Abstract
The present study compared blood plasma metals in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with those in unaffected children in Shenzhen (China). Factors associated with the metal bioaccumulation were further investigated. Thirty-four blood samples of children with ASD were collected in a local hospital (Shenzhen Children's Hospital), while those of 38 unaffected children were from a local large public kindergarten, during March to April in 2016. Metal analysis was carried out by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. The results showed that children with ASD had higher (P < 0.01, 0.05) Pb (ASD 31.9 μg/L, unaffected children 18.6 μg/L), Hg (3.83, and 1.09 μg/L), and Cd (0.70 and 0.26 μg/L) than unaffected children, while essential elements Zn (ASD 4552.0 μg/L, unaffected children 5118.6 μg/L), Se (61.7 and 90.6 μg/L), and Mn (13.5 and 21.4 μg/L) showed an opposite pattern. Moreover, the children exposed to passive smoking had higher (P < 0.05) Cd (passive smoking 1.08 μg/L; non-passive smoking 0.22 μg/L) than those without the exposure. Positive associations were found between levels of Hg or Pb and seafood consumption as well as body mass index (BMI). More future work is needed in order to clarify the association between metal exposure and ASD occurrence in China.

Abstract
High-quality Zhongning Goji berries (ZNG) are illegally adulterated in the market by adding non-ZNG (NZNG). An accurate, rapid, and effective approach for the producing area identification of ZNG is needed to protect the geographical indications of Goji berry products and to ensure fair trade. Samples from different regions were collected and their odors were detected by an electronic nose (E-nose). Principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were employed to build identification models. The E-nose models were further verified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The identification rates of the PCA, CA, and LDA models were 91.0%, 98.9%, and 100%, respectively. The PCA and CA models presented good results, and the LDA model showed optimum performance. These conditions indicate the feasibility of using the E-nose technique for ZNG identification. GC-MS analysis revealed differences and similarities in total ion current chromatograms between ZNG and NZNG.

Abstract
The concentrations of metals/metalloids in blood plasma collected from 111 healthy residents (51 female, 60 male) in Hong Kong (obtained from the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service, from March to April 2008) were quantified by means of a double-focusing sector field inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). Results showed that concentrations of these toxic metals such as Hg, Cd, and Pb in Hong Kong residents were not serious when compared with other countries. Males accumulated significantly higher (p < 0.05 or 0.01) Fe (female 0.92 mg/L; male 1.28), Sn (0.44 μg/L; 0.60), Cr (0.77; 0.90), Hg (1.01; 1.73), and Pb (23.4; 31.6) than females. Smokers accumulated significantly higher (p < 0.05) Cd (smoker 0.27 μg/L; nonsmoker 0.17) and Pb (32.8; 17.6) than nonsmokers. Positive correlations were found between concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg, with respect to seafood diet habit, body mass index (BMI), and age. More intensive studies involving more samples are needed before a more definite conclusion can be drawn, especially on the causal relationships between concentrations of metals/metalloids with dietary preference and lifestyle of the general public.

Abstract
Rejection is a common problem after cardiac transplants leading to significant number of adverse events and deaths, particularly in the first year of transplantation. The gold standard to identify rejection is endomyocardial biopsy. This technique is complex, cumbersome and requires a lot of expertise in the correct interpretation of stained biopsy sections. Traditional histopathology cannot be used actively or quickly during cardiac interventions or surgery. Our objective was to develop a stain-less approach using an emerging technology, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic imaging to identify different components of cardiac tissue by their chemical and molecular basis aided by computer recognition, rather than by visual examination using optical microscopy. We studied this technique in assessment of cardiac transplant rejection to evaluate efficacy in an example of complex cardiovascular pathology. We recorded data from human cardiac transplant patients’ biopsies, used a Bayesian classification protocol and developed a visualization scheme to observe chemical differences without the need of stains or human supervision. Using receiver operating characteristic curves, we observed probabilities of detection greater than 95% for four out of five histological classes at 10% probability of false alarm at the cellular level while correctly identifying samples with the hallmarks of the immune response in all cases. The efficacy of manual examination can be significantly increased by observing the inherent biochemical changes in tissues, which enables us to achieve greater diagnostic confidence in an automated, label-free manner. We developed a computational pathology system that gives high contrast images and seems superior to traditional staining procedures. This study is a prelude to the development of real time in situ imaging systems, which can assist interventionists and surgeons actively during procedures.

Abstract
To date, no structural study has been carried out on the effects of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) on hippocampal macromolecules. Therefore, in the present study, the effect of dietary VAD on the structure, content and function of rat hippocampal molecules was investigated using Fourier transform IF spectroscopy. Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: an experimental group maintained on a vitamin A-deficient liquid diet (VAD,n7); a control group maintained on a vitamin A-supplemented liquid diet (CON,n9); a pure control group maintained on standard solid laboratory chow (PC,n7). The PC group was included in the study to ensure that the usage of liquid diet did not influence the outcomes of VAD. Both the CON and PC groups were successfully discriminated from the VAD group by principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. The spectral analysis indicated a significant decrease in the contents of saturated and unsaturated lipids, cholesteryl esters, TAG and nucleic acids in the VAD group when compared with the CON group (P≤ 0·05). In addition, a significant decrease in membrane fluidity and a significant increase in lipid order (e.g. acyl chain flexibility) were observed in the VAD group (P≤ 0·001). The results of the artificial neural network analysis revealed a significant decrease in the α-helix structure content and a significant increase in the turn and random coil structure contents, indicating protein denaturation, in the VAD group when compared with the CON and PC groups (P≤ 0·05). Dietary exclusion of vitamin A for 3 months apparently had an adverse impact on compositional, structural and dynamical parameters. These changes can be due to increased oxidative stress, confirming the antioxidant protection provided by vitamin A when used as a dietary supplement at low-to-moderate doses.

Abstract
In recent years, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy has had an increasingly important role in the field of pathology and diagnosis of disease states. In the current study, FT-IR spectroscopy together with cluster analysis were used as a diagnostic tool in the discrimination of diabetic samples from control ones in rat kidney plasma membrane apical sides (brush-border membranes), liver microsomal membranes and Extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and Soleus (SOL) skeletal muscle tissues. A variety of alterations in the spectral parameters, such as frequency and signal intensity/area was observed in diabetic tissues and membranes compared to the control samples. Based on these spectral variations, using cluster analysis successful differentiation between diabetic and control groups was obtained in different spectral regions. The results of this current study further revealed the power and sensitivity of FT-IR spectroscopy in precise and automated diagnosis of diabetes.
