Attapulgite/hydrophilic molecularly imprinted monolithic resin composite for the selective recognition and sensitive determination of plant growth regulators in cucumbers

Regulating the defects of MIL-101(Cr) for the efficient and simultaneous determination of eleven plant growth regulators in fresh fruit juice

This work presents an efficient sorbent for plant growth regulators (PGRs) by regulating the defects of a metal-organic framework MIL-101(Cr). Using the regulated MIL-101(Cr), we developed a simple and effective method for the simultaneous determination of eleven PGRs in fresh fruit juice. The extraction conditions were optimized by an orthogonal array design. Under optimal conditions, the method showed a satisfactory limit of detection (0.1-1.2 ng/g), recovery rates (83.4-110.2 %), and precision (2.9-18.0 % for intra-day and 2.7-10.8 % for inter-day), as well as a greatly suppressed matrix effect. Notably, regulating the defects significantly enhanced the desorption of PGRs on MIL-101(Cr). The sorbent didn't need to be destroyed to release the adsorbed PGRs and could be reused at least 6 times. Furthermore, the defects of MIL-101(Cr) and interactions between the sorbent and PGRs were studied by TGA, ATR-IR, XPS, NH3-TPD and UV-Vis DRS.

The construction of highly selective surface molecularly imprinted polymers based on Cu(II) coordination for the detection of bisphenol A

Herein, we designed and constructed a highly selective MIPs for bisphenol A (BPA) named Cu-MIPs@CS based on Cu(II) coordination. The synthesis of Cu-MIPs@CS employed a dummy template strategy and surface imprinting technology, with chitosan (CS) as the substrate linked to imprinted layers via Cu2+ bridging. 4-vinylpyridine acted as the functional monomer, capable of forming a complex with the template ketoprofen, while ethylene glycol dimethacrylate served as the cross linker. Cu-MIPs@CS exhibited a significantly enhanced imprinting factor of 14.78 for BPA, which was approximately 6.6 times higher than that of imprinted materials without Cu2+ (MIPs@CS). Cu-MIPs@CS exhibited a selective factor of 12.74 towards resorcinol, which possessed identical functional groups but a smaller size than BPA, representing an enhancement of selectivity by 12.25-fold compared to MIPs@CS. More importantly, Cu-MIPs@CS exhibited a superior discrimination ability between BPA and its structural analogue, diphenolic acid, with an excellent selective factor of 2.93, highlighting its significance in distinguish the structural analogue of BPA. In contrast, MIPs@CS lack sufficient selectivity to differentiate between them. Through exploration of adsorption mechanism of Cu-MIPs@CS, it was demonstrated that the incorporation of Cu2+ significantly reduced nonspecific adsorption, but also facilitated the creation of more selective imprinted cavities by introducing metal coordination, thereby notably enhancing the selectivity of Cu-MIPs@CS. Finally, the developed Cu-MIPs@CS were applied as the solid phase extraction adsorbent and combined with HPLC-DAD detection to establish an analytical method towards BPA in drinking water samples. The limit of detection of the method was 0.14 μg L-1 and recoveries ranged from 95.6 % to 101 %. This work provided broad prospects for construction of highly selective MIPs and accurate quantification of trace amounts of BPA.

Highly efficient isolation and purification of high-purity tea saponins from industrial camellia oil production by porous polymeric adsorbents

BACKGROUND

Recovery of high-purity tea saponin (TS), a promising non-ionic surfactant with well-documented properties, is one of the major challenges to broadening its industrial applications. In this study, an innovative and sustainable strategy for the highly-efficient purification of TS was developed by using well-designed highly-porous polymeric adsorbents.

RESULTS

The prepared Pp-A with controllable macropores (~96 nm) and appropriate surface hydrophobic properties was found more favorable for achieving high adsorption efficiency towards TS/TS-micelles. Kinetic results showed the adsorption follows the pseudo-second-order model (R2  = 0.9800), and the Langmuir model is more qualified to explicate the adsorption isotherms with Qe-TS  ~ 675 mg g-1 . Thermodynamic studies revealed the monolayer adsorption of TS was an endothermic process that was conducted spontaneously. Interestingly, ethanol-driven desorption (90% v/v ethanol) of TS was rapidly (< 30 min) complete due to the possible ethanol-mediated disassembling of TS-micelles. A possible mechanism that involves the interactions between the adsorbents and TS/TS-micelles, the formation and disassembling of TS-micelles was proposed to account for the highly efficient purification of TS. Afterwards, Pp-A-based adsorption method was developed to purify TS directly from industrial camellia oil production. Through selective adsorption, pre-washing, and ethanol-driven desorption, the applied Pp-A enabled the direct isolation of high-purity TS (~96%) with a recovery ratio > 90%. Notably, Pp-A exhibited excellent operational stability and is of high potential for long-term industrial application.

CONCLUSION

Results ensured the practical feasibility of the prepared porous adsorbents in purifying TS, and the proposed methodology is a promising industrial-scale purification strategy. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Recent advances in emerging application of functional materials in sample pretreatment methods for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of plant growth regulators: A mini-review

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are a class of small molecular compounds, which can remarkably affect the physiological process of plants. The complex plant matrix along with a wide polarity range and unstable chemical properties of PGRs hinder their trace analysis. In order to obtain a reliable and accurate result, a sample pretreatment process must be carried out, including eliminating the interference of the matrix effect and pre-concentrating the analytes. In recent years, the research of functional materials in sample pretreatment has experienced rapid growth. This review comprehensively overviews recent development in functional materials covering one-dimensional materials, two-dimensional materials, and three-dimensional materials applied in the pretreatment of PGRs before liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. Besides, the advantages and limitations of the above functionalized enrichment materials are discussed, and their future trends have been prospected. The work could be helpful to bring new insights for researchers engaged in functional materials in sample pretreatment of PGRs based on LC-MS.

Synthesis of spindle-like amino-modified Zn/Fe bimetallic metal-organic frameworks as sorbents for dispersive solid-phase extraction and preconcentration of phytohormoes in vegetable samples

Amino-modified Zn/Fe bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (NH₂-Zn/Fe-MIL-88) were synthesized using a one-step solvothermal method with FeCl₃·6H₂O and Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O as metal salts and 2-aminoterephthalic acid as organic ligand. The morphology of NH₂-Zn/Fe-MIL-88 can be regulated from octahedral-like to spindle-like with changing molar ratios of metal salts. Using NH₂-Zn/Fe-MIL-88 as sorbent, a dispersive solid-phase extraction with putting sorbents into sample solution to extract targets was developed to preconcentrate phytohormones in vegetables. To study the extraction efficiency, a series of NH₂-Zn/Fe-MIL-88s with varying molar ratios of metal salts were prepared. The results indicated that NH₂-Zn/Fe-MIL-88(1) presented the highest extraction efficiency (82.6 %-98.1 %) to phytohormones among all prepared NH₂-Zn/Fe-MIL-88(x). The limits of detection were calculated at 0.07-0.15 ng/mL. The adsorption isotherms and kinetic parameters of NH₂-Zn/Fe-MIL-88 for phytohormones were conformed to Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. The NH₂-Zn/Fe-MIL-88 as sorbent combined with HPLC was applied to detect phytohormones in cucumber and tomato samples.

One-Step Co-Electrodeposition of Copper Nanoparticles-Chitosan Film-Carbon Nanoparticles-Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Composite for Electroanalysis of Indole-3-Acetic Acid and Salicylic Acid

A sensitive simultaneous electroanalysis of phytohormones indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and salicylic acid (SA) based on a novel copper nanoparticles-chitosan film-carbon nanoparticles-multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CuNPs-CSF-CNPs-MWCNTs) composite was reported. CNPs were prepared by hydrothermal reaction of chitosan. Then the CuNPs-CSF-CNPs-MWCNTs composite was facilely prepared by one-step co-electrodeposition of CuNPs and CNPs fixed chitosan residues on modified electrode. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) were used to characterize the properties of the composite. Under optimal conditions, the composite modified electrode had a good linear relationship with IAA in the range of 0.01-50 μM, and a good linear relationship with SA in the range of 4-30 μM. The detection limits were 0.0086 μM and 0.7 μM (S/N = 3), respectively. In addition, the sensor could also be used for the simultaneous detection of IAA and SA in real leaf samples with satisfactory recovery.

Recent advances in micro- and nanomaterial-based adsorbents for pipette-tip solid-phase extraction

There are a lot of review papers of sample pretreatment, but the comprehensive review on pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE) is lacking. This review (133 references) is mainly devoted to the development of different types of micro- and nanosorbent-based PT-SPE, including silica materials, carbon materials, organic polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, and metal-organic frameworks. Each section mainly introduces and discusses the preparation methods, advantages and limitations of adsorbents, and their applications to environmental, biological, and food samples. This review also demonstrates the advantages of PT-SPE like convenience, speed, less organic solvent, and low cost. Finally, the future application and development trend of PT-SPE are prospected.

Effectively removing indole-3-butyric acid from aqueous solution with magnetic layered double hydroxide-based adsorbents

The magnetic layered double hydroxide-based materials (MLDHs) with the metal composition of Mg(II)Al(III) were synthesized by different conditions as the adsorbent for removal of a phytohormone, indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). The morphological characteristics of MLDHs were studied through various characterization methods such as XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, BET, Zeta-potential and VSM. The adsorption results showed that the adsorption capacity of MLDH-1 synthesized by co-precipitation method with ammonia as the base source was the best (maximum 522.6 mg/g). The extent of adsorption in the pH range of 3.0-9.0 was observed to be no noticeable change. From the economical point of view, 1.0 g/L MLDH-1 composites were selected as optimum parameter. For a given adsorbent concentration (C_s), its kinetics and adsorption isotherm followed the pseudo-second-order and Liu isotherm model, respectively. The adsorbed sample can be easily magnetically separated and regenerated with NaNO₃. The adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic, including two path stages: surface adsorption of lamellar and interlayer anion exchange. The research makes a contribution to evaluating the ability of MLDHs in IBA removal and helping the public to understand the mechanism of adsorption process.

Eco-friendly ionic liquid imprinted polymer based on a green synthesis strategy for highly selective adsorption tylosin in animal muscle samples

A novel eco-friendly molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was proposed as solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent to selective adsorption tylosin (TYL) in animal muscle samples. The MIP was synthesized in aqueous by using 1,4-butanediyl-3,3-bis-1-vinyl imidazolium chloride and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid as bifunctional monomer. The obtained MIP had excellent selectivity towards TYL in water, and the maximum binding capacity can reach 123.45 mg g^-1. Combined with high-performance liquid chromatography, the presented MIP can be used as SPE sorbent to recognize and detect TYL in the range of 0.008 to 0.6 mg L^-1 (R² = 0.9995). The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 0.003 mg L^-1 and 0.008 mg L^-1, and the intraday and interday precision were 1.05% and 3.36%, respectively. Under the optimal condition, the established MIP-SPE-HPLC method was successfully applied to separate and determine trace TYL in chicken, pork, and beef samples with satisfactory recoveries ranged from 94.0 to 106.3%, and the MIP-SPE cartridge can be cycled at least 20 times. This study implies a promising green MIP-SPE-HPLC method for highly selective adsorption and analysis trace TYL in complex matrices.

Magnetic boron nitride nanosheets as a novel magnetic solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the determination of plant growth regulators in tomatoes

A novel magnetic boron nitride nanosheets (Fe₃O₄@BNNSs) composite-based magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method was employed to analyse six plant growth regulators (PGRs) in tomatoes combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The novel Fe₃O₄@BNNSs composite was prepared via an in situ chemical coprecipitation process and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). Several factors that may affect the extraction efficiencies were optimized. Under the optimal factors, low limits of detection (0.002-0.010 ng g^-1), good linear ranges (0.05-10 ng g^-1) and satisfactory precisions (intra-day: 1.2%-3.9%; inter-day: 2.1%-6.9%) were achieved. The established approach was successfully employed to extract and determine PGRs in tomatoes, and the spiked recoveries were between 85.2 and 109.0%.

Novel synthesized attapulgite nanoparticles-based hydrophobic monolithic column for in-tube solid-phase microextraction of thiosildenafil, pseudovardenafil, and norneosildenafil in functional foods

In this study, a novel method which involved in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) using an attapulgite (ATP) nanoparticles-based hydrophobic monolithic column was successfully developed. It was coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection for the determination of three phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors, including thiosildenafil, pseudovardenafil, and norneosildenafil, in functional foods. The monolithic column was prepared by one-step polymerization, using 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate-modified ATP nanoparticles and 1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide (VBIMBr) as the functional monomers, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) as the cross-linker. The obtained poly(ATP-VBIMBr-EDMA) monolith was characterized by scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption capacity, up to 2.00 μg/cm calculated by the Langmuir isotherm model, was about six times that of the poly(VBIMBr-EDMA) monolith. Crucial factors affecting the extraction efficiency, including sample solvent, elution solvent, flow rates of sampling loading and elution, sample loading volume, and elution volume, were investigated in details. Under the optimal in-tube SPME conditions, the proposed method showed good reproducibility with run-to-run, column-to-column, and batch-to-batch relative standard deviations less than 7.2%, and low limits of detection of 0.5-0.9 ng/mL in real samples. Thiosildenafil was detected in four types of functional foods with the contents of 1.30-4.78 μg/g. This newly proposed in-tube SPME method based on poly(ATP-VBIMBr-EDMA) monolith may provide a simple, efficient, and promising alternative to daily monitoring of PDE-5 inhibitors in functional foods.

Improved Solid-Phase Extraction for Simple, Sensitive, and Efficient Determination of Trace Plant Growth Regulators in Cherry Tomatoes by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

The overuse of plant growth regulators (PGRs) in agricultural products has gradually increased in recent years, resulting in hazardous effects on food safety and human health. For the first time, a sensitive, accurate, and low-cost analytical method involving improved solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography was developed to determine trace PGRs in cherry tomatoes. Thereafter, the extraction mechanism and conditions were elucidated. Under optimized conditions, good linearity (0.04-400 ng g^-1; r ≥ 0.9996) and lower limits of detection (0.005-0.006 ng g^-1) were observed. The recoveries were 81.4-90.1%, with relative standard deviations of ≤6.7% (three levels). Finally, the developed method was successfully used to detect trace PGRs in cherry tomatoes. The results illustrated that this sensitive method shows great potential for application to monitor trace PGRs in agricultural products and, thus, provide technical support for food safety and public health.
