Abstract
The utilization of bio-oil derived from biomass presents a promising alternative to fossil fuels, though it faces challenges when directly applied in diesel engines. Microemulsification has emerged as a viable strategy to enhance bio-oil properties, facilitating its use in hybrid fuels. This study explores the microemulsification of Jatropha bio-oil with ethanol, aided by a surfactant, to formulate a hybrid liquid fuel. Additionally, a bio-nano CaO heterogeneous catalyst synthesized from eggshells is employed to catalyse the production of Jatropha biodiesel from the microemulsified fuel using microwave irradiation. The catalyst is characterized through UV-Vis, XRD, and SEM analysis. The investigation reveals a significant reduction in CO, CO2, and NOX emissions with the utilization of microemulsion-based biodiesel blends. Various blends of conventional diesel, Jatropha biodiesel, and ethanol are prepared with different ethanol concentrations (5, 10, and 20 wt%). Engine performance parameters, including fuel consumption, NOX emission, and brake specific fuel consumption, are analyzed. Results indicate that the conventional diesel/Jatropha biodiesel/ethanol (10 wt%) blend exhibits superior performance compared to conventional diesel, Jatropha biodiesel, and other blends. The fuel consumption of the conventional diesel/Jatropha biodiesel/ethanol (10 wt%) blend is measured at 554.6 g/h, surpassing that of conventional diesel and other biodiesel blends. The presence of water (0.14 %) in the blend reduces the heating value, consequently increasing the energy requirement. CO and CO2 emissions for the conventional diesel/Jatropha biodiesel/ethanol (10 wt%) blend are notably lower compared to conventional C-18 hydrocarbons and various biodiesel blends. These findings accentuate the efficacy of the microemulsion process in enhancing fuel characteristics and reducing emissions. Further investigations could explore optimizing the emulsifying agents and their impact on engine performance and emission characteristics, contributing to the advancement of sustainable fuel technologies.

Abstract
Wall material types influence the efficacy of nanocarriers in oral delivery systems. We utilized three food biomacromolecules (whey protein isolate, oxidized starch, lipids) to prepare three types of nanocarriers. Our aim was to investigate their performance in digestion, cellular absorption, mucus penetration, intestinal retention, and bioavailability of the encapsulated anthocyanins (Ant). The release rate of protein nanocarriers (Pro-NCs) was twice that of starch nanocarriers (Sta-NCs) and four times that of lipid nanocarriers (Lip-NCs) in simulated gastrointestinal fluid. Additionally, Pro-NCs demonstrated superior transmembrane transport capacity and over three times cellular internalization efficiency than Sta-NCs and Lip-NCs. Sta-NCs exhibited the highest mucus-penetrating capacity, while Pro-NCs displayed the strongest mucoadhesion, resulting in extended gastrointestinal retention time for Pro-NCs. Sta-NCs significantly enhanced the in vivo bioavailability of Ant, nearly twice that of free Ant. Our results demonstrate the critical role of wall material types in optimizing nanocarriers for the specific delivery of bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Lutein (Lut) is a recognized nutritional supplement known for its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, crucial in mitigating ocular disease. However, enhancements to Lut stability and solubility remain challenges to be addressed in the healthcare industry. Herein, we fabricated and evaluated a food-grade highly porous β-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (β-CD-MOF) for its ability to encapsulate Lut. Lut stability considerably improved when loaded into β-CD-MOF to form a Lut@β-CD-MOF complex, which exhibited better stability than Lut loaded into the γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (Lut@γ-CD-MOF), Lut@β-CD, and commercial product (Blackmores™) at 40°C, 60°C, and 70°C, respectively. The solubility of Lut@β-CD-MOF in water increased by 26.8-fold compared to raw Lut at 37°C. Lut@β-CD-MOF exhibited greater hydrophilicity, as determined by measuring the water contact angle. Molecular docking and other characterizations of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction confirmed that Lut was successfully encapsulated in the chamber formed by the three cyclodextrins in β-CD-MOF. Thermogravimetric analysis and Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that Lut distributed in the β-CD-MOF cavity deeply improved Lut stability and solubility. In conclusion, our findings underscored the function of β-CD-MOF in enhancing Lut stability and solubility for formulation applications.

Abstract
Lipoprotein-derived nanotherapeutics based on endogenous lipid supramolecules have been regarded as an exceptional and promising approach for anti-tumor drug delivery. However, certain challenges associated with the main component apolipoprotein, such as limited availability, high cost, and insufficient specificity of relevant receptor expression, pose significant barriers to its widespread development and application. The objective of this study is to fabricate lipoprotein-mimicking nanocomposites, denoted as CA-P-rHDL by substituting apolipoprotein with chenodeoxycholic acid (CA) modified bovine serum albumin (BSA), and subsequently assess their tumor-targeting capability and anti-tumor efficacy. CA modified BSA (CA-BSA) was successfully synthesized and characterized by quantifying the degree of protein substitution. Subsequently, a nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) mimicking the hydrophobic core of natural lipoproteins was attached with CA-BSA to form a lipoprotein-mimic nanocomplex termed as CA-rHDL. CA-rHDL was endowed with lipoprotein-like structures, favorable particle size, zeta potential and excellent paclitaxel encapsulation (termed as CA-P-rHDL). The internalization of CA-rHDL by HepG2 cells exhibited significantly superior efficiency, with a notably higher in HepG2 cells compared to LO2 cells. Confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed that CA-rHDL evaded lysosomal degradation and was evenly distributed throughout the cells. CCK-8 studies demonstrated that CA-P-rHDL exhibited significantly superior inhibition of tumor cells growth compared to other paclitaxel formulations in vitro. Moreover, in vivo imaging observation in H22 tumor-bearing mouse models exhibited a rapid and consistent accumulation of CA-rHDL within tumors, while CA-P-rHDL demonstrated remarkable efficacy against cancer in these mice. These exceptional capabilities of CA-P-rHDL can be attributed to the synergistic targeting effect facilitated by the combination of CA and BSA, rendering it a promising and versatile drug delivery system for targeted anticancer therapy. Consequently, CA-P-rHDL established a highly potential platform for simulating the reconstitution of supramolecular nanovehicles.

Abstract
A novel polymeric microcapsule was designed and synthesized using perfluoropolyether silane (PFPE-silane) as a superhydrophobic core material and ethyl cellulose (EC) as a shell material. The effects of the stirring rate and the core-to-shell ratio on the synthesized microcapsules were investigated. The physicochemical properties of the polymeric microcapsules were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, laser particle size analysis, and wettability analysis. The results showed that when the stirring rate was 650 rpm and the core-to-shell ratio was 1:1, well-distributed and uniformly dispersed microcapsules could be obtained. The results also indicated that the prepared polymeric microcapsules were spherical particles with micropores on the surface, and they had an average particle size of 165.71 μm. The EC shells could effectively prevent the thermal decomposition of PFPE-silane during cement hydration, and the PFPE-silane also exhibited excellent hydrophobicity. The specially designed structure of this polymeric microcapsule suggests its potential for enhancing the corrosion resistance of reinforced concrete structures.

Abstract
Astaxanthin (ASTA) and zeaxanthin (ZEA) are xanthophyll carotenoids showing a wide spectrum of health-promoting properties. However, their utilization is limited, mostly due to poor water solubility, limited bioavailability, and a tendency to oxidate, as well as photo- and thermal instability. The aim of this work was to develop ASTA- and ZEA-loaded nano-structured lipid carriers (NLCs) that would protect them against degradation and improve their intestinal stability/permeability. Obtained NLCs were characterized by an effective diameter of 294 nm for ASTA-NLC and 280 nm for ZEA-NLC; polydispersity index (PDI) lower than 0.2; and zeta potential of -29.4 mV and -29.0 mV, respectively. Interestingly, despite similar physicochemical characteristics, our investigation revealed differences in the encapsulation efficiency of ASTA-NLC and ZEA-NLC (58.0 % vs. 75.5 %, respectively). Obtained NLCs were stable during a 21 day-storage period in the dark at room temperature or at 4 °C. Investigation of gastrointestinal stability showed no change in effective diameter and PDI under gastric conditions while both parameters significantly changed under intestinal conditions. Our results showed for the first time that both ASTA- and ZEA-NLCs intestinal absorption investigated in the in vitro model is significantly increased (in relation to pure compounds) and is affected by the presence of mucus. This study provides useful data about the advantages of using NLC as a delivery system for ASTA and ZEA that might facilitate their applications in the food and pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract
The substitution of synthetic food dyes with natural colorants continues to be assiduously pursued. The current list of natural carotenoid colorants consists of plant-derived annatto (bixin and norbixin), paprika (capsanthin and capsorubin), saffron (crocin), tomato and gac fruit lycopene, marigold lutein, and red palm oil (α- and β-carotene), along with microalgal Dunaliella β-carotene and Haematococcus astaxanthin and fungal Blakeslea trispora β-carotene and lycopene. Potential microalgal sources are being sought, especially in relation to lutein, for which commercial plant sources are lacking. Research efforts, manifested in numerous reviews and research papers published in the last decade, have been directed to green extraction, microencapsulation/nanoencapsulation, and valorization of processing by-products. Extraction is shifting from conventional extraction with organic solvents to supercritical CO2 extraction and different types of assisted extraction. Initially intended for the stabilization of the highly degradable carotenoids, additional benefits of encapsulation have been demonstrated, especially the improvement of carotenoid solubility and bioavailability. Instead of searching for new higher plant sources, enormous effort has been directed to the utilization of by-products of the fruit and vegetable processing industry, with the application of biorefinery and circular economy concepts. Amidst enormous research activities, however, the gap between research and industrial implementation remains wide.

Abstract
Delivery systems designed through protein stabilized emulsions are promising for incorporating carotenoids in different products. Nevertheless, the versatility in structures of such systems raises questions regarding the effect of the bioactive compound localization on their bio-efficacy, in particular for double emulsions. In this context, the aims of this study were to determine the impact of the localization of lutein in different water/oil/water double emulsions versus a single oil/water emulsion on the stability and in vitro bioaccessibility of lutein, a lipophilic carotenoid. The inner aqueous phase, which contained whey protein isolate (WPI) nanoparticles obtained by desolvation, was emulsified in sunflower oil stabilized by polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR). The primary emulsion was then emulsified in a continuous aqueous phase containing whey protein isolate (WPI) and xanthan gum, the latter to increase the viscosity of the outer phase and delay creaming. Lutein was incorporated using different strategies: (1) lutein entrapped by WPI nanoparticles within the inner water phase of a double emulsion (W-L/O/W); (2) lutein incorporated into the oil phase of the double emulsion (W/O-L/W); (3) lutein incorporated in the oil phase of a single emulsion (O-L/W). All systems contained similar whey protein concentrations, as well as all other stabilizers. W-L/O/W sample showed the lowest lutein stability against light exposure during storage, and the highest lutein bioaccessibility after in vitro digestion, for freshly made samples. Furthermore, the in vitro bioaccessibility of lutein incorporated into the single emulsion was considerably lower than those observed for the double emulsions. The results reinforce the importance of designing appropriate structures for delivering improved stability and bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds.

Abstract
In this study, transglutaminase (TG), glucono-δ-lactone (GDL), and citric acid (CA) were used to induce the formation of whey protein isolate (WPI)-milk fat emulsion gels to embed lutein, and the emulsion gels induced in different ways were used for the preparation of processed cheese. The protective effect of emulsion gels induced in different ways on lutein was investigated, and the stability of lutein in emulsion gels and processed cheese was analyzed. The results showed that the acidification rate of CA was higher than that of GDL, which was the key step in acid-induced gels, and that the difference in acidification rate led to differences in gel structure. Compared with the 2 acid inducers (GDL and CA), TG exhibited greater potential for forming gel structures with high strength. The TG-induced emulsion gels showed the best physical stability and the highest embedding efficiency for lutein. After heat treatment (85°C), the GDL-induced emulsion gels had higher retention rate of lutein and showed good thermal stability compared with the CA-induced emulsion gels. The processed cheese added with the TG-induced emulsion gel had higher hardness and springiness compared with the processed cheese added with the other 2 kinds of emulsion gels, whereas the processed cheese added with the CA-induced emulsion gel had a lower density of network structure, showing porosity and a larger aggregated structure, but the highest bioavailability of lutein. These results provide valuable information for the formation of cold-set emulsion gel and provide the possibility for the application of emulsion gel embedding active substances in processed cheese.

Abstract
Magnetic drug targeting can be a strategy for effectively delivering phytochemicals in cancer treatment. Here, we demonstrate the benefit of magnetic targeting with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles for cytotoxicity enhancement of lutein (LUT) against breast cancer cells. Fabrication of LUT-loaded chitosan/alginate iron oxide nanoparticles (LUT-CS/Alg-Fe3O4-NPs) was optimized by a statistical approach using response surface methodology based on the Box-Behnken design. The optimized LUT-CS/Alg-Fe3O4-NPs with a balance among LUT concentration, copolymer coating, and iron ion concentration exhibited controlled size, narrow size distribution, better crystallinity, excellent saturation magnetization, and sustained-release profile. The negligible magnetic coercivity and remanent magnetization confirmed the superparamagnetism of the prepared NPs. The optimized LUT-CS/Alg-Fe3O4-NPs were biocompatible while exhibiting a significantly enhanced cytotoxicity towards breast cancer MCF-7 cells upon exposure to a permanent magnet compared to free LUT with a 4-fold increase, suggesting the potential of LUT-CS/Alg-Fe3O4-NPs as magnetically targeted delivery for breast cancer.

Abstract
Food nanoemulsions are known as very effective and excellent carriers for both lipophilic and hydrophilic bioactive compounds (BCs) and have been successfully used for controlled delivery and protection of BCs during gastrointestinal digestion (GID). However, due to sensitive and fragile morphology, BCs-loaded nanoemulsions have different digestion pathways depending on their properties, food matrix properties, and applied models for testing their digestibility and BCs bioaccessibility. Thus, this review gives a critical review of the behavior of encapsulated BCs into food nanoemulsions during each phase of GID in different static and dynamic in vitro digestion models, as well as of the influence of nanoemulsion and food matrix properties on BCs bioaccessibility. In the last section, the toxicity and safety of BCs-loaded nanoemulsions evaluated on in vitro and in vivo GID models have also been discussed. Better knowledge of food nanoemulsions' behavior in different models of simulated GI conditions and within different nanoemulsion and food matrix types can help to standardize the protocol for their testing aiming for researchers to compare results and design BCs-loaded nanoemulsions with better performance and higher targeted BCs bioaccessibility.

Abstract
Lutein is critical for protecting the eye against light damage. The low solubility and high sensitivity of lutein to environmental stresses prevent its further application. The hypothesis is that the combination of one water-soluble antioxidant and one oil-soluble antioxidant will be beneficial to improve the stability of lutein emulsions. A low-energy method was performed to prepare lutein emulsions. The combination of a lipid-soluble antioxidant (propyl gallate or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and a water-soluble antioxidant (tea polyphenol or ascobic acid) were investigated for improving the lutein retention rates. It was shown that the highest lutein retention rate was achieved by using propyl gallate and tea polyphenol, 92.57%, at Day 7. It was proven that the lutein retention rates of emulsions with propyl gallate and tea polyphenol were 89.8%, 73.5% and 55.2% at 4 °C, 25 °C and 37 °C, respectively, at Day 28. The current study is helpful to prepare for the further application of lutein emulsions for ocular delivery.

Abstract
Due to people's pursuit of healthy and green life, soy protein isolate (SPI) is occupying a larger and larger market share. However, the low solubility of SPI affects its development in the field of food and medicine. This paper aimed to investigate the effects of sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) on the functional properties and structures of phosphorylated SPI and its lutein-loaded emulsion. After modification by STMP, the phosphorus content of phosphorylated SPI reached 1.2-3.61 mg/g. Infrared spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectrum analysis confirmed that PO4 3- had phosphorylation with -OH in serine of SPI molecule. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that phosphorylation destroyed the crystal structure of protein molecules. Zeta potential value of phosphorylated SPI decreased significantly. When STMP addition was 100 g/kg, particle size of protein solution decreased to 203 nm, and solubility increased to 73.5%. Furthermore, emulsifying activity and emulsifying stability increased by 0.51 times and 8 times, respectively. At the same protein concentration (1%-3% [w/w]), lutein-loaded emulsion prepared by phosphorylated SPI had higher absolute potential and smaller particle size. The phosphorylated protein emulsion at 2% concentration had the best emulsion stability after storage for 17 days. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Phosphorylation significantly improved the emulsifying properties and solubility of SPI. Phosphorylated SPI significantly improved the stability of lutein-loaded emulsion. It provides theoretical basis for the application of phosphorylated SPI as emulsifier in delivery system and broadens the development of lutein in food and medicine field.

Abstract
Oral drug delivery is considered the most preferred mode of treatment because of its high patient compliance and minimal invasiveness. However, the oral delivery of protein drug has been a difficult problem which restricts its application due to the unstable and inefficient penetration of protein in the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, a novel OCMC/SA nanohydrogel was prepared by using of O-carboxymethyl chitosan (OCMC) and sodium alginate (SA) to solve the problem. The OCMC/SA had a typical nanostructure, which was helpful to increase the specific surface area and enhanced the bioavailability of the drugs. OCMC/SA had a high drug loading capacity and realized passive drug targeting function by responding to the different pH value of the microenvironment. It could have a certain protective effect on drugs in strong acid circumstances, while its structure got loosed and effectively released drugs in intestinal circumstances. OCMC/SA could release the drug for >12 h, and the released insulin could maintain high activity. OCMC/SA nanohydrogel showed promising results in type 1 diabetic rats, and its pharmacological bioavailability was 6.57 %. In conclusion, this study constructed a novel OCMC/SA nanohydrogel, which had a lot of exciting characteristics and provided a new strategy for oral drug delivery.

Abstract
In order to improve the water solubility and stability of lutein, soy protein isolates (SPI) and their hydrolysates via pepsin (PSPI) and alcalase (ASPI) were used as nanocarriers for lutein to fabricate the lutein-loaded nanoparticles (LNPS) of SPI, PSPI, and ASPI. The encapsulation properties, light, and in vitro digestive stability of lutein in nanoparticles, and protein-lutein interactions were investigated. Compared with SPI-LNPS and ASPI-LNPS, PSPI-LNPS was characterized by uniform morphology (approximately 115 nm) with a lower polydispersity index (approximately 0.11) and higher lutein loading capacity (17.96 μg/mg protein). In addition, PSPI-LNPS presented the higher lutein retention rate after light exposure (85.05%) and simulated digestion (77.73%) than the unencapsulated lutein and SPI-LNPS. Fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that PSPI had stronger hydrophobic interaction with lutein than SPI, which positively correlated with their beneficial effects on the light and digestive stability of lutein. This study demonstrated that PSPI possessed significant potential for lutein delivery.

Abstract
Due to the unstable chemical properties and poor water solubility of carotenoids, their processing adaptation and oral bioavailability are poor, limiting their application in hydrophilic food systems. Lipid-biomacromolecular compounds can be excellent carriers for carotenoid delivery by taking full advantage of the solubilization of lipids to non-polar nutrients and the water dispersion and gastrointestinal controlled release properties of biomacromolecules. This paper reviewed the research progress of lipid-biomacromolecular compounds as encapsulation and delivery carriers of carotenoids and summarized the material selection and preparation methods for biomacromolecular compounds. By considering the interaction between the two, this paper briefly discussed the effect of these compounds on carotenoid water solubility, stability, and bioavailability, emphasizing their delivery effect on carotenoids. Finally, various challenges and future trends of lipid-biomacromolecular compounds as carotenoid delivery carriers were discussed, providing new insight into efficient loading and delivery of carotenoids.

Abstract
Lipophilic nutrients are known to have relatively poor absorption, thus limiting their bioaccessibility. Consequently, researchers in food and pharmaceutical areas are exploring different techniques to promote the efficient delivery of lipophilic nutrients. The effects of two polar lipids, namely mono-, di-glycerides (MDG) and lecithin (PL), on the bioaccessibility of lipophilic nutrients were investigated in this study with a protein-based emulsion model system. During the emulsion preparation and formation, the incorporation of MDG/PL was found to benefit the dissolution and stabilization of lipophilic nutrients, such as lutein, and could also modify the construction of the emulsion surface. An in vitro digestion study showed that the use of MDG/PL could significantly increase the bioaccessibility of lipophilic nutrients [lutein, vitamin E, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] by 13.52%, 186.90%, and 36.17% in a protein-based emulsion system. The use of MDG and PL decreased the interfacial tension in all the samples: protein only 20.65 mN m-1, protein-PL 6.47 mN m-1, and protein-MDG/PL 4.23 mN m-1, as well as 12.11 mN m-1, 1.26 mN m-1 and 1.16 mN m-1 with the presence of bile salts. Caco-2 cell culture results showed that, with the application of MDG/PL, the absorption rate of micelles was higher than that in the other groups and this resulted in a 70% absorption increase for lutein. Therefore, MDG/PL can improve the lipophilic nutrient absorption via promoting the affinity of formed micelles to the enterocytes of the small intestine. This study exhibited the effectiveness of MDG/PL on improving the bioaccessibility of lipophilic nutrients in a protein-based emulsion system mimicking the digestion and absorption fate of breast milk in an infant's gastric intestinal tract, thus suggesting that MDG/PL can be used as a technical pathway to improve the absorption of lipophilic nutrients.

Abstract
Phytochemicals are relatively small molecular species found in edible plants that may exhibit a diverse range of techno- and biofunctional attributes. In particular, there has been great interest in the identification, isolation, and utilization of dietary phytochemicals that can be used as natural pigments, antioxidants, or antimicrobials or that may improve human health and wellbeing by preventing chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Relatively high levels of these phytochemicals are often present in the waste streams produced by the food and agriculture industry, such as the peels, stems, roots, or leaves of plants, that are normally discarded or turned into animal foods. From an economic and environmental perspective, it would be advantageous to convert these waste streams into value-added functional ingredients, which is consistent with the creation of a more circular economy. Bioactive phytochemicals can be isolated from agricultural and food waste streams using green extraction methods and then incorporated into plant-based functional foods or biodegradable active packaging materials. The utilization of phytochemicals in the food industry is often challenging. They may chemically degrade in the presence of light, heat, oxygen, and some pH conditions, thereby altering their biological activity. They may have low solubility in aqueous solutions and gastrointestinal fluids, thereby making them difficult to introduce into foods and leading to a low bioavailability. These challenges can sometimes be overcome using nanoencapsulation, which involves trapping the phytochemicals inside tiny food-grade particles. These nanoparticles may be assembled from edible lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and/or surfactants and include nanoemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanoliposomes, and biopolymer nanoparticles. In this manuscript, we review a number of important phytochemicals and nanoencapsulation methods used to improve their efficacy.

Abstract
In this study, the interaction of ovalbumin with lutein dipalmitate and the effect of ovalbumin on marigold lutein esters extracts were investigated. Lutein dipalmitate quenched the fluorescence of ovalbumin by static quenching. Binding and thermodynamic parameters proved that lutein dipalmitate bound to ovalbumin spontaneously by van der Waals force and hydrogen bond, and the complex stoichiometry was 1:1. Through three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and circular dichroism experiments, the conformation of ovalbumin was unfolded, and alteration in the ovalbumin secondary structure induced by lutein dipalmitate was observed. The results of transmission electron microscopy and particle size revealed that there were spherical and nano-sized aggregates in the ovalbumin-lutein dipalmitate system, indicating the lutein dipalmitate not only could bind to ovalbumin at molecular level, but also promote the aggregation of ovalbumin. Additionally, the addition of ovalbumin had a positive effect on the stability of marigold lutein esters extracts.

Abstract
The consumption of foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals including carotenoids etc. can boost the immune system to help fight off various infections including SARS- CoV 2 and other viruses. Carotenoids have been gaining attention particularly in food and pharmaceutical industries owing to their diverse functions including their role as pro-vitamin A activity, potent antioxidant properties, and quenching of reactive oxygen (ROS), such as singlet oxygen and lipid peroxides within the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane. Nevertheless, carotenoids being lipophilic, have poor solubility in aqueous medium and are also chemically instable. They are susceptible to degrade under stimuli environmental conditions during food processing, storage and gastrointestinal passage. They also exhibit poor oral bioavailability, thus, their applications in aqueous-based foods are limited. As a consequent, suitable delivery systems including colloids-based are needed to enhance the solubility, stability and bioavailability of carotenoids. This review presents challenges of incorporation and delivery of carotenoids focusing on stability and factors affecting bioavailability. Furthermore, designed factors impacting bioaccessibility and bioavailability of carotenoids using emulsion-based delivery systems are explicitly explained. Each delivery system exhibits its own advantages and disadvantages; thus, the delivery systems should be designed based on their targets and their further applications.

Abstract
Although safe and eco-friendly botanical pesticides have been intensively promoted to combat pest attacks in agriculture, but their stability and efficacies remain an issue for their wide acceptability as sustained and effective approaches. The purpose of this work was to develop stable neem oil based nano-emulsion (NE) formulation with enhanced activity employing suitable bio-inspired adjuvant. So, Neem NEs (with and without) natural adjuvants (Cymbopogon citratus and Prosopis juliflora) in different concentrations were prepared and quality parameters dictating kinetic stability, acidity/alkalinity, viscosity, droplet size, zeta potential, surface tension, stability and compatibility were monitored using Viscometer, Zetasizer, Surface Tensiometer, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Nano-emulsion biosynthesis optimization studies suggested that slightly acidic (5.9-6.5) NE is kinetically stable with no phase separation; creaming or crystallization may be due to botanical adjuvant (lemongrass oil). Findings proved that Prosopis juliflora, acted as bio-polymeric adjuvant to stabilize NE by increasing Brownian motion and weakening the attractive forces with smaller droplets (25-50 nm), low zeta potential (-30 mV) and poly-dispersive index (<0.3). Botanical adjuvant (30%) based NE with optimum viscosity (98.8cPs) can give long term storage stability and improved adhesiveness and wetting with reduced surface tension and contact angle. FT-IR analysis assured azadirachtin's stability and compatibility with adjuvant. With negligible degradation (1.42%) and higher half-life (t1/2) of 492.95 days, natural adjuvant based NE is substantially stable formulation, may be due to presence of glycosidic and phenolics compounds. Neem 20NE (with 30% adjuvant) exhibited remarkable insecticidal activity (91.24%) against whitefly (Bemisia tabaci G.) in brinjal (Solanum melongena) as evidenced by in-vivo assay. Results thus obtained suggest, bio-pesticide formulation may be used as safer alternative to chemical pesticides to minimize pesticide residues and presence of natural adjuvant may improves the stability and efficacy of biopesticides for safe crop protection in organic agriculture and Integrated Pest Management.

Abstract
The biggest obstacle to the treatment of diseases that affect the central nervous system (CNS) is the passage of drugs across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), a physical barrier that regulates the entry of substances into the brain and ensures the homeostasis of the CNS. This review summarizes current research on lipid-based nanoparticles for the nanoencapsulation of neuroprotective compounds. A survey of studies on nanoemulsions (NEs), nanoliposomes/nanophytosomes and solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs)/nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) was carried out and is discussed herein, with particular emphasis upon their unique characteristics, the most important parameters influencing the formulation of each one, and examples of neuroprotective compounds/extracts nanoencapsulated using these nanoparticles. Gastrointestinal absorption is also discussed, as it may pose some obstacles for the absorption of free and nanoencapsulated neuroprotective compounds into the bloodstream, consequently hampering drug concentration in the brain. The transport mechanisms through which compounds or nanoparticles may cross BBB into the brain parenchyma, and the potential to increase drug bioavailability, are also discussed. Additionally, factors contributing to BBB disruption and neurodegeneration are described. Finally, the advantages of, and obstacles to, conventional and unconventional routes of administration to deliver nanoencapsulated neuroprotective drugs to the brain are also discussed, taking into account the avoidance of first-pass metabolism, onset of action, ability to bypass the BBB and concentration of the drug in the brain.

Abstract
The effective delivery of bioactive compounds has recently been receiving attention. In this study, a conjugate with BSA and fucoidan synthesized via the Maillard reaction was confirmed through electrophoresis, the o-phthalaldehyde assay, and through changes in absorbance. Two moles of fucoidan were glycated with one mole of BSA at 60 °C and 79% relative humidity for 4 days. The droplet coated with B-F conjugate remained stable during storage at 4 and 25 °C and slightly increased only at 55 °C however, the droplet coated with intact BSA and B/F mixture significantly increased. L/Z were degraded about 82, 79, and 36% for 4, 25, and 55 °C, respectively, regardless of the type of emulsifier. Although the conjugates could not prevent the degradation of lutein and zeaxanthin during storage, they improved the stability of the emulsion and showed 4.20-fold and 1.32-fold higher bioaccessibility than intact BSA and B/F mixtures, respectively.

Abstract
Betalains are violet-red, natural food grade pigments with health benefits; however, their stability limits its use in industrial food processing. This can be overcome by placing the betalains in lecithin nanoliposomes (NLs), which causes a 76% improvement of betalain colour and stability. Extended sonication time (8 min) lowered the zeta potential (-47.5 to -40.8), and particle size (74.23 to 55.35 nm). Zeta potential, particle size, and polydispersity index of Betalain NLs (BNLs) didn't change significantly during storage (40 days). Degradation in the colour of BNLs was observed only at 121 °C (20 min) while the native juice degraded at 100 °C (20 min). BNLs were incorporated in gummy candies (GuCa) to improve its colour stability. The betalain retention, colour, texture, antioxidant activity, and shelf-life of the GuCa during storage (5 °C, 28 days) demonstrated the efficacy of BNLs to be explored as a natural colourant for the food industry.

Abstract
Acquisition of a healthy lifestyle through diet has driven the food manufacturing industry to produce new food products with high nutritional quality. In this sense, consumption of bioactive compounds has been associated with a decreased risk of suffering chronic diseases. Nonetheless, due to their low solubility in aqueous matrices, high instability in food products during processing and preparation as well as poor bioavailability, the use of such compounds is sometimes limited. Recent advancements in encapsulation and protection of bioactive compounds has opened new possibilities for the development of novel food products. In this direction, the present review is attempting to describe encapsulation achievements, with special attention to nanostructured lipid-based delivery systems, i.e., nanoemulsions, multi-layer emulsions and liposomes. Functionality of bioactive compounds is directly associated with their bioavailability, which in turn is governed by several complex processes, including the passage through the gastrointestinal tract and transport to epithelial cells. Therefore, an overview of recent research on the properties of these nanostructured lipid-based delivery systems with a strong impact on the functionality of bioactive compounds will be also provided. Nanostructured lipid-based delivery systems might be used as a potential option to enhance the solubility, stability, absorption and, ultimately, functionality of bioactive compounds. Several studies have been performed in this line, modifying the composition of the nanostructures, such as the lipid-type or surfactants. Overall, influencing factors and strategies to improve the efficacy of encapsulated bioactive compounds within nanostructures have been successfully identified. This knowledge can be used to design effective targeted nanostructured lipid-based delivery systems for bioactive compounds. However, there is still a lack of information on food interactions, toxicity and long-term consumption of such nanostructures.

Abstract
To overcome the poor stability of natural lutein to environmental factors, layered double hydroxide was incorporated by a green mechanical grinding process. The influences of external factors (chemical reagents, heating and light) on the stability of lutein before and after being loaded were evaluated. The results confirmed that lutein was mainly adsorbed on the surface of layered double hydroxide (LDH) via the chemical interaction. Compared with pure lutein, the thermal decomposition of lutein/LDH was improved from 100 °C to 300 °C, and the retention ratio of lutein was increased by about 8.64% and 21.47% after 96 h of light exposure and accelerated degradation, respectively. It is expected that the stable lutein/LDH composites may constitutean additive in animal feed.

Abstract
Background: Lutein is the primary macular pigment with an favorable effect on the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, the poor water solubility of lutein hinders its absorption and delivery. In this study, a penetratin-modified lutein nanoemulsion in-situ gel (GEL) was prepared for the treatment of AMD.Methods: A nanoemulsion (NE) was prepared and modified with penetratin (P-NE) to improve the penetration. The effect of penetratin was evaluated by cell uptake and intraocular distribution assays. A dry AMD model was induced using NaIO3, and the therapeutic effect was evaluated by electroretinography, the number of apoptosis cells and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level.Results: Lutein showed a good ability to protect ARPE-19 from the damage of H2O2 and the uptake rate of P-NE was significantly higher than NE. In the efficacy experiments, the structure of retina was significantly improved after treatment, the apoptosis rate decreased from 31.98% to 2.05%, and the level of ROS was significantly decreased (p < 0.0001).Conclusions: With the aid of penetratin, lutein could be delivered to the retina effectively. The P-NE GEL could evidently inhibit the apoptosis and ROS, demonstrating that the P-NE GEL has a good application prospect in the treatment of AMD.

Abstract
Lutein, a potent dietary carotenoid, has considerable biological activity and confers protection against age-related macular degeneration. Its bioavailability following consumption, however, depends on its rate of degradation. Nanodelivery systems with improved efficacy and stability are currently being developed to increase the bioavailability of lutein. This review examines nutraceutical approaches used in the development of such nanodelivery systems. It describes the methods of lutein preparation, the characteristics of various delivery systems, and the lutein delivery profile. In order to enhance lutein loading, provide electrostatic stabilization, and achieve the controlled release of lutein, adjuvants such as dextran moieties, whey proteins, medium-chain triglycerides, and chitosan polymers can be used to effectively reduce the particle size (< 70 nm) and improve encapsulation efficiency (to 99.5%). The improved bioavailability of lutein via nanocrystals incorporated into rapidly dissolving films for oral consumption is a new area of exploratory research. This review aims to provide clarity about current research aimed at enhancing the bioavailability of lutein through the development of nanodelivery systems.

Abstract
Carotenoids retain plenty of health benefits and attracting much attention recently, but they have less resistance to processing stresses, easily oxidized and chemically unstable. Additionally, their application in food and pharmaceuticals are restricted due to some limitations such as poor bioavailability, less solubility and quick release. Nanoencapsulation techniques can be used to protect the carotenoids and to uphold their original characteristics during processing, storage and digestion, improve their physiochemical properties and enhance their health promoting effects. The importance of nanocarriers in foods and pharmaceuticals cannot be denied. This review comprehensively covers recent advances in nanoencapsulation of carotenoids with biopolymeric nanocarriers (polysaccharides and proteins), and lipid-based nanocarriers, their functionalities, aptness and innovative developments in preparation strategies. Furthermore, the present state of the art encapsulation of different carotenoids via biopolymeric and lipid-based nanocarriers have been enclosed and tabulated well. Nanoencapsulation has a vast range of applications for protection of carotenoids. Polysaccharides in combination with different proteins can offer a great avenue to achieve the desired formulation for encapsulation of carotenoids by using different nanoencapsulation strategies. In terms of lipid based nanocarriers, solid lipid nanoparticles and nanostructure lipid carriers are proving as the encouraging candidates for entrapment of carotenoids. Additionally, nanoliposomes and nanoemulsion are also promising and novel-vehicles for the protection of carotenoids against challenging aspects as well as offering an effectual controlled release on the targeted sites. In the future, further studies could be conducted for exploring the application of nanoencapsulated systems in food and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) for industrial applications.

Abstract
Lutein is incorporated into foods as a natural yellow pigment and nutraceutical. The introduction of lutein into many foods and beverages, however, is problematic because of its strong hydrophobicity and poor chemical stability. In this research, lutein-loaded nanoemulsions were prepared to overcome this problem. Casein-dextran Maillard conjugates or physical complexes were utilized as emulsifiers, while either medium chain triglycerides (MCT) or grape seed oil (GSO) were used as carrier oils. The impact of resveratrol addition on nanoemulsion stability was also examined. The influence of storage temperature, pH, and CaCl2 concentration on the chemical and physical stability of the nanoemulsions was measured. The casein-dextran conjugates were highly effective at improving the physical resistance of the nanoemulsions to environmental stresses, but had a detrimental effect on their color stability. Conversely, nanoemulsions prepared from casein-dextran physical complexes were unstable around the protein's isoelectric point (pH 4.6), as well as upon addition of CaCl2 . Incorporation of resveratrol and GSO into the nanoemulsions decreased lutein degradation and color fading at all temperatures. This study shows that casein-dextran conjugates are highly effective at improving the physical stability of lutein-loaded nanoemulsions, while resveratrol and GSO are effective at improving their chemical stability. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Lutein can be used by the food industry to create "clean label" and functional food products. The major challenges in incorporating lutein in foods are its poor chemical stability and its high hydrophobicity, which makes it difficult to incorporate. Emulsion-based delivery systems assembled from natural ingredients may address these challenges. In this study, the impact of Maillard conjugates fabricated from caseinate and dextran, as well as resveratrol addition, on the formation and stability of lutein-enriched nanoemulsions was determined. The information obtained from this study will help the formulation of more effective functional foods and beverage products.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown that the high susceptibility of flaxseed oil nanoemulsions to lipid oxidation limits their incorporation into functional foods and beverages. For this reason, the impact of various flaxseed phenolic extracts on the physical and oxidative stability of flaxseed oil nanoemulsions was investigated. Flaxseed lignan extract (FLE) and secoisolariciresinol (SECO) exhibited antioxidant activity whereas secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) and p-coumaric acid (CouA) exhibited prooxidant activity in the flaxseed oil nanoemulsions. The antioxidant potential of flaxseed phenolics in the nanoemulsions was as follows: SECO < CouA < SDG ≈ FLE. Moreover, the antioxidant/prooxidant activity of the phenolics was also related to their free radical scavenging activity and partitioning in the nanoemulsions. Our results suggested that both SECO and FLE were good plant-based antioxidants for improving the stability of flaxseed oil nanoemulsions.

Abstract
Nanotechnology has become an option for the encapsulation of compounds, such as carotenoids. However, for the incorporation in to food, it is necessary to develop nanometric systems that are stable under the different conditions to which the food is submitted during its production, transport, and storage. Thus, with the intent to develop a stable nanoemulsion formulation for food application, the physical and chemical stability of β-carotene nanoemulsions after thermal treatments and storage under different conditions, were investigated in this work. The β-carotene nanoemulsions were formulated with corn oil, by applying high-pressure homogenization, with an average size in the 300 nm range, which is within the appropriate scale for industrial preparations, such as foods and cosmetics. The nanoemulsion droplets had negative charge (more than -25 mV) and monodisperse profile. The sample were pasteurized, sterilized, and stored at 4, 25, and 37 °C in the presence and absence of light for up to 90 days. Following the heat treatments and storage, the nanoemulsions showed no evidence of physical destabilization, retaining 70-80% of the carotenoid after the pasteurization and sterilization processes, and 70% when stored at 4 °C without light, respectively. Overall, our findings provide new information about the physical and chemical stability of β-carotene nanoemulsions during traditional thermal processes and environmental conditions.

Abstract
Astaxanthin, a natural pigment carotenoid, is well known for its potential benefits to human health. However, its applications in the food industry are limited, due to its poor water-solubility and chemical instability. Six different emulsifiers were used to prepare astaxanthin-loaded emulsions, including whey protein isolate (WPI), polymerized whey protein (PWP), WPI-lecithin, PWP-lecithin, lecithin, and Tween20. The droplet size, zeta potential, storage stability, cytotoxicity, and astaxanthin uptake by Caco-2 cells were all investigated. The results showed that the droplet size of the emulsions ranged from 194 to 287 nm, depending on the type of emulsifier used. The entrapment efficiency of astaxanthin was as high as 90%. The astaxanthin-loaded emulsions showed good physicochemical stability during storage at 4 °C. The emulsifier type had a significant impact on the degradation rate of astaxanthin (p < 0.05). Cellular uptake of astaxanthin encapsulated into the emulsions was significantly higher than free astaxanthin (p < 0.05). Emulsion stabilized with WPI had the highest cellular uptake of astaxanthin (10.0 ± 0.2%), followed, in order, by that with PWP (8.49 ± 0.1%), WPI-lecithin (5.97 ± 0.1%), PWP-lecithin (5.05 ± 0.1%), lecithin (3.37 ± 0.2%), and Tween 20 (2.1 ± 0.1%). Results indicate that the whey protein-based emulsion has a high potential for improving the cellular uptake of astaxanthin.

Abstract
The application of lutein was limited due to water insolubility and susceptible to heat and light degradation. In this study, hyaluronic acid (HA)-coated PLGA nanoparticles encapsulating lutein were fabricated by a solvent displacement method to improve the physicochemical properties and the stability of lutein. A biphasic release profile of lutein was observed, following zero-order release kinetics. The physical stability of lutein stored at 4°C, 30°C, and 40°C for 30 days was enhanced when lutein was encapsulated in the nanoparticles. The degradation of lutein in PLGA NPs coated with HA was fitted to a second-order kinetic model. The rate constant increased with increasing storage temperature. The activation energy of lutein-NPs was 63.26 kJ/mol. The half-lives of lutein in PLGA-NPs were about 49, 4, and 2 days at a storage temperature of 4°C, 30°C, and 40°C, respectively. The results suggested that lutein-NPs should be stored at 4°C to prevent physical and chemical degradation. The photodegradation of lutein in NPs followed a second-order kinetic model. The rate constant was 0.0155 mg-1 ml day-1. Cell viability study revealed that HA-coated PLGA nanoparticles encapsulating lutein did not show toxicity against retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19). The NPs bound ARPE-19 cells in a time- and a dose-dependent manner. The binding efficiency of lutein-NPs decreased at higher concentrations, suggesting that the NPs might reach binding saturation capacity. In conclusion, HA-coated PLGA nanoparticles could be used to deliver lutein and improved physicochemical property of lutein. Graphical abstract ᅟ.
