Abstract
Postharvest fibrosis and greening of Toona sinensis buds significantly affect their quality during storage. This study aimed to clarify the effects of low-temperature storage on postharvest red TSB quality harvested in different seasons. Red TSB samples were collected from Guizhou province, China, 21 days after the beginning of spring (Lichun), summer (Lixia), and autumn (Liqiu), and stored at 4 °C in dark conditions. We compared and analyzed the appearance, microstructure, chlorophyll and cellulose content, and expression levels of related genes across different seasons. The results indicated that TSB harvested in spring had a bright, purple-red color, whereas those harvested in summer and autumn were green. All samples lost water and darkened after 1 day of storage. Severe greening occurred in spring-harvested TSB within 3 days, a phenomenon not observed in summer and autumn samples. Microstructural analysis revealed that the cells in the palisade and spongy tissues of spring and autumn TSB settled closely during storage, while summer TSB cells remained loosely aligned. Xylem cells were smallest in spring-harvested TSB and largest in autumn. Prolonged storage led to thickening of the secondary cell walls and pith cell autolysis in the petioles, enlarging the cavity area. Chlorophyll content was higher in leaves than in petioles, while cellulose content was lower in petioles across all seasons. Both chlorophyll and cellulose content increased with storage time. Gene expression analysis showed season-dependent variations and significant increases in the expression of over half of the chlorophyll-related and cellulose-related genes during refrigeration, correlating with the observed changes in chlorophyll and cellulose content. This research provides valuable insights for improving postharvest storage and freshness preservation strategies for red TSB across different seasons.

Abstract
Leaves and stalks, which account for about 45% and 25% of broccoli biomass, respectively, are usually discarded during broccoli production, leading to the waste of green resources. In this study, the phytochemical composition and antioxidant capacity of broccoli florets and their by-products (leaves and stalks) were comprehensively analyzed. The metabolomics identified several unique metabolites (e.g., scopoletin, Harpagoside, and sinalbin) in the leaves and stalks compared to florets. Notably, the leaves were found to be a rich source of flavonoids and coumarins, with superior antioxidant capacity. The random forest model and correlation analysis indicated that flavonoids, coumarin, and indole compounds were the important factors contributing to the antioxidant activity. Moreover, the stalks contained higher levels of carbohydrates and exhibited better antioxidant enzyme activity. Together, these results provided valuable data to support the comprehensive utilization of broccoli waste, the development of new products, and the expansion of the broccoli industry chain.

Abstract
Microplastic (MP), as a new pollutant, not only affects the growth and development of plants but also may affect the secondary metabolites of plants. The anti-tumor role of Pinellia ternata is related to secondary metabolites. The role of brassinolide (BR) in regulating plant resistance is currently one of the research hotspots. The paper mainly explores the regulation of BR on growth and physiology of Pinellia ternata under MP stress. The experimental design includes two levels of MP (0, 1%) and two levels of BR (0, 0.1 mg/L). MP led to a marked reduction in plant height (15.0%), Fv/Fm (3.2%), SOD and APX activity (15.0%, 5.1%), whereas induced an evident raise in the rate of O2·- production (29.6%) and GSH content (4.4%), as well as flavonoids (6.8%), alkaloids (75%), and β-sitosterol (26.5%) contents. Under MP addition, BR supply significantly increased plant height (15.7%), aboveground and underground biomass (16.1%, 10.3%), carotenoid and GSH content (11.8%, 4.2%), Fv/Fm (2.9%), and activities of SOD, GR, and MDHAR (32.2%, 21.08%, 20.9%). These results indicate that MP suppresses the growth of P. ternata, although it promotes secondary metabolism. BR can alleviate the inhibitory effect of MP on growth by improving photosynthesis, redox homeostasis, and the AsA-GSH cycle.

Abstract
Diosgenin (DG) is a bioactive metabolite isolated from Dioscorea species, renowned for its medicinal properties. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of crucial plant steroidal hormones. Cholesterol and campesterol are important intermediates of DG and BR biosynthesis, respectively. DG and BRs are structurally similar components; however, the regulatory network and metabolic interplays have not been fully elucidated. In an effort to decode these complex networks, we conducted a comprehensive study integrating genome-wide methylation, transcriptome and characteristic metabolite data from Dioscorea zingiberensis. Leveraging these data, we were able to construct a comprehensive regulatory network linking DG and BRs. Mass spectrometry results enabled us to clarify the alterations in cholesterol, campesterol, diosgenin, and castasterone (one of the major active BRs). The DG content decreased by 27.72% at 6 h after brassinolide treatment, whereas the content increased by 85.34% at 6 h after brassinazole treatment. Moreover, we pinpointed DG/BR-related genes, such as CASs, CYP90s, and B3-ARFs, implicated in the metabolic pathways of DG and BRs. Moreover, CASs and CYP90s exhibit hypomethylation, which is closely related to their high transcription. These findings provide robust evidence for the homeostasis between DG and BRs. In conclusion, our research revealed the existence of a balance between DG and BRs in D. zingiberensis. Furthermore, our work not only provides new insights into the relationship between the two pathways but also offers a fresh perspective on the functions of secondary metabolites.

Abstract
Sweet corn is perishable and have limited harvest duration and shelf life due to their quality deterioration. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are one of the most predominant factors for maintaining quality of sweet corn during and after harvest. Brassinosteroids (BRs) can enhance the activity of antioxidant enzymes and decrease the ROS level in plants. In this study, we found that a bioactive BR (24-epibrassinolide, EBR) treatment before harvest markedly inhibited change of quality indicators (MDA content, weight loss rate, and soluble sugar content) during and after harvest. Further analysis revealed that EBR promoted the activity and transcriptions of antioxidant enzymes, maintaining lower ROS level in kernels. Meanwhile, exogenous EBR increased the expression level of genes controlling sucrose transport in sweet corn kernels. Bioinformatics and binding analysis identified that BR transcription factor ZmBES1/ZmBZR1-10 might potentially bind to and upregulate transcriptions of antioxidant enzyme genes including SOD and POD genes, and sucrose transport-related genes including SUT and SWEET genes. These results indicated that exogenous application of EBR ameliorates quality during and after harvest by improving the antioxidant capacity and photosynthetic assimilates accumulation rate of sweet corn, thus prolonging harvest duration and shelf life in sweet corn.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) can pose high risk to living organisms due to their very small sizes. This study selected polyvinyl chloride MPs (PVC-MPs) which experienced up to 1000 h UV light radiation to investigate the influence of PVC-MPs on Brassica rapa growth. The outcomes showed the presence of PVC-MPs inhibited the plants' growth. The stem length, root length, fresh weight and dry weight of plants exposed to PVC-MPs after 30 days reduced by 45.9%, 35.2%, 26.1% and 5.2%, respectively. The chlorophyll, soluble sugar, malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase (CAT) concentrations for plants exposed to PVC-MPs after 30 days increased by 25.9%, 135.7%, 88.7% and 47.1% respectively. It was also observed that PVC-MPs blocked the plants' leaf stomata and even entered plants' bodies. This might lead to PVC-MPs movement within the plants and influence plants' growth. The transcriptomic analysis results indicated that exposure to PVC-MPs up-regulated metabolic pathway of plant hormone signal transduction of the plants and down-regulated pathway network of ribosome. However, the research outcomes also showed that the PVC-MPs' locations in soil (located at the upper layers or at lower layers) and the UV light radiation time did not exert significantly different influences on inhibiting plants' growth. This can be attributed to PVC-MPs' small sizes and not much decomposition under light radiation. These imply that longer light radiation time and different particle sizes should be included into future research in order to further explore photodegraded MPs' toxicity effects on plants.

Abstract
The postharvest quality of blueberry fruit is largely limited by deterioration. l-arginine (Arg) is a functional nontoxic amino acid with high biological activities. This study investigated the positive effects and the underlying mechanism of Arg treatment on the quality of postharvest blueberries. Arg effectively mitigated fruit decay and improved the quality of blueberries, including weight loss, firmness, and soluble solid content. Mechanistically, Arg-mediated activation of the anti-oxidative defense system reduced reactive oxygen species-mediated oxidative damage. Moreover, Arg treatment decreased the activities and gene expression of phospholipase D, lipoxygenase, and lipase-inhibiting membrane lipid peroxidation during the prolonged storage of blueberries. Meanwhile, Arg treatment increased nitric oxide (NO) content and NO synthase activity. Furthermore, correlation and principal component analyses revealed the enhancement of Arg treatment on antioxidant capacity. This study suggests that Arg treatment can maintain the postharvest quality of blueberries by improving antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Chlorophylls play a crucial role in photosynthesis and are abundantly found in green fruits and vegetables that form an integral part of our diet. Although limited, existing studies suggest that these photosynthetic pigments and their derivatives possess therapeutic properties. These bioactive molecules exhibit a wide range of beneficial effects, including antioxidant, antimutagenic, antigenotoxic, anti-cancer, and anti-obesogenic activities. However, it is unfortunate that leafy materials and fruit peels often go to waste in the food supply chain, contributing to the prevailing issue of food waste in modern societies. Nevertheless, these overlooked materials contain valuable bioactive compounds, including chlorophylls, which offer significant health benefits. Consequently, exploring the potential of these discarded resources, such as utilizing them as functional food ingredients, aligns with the principles of a circular economy and presents exciting opportunities for exploitation.

Abstract
Broccoli sprouts have a strong ability to accumulate isothiocyanate and selenium. In this study, the isothiocyanate content increased significantly as a result of ZnSO4 stress. Particularly, based on the isothiocyanate content is not affected, the combined ZnSO4 and Na2SeO3 treatment alleviated the inhibition of ZnSO4 and induced selenium content. Gene transcription and protein expression analyses revealed the changes in isothiocyanate and selenium metabolite levels in broccoli sprouts. ZnSO4 combined with Na2SeO3 was proven to activate a series of isothiocyanate metabolite genes (UGT74B1, OX1, and ST5b) and selenium metabolite genes (BoSultr1;1, BoCOQ5-2, and BoHMT1). The relative abundance of the total 317 and 203 proteins, respectively, in 4-day-old broccoli sprouts varied, and the metabolic and biosynthetic pathways for secondary metabolites were significantly enriched in ZnSO4/control and ZnSO4 combined Na2SeO3/ZnSO4 comparisons. The findings demonstrated how ZnSO4 combined with Na2SeO3 treatment reduced stress inhibition and the accumulation of encouraged selenium and isothiocyanates during the growth of broccoli sprouts.

Abstract
Volatile organic compounds produced by bacteria (BVOCs) have been proven to effect the postharvest metabolism of fruits and vegetables. The quality, color and antioxidant capacity of membrane lipids of broccoli in storage were effectively maintained by fumigation with BVOCs produced by Lysinibacillus fusiformis combined with white light emitting diode (LED) technology. An analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome of broccoli treated with the combined LED-BVOCs technology resulted in the identification of 49 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 13 differentially abundant metabolites (DAMs) involved in photosynthesis (32/0 DEGs upregulated/downregulated; 0/0 DAMs with increased/decreased abundance), chlorophyll (7/0; 1/2), carotenoid (5/0; 1/4) and flavonoid (3/3; 3/2) metabolism. The maintenance of green color in harvested broccoli treated by LED-BVOCs was associated with DEGs and DAMs that inhibited chlorophyll degradation and carotenoid accumulation. Our study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the delayed senescence of broccoli during storage using BVOCs-LED technology.

Abstract
Internal blue discoloration in cherry radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. radculus pers) roots can appear after harvest. The antioxidant system and content of reactive oxygen species (ROS) will affect the blue discoloration. Currently, the reason for the blue discoloration is not yet clear. In order to reveal the mechanism of the blue discoloration of cherry radish, we selected the blue discolored cherry radish as the research object and the white cherry radish as the control. The difference in the antioxidant system between them were compared, including related enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidants in this system. Meanwhile, the changes in the contents of 4-hydroxyglucobrassicin as a precursor substance and ROS were compared. The results showed that the activities of typical antioxidant enzymes decreased and the cycle of Glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and Ascorbic acid-Glutathione (ASA-GSH) was disturbed, leading to the reduction of antioxidant effect and the failure of timely and effective decomposition of superoxide anions (O2•-) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In addition, the elevated level of O2•- and H2O2 led to the disorder of the antioxidant system, while the 4-hydroxybrassinoside was oxidized under the catalysis of peroxidase (POD) and eventually led to the internal blue discoloration in cherry radish. These results can provide a theoretical basis for solving the blue discoloration problem.

Abstract
Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. Italic) is rich in nutrition. However, it is susceptible to yellowing after harvest, leading to nutritional and economic losses. In this study, diacetyl, a natural food additive compound, was selected to inhibit the yellowing of broccoli florets and maintain the nutrient quality during storage time. It was found that 20 μl L-1 diacetyl treatment for 12 h could significantly delay the yellowing and decrease the weight loss and lignin content of broccoli florets. Meanwhile, diacetyl could maintain higher contents of chlorophyll, vitamin C and flavonoids and suppress the transcript levels of chlorophyll degradation-related genes in broccoli florets. Moreover, accumulations of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were inhibited by diacetyl treatment. Under diacetyl treatment, the generation of ethylene was prevented by inhibiting the activities and related-gene expressions of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) synthase and ACC oxidase. Based on our findings, exogenous diacetyl could be employed as a novel bioactive molecule for retarding the yellowing and maintaining the quality of postharvest broccoli.

Abstract
Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch) are sensitive to salt stress, and breeding salt-tolerant strawberry cultivars is the primary method to develop resistance to increased soil salinization. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms mediating the response of strawberry to salinity stress remain largely unknown. This study evaluated the salinity tolerance of 24 strawberry varieties, and transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis were performed of 'Sweet Charlie' (salt-tolerant) and 'Benihoppe' (salt-sensitive) to explore salt tolerance mechanisms in strawberry. Compared with the control, we identified 3412 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 209 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) in 'Benihoppe,' and 5102 DEGs and 230 DAMs in 'Sweet Charlie.' DEGs Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analyses indicated that the DEGs in 'Benihoppe' were enriched for ion homeostasis related terms, while in 'Sweet Charlie,' terms related to cell wall remodeling were over-represented. DEGs related to ion homeostasis and cell wall remodeling exhibited differential expression patterns in 'Benihoppe' and 'Sweet Charlie.' In 'Benihoppe,' 21 ion homeostasis-related DEGs and 32 cell wall remodeling-related DEGs were upregulated, while 23 ion homeostasis-related DEGs and 138 cell wall remodeling-related DEGs were downregulated. In 'Sweet Charlie,' 72 ion homeostasis-related DEGs and 275 cell wall remodeling-related DEGs were upregulated, while 11 ion homeostasis-related DEGs and 20 cell wall remodeling-related DEGs were downregulated. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses showed only four KEGG enriched pathways were shared between 'Benihoppe' and 'Sweet Charlie,' including flavonoid biosynthesis, phenylalanine metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and ubiquinone, and other terpenoid-quinone biosynthesis. Integrating the results of transcriptomic and metabolomics analyses showed that adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and flavonoid pathway genes might play important roles in the salt stress response in strawberry, and DAMs and DEGs related to ABC transporter and flavonoid pathways were differentially expressed or accumulated. The results of this study reveal that cell wall remodeling and ABC transporters contribute to the response to salt stress in strawberry, and that related genes showed differential expression patterns in varieties with different salt tolerances. These findings provide new insights into the underlying molecular mechanism of strawberry response to salt stress and suggest potential targets for the breeding of salt-tolerant strawberry varieties.
