Abstract
E-commerce platforms have become a significant sales channel for processed tilapia products such as frozen tilapia fillets, pickled tilapia, and canned tilapia in China. As food safety issues are worldwide concerned, the imbalance between the nutritional benefits of fish and the risk of contamination has become a major constraint on fish consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the safety of tilapia products sold on e-commerce platforms. We conducted a quantitative benefit-risk assessment of arsenic and nutrient levels for tilapia products sold on Chinese e-commerce platforms using the hazard quotient (HQ). A total of 147 tilapia products were collected from the central Chinese e-commerce platforms Tmall, Taobao, and Jingdong for arsenic determination. Arsenic concentrations in tilapia products ranged from 0.004 to 0.820 mg·kg-1. The inorganic arsenic content of tilapia products was lower than the national limit (0.1 mg·kg-1). One-way analysis of variance revealed that there was no significant difference in arsenic levels in tilapia products among different regions (p > 0.05), while there was a significant difference in product form, with canned tilapia containing significantly higher arsenic levels than frozen tilapia fillets and pickled tilapia fillets (p < 0.05). We conducted an aquaculture experiment to analyze the nutrient levels of tilapia. The mean value of EPA + DHA content of tilapia was 20.634 mg·100 g-1. The HQ values of tilapia products ranged from 0.004 to 0.736. In a word, the nutritional benefits of consuming tilapia products exceed the risk of arsenic exposure. These data can help demonstrate that tilapia products are low-risk, high-yield nutritious food and provide relevant safety recommendations for consumers purchasing processed tilapia products online.

Abstract
Consumption advice to ensure the health and safety of fish consumers remains urgent to handle the ever-increasing panic over heavy metal toxicity. Moreover, studies of fish consumption rarely focus on the perceptions and awareness of consumers. Considering this, the present study examines the factors determining the willingness to follow fish consumption advice as well as calculate the risk-benefit ratio and produce the vulnerability map followed by formulating fish consumption advice for consumers of two commercially important fish species, tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and mudfish (Ophiocephalus striatus), in the Laguna de Bay area of the Philippines. Primary data on consumers' perceptions were collected through a questionnaire, whereas heavy metal contamination data were compiled from the best available literature. We concluded that people's willingness to adopt consumption advice is mostly dependent on their existing level of fish consumption (P = 0.000). There was no discernible difference in the mean concentration of heavy metals in fish between the dry and wet seasons, with the exception of As concentrations in the samples (t15.75 = 3.72, p < 0.001). The hazard quotient (risk-benefit ratio) for fish consumption (HQefa) was an order of magnitude higher in the mudfish samples (0.05 and 28.28) compared to tilapia (0.04 to 16.02). Binangonan and Taguig from the Northern West Bay (1A, 1B) were clearly recognised on the vulnerability map as the most vulnerable regions in the lake. In general, it was determined that As and Pb were the elements causing consumption restrictions on tilapia collected from various parts of Laguna Lake. As with tilapia, locations with a high-risk advisory for mudfish were identified as the Northern West Bay and Central Bay, with a consumption limit of five meals per month due to excessive mercury pollution. This empirical study can serve as an option for the future development of fish consumption advice in the region.

Abstract
Fish and other seafood are important sources of nutrients, but they are also sources of chemical contaminants that may cause adverse health effects. This article aimed to identify existing risk-benefit assessments (RBA) of fish, shellfish, and other seafood, compare methodologies, discuss differences and commonalities in findings, and identify limitations and ways forward for future studies. We conducted a scoping review of the scientific literature of studies in all languages published from 2000 through April 2019. We identified 106 RBA of fish and other seafood across Europe, Asia, North America, Africa, and at the global level. Studies were heterogeneous in terms of types of fish and other seafood considered, beneficial and adverse compounds assessed, and overall methodology. Collected data showed that a diet consisting of a variety of lean and fatty fish and other seafood is recommended for the overall population and that women of childbearing age and children should limit the consumption of fish and other seafood types that have a high likelihood of contamination. Our review emphasizes the need for evidence-based, up-to-date, and harmonized approaches in RBA in general.

Abstract
The study aimed to investigate temporal trends of "old" and "new" persistent halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in Taihu Lake, the third largest freshwater lake in China, and the associated health risks. Five fish species were consecutively collected from the lake every year during 2011-2018. HOPs including 37 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 10 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs), 19 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 10 new brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), were measured. The results showed that all the HOPs were detected, with MCCPs and NBFRs showing the highest and lowest concentrations, respectively. The levels of SCCPs and MCCPs were several orders of magnitude higher than those of the other HOPs. There were obvious increasing trends for SCCPs, MCCPs, and hexachlorobenzene, but a decreasing trend for PBDEs. No obvious increasing or decreasing trends were observed for the other HOPs. The present study indicated that the use of NBFRs to replace PBDEs was not yet clearly observed. Fish consumption did not result in non-carcinogenic risks, but posed low carcinogenic risks, with PCBs and DDTs being the highest-risk contaminants because of historical residues. This is the first study for the temporal variations of the HOPs in the lake.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as brominated flame retardants. Because of their toxicity and persistence, some PBDEs were restricted under the Stockholm Convention in 2009. Since then, many studies have been carried out on PBDEs in China and in many other countries. In the present review, the occurrences and contamination of PBDEs in air, water, sediment, soil, biota and daily food, human blood, hair, and other human tissues in China are comprehensively reviewed and described. The human exposure pathways and associated health risks of PBDEs are summarized. The data showed no obvious differences between North and South China, but concentrations from West China were generally lower than in East China, which can be mainly attributed to the production and widespread use of PBDEs in eastern regions. High levels of PBDEs were generally observed in the PBDE production facilities (e.g., Jiangsu Province and Shandong Province, East China) and e-waste recycling sites (Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province, East China, and Guiyu City and Qingyuan City, both located in Guangdong Province, South China) and large cities, whereas low levels were detected in rural and less-developed areas, especially in remote regions such as the Tibetan Plateau. Deca-BDE is generally the major congener. Existing problems for PBDE investigations in China are revealed, and further studies are also discussed and anticipated. In particular, non-invasive matrices such as hair should be more thoroughly studied; more accurate estimations of human exposure and health risks should be performed, such as adding bioaccessibility or bioavailability to human exposure assessments; and the degradation products and metabolites of PBDEs in human bodies should receive more attention. More investigations should be carried out to evaluate the quantitative relationships between internal and external exposure so as to provide a scientific basis for ensuring human health.

Abstract
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are highly toxic organic chemicals. Lakes are one of the main sinks of POPs. POPs can be accumulated in multiple matrices in lake ecosystems and biomagnified through the food web, and thus pose a potential threat not only to lake ecosystems, but also to human health. Given their potential persistent risks, they have received much attention over the past decades. This review comprehensively summarizes the data on the levels and distributions of POPs in selected typical lake ecosystems in China and worldwide, involving water, sediments, organisms, and surrounding soils and atmosphere. It was found that current publications on POPs in Chinese lakes are mainly related to lakes in the developed eastern plain area, with only a few studies concerning the less-developed Qinghai-Tibet Plateau area. Similarly, around the world, there are more research on POPs in developed countries and less in relatively less-developed areas. Moreover, there are significant differences in the levels of POPs in different matrices in different lake ecosystems. Legacy POPs, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), were commonly detected and reported in different lakes, while emerging POPs like perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and hexabromocyclododecane (HCBD) were relatively less detected or reported. A comprehensive summarization on the levels and distributions of traditional and emerging POPs in lake ecosystems could be significant for further understanding the behaviors and risks of POPs in lake ecosystems.

Abstract
Parabens are alkyl esters widely used as preservatives in foodstuffs, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Taihu Lake is the third largest freshwater lake in China. However, there is no information available on the occurrence of parabens in Taihu Lake. To investigate contamination of parabens in Taihu Lake and the influence of human activities on contamination levels, 199 fish samples, comprising five species, were collected from Taihu Lake from 2009 to 2017. Five parabens, including methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), butylparaben (BuP), and benzylparaben (BeP), were quantitated using an isotope dilution LC-MS/MS method. The total concentrations of the five parabens ranged from 261 to 1710 pg/g wet weight (ww) with an average of 642 pg/g ww. The predominant compounds were MeP, EtP, and PrP, whose amounts accounted for more than 95% of the total amounts. No significant differences in the concentrations of parabens among the five fish species were observed, suggesting no interspecies differences in bioaccumulation of these compounds. Σ5parabens in fish showed temporal variations with the means ranging between 532 and 772 pg/g ww during years. The levels of parabens were generally consistent with the economic development and urbanization rates of the regions surrounding Taihu Lake. The "typical" and "high" estimated daily intake (EDI) of parabens were 0.53 and 0.91 ng/kg-bw/day for children, and 0.46 and 0.79 ng/kg-bw/day for adults based on calculations using the means and the 95th concentrations, respectively. The EDIs were much lower than the reference dose values, suggesting that there are no obvious health risks posed by fish consumption.

Abstract
Fish consumption benefits early cognitive development and cardiovascular health because of the n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in the fish, but toxic pollutants in fish, like dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), may decrease or counteract these benefits. In this study, the fatty acids, dl-PCBs, and PCDD/Fs were analyzed in paired muscle and skin from 13 fish and one squid species from the Bohai coast, which have been influenced by serious dioxin pollution from the Bohai Rim Region. The total fatty acid concentrations in the muscle and skin were 2.6-87 and 3.6-156 mg/g wet weight (ww), respectively. The total polyunsaturated fatty acid concentrations were higher in skin than muscle for almost half of the species. The total PCDD/F and dl-PCB toxic equivalents in the muscle and skin were 0.055-0.68 and 0.0099-0.43 pg/g ww, respectively, and were up to five times higher in the muscle than in the skin for eight species. Few benefit-risk studies for fish consumption with and without skin have been performed, so benefit-risk quotients (BRQs) for eating only muscle, only skin, and eating both were calculated. To achieve the recommended 250 mg of EPA + DHA intake, eating only muscle, only skin, and eating both from seven species with BRQs < 1 would cause no significant risk. Removing skin before eating is not necessary for these species. Three fish species had BRQs < 1 for muscle only but BRQs > 1 for skin only. Removing skin before eating would be better for these species. The other four fish species had BRQs > 1 for eating only muscle, only skin, and eating both, indicating the potential risk caused by PCDD/F and dl-PCB. Amounts of the four fish species consumed should be decreased, and other sources of EPA and DHA should be selected.

Abstract
Synthetic musks, chemical constituents of personal care products, enter the human body through dermal contact. Elucidation of the mechanisms underlying transdermal permeation of synthetic musks should enhance our understanding of their uptake and distribution in human skin and allow accurate evaluation of associated human exposure. Here, the transdermal permeation dynamics and distribution of galaxolide (HHCB) and tonalide (AHTN) were investigated using an in vitro skin diffusion model. The transdermal permeation amounts of HHCB and AHTN increased rapidly during the first 6 h. The applied HHCB and AHTN amounts did not affect percutaneous absorption rates. HHCB and AHTN remained primarily in the stratum corneum, accounting for 70.0% and 70.3% of the totals during the 24-h period, respectively. The percutaneous absorption rate of both chemicals was ∼11%. HHCB, AHTN, musk ketone, musk xylene, and Musk-T were detected in 29 personal care products. The average total concentrations of the musks were 3990, 54.0, 17.7, and 9.8 μg g-1 in perfume, shampoo, lotion, and shower gel, respectively. Among the four product categories, HHCB was dominant (57.4%-99.6%), followed by AHTN. The data clearly indicate that polycyclic and nitro musks are most commonly used in personal care products. The total estimated dermal intake (51.6 μg kg-1bw day-1) was markedly higher than total dermal uptake (5.9 μg kg-1bw day-1) when percutaneous absorption rates of the chemicals were added into the calculation. Uptake of HHCB and AHTN via dermal contact of personal care products was significantly higher than that from dust inhalation calculated according to earlier literature data.

Abstract
This study examined methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in fish, the daily MeHg exposure dose, and the risk-benefit of MeHg, ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω-3 PUFA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) related to fish intake among pregnant and infertile women in Taiwan. The measured MeHg concentrations in fish did not exceed the Codex guideline level of 1 mg/kg. Swordfish (0.28 ± 0.23 mg/kg) and tuna (0.14 ± 0.13 mg/kg) had the highest MeHg concentrations. The MeHg concentration in the hair of infertile women (1.82 ± 0.14 mg/kg) was significantly greater than that of pregnant women (1.24 ± 0.18 mg/kg). In addition, 80% of infertile women and 68% of pregnant women had MeHg concentrations in hair that exceeded the USEPA reference dose (1 mg/kg). The MeHg concentrations in hair were significantly and positively correlated with the estimated daily MeHg exposure dose. Based on the risk-benefit evaluation results, this paper recommends consumption of fish species with a low MeHg concentration and high concentrations of DHA + EPA and ω-3 PUFA (e.g., salmon, mackerel, and greater amberjack).

Abstract
Analyses of the risks and benefits of consuming fish assess the content of beneficial fatty acids found in fish relative to harmful pollutants such as methylmercury (MeHg). Quantifying the effect of eutrophication on mercury (Hg), selenium (Se) and essential fatty acids (EFAs) in fish is necessary to determine how measures of risk vary with productivity. Total Hg and MeHg, Se and fatty acids, including the EFA eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), were analyzed in Bighead Carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) dorsal muscle tissue from seven subtropical reservoirs of eastern China. Individual elements and fatty acids, as well as derived measures of risk (Se:Hg and hazard quotient, HQ(EFA)) were regressed against indicators of eutrophication, including total phosphorous (TP), chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and phytoplankton species composition. We found low MeHg concentrations (range=0.018-0.13 μg/g ww) and Se concentrations (range=0.12-0.28 μg/g ww), and Se:Hg molar ratios that were well above 1.0, indicating a low risk of Hg toxicity. Bighead Carp had a high content of total polyunsaturated fatty acids (∑PUFAs=44.2-53.6%), which included both EPA (6.9-12.5%) and DHA (16.1-23.2%). However, fish had significantly lower Se:Hg molar ratios in reservoirs with high TP, and lower EPA content with increasing plankton density (i.e. higher chl-a). Phytoplankton species composition predicted Se concentrations, but not Hg concentrations or EFA content. Overall, Hg concentrations in Bighead Carp were very low relative to consumption guidelines, and Se concentrations were adequate to confer protective benefits against MeHg toxicity. Our findings suggest that changes to plankton species composition and density with eutrophication may result in fish of lower nutritional value and thus increase risks to fish consumers by changing the availability of Se and EPA relative to MeHg.

Abstract
Because contaminants and nutrients always coexist in fish, the risk from contaminants and the benefit from nutrients, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are also concomitant via fish consumption. To investigate the risk and benefit via fish consumption, concentrations of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) in the whole- and portion-muscles of fish from Taihu Lake, China, were measured. Based on the contaminant data and nutrients from our previous study, and the associated risk and benefit via fish consumption were estimated. The concentrations of DDTs and HCHs in the whole-muscles ranged from 7.8 × 10² to 3.4×10³ pg g⁻¹ ww, and from 67.3 to 300 pg g⁻¹ ww, respectively. Of DDTs and HCHs measured, p,p'-DDE and β-HCH were respectively the most abundant pesticides. The composition profiles of DDTs and HCHs suggested that the pesticides were mainly historical residues. The benefit-risk quotient (BRQ) of EPA+DHA vs. POPs (persistent organic pollutants including data of DDTs, HCHs, and those of polychlorinated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers cited from our previous study) via consumption of fish from Taihu Lake was calculated. As a result, to achieve the recommended EPA+DHA intake of 250 mg d⁻¹ for a healthy adult, the consumption of most fish species from the lake can cause cancer and non-cancer risks. However, the fish consumption at the rates of 44.9 g d⁻¹ by Chinese would not lead to the risks for most of the species. The results also suggested that the risk of consuming silver carp was generally lower than other fish species, and those of dorsal muscles were lower than ventral and tail muscles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content and decreasing the saturated fatty acid (SFA) content of mutton can help to improve its nutritional value for consumers. Several laboratories have evaluated the effects of vitamin E on the fatty acid (FA) composition of muscle in sheep. However, little information is available on wool sheep, even though wool sheep breeds are an important source of mutton, especially in northern China where sheep are extensively farmed. The present study was designed to address the effects of vitamin E on muscle FA composition in male Aohan fine-wool sheep. METHODS Forty-two male Aohan fine-wool lambs (5 mo old) with similar initial body weight were randomly divided into seven groups and fed diets supplemented with 0 (control group), 20, 100, 200, 1,000, 2,000, or 2,400 IU/sheep/d vitamin E for 12 mo. Three lambs from each group were slaughtered to measure vitamin E and FA content in the longissimus lumborum (LL) and gluteus medius (GM) muscles. RESULTS Vitamin E concentrations in the LL and GM increased significantly after 12 mo of vitamin E supplementation (P < 0.05). However, this increase did not occur in a dose-dependent manner because the muscle vitamin E concentration was highest in the 200 IU/sheep/d group. Dietary vitamin E supplementation also caused a significant reduction in SFA content and an increase in monounsaturated FA (MUFA) content in the LL and GM (P < 0.05). All six doses of vitamin E significantly increased cis9 trans11-conjugated linoleic acid (c9t11-CLA) content in the LL compared with the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Dietary supplementation with vitamin E increased muscle vitamin E content and improved the nutritional value of mutton by decreasing SFA content and increasing MUFA and c9t11-CLA contents in Aohan fine-wool sheep. These effects were greatest in sheep fed a diet containing 200 IU/sheep/d vitamin E.

Abstract
A total of 175 samples of 18 types of food were collected from markets in Shanghai, China, and the concentrations and bioaccessibility of 15 priority-controlled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in these samples were determined. The mean concentrations of PAHs varied between 2.4 and 47.1 ng g(-1) wet weight, with the highest being observed in snail and lowest in chicken. The concentrations were lower than the maximum levels of PAH allowed for food per EU regulations. Among the PAHs measured, phenanthrene was the predominant one. Most of the PAHs originated from pyrogenic sources, analysed using molecular indices. The mean bioaccessibility of PAHs varied from 29.0% to 61.2% as measured by simulating the human gastrointestinal digestion process. Linear relationships between the bioaccessibility and lipid contents were observed for most PAH congeners. The daily intake of PAHs by an average Shanghai resident was 848 ng day(-1) and decreased to 297 ng day(-1) when the bioaccessibility of PAHs were considered, demonstrating that most intake might have been overestimated. According to the potency equivalent concentrations and screening values of PAHs, consumption of snail and clam, especially snail, should be limited.
