, the σ-aromaticity of these three-membered rings in the S0 state could hold in the T1 state. In addition, the aromaticity effect of the fused rings is also examined. Our findings expand the family of adaptive σ aromaticity, enriching the metallaaromatic chemistry.

π-Aromaticity Dominating in a Saturated Ring: Neutral Aromatic Silicon Analogues of Cyclobutane-1,3-diyls

The synthesis, structures, and reactivity of the first neutral 2π-aromatic Si4 rings [LSiSiAr(X)]2 (3: X = Br; 4: X = Cl; L = PhC(NtBu)2, Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) were described. Compounds 3 and 4 were obtained by 1,3-halogenation of tetrasilacyclobutadiene (LSiSiAr)2 (2), which was prepared by the reductive cross-coupling of trisilane (ArSiCl2)2SiHAr with two equiv of chlorosilylene LSiCl. The reaction of 3 with two equiv of PhLi yielded the corresponding substitution Si4 ring [LSiSiAr(Ph)]2 (5). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 3 disclosed that it adopts both puckered (3a) and planar (3b) structures in the solid state, whereas 4 and 5 exhibit only a puckered structure. DFT calculations suggested that the puckered 3a features almost the same electronic structure with fully delocalized 2π planar 3b. The dominant 2π-aromaticity of 3 in a σ-frame has been demonstrated by DFT calculations, providing the first example of aromatics featuring both planar and puckered structures.

Adaptive Aromaticity in 18e Metallapentalenes

Complexes with aromaticity in both the lowest singlet state (S0) and the lowest triplet state (T1) (denoted as adaptive aromaticity) are rare because according to Hückel's and Baird's rules, a species could be aromatic in either the S0 or T1 state in most cases. Thus, it is particularly challenging to design species with adaptive aromaticity. Previous reports on adaptive aromaticity were mainly focused on 16e metallapentalenes. Here, we demonstrate that 18e metallapentalenes could possess adaptive aromaticity supported by a set of aromaticity indices when the nitrido and imido ligands are introduced via density functional theory calculations. Further investigation suggests that the metal-carbon bond strength plays an important role in the S0 state aromaticity and the T1 state aromaticity could be attributed to spin electron localization. All these findings could be useful for the development of metallaaromatic chemistry.

Probing Near-infrared Absorbance of E and Z Diazene Isomers via Antiaromaticity

The photoswitching behaviors of heteroaryl azos and azobenzenes have attracted considerable interest due to their applications from material science to pharmacology. However, the use of UV light limits their application, especially in biomedicine and photopharmacology. In this work, using several aromaticity descriptors, including anisotropy of the induced current density analysis and nucleus-independent chemical shifts, we systematically investigate the relationship between anti-aromaticity and the absorption of a series of heterocyclic azos. We have demonstrated that the antiaromatic heterocycles substituted with diazenes enable the significant red shifts of the n → π* and π → π* transition bands of E and Z isomers via density functional theory calculations. Moreover, introducing substituents into heterocycles could further tune the absorption. Finally, the λmax of the first transition bands of the E (ca. 1026 nm) and Z isomers (ca. 1167 nm) of azos is achieved in the near-infrared region.
