Abstract
Engineered iron nanoparticles are widely used in environmental remediation, yet their potential toxic effects on marine biota remain poorly elucidated. This study aimed to gain insight into the nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) toxicity mechanisms for marine invertebrates. Aside from the effect on oxidative status and histopathology, the effect of NZVI on lipid metabolism in bivalves was studied for the first time. To this end, specimens of Flexopecten glaber were exposed to ascending concentrations (0.5, 1, and 1.5 mg/L) of NZVI for 96 h. Results illustrate differential patterns of iron accumulation in the gills and the digestive gland. By increasing NZVI concentrations, the total iron level tended to markedly increase in the gills and decrease in the digestive gland, reaching 132 and 37.6 μg/g DW, respectively, in the specimens exposed to 1.5 mg/L. Biochemical and cellular biomarkers highlighted that NZVI caused oxidative stress (measured as hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and advanced oxidation protein product levels) and alterations of antioxidant defense systems, including reduced glutathione, non-protein thiol, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. Modulation of lipid metabolism with changed fatty acid compositions (mainly an increase in the saturation and a decrease in unsaturation levels) was also observed in both gills and digestive gland. Moreover, several histological damages, including lipofuscin accumulation, infiltrative inflammations, and digestive tubule alterations, were observed in the two studied organs, providing supplementary evidence regarding the toxic effect of NZVI. This study adds to the growing body of evidence pointing to the hazardous impacts of iron NPs on aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
Glyphosate is the most sprayed pesticide across the globe. Its toxicity to non-target marine organisms has recently piqued the scientific community's interest. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the potentially toxic effects of glyphosate on scallops, an ecologically and economically important bivalve group. To do that, specimens of the smooth scallop Flexopecten glaber were exposed to different concentrations (10, 100, and 1000 μg L-1) of the technical-grade glyphosate acid (GLY) for 96 h. The detrimental effects of this pollutant were assayed at cellular and tissular levels. The obtained results showed that the GLY was able to induce oxidative stress in the gills and the digestive gland of F. glaber as revealed by the enhanced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), protein carbonyls (PCO), malondialdehyde (MDA), and lipid peroxides (LOOH) levels and the altered antioxidant defense system (the glutathione GSH content and the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity). Additionally, GLY was found to alter the fatty acid profile, to exert a neurotoxic effect through the inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, and to provoke several histopathological damages in the two organs studied. The obtained results revealed that the pure form of GLY may exert toxic effects on F. glaber even at relatively low concentrations.

Abstract
Marine heavy metal pollution is a worldwide serious issue. Like almost all Mediterranean lagoons, the Bizerte lagoon is highly urbanized and suffers from intensive anthropogenic pressure. In the present study, we screened the metal contamination and biomarker responses in the smooth scallop Flexopecten glaber inhabiting this vulnerable ecosystem. To this end, the concentrations of six heavy metals (HM) (i.e., Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Fe) and a panel of biochemical endpoints including malondialdehyde (MDA), metallothioneins (MT), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) were determined in the gills and digestive gland across seasons (warm and cold) and sites (S1 and S2). The distribution of almost all analyzed metals in F. glaber tissues varied significantly between sites, seasons, and organs. The highest levels were recorded at S2 during the warm period. Moreover, the digestive gland was found to accumulate greater concentrations of HM than the gills. Marked spatio-temporal variations were also observed for oxidative stress biomarkers, mainly in the gills, while the digestive gland seems to be rather sensitive to seasonal variability. Particularly, we noticed that among the used biomarkers, MT did not show significant variations in the two tested organs across seasons and sites. From the obtained results, F. glaber appears as a sensitive organism to anthropogenic metal contamination and can be proposed as a promising bioindicator species for marine pollution.

Abstract
The production of bivalve species has been increasing in the last decades. In spite of strict requirements for species declaration, incorrect labelling of bivalve products has repeatedly been detected. We present a DNA metabarcoding method allowing the identification of bivalve species belonging to the bivalve families Mytilidae (mussels), Pectinidae (scallops), and Ostreidae (oysters) in foodstuffs. The method, developed on Illumina instruments, targets a 150 bp fragment of mitochondrial 16S rDNA. We designed seven primers (three primers for mussel species, two primers for scallop species and a primer pair for oyster species) and combined them in a triplex PCR assay. In each of eleven reference samples, the bivalve species was identified correctly. In ten DNA extract mixtures, not only the main component (97.0-98.0%) but also the minor components (0.5-1.5%) were detected correctly, with only a few exceptions. The DNA metabarcoding method was found to be applicable to complex and processed foodstuffs, allowing the identification of bivalves in, e.g., marinated form, in sauces, in seafood mixes and even in instant noodle seafood. The method is highly suitable for food authentication in routine analysis, in particular in combination with a DNA metabarcoding method for mammalian and poultry species published recently.

Abstract
The present study examines the juvenile growth of nine cohorts of Mimachlamys varia in a coastal area of the Ionian Sea, from January 2014 to May 2015. The results showed that M. varia could reach commercial size in less than one year of cultivation, but significant differences in absolute growth rate (AGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) were found among cohorts (p < 0.05). Relationships between scallop growth (size and weight) and environmental variables (water temperature, dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll concentration) were also identified. The length–weight relationship showed negative allometric growth and indicated high correlation with R2, ranging from 0.95 to 0.82. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters showed the highest values of L∞ in the cohorts collected in January, April and February (52.2, 51.2 and 50.3), respectively. The growth performance index (φ’) ranged between 2.52 (cohort collected in June) and 3.03 (cohort collected in August). The obtained data add basic knowledge to the growth performance of this species, making this a good opportunity to facilitate aquaculture diversification in this part of Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract
This study reveals information for the first time about the total lipid (TL) content and fatty acid composition (FA) of Mactra stultorum (M. corallina). Three edible organs (foot, mantle and adductor muscle) were the subjects of this research in order to determine the most favorable periods for their consumption in relation to seasonal variability. The results showed lower lipid content in the adductor muscles in summer (12.73 ± 2.55 mg/g dry matter); while a higher content was observed in winter (28.97 ± 3.50 mg/g dry matter). However, similar lipid contents were observed in the mantle and foot tissues among the seasons. The fatty acid composition of Mactra stultorum adductor muscles, mantle and foot was dominated by saturated fatty acids (SFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Palmitic acid (16:0) was the major saturated fatty acid (SFA) and reached higher levels during summer in the foot (26%), mantle (21%) and adductor muscles (25%). Among PUFA, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) showed significant variation among seasons with high levels recorded during winter and spring. Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) did not show any remarkable variation among seasons for the three studied tissues. Seasonal changes in fatty acids were observed for all samples, reaching a maximum level in winter or spring.

Abstract
This study provides information on biological (gonadosomatic index), commercial quality (condition index and meat yield) and biochemical aspects (proximate composition, fatty acids) of the soft tissues of Flexopecten glaber reared in suspended cages in the Ionian Sea. The results showed that condition index (CI) and meat yield (MY) peaked in December (60 and 30%, respectively) and in April, May and June (from 53 to 60% for CI and from 34 to 36% for MY). Gonadosomatic index showed three main peaks in winter, spring and summer months. Contents of protein 8.18–11.9 g/100 g), lipid (0,.78–1.18 g/100 g) and carbohydrate (1.19–3.30 g/100 g) varied significantly during the study period. Saturated fatty acids was the dominant group, except in December when polyunsaturated fatty acids showed the highest proportion (43% of total FAs). Fatty acids of the n3 group were dominant with docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic acids. Highest n3/n6 ratios were recorded in spring-summer specimens, with values > of 5. The results showed a better nutritional quality of scallops in May, July and December.

Abstract
In this research, one of the most promising scallop species, smooth scallop (Flexopecten glaber) was studied. According to our findings, smooth scallop has beneficial micro and macro minerals, fat and carbohydrate just before the spawning. While the ratios protein, ash and water decreased from autumn to summer, ratio of crude fat increased till reproduction season in late spring and decreased in summer (P<0.05). In digestive glands, aluminum, bromine, cadmium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, and zinc were detected more compared to adductor muscles (P<0.05). However; boron, magnesium and potassium were found more in adductor muscles (P<0.05) and there were no significant statistically differences in cobalt and lead (P>0.05). Most of the elements in the both tissues except K and Mg increased till summer. On the other hand, two of the most toxic metals, cadmium and aluminum were mostly accumulated in the digestive gland of smooth scallop. It is recommended that; digestive gland of scallops should be removed before consuming in terms of food safety. Besides, scallops are convenient to be processed, because of easy removal muscle tissue from internal organs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The dried form of sea cucumbers has been a seafood and medicinal cure for Asians over many centuries. In this study the chemical composition and nutritional quality of eight common sea cucumbers (Stichopus herrmanni, Thelenota ananas, Thelenota anax, Holothuria fuscogilva, Holothuria fuscopunctata, Actinopyga mauritiana, Actinopyga caerulea and Bohadschia argus) were determined. RESULTS All species except T. anax and A. caerulea had higher protein and lower fat levels. A. mauritiana and B. argus had less ash content. Glycine was the dominant amino acid found in all species, and content ranged from 126 to 216 mg g(-1) of crude protein. All species exhibited low lysine:arginine ratio and higher essential amino acid scores were obtained by threonine and phenylalanine + tyrosine. A. mauritiana had proportionally less saturated fatty acids (31.23%), and more monounsaturated fatty acids (45.64%) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA, 23.13%) than other species. Arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6) was the major PUFA in all species. T. ananas, A. mauritiana and A. caerulea contained more n-3 PUFA. The n-3/n-6 ratios of eight sea cucumbers species ranged from 0.25 to 0.61. CONCLUSION Sea cucumbers are a seafood with high protein and low fat levels. The amino acid contents were similar but fatty acid profiles were different among species. The comparison showed that T. ananas, A. mauritiana and B. argus possessed higher nutritional values than other sea cucumber species.
