Biohybrid Adsorbent for the Preconcentration of Lead and Its Determination in Fruit Juices by Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

BACKGROUND

Fruit juices are one of the most non-alcoholic beverages consumed in the world. Essential elements and other nutrients present in fruit juices play an important role in human well-being. However, fruit juices may also contain potentially toxic elements at trace levels, causing health risks.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this work was to develop an analytical methodology based on the preconcentration of lead using a new biodegradable hybrid material (BHM) composed of Rhodococcus erythropolis AW3 bacteria and Brassica napus hairy roots.

METHODS

The BHM was implemented in an online solid-phase extraction (SPE) system for the determination of lead in fruit juices by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS).

RESULTS

Effects of critical parameters on lead retention were studied. Under optimal experimental conditions, extraction efficiency higher than 99.9% and an enrichment factor of 62.5 were achieved. The dynamic capacity of the BHM was 36 mg/g, which favored the reuse of the column for at least eight biosorption-desorption cycles. The LOD and LOQ for preconcentration of 5 mL of sample were 5.0 and 16.5 ng/L lead, respectively. The RSD was 4.8% (at 1 µg/L lead and n = 10).

CONCLUSION

The developed method was suitable for application to lead determination in different types of fruit juice.

Brine available two-dimensional nano-architectonics of fluorescent probe based on phosphate doped ZIF-L for detection of Fe3

Herein, we propose a simple and effective strategy for designing a zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) fluorescent probe with a two-dimensional leaf-like structure. By doping ZIF-L with phosphate, we developed a fluorescent probe for iron (Fe3+) in systems with high salinity. The fluorescence of P-ZIF-L was quenched effectively with the presence of Fe3+. The physicochemical structure, surface morphology, selectivity, stability and composition of the probe were investigated. Under optimized conditions, the fluorescent probe had a detection limit of 0.5 μM. Furthermore, the results that the probe exhibited desirable salt-tolerance and was suitable for determination of Fe3+ in brine water samples with satisfactory results.

A fungal functionalized magnetized solid phase extractor for preconcentrations of Pb(II), Mn(II), and Co(II) from real samples

Due to increasing industrialization and overpopulation, the amount of toxic metals is increasing in the environment, including air, soil, water, and food. Solid phase extraction is an efficient and ideal technique to preconcentrate the toxic metals before their measurements by analytical instruments. Russula brevipes was immobilized on γ-Fe₂O₃ magnetic nanoparticles and employed as a SPE sorbent to preconcentrate the trace level of Pb(II), Mn(II), and Co(II). To investigate the extraction conditions, significant experimental parameters were examined in details. LODs were calculated as 0.022, 0.015, and 0.024 ng mL^-1 for Pb(II), Mn(II), and Co(II), respectively. The biosorption capacities of R. brevipes immobilized γ-Fe₂O₃ were calculated as 43.1 mg g^-1 for Pb(II), 54.9 mg g^-1 for Mn(II), and 49.7 mg g^-1 for Co(II). Pb(II), Mn(II), and Co(II) in food samples at trace levels were preconcentrated by applying the developed method.

Hybrid biomaterials to preconcentrate and determine toxic metals and metalloids: a review

Toxic elements represent a serious threat to the environment and cause harmful effects on different environmental components, even at trace levels. These toxic elements are often difficult to detect through the typical instrumentation of an analytical laboratory because they are found at very low concentrations in matrices such as food and water. Therefore, preconcentration plays a fundamental role since it allows the effects of the matrix to be minimized, thus reaching lower detection limits and greater sensitivity of detection techniques. In recent years, solid-phase extraction has been successfully used for the preconcentration of metals as an environmentally friendly technique due to the fact that it eliminates or minimizes the use of reagents and solvents and offers reduced analysis times and low generation of waste in the laboratory. Hybrid biomaterials are low-cost, eco-friendly, and useful as efficient solid phases for the preconcentration of elements. In this review, recent investigations based on the use of hybrid biomaterials for the preconcentration and determination of toxic metals are presented and discussed, given special attention to bionanomaterials. A brief description of hybrid biomaterials often used for analytical purposes, as well as analytical techniques mostly used to characterize the hybrid biomaterials, is explained. Finally, the future prospects that encourage the search for new hybrid biomaterials are commented upon.

Anoxybacillus flavithermus loaded ɣ-Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles as an efficient magnetic sorbent for the preconcentrations of Cu(II) and Mn(II)

It was hypothesized that -iron( oxide nanoparticles (ɣ-Fe₂O₃ NPs) functionalized with Anoxybacillus flavithermus (A. flavithermus) as an effective magnetic sorbent for the preconcentrations of toxic metal ions. It is clear to conclude that the main novelty of this study is that ɣ-Fe₂O₃ NPs loaded with A. flavithermus is selective-specific for Cu(II), Mn(II). Structural functional groups of the samples were elucidated by FTIR, and SEM. Significant experimental parameters were investigated in detail. 0.2 mL min^-1 of flow rate, 5 mL of 1 M of hydrochloric acid as eluent, 150 mg biogenic mass sample, and 150 mg ɣ-Fe₂O₃ NPs for supporting material were found as the best conditions. This developed method has been tested and verified using certified and standard reference materials. As a result of the studies, the pre-concentration factor of the Cu(II), Mn(II) metals was calculated as 40. All measurements showed that the developed solid-phase extraction (SPE) columns are available for 32 cycles. The use of ɣ-Fe₂O₃ NPs equipped with A. flavithermus as an effective magnetic sorbent for the first measurements of ions was thoroughly studied. In order of the biosorption capacities were calculated as 26.0, and 30.3 mg/g for Cu(II), Mn(II), respectively. The developed method for specifying the samples showed excellent to excellent results.

Application of electrocolorimetric extraction for the determination of Ni(II) ions in chocolate samples: A green methodology for food analysis

This study developed an electrocolorimetric extraction technique as a simple, rapid, and green method for the simultaneous preconcentration and determination of Ni(II) in chocolate samples. The system was designed using an agarose gel (3% w/v) solution containing 10% v/v 80 mM dimethylglyoxime (DMG) and 10% v/v 0.03 M ammonia as colorimetric reagents to determine Ni(II) ions. When voltage was applied to the system, Ni(II) ions were extracted from the donor solution into the gel and formed Ni-DMG complexes with a pink color. Under the optimal conditions, a good linear range was obtained from 30 to 750 µg L^-1 (R² > 0.998) with a detection limit of 1 µg L^-1. Inter- and intra-assay results showing relative standard deviations were less than 2.6% and 1.9%, respectively. Our developed method was applied to determine Ni(II) in chocolate samples. The results were in agreement with those obtained using ICP-OES.

Polymeric Biomass Derived Adsorbents for Co(II) Remediation, Recycling and Analysis

The gradual replacement of conventional materials with materials tailored to the green development goals is one of the needs of the day. Correspondingly, this article reviews and integrates, for the first time, the gathered knowledge on the use of the adsorbents based on polymeric biomasses (biosorbents) for a cleaner separation of cobalt (Co) from synthetic and actual solutions. It is a two-part comprehensive approach that debates the Co biosorption potential of bio-based polymers from the perspective of their virtual and real applications for decontamination, recovery, and analytical purposes. First, the removal performances of these materials to batch and fixed column biosorption of Co(II) from mono-component and multi-metallic laboratory solutions are systematized and discussed. Following that, the focus of the first part is shifted to the analytical capabilities of the biosorbents proposed for Co(II) quantification from synthetic solutions. The second section considers the polymeric biomasses successfully incorporated in practical strategies for the removal and recovery of Co(II) from real solutions. The opportunities provided by the use of biosorbents for the development of accurate and greener procedures in Co(II) analysis are also highlighted. The directions in which the research on this topic should be continued and strengthened are suggested.

Facile and High-yield Synthesis of N-doped Carbon Quantum Dots from Biomass Quinoa Saponin for the Detection of Co2

Hydrothermal synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from natural biomass is a green and sustainable route for CQDs applications in various fields. In this work, the preparation and characterization of CQDs based on quinoa saponin were investigated. The optimum synthetic conditions determined by orthogonal experiments were as follows: 2 g quinoa saponin powder and 0.04 mol ethylenediamine reacted at 200°C for 10 h. The relative fluorescence quantum yield (QY = 22.2%) can be obtained, which is higher than some results reported in the literatures. The prepared CQDs had a small and uniform size (∼2.25 nm) and exhibited excitation wavelength-dependent blue light emission behavior. The CQDs displayed excellent sensitivity for Co²⁺ detection along with good linear correlation ranging from 20 to 150 µM and the detection limit of 0.49 µM. The CQDs prepared in this experiment were successfully implanted into soybean sprouts for fluorescence imaging. The sprouts could grow healthily even soaked in the CQDs solution for two weeks, demonstrating the low toxicity of the CQDs. The advantages of the CQDs, such as low cost, ease of manufacture, nontoxicity, and stability, have potential applications in many areas such as metal ion detection and biosensing.

Investigation of the Conditions for Preconcentration of Cadmium Ions by Solid Phase Extraction Method Using Modified Juglans regia L. Shells

BACKGROUND

Juglans regia L. shells as agricultural waste can be considered as alternative sorbents to minimize the problems associated with heavy metal pollution.

OBJECTIVE

In this study, J. regia shells (JRS) and JRS modified with hydrazine hydrate (JRS-HH) were used as sorbents and compared for the preconcentration of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution.

METHODS

For the characterization of sorbents, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX) analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used. For preconcentration, the solid phase extraction (SPE) technique was used. Preconcentration studies were performed by column method and pH, eluent type and concentration, sample volume, flow rate, and interfering ions effect were studied to determine the optimum column parameters.

RESULTS

The limit of detection (LOD) of the sorbents (JRS and JRS-HH) are 0.31 and 0.18 µg/L, respectively. According to the Langmuir isotherm model for both sorbents, for JRS KL = 0.030 L/mg, R2 = 0.992, 0.016 L/mg, and for JRS-HH KL = 0.016 L/mg, R2 = 0.998 and maximum adsorption capacities of the sorbents were found to be as 29.6 and 65.7 mg/g, respectively. The mean recoveries and RSD values at a 95% confidence level (N = 6) for Cd(II) were 100.9% and 3.42, and 100.6% and 3.79, for the JRS and JRS-HH sorbents, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Using this method good results were obtained when compared with those in the literature and the proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of the certificated reference material (NIST 1640).

HIGHLIGHTS

JRS are an effective and inexpensive sorbent for the preconcentration of metal ions when modified. Thus, low-cost agricultural wastes are both recovered and have an economic value.

A new method for the preconcentrations of U(VI) and Th(IV) by magnetized thermophilic bacteria as a novel biosorbent

This paper proposes the use of Anoxybacillus flavithermus SO-15 immobilized on iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) as a novel magnetized biosorbent for the preconcentrations of uranium (U) and thorium (Th). The SPE procedure was based on biosorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) on a column of iron oxide NPs loaded with dead and dried thermophilic bacterial biomass prior to U(VI) and Th(IV) measurements by ICP-OES. The biosorbent characteristicswere explored using FT-IR, SEM, and EDX. Significant operational factors such as solution pH, volume and flow rate of the sample solution, amounts of dead bacteria and iron oxide nanoparticles, matrix interference effect, eluent type, and repeating use of the biosorbent on process yield were studied. The biosorption capacities were found as 62.7 and 56.4 mg g^-1 for U(VI) and Th(IV), respectively. The novel extraction process has been successfullyapplied to the tap, river, and lake water samples for preconcentrations of U(VI) and Th(IV).

Preconcentrations of Ni(II) and Pb(II) from water and food samples by solid-phase extraction using Pleurotus ostreatus immobilized iron oxide nanoparticles

The present study explores the biosorption potential of Pleurotus ostreatus immobilized magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles for solid-phase extractions of Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions from the water and food samples. It was characterized using FTIR, FE-SEM/EDX before and after analyte ions biosorption. Important operational parameters including the effect of initial pH, the flow rate of the sample solution and volume, amount of biomass and support material, interfering ions, best eluent, column reusability were studied. The biosorption capacities of fungus immobilized iron oxide nanoparticles were found as 28.6 and 32.1 mg g^-1 for Ni(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) were achieved as 0.019 and 0.062 ng mL^-1 for Ni(II), 0.041 and 0.14 ng mL^-1 for Pb(II), respectively. The proposed method was validated by applying to certified reference materials and successfully applied for the preconcentrations of Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions from water and food samples by ICP-OES.
