Study of the effect of the addition of plasticizers on the physical properties of biodegradable films based on kefiran for potential application as food packaging

Zinc oxide nanoparticle-reinforced pectin/starch functionalized films: A sustainable solution for biodegradable packaging

Environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable plastic pollutants adversely affects various ecosystems. This study proposes the development of novel functional and biodegradable films based on corn starch (CST) and pectin (PEC) containing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) from the casting method. The films exhibited processability, transparency, low water vapor permeation, and desirable mechanical properties for food packaging and coating applications. The ZnONPs acted as a plasticizer, enhancing the film elongation at the break, increasing the pec25-1 (PEC 25 wt% and ZnONPs 1 wt%) elongation from 79.85 to 162.32 %. The improved film elasticity supported by ZnONPs reduced the material stiffness. However, the films still demonstrated an average tensile strength (0.69 MPa) 17-fold higher than the tensile strength (0.04 MPa) of the non-biodegradable commercial film based on poly(vinyl chloride). Furthermore, the ZnONPs enhanced the UV-blocking capabilities of the films, leading to wettable materials with water contact angles lower than 90°. The films showed high biodegradation rates under natural disposal conditions. The results indicated that the pec25-1/ZnONPs film is a promising eco-friendly coating in food preservation due to its biodegradability, suitable mechanical properties, low water vapor permeability, and UV-blocking properties.

Effect of Nano-Silica and Sorbitol on the Properties of Chitosan-Based Composite Films

Chitosan and its derivatives are widely used in food packaging, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical, textile, paper, agriculture, and environmental industries. However, the flexibility of chitosan films is extremely poor, which limits its relevant applications to a large extent. In this paper, chitosan/sorbitol/nano-silica (CS/sorbitol/SiO2) composite films were prepared by the casting film method using chitosan, sorbitol, Tween-80 and nano-SiO2 as raw materials. The structure of the films was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, electron scanning microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The effects of sorbitol and nano-silica dosage on the mechanical properties, thermal properties and water vapor barrier properties of the composite film were investigated. The results show that with the gradual increase in sorbitol (≤75 wt %), the elongation at the break of chitosan/sorbitol films significantly increased. When the addition of sorbitol was 75 wt %, the elongation at break of the chitosan/sorbitol composite film was 13 times higher than that of the chitosan film. Moreover, nano-SiO2 can further improve the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the chitosan/sorbitol composite films. When the amount of nano-silica was 4.5 wt %, the composite film became more flexible, with a maximum elongation of 90.8% (which is 14 times that of chitosan film), and its toughness increased to 10.52 MJm-3 (which is 6 times that of chitosan film). This study balances the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite films by adding a plasticizer and nano-filler, providing a reference for the preparation of chitosan composites or their blending with other polymers, and has practical guiding significance for the industrial production of biomass plastics.

Green composites based on thermoplastic starch reinforced with micro- and nano-cellulose by melt blending - A review

Starch is a biodegradable biopolymer, a sustainable material that can replace conventional petrochemical-based plastics. However, starch has some limitations, as it must be processed by heating and treated mechanically with a plasticizer to become thermoplastic starch (TPS). Different variables such as mixing speeds, amount, and kind of plasticizers play a vital role in preparing TPS by melting. Despite this, the properties of the TPS are not comparable with those of traditional plastics. To overcome this limitation, microcellulose or nanocellulose is added to TPS by melt mixing, including the extrusion and internal mixing process, which enables large-scale production. This review aims to compile several studies that evaluate the effect of plasticizers, as well as the relevance of incorporating different cellulosic fillers of different dimensions on the properties of TPS obtained by melt mixing. Potential applications of these materials in food packaging, biomedical applications, and other opportunities are also described.

Development and Characterization of Polylactic Acid (PLA)-Based Nanocomposites Used for Food Packaging

The present study is focused on polylactic acid (PLA) blending with bio nanoadditives, such as Tonsil^® (clay) and Aerosil^®, to obtain nanocomposites for a new generation of food packaging. The basic composition was enhanced using Sorbitan oleate (E494) and Proviplast as plasticizers, increasing the composite samples' stability and their mechanical strength. Four mixtures were prepared: S1 with Tonsil^®; S2 with Aerosil^®; S3 with Aerosil^® + Proviplast; and S4 with Sabosorb. They were complexly characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, mechanical tests on different temperatures, and absorption of the saline solution. FTIR shows a proper embedding of the filler component into the polymer matrix and DSC presents a good stability at the living body temperature for all prepared samples. Micro and nanostructural aspects were evidenced by SEM and AFM microscopy, revealing that S3 has the most compact and uniform filler distribution and S4 has the most irregular one. Thus, S3 evidenced the best diametral tensile strength and S4 evidenced the weakest values. All samples present the best bending strength at 18 °C and fair values at 4 °C, with the best values being obtained for the S1 sample and the worst for S4. The lack of mechanical strength of the S4 sample is compensated by its best resistance at liquid penetration, while S1 is more affected by the liquid infiltrations. Finally, results show that PLA composites are suitable for biodegradable and disposable food packages, and the desired properties could be achieved by proper adjustment of the filler proportions.

Biopolymers Produced by Lactic Acid Bacteria: Characterization and Food Application

Plants, animals, bacteria, and food waste are subjects of intensive research, as they are biological sources for the production of biopolymers. The topic links to global challenges related to the extended life cycle of products, and circular economy objectives. A severe and well-known threat to the environment, the non-biodegradability of plastics obliges different stakeholders to find legislative and technical solutions for producing valuable polymers which are biodegradable and also exhibit better characteristics for packaging products. Microorganisms are recognized nowadays as exciting sources for the production of biopolymers with applications in the food industry, package production, and several other fields. Ubiquitous organisms, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are well studied for the production of exopolysaccharides (EPS), but much less as producers of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). Based on their good biodegradability feature, as well as the possibility to be obtained from cheap biomass, PLA and PHAs polymers currently receive increased attention from both research and industry. The present review aims to provide an overview of LAB strains' characteristics that render them candidates for the biosynthesis of EPS, PLA, and PHAs, respectively. Further, the biopolymers' features are described in correlation with their application in different food industry fields and for food packaging. Having in view that the production costs of the polymers constitute their major drawback, alternative solutions of biosynthesis in economic terms are discussed.

Effects of citric acid crosslinking on the structure and properties of ovotransferrin and chitosan composite films

In this study, ovotransferrin/chitosan (OVT/CS) composite films cross-linked by citric acid (CA) were prepared and the effects of CA cross-linking on the structure and physicochemical properties of the composite films were investigated. The cross-linking degree measured by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) method confirmed that CA was cross-linked with the matrix, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that more hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions were formed between CA and the matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and Scanning electron microscope images revealed the compatibility between substances. The synergistic inhibition between the matrix results in a significantly higher antibacterial activity of the composite film than the pure film. Compared with uncross-linked films, the mechanical properties, barrier properties and water resistance of the cross-linked films were significantly improved. When the concentration of CA was 5 wt% (W/W, on a dry basis of the weight of OVT and CS), the most significant improvement in film performance was obtained. The tensile strength of the film increased from 32.05 MPa without cross-linking to 61.99 MPa and the swelling degree decreased from 51.5 % to 24.23 %. The observed phenomena suggest that cross-linking OVT and CS with CA can obtain functional edible films with improved properties.

In Situ Formation of Microfibrillar PBAT in PGA Films: An Effective Way to Robust Barrier and Mechanical Properties for Fully Biodegradable Packaging Films

Poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) is a semicrystalline biodegradable polyester with high gas barrier properties. However, due to its poor processability and low ductility, PGA could hardly find applications in the packaging field. Here, a strategy was adopted for in situ generation of high-aspect-ratio flexible microfibrils with strong interface affinity for the PGA matrix. Because poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) possesses impressive ductility, it was selected as the "fibrillar toughening phase" to enhance the ductility of PGA. Moreover, a chain extender was used to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the two polymers. The extrusion blown film technique was then used to develop fully biodegradable PGA/PBAT films with a superior combination of excellent barrier performance and robust mechanical properties. The PBAT phase can in situ form microfibrils under the influence of extensional flow. Simultaneously, the synergetic function of the extensional flow field could effectively promote the motion of the PGA molecular chain to develop an oriented crystalline microstructure. Because of the aligned oriented lamellar crystal of PGA and oriented PBAT fibril structures serving as robust "barrier walls" 60PGA/ADR blown films demonstrated dramatically improved resistance to oxygen and water vapor, with 59 and 44 times lower oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability, respectively, when compared to the neat PBAT blown film. As a result, PGA/PBAT blown films offer a variety of benefits, including superior ductility, toughness, and a strong gas barrier property. The potential of these films to degrade makes them a viable contender for replacing classical nondegradable packing films.

Bacterial cellulose films production by Kombucha symbiotic community cultured on different herbal infusions

The symbiotic community of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) of Kombucha beverage produces a floating film composed of bacterial cellulose, a distinctive biobased material. In this work, Kombucha fermentation was carried out in six different herbal infusions, where SCOBY was able to synthesise cellulosic films. Infusions of black and green tea, yerba mate, lavender, oregano and fennel added with sucrose (100 g/l) were used as culture media. In all cultures, film production resulted in a maximum after 21 days. Yield conversion, process productivity and antioxidant activity were quantified. Macroscopic and microscopic features of films were determined based on electronic microscopy, calorimetric and mechanical properties and hydration behaviour. Native films from yerba mate had a remarkable antioxidant activity of 93 ± 4% of radical inhibition due to plant polyphenols, which could prevent food oxidation. Results revealed that films retained natural bioactive substances preserving important physicochemical properties, essential for developing active materials.

Cytocompatible drug delivery hydrogels based on carboxymethylagarose/chitosan pH-responsive polyelectrolyte complexes

Several drugs are chemically unstable in the gastric environment and have low bioavailability restricted by intestinal absorption, which motivates the development of alternative routes for drug release, such as transdermal drug carriers for drug delivery to specific areas of the skin. Herein, novel polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) consisting of carboxymethylagarose (CMA) and chitosan (CS) were prepared. pH-responsive CMA/CS hydrogels were obtained by mixing CMA and CS at various weight ratios. Swelling ratio was modulated by varying the CMA and CS weight ratio, and the highest swelling values were achieved for 2:1 wt% hydrogels at 25 °C and pH 6.0. PEC films were characterized by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, and SEM. Results indicated that CMA and CS were successfully crosslinked by ionic complexation. As a model drug, diclofenac sodium (DS) was loaded in CMA/CS PECs. Association efficiency and loading capacity were ca. 69% and 79%, respectively, exhibiting 67% cumulative release after 72 h at 37 °C and pH 6.0 through Fickian diffusion mechanism. Viability assay of immortalized human keratinocyte (HaCat) cells showed ca. 100% survival in the presence of hydrogels and DS. Therefore, this work suggests that CMA/CS PECs can be applied as pH-responsive carriers for dermal drug delivery.

Plastic Food Packaging: Perceptions and Attitudes of Portuguese Consumers about Environmental Impact and Recycling

The use of plastics for packaging has some advantages, since they are flexible and inexpensive. However, most plastics are of single use, which, combined with low recycling or reuse ratios, contributes substantially to environmental pollution. This work is part of a project studying the habits of Portuguese citizens concerning plastic food packaging and focuses on aspects related to sustainability. The survey was carried out via an online questionnaire about sustainability, recycling, and knowledge of the effects of plastic materials or their residues on the environment. The results were obtained based on a statistical analysis of the data. The participants tend to think about the negative impact of plastic packages on the environment; 39% sometimes do not buy plastic; and 30% try to look for alternatives. A substantial fraction, 81%, support the avoidance of plastic utensils and reduction in the use of plastic bags. Most participants have a good knowledge of recycling and strongly agree with the use of recycled materials, and 87% of respondents practice separation of different types of waste for recycling. Changing plastic consumption habits has not been an easy task. Nevertheless, it is expected that society will increasingly move toward sustainable habits, questioning its actions and considering their impact on the environment.

Proof-of-Concept of Detection of Counterfeit Medicine through Polymeric Materials Analysis of Plastics Packaging

The detection of counterfeit pharmaceuticals is always a major challenge, but the early detection of counterfeit medicine in a country will reduce the fatal risk among consumers. Technically, fast laboratory testing is vital to develop an effective surveillance and monitoring system of counterfeit medicines. This study proposed the combination of Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) for the quick detection of counterfeit medicines, through the polymer analysis of blister packaging materials. A sample set containing three sets of original and counterfeit medicine was analyzed using ATR-FTIR and DSC, while the spectra from ATR-FTIR were employed as a fingerprint for the polymer characterization. Intending to analyze the polymeric material of each sample, DSC was set at a heating rate of 10 °C min^-l and within a temperature range of 0- 400 °C, with nitrogen as a purge gas at a flow rate of 20 ml min^-an. The ATR-FTIR spectra revealed the chemical characteristics of the plastic packaging of fake and original medicines. Further analysis of the counterfeit medicine's packaging with DSC exhibited a distinct difference from the original due to the composition of polymers in the packaging material used. Overall, this study confirmed that the rapid analysis of polymeric materials through ATR-FTIR and comparing DSC thermograms of the plastic in their packaging effectively distinguished counterfeit drug products.
