Abstract
Seaweed consumption has gained popularity due to its nutritional value and potential health benefits. However, concerns regarding the bioaccumulation of several trace elements highlight the need for comprehensive studies on exposure associated with seaweed consumption. To address this gap in knowledge, we carried out a feeding intervention study of three common edible seaweeds (Nori, Kombu, and Wakame) in 11 volunteers, aiming to elucidate the extent of both beneficial and harmful trace element exposure through seaweed consumption in humans. Concentrations of total arsenic, cobalt, copper, cadmium, iodine, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc were measured in urine samples before and following seaweed consumption. Elements concentrations were also measured in the seaweeds provided for the study. Descriptive analysis for each element were conducted and we used quantile g-computation approach to assess the association between the 8-element mixture and seaweed consumption. Differences in urine element concentrations and seaweed consumption were analyzed using generalized estimating equations (GEE). Urinary concentrations of iodine and total arsenic increased after seaweed consumption. When we analyze the 8-element mixture, the largest weight was observed for iodine after Kombu consumption while for total arsenic was observed after Wakame consumption. Similar results were observed when we compared the mean differences between the elements before and after seaweed consumption through the GEE. Seaweed consumption relates with increased urinary iodine and total arsenic concentrations, particularly after Kombu and Wakame consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary kelp possesses a variety of useful biological qualities but does not have a toxic effect on the host. In this study, we examine how kelp dietary supplementation enhances the serum biochemistry, intestinal immunity, and metabolism of hybrid snakehead. A total of 810 juvenile hybrid snakeheads (Channa maculata ♀ × Channa argus ♂), with an initial average weight of 11.4 ± 0.15 g, were allocated randomly to three treatment groups (three replicates per group). The fish were fed for 60 days with isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets. The groups were the control group (C) (20% high-gluten flour), the medium replacement group (MR) (10% high-gluten flour and 10% kelp meal), and the full replacement group (FR) (0% high-gluten flour and 15% kelp meal). RESULTS The results showed that dietary kelp increased the activity of serum antioxidant enzymes significantly and decreased the content of serum malondialdehyde (MDA) in hybrid snakeheads, with significant changes in the FR group (P < 0.05). The intestinal morphology results showed that dietary kelp helped to increase the specific surface area of intestinal villi, which was beneficial for intestinal digestion and absorption. According to transcriptome and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis, dietary kelp can improve the expression of intestinal immunity and metabolism-related pathways. Among them, immune-related genes MHC1 and HSPA1 were significantly up-regulated, and IGH, MHC2, and IL-8 were significantly down-regulated (P < 0.05). Lipid metabolism-related genes DGAT2, FABP2, RXRα, and PLPP1 were all significantly up-regulated (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Dietary kelp can effectively improve the antioxidant function of hybrid snakeheads, improve intestinal morphology, reduce intestinal inflammation, and promote intestinal lipid synthesis and transportation, thereby improving intestinal immunity and metabolic functions. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Ligustrum robustum is one of the traditional teas in China with a long history of drinking and medicinal use. Through Response surface optimization, the yield of polysaccharides extracted by ultrasonic-assisted complex enzyme (UAE-EN) method was increased to 14.10 ± 0.56 %. Neutral homogeneous polysaccharide (LRNP) and acidic homogeneous polysaccharide (LRAP-1, LRAP-2, LRAP-3) from L. robustum were purified. The molecular weights of them were 5894, 4256, 4621 and 3915 Da. LRNP was composed of glucose (Glc), galactose (Gal), arabinose (Ara) with molar percentage of 24.97, 42.38 and 30.80. Structure analysis revealed that the backbone of LRNP consisted of 1,5-linked α-Araf, 1,4-linked β-Galp, 1,6-linked β-Galp, and 1,4-linked β-Glcp with the branches of 1,2-linked α-Araf, 1,3-linked α-Araf, 1,3-linked β-Glcp and 1,6-linked β-Galp residues, some terminal residues of α-Araf, β-Glcp and α-Galp were also included. In vitro experiments showed that the four polysaccharides possessed excellent antioxidant, antitumor and hypoglycemic activities. LRNP possessed the protective effect against oxidative stress. The studies provide a basis for further exploitation of L. robustum.

Abstract
Fucoidan from Laminaria japonica became sterilized with an autoclave and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Potential prebiotic and antibacterial activities of sterilized fucoidans (SF) were the subject of investigation. Molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, FTIR, and NMR spectra of SF underwent evaluations to elucidate the relationship between the structure and activities of SF. The growth of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and L. acidophilus with autoclave sterilized fucoidan (ASF) and the growth of L. plantarum, L. gasseri, L. paracasei, and L. reuteri with UV sterilized fucoidan (USF) increased significantly. Also, fucoidan was vastly more effective than fructooligosaccharides in improving the growth of L. gasseri, L. reuteri, and L. paracasei. The growth of Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus decreased at each SF concentration. ASF was more effective against E. coli, B. cereus, and Staphylococcus aureus than the USF efficiency. However, USF exhibited more inhibitory effects on the growth of Enterobacteriaceae compared to the ASF efficiency. When comparing the ASF and USF, autoclave caused a considerable decrease in molecular weight and uronic acid content, increased fucose and galactose, and made no significant changes in NMR spectra. Fucoidan effectively promoted probiotic bacterial growth and reduced pathogenic outbreaks in the medium. Therefore, it can occur as a new algal prebiotic and antibacterial agent.

Abstract
Three Laminaria japonica polysaccharides (LJPs) extracted via water extraction (LJP-W), acid extraction (LJP-A), and enzymatic extraction (LJP-E) were used as raw materials to be cross-linked with chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol to prepare hydrogels. Compared with conventional hydrogel systems, all three types of LJP-based polysaccharide hydrogels exhibited better swelling properties (14 times their original weight) and the absorption ability of simulated body fluid (first 2 h: 6-10%). They also demonstrated better rigidity and mechanical strength. Young's modulus of LJP-E was 4 times that of the blank. In terms of hemostatic properties, all three polysaccharide hydrogels did not show significant cytotoxic and hemolytic properties. The enzyme- and acid-extracted hydrogels (LJP-Gel-A and LJP-Gel-E) demonstrated better whole-blood coagulant ability compared with the water-extracted hydrogel (LJP-Gel-W), as evidenced by the whole blood coagulation index being half that of LJP-Gel-W. Additionally, the lactate dehydrogenase viabilities of LJP-Gel-A and LJP-Gel-E were significantly higher, at about four and three times those of water extraction, respectively. The above results suggested that LJP-Gel-A and LJP-Gel-E exhibited better blood coagulation capabilities than LJP-Gel-W, due to their enhanced platelet enrichment and adhesion properties. Consequently, these hydrogels are more conducive to promoting coagulation and have good potential for wound hemostasis.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disorder with intricate pathogenic mechanisms. Despite the availability of various oral medications for controlling the condition, reports of poor glycemic control in type 2 diabetes persist, possibly involving unknown pathogenic mechanisms. In recent years, the gut microbiota have emerged as a highly promising target for T2DM treatment, with the metabolites produced by gut microbiota serving as crucial intermediaries connecting gut microbiota and strongly related to T2DM. Increasingly, traditional Chinese medicine is being considered to target the gut microbiota for T2DM treatment, and many of them are edible. In studies conducted on animal models, edible traditional Chinese medicine have been shown to primarily alter three significant gut microbiotal metabolites: short-chain fatty acids, bile acids, and branched-chain amino acids. These metabolites play crucial roles in alleviating T2DM by improving glucose metabolism and reducing inflammation. This review primarily summarizes twelve edible traditional Chinese medicines that improve T2DM by modulating the aforementioned three gut microbiotal metabolites, along with potential underlying molecular mechanisms, and also incorporation of edible traditional Chinese medicines into the diets of T2DM patients and combined use with probiotics for treating T2DM are discussed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Laminaria japonica polysaccharide (LJP) and coumaric acid (CA) on pasting, rheological, retrogradation and structural properties of corn starch (CS). Rapid viscosity analysis (RVA) revealed that LJP significantly increased the peak viscosity, trough viscosity, final viscosity, and setback viscosity of CS gel (p < 0.05) in a concentration-dependent manner. The addition of LJP and CA simultaneously caused the pasting of CS to need a greater temperature (from 75.53 °C to 78.75 °C), suggesting that LJP and CA made CS pasting more difficult. Dynamic viscoelasticity measurements found that all gels exhibited typical characteristics of weak gel. When compared to CS gel, 4 % LJP increased the viscosity and fluidity of gel and the simultaneous addition of LJP and CA reduced the elasticity. The steady shear results showed that the all gels were pseudoplastic fluids with shear-thinning behavior. In the meanwhile, the addition of LJP and CA enhanced the pseudoplasticity of CS-LJP-CA gel and improved its shear thinning. Furthermore, thermodynamic results showed that 8 % LJP promoted the retrogradation of CS gel and 2.0 % CA delayed the retrogradation of CS gel. Notably, on the 7th day of retrogradation, 2.0 % CA significantly decreased the retrogradation rate of CS-LJP by 19.31 % as compared to CS + 8 % LJP. Microstructure observation revealed that LJP made the honeycomb network structure of CS gel partially collapsed, and the surface of CS-LJP gel developed venation. Nevertheless, the structure of CS-LJP gel was clearly enhanced by adding CA. FT-IR spectra demonstrated that the addition of LJP or CA to CS did not result in the formation of a new distinctive peak in the system, suggesting the absence of a new group. Moreover, LF-NMR findings showed that LJP and CA strengthened the gel structure of CS and enhanced its capacity to retain water. This study not only provided a new insight into using LJP and CA to regulate the gel properties of CS, but also provided scientific strategy for developing starchy foods.

Abstract
Ensuring the safety of crop production presents a significant challenge to humanity. Pesticides and fertilizers are commonly used to eliminate external interference and provide nutrients, enabling crops to sustain growth and defense. However, the addition of chemical substances does not meet the environmental standards required for agricultural production. Recently, natural sources such as biostimulants have been found to help plants with growth and defense. The development of biostimulants provides new solutions for agricultural product safety and has become a widely utilized tool in agricultural. The review summarizes the classification of biostimulants, including humic-based biostimulant, protein-based biostimulant, oligosaccharide-based biostimulant, metabolites-based biostimulants, inorganic substance, and microbial inoculant. This review attempts to summarize suitable alternative technology that can address the problems and analyze the current state of biostimulants, summarizes the research mechanisms, and anticipates future technological developments and market trends, which provides comprehensive information for researchers to develop biostimulants.

Abstract
Traditional Chinese medicines are tremendous sources of polysaccharides, which are of great interest in the human welfare system as natural medicines, food, and cosmetics. This review aims to highlight the recent trends in extraction (conventional and non-conventional), purification and analytic techniques of traditional Chinese medicine polysaccharides (TCMPs), and the chemical structure, biological activities (anti-tumor, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, intestinal flora regulation, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, and other activities), and the underlying mechanisms of polysaccharides extracted from 76 diverse traditional Chinese medicines were compared and discussed. With this wide coverage, a total of 164 scientific articles were searched from the database including Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and China Knowledge Network. This comprehensive survey from previous reports indicates that TCMPs are non-toxic, highly biocompatible, and good biodegradability. Besides, this review highlights that TCMPs may be excellent functional factors and effective therapeutic drugs. Finally, the current problems and future research advances of TCMPs are also introduced. New valuable insights for the future researches regarding TCMPs are also proposed in the fields of therapeutic agents and functional foods.

Abstract
Despite significant progress in diagnosis and treatment, asthma remains a serious public health challenge. The conventional therapeutic drugs for asthma often have side effects and unsatisfactory clinical efficacy. Therefore, it is very urgent to develop new drugs to overcome the shortcomings of conventional drugs. Natural polysaccharides provide enormous resources for the development of drugs or health products, and they are receiving a lot of attention from scientists around the world due to their safety, effective anti-inflammatory and immune regulatory properties. Increasing evidence shows that polysaccharides have favorable biological activities in the respiratory disease, including asthma. This review provides an overview of primary literature on the recent advances of polysaccharides from natural resources in the treatment of asthma. The mechanisms and practicability of polysaccharides, including polysaccharides from plants, fungus, bacteria, alga, animals and others are reviewed. Finally, the further research of polysaccharides in the treatment of asthma are discussed. This review can provide a basis for further study of polysaccharides in the treatment of asthma and provides guidance for the development and clinical application of novel asthma treatment drugs.

Abstract
The genus Schisandra, a member of the Magnoliaceae family, is a well-known tonic traditional Chinese medicine with a long history of traditional medicinal and functional food used in China. Polysaccharides are one of its main active constituents, which have a wide range of bioactivities, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, neuroprotection, anti-diabetes, hepatoprotection, immunomodulation, and anti-fatigue. In this paper, we review the extraction, isolation, purification, structural characterization, bioactivities, as well as structure-activity relationship of polysaccharides from the genus Schisandra. In conclusion, we hope that this review could provide reference for the subsequent research on structural, bioactivities, development and application of the genus Schisandra polysaccharides.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of high-pressure processing (HPP) on the physicochemical and adsorption properties and structural characteristics of kelp, kelp slice (KS) and kelp powder (KP) were treated under different pressures (300, 450, and 600 MPa) for 5 and 10 min. Compared to untreated KP, HPP-treated KP yielded a 1.31-fold increase in water holding capacity (600 MPa/5 min), a 0.12-fold increase in swelling capacity (450 MPa/10 min), a 1.33-fold increase in oil holding capacity (600 MPa/10 min), a 10-fold increase in glucose adsorption capacity (450 MPa/10 min), and a 0.22-fold increase in cholesterol adsorption capacity (163.1 mg/g DW at 450 MPa/10 min), and exhibited good Cd (Ⅱ) adsorption capacity when its concentration was 10 mmol/L in the small intestine. The physicochemical properties of HPP-treated KS were not improved due to its low specific surface area. In addition, HPP treatment efficiently reduced the particle size of KP and increased its total and soluble dietary fiber content by 17% and 63% at 600 MPa/10 min, respectively. Scanning electron microscope micrographs demonstrated that the surface of HPP-treated KP was rough and porous, and the specific surface area increased with increasing pressure and processing time. To conclude, the results obtained in the present study suggest that HPP is a promising processing method for improving the functionality and structural characteristics of KP and provide a theoretical basis for the utilization of HPP-treated KP as a fiber-rich ingredient in the functional food industry.

Abstract
Fucoidan is a kind of natural water-soluble fucose-rich sulfated polysaccharide with promising applications in the food and pharmaceutical industry. However, the traditional methods for fucoidan recovery from aqueous solution are expensive, time-consuming, and environmentally unfriendly. In this work, polyethyleneimine functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (PEI-MNPs) with well-defined core-shell structures were prepared by a Layer-by-Layer (LbL) approach using sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) as a cross-linker. The as-prepared PEI-MNPs showed improved adsorption capability towards fucoidan at pH 4-8 due to the high density of cationic groups on the surfaces and the absence of internal pores. It was found that the adsorption process of fucoidan onto PEI-MNPs can reach to equilibrium in 50 min at room temperature. The maximum qe derived from the Langmuir isotherm at room temperature was 169.1 mg per g at a pH of 7. A selective fucoidan capture over a model protein BSA can be realized by adjusting pH (6-8) and salt concentration (0.5-2.5 M). The PEI-MNPs loading with fucoidan can be isolated from the final products by a neodymium magnet and regenerated by 4 M NaCl solution as stripping reagent. Therefore, this novel kind of PEI-MNP could be a promising candidate for highly efficient and recyclable recovery of fucoidan from an aqueous solution.

Abstract
Polysaccharides, being a natural, active, and biodegradable polymer, have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional properties. These properties make them ideal for creating multifunctional hydrogels that can be used as wound dressings for skin injuries. Polysaccharide hydrogel has the ability to both simulate the natural extracellular matrix, promote cell proliferation, and provide a suitable environment for wound healing while protecting it from bacterial invasion. Polysaccharide hydrogels offer a promising solution for repairing damaged skin. This review provides an overview of the mechanisms involved in skin damage repair and emphasizes the potential of polysaccharide hydrogels in this regard. For different skin injuries, polysaccharide hydrogels can play a role in promoting wound healing. However, we still need to conduct more research on polysaccharide hydrogels to provide more possibilities for skin damage repair.

Abstract
Marine algae are sources of bioactive components with defensive properties of great value against microbial infections. This study investigated the bioactivity of extracts from brown algae Fucus vesiculosus against rotavirus, the worldwide leading cause of acute gastroenteritis in infants and young children. Moreover, one of the extracts was tested against four foodborne bacteria: Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Listeria monocytogenes, and the non-pathogenic: E. coli K12. In vitro tests using MA104 cells revealed that both whole algae extracts and crude fucoidan precipitates neutralized rotavirus in a dose-responsive manner. The maximum neutralization activity was observed when the rotavirus was incubated with 100 μg mL-1 of the hydrochloric acid-obtained crude fucoidan (91.8%), although crude fucoidan extracted using citric acid also demonstrated high values (89.5%) at the same concentration. Furthermore, molecular weight fractionation of extracts decreased their antirotaviral activity and high molecular weight fractions exhibited higher activity compared to those of lower molecular weight. A seaweed extract with high antirotaviral activity was also found to inhibit the growth of C. jejuni, S. Typhimurium, and L. monocytogenes at a concentration of 0.2 mg mL-1. Overall, this study expands the current knowledge regarding the antimicrobial mechanisms of action of extracts from F. vesiculosus.

Abstract
Polyacrylamide (PAM) is the most commonly used coagulant aid in coagulation-ultrafiltration (C-UF) systems; however, its hydrolyzed monomer is harmful to the human nervous system. In this study, laminarin (LA), was extracted from Laminaria japonica and used as a novel coagulant aid to improve coagulation efficiency and reduce membrane fouling during the C-UF process. Optimal LA usage conditions were systematically examined and compared with those of PAM to evaluate their potential for industrial applications. The results revealed that coagulation efficiency could be enhanced by 15-35% with moderate LA addition, which exhibited comparable aid effects to PAM. LA exhibited the highest coagulation aid effect at pH 8-9, and under this condition, turbidity and natural organic matter (NOM) removal achieved 82% and 54%, respectively. Compared with a one-time LA dosing strategy, the pollutant removal capacity of batch dosing was superior. Even in lower water temperatures (5-15 °C), coagulation efficiency was still satisfied, which exhibited a good practical application perspective. The coagulation aid role of LA should be attributed to its long-chain molecular structure, which enhances the bridging role between micro flocs and assists floc growth, thus facilitating the formation of large flocs. In addition, LA adsorption on floc surface was conducive to the direct electrostatic repulsion effect of electronegative membrane, which resulted in a more porous cake layer and higher membrane flux. Therefore, LA exhibits excellent application potential for eliminating NOM while simultaneously reducing membrane fouling through the C-UF process.

Abstract
Rice bran is a "treasure house of natural nutrition". Even so, utilization of rice bran is often ignored, and this has resulted in the wastage of nutrients. Polysaccharides are one of the active substances in rice bran that have gained widespread attention for their antioxidant, antitumor, immune-enhancing, antibacterial, and hypoglycemic properties. This review summarizes the extraction methods, structural characterization, bioactivity, and application of rice bran polysaccharides that have been developed and studied in recent years, laying a foundation for its development into foods and medicines. In addition, we also discuss the prospects for future research on rice bran polysaccharides.

Abstract
Polysaccharide from Laminaria japonica (LJPS) exhibits multiple biological functions. However, we found that crude LJPS doesn't show good anti-lung cancer activity in this study. We therefore used tangential flow filtration (TFF) system to optimize the anticancer activity of LJPS. We divided the crude LJPS into two fractions by TFF system with a 10 kDa filter and denoted as retentate (10K-R) and filtration (10K-F). The chemical assay revealed that the main molecular mass of 10K-R and 10K-F is about 985 and 3 kDa, respectively. The main components of 10K-R include fucose (19.3 %), and glucose (59.5 %); while glucose (88.6 %) is a major component of 10K-F. Biological functions showed that 10K-R but not 10K-F inhibited the viability and mobility of cancer cells. 10K-R downregulated expressions of transforming growth factor β receptor and Slug, and inhibited intracellular signaling molecules, including FAK, AKT, ERK1/2, and Smad2. This study is the first concept to purify the polysaccharide by TFF system and showed the potential mechanism of 10K-R inhibited cancer cells.

Abstract
Due to the large molecular weight and complex structure of Laminaria japonica polysaccharides (LJP), which limit their absorption and utilization by the body, methods to effectively degrade polysaccharides had received more and more attention. In the present research, hot water extraction coupled with three-phase partitioning (TPP) was developed to extract and isolate LJP. Ultrasonic L. japonica polysaccharides (ULJP) were obtained by ultrasonic degradation. In addition, their physicochemical characteristics and in vitro biological activities were investigated. Results indicated that ULJP had lower weight-average molecular weight (153 kDa) and looser surface morphology than the LJP. The primary structures of LJP and ULJP were basically unchanged, both contained α-hexo-pyranoses and were mainly connected by 1,4-glycosidic bonds. Compared with LJP, ULJP had stronger antioxidant activity, α-amylase inhibitory effect and anti-inflammatory effect on RAW264.7 macrophages. The scavenging rate of DPPH free radicals by ULJP is 35.85%. Therefore, ultrasonic degradation could effectively degrade LJP and significantly improve the biological activity of LJP, which provided a theoretical basis for the in-depth utilization and research and development of L. japonica in the fields of medicine and food.

Abstract
In this study, Laminaria japonica polysaccharide (LJP) was measured in vitro against three antioxidant indicators: DPPH, ABTS, and hydroxyl. In vivo, LJP investigated thermal tolerance, H2O2-induced oxidative stress tolerance, and lipofuscin in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Following that, after LJP treatment, the effects and underlying mechanisms were investigated at the mRNA and metabolite levels. We discovered the free radical scavenging activity of LJP. The thermal tolerance of C. elegans improved significantly, lowering levels of malondialdehyde, lipofuscin, and reactive oxygen species. Upregulation of Glp-1, Daf-16, Skn-1, and Sod-3 expression and downregulation of Age-1 and Daf-2 expression increased the ability to resist oxidative stress. Metabolomic analysis revealed that LJP promoted alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, the TCA cycle, butanoate metabolism, and the FOXO signaling pathway expression, resulting in significant changes in (R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid, palmitic acid, L-glutamic acid, L-malic acid, and oleic acid. The present study shows that LJP, as a functional food, has the potential to boost antioxidant capacity and delay aging.

Abstract
AbstractMarine bacterium Microbulbifer sp. ALW1 was revealed to be able to effectively degrade Laminaria japonica thallus fragments into fine particles. Polysaccharide substrate specificity analysis indicated that ALW1 could produce extracellular alginate lyase, laminarinase, fucoidanase and cellulase. Based on alignment of the 16 S rRNA sequence with other reference relatives, ALW1 showed the closest relationship with Microbulbifer aggregans CCB-MM1T. The cell morphology and some basic physiological and biochemical parameters of ALW1 cells were characterised. ALW1 is a Gram-negative, rod- or oval-shaped, non-spore-forming and non-motile bacterium. The DNA–DNA relatedness values of ALW1 with type strains of M. gwangyangensis (JCM 17,800), M. aggregans (JCM 31,875), M. maritimus (JCM 12,187), M. okinawensis (JCM 16,147) and M. rhizosphaerae (DSM 28,920) were 28.9%, 43.3%, 41.2%, 35.4% and 45.6%, respectively. The major cell wall sugars of ALW1 were determined to be ribose and galactose, which differed from other closely related species. These characteristics indicated that ALW1 could be assigned to a separate species of the genus Microbulbifer. The complete genome of ALW1 contained one circular chromosome with 4,682,287 bp and a GC content of 56.86%. The putative encoded proteins were categorised based on their functional annotations. Phenotypic, physiological, biochemical and genomic characterisation will provide insights into the many potential industrial applications of Microbulbifer sp. ALW1.Key points.

Abstract
The flowers, leaves, seed cakes and fruit shells of Camellia oleifera are rich in bioactive polysaccharides, which can be used as additives in food and other industries. In this study, a Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the extraction conditions of polysaccharides from C. oleifera flowers (P-CF), leaves (P-CL), seed cakes (P-CC), and fruit shells (P-CS). Under the optimized extraction conditions, the polysaccharide yields of the four polysaccharides were 9.32% ± 0.11 (P-CF), 7.57% ± 0.11 (P-CL), 8.69% ± 0.16 (P-CC), and 7.25% ± 0.07 (P-CS), respectively. Polysaccharides were mainly composed of mannose, rhamnose, galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, and xylose, of which the molecular weights ranged from 3.31 kDa to 128.06 kDa. P-CC had a triple helix structure. The antioxidant activities of the four polysaccharides were determined by Fe2+ chelating and free radical scavenging abilities. The results showed that all polysaccharides had antioxidant effects. Among them, P-CF had the strongest antioxidant activity, of which the highest scavenging ability of DPPH•, ABTS•+, and hydroxyl radical could reach 84.19% ± 2.65, 94.8% ± 0.22, and 79.97% ± 3.04, respectively, and the best chelating ability of Fe2+ could reach 44.67% ± 1.04. Overall, polysaccharides extracted from different parts of C. oleifera showed a certain antioxidant effect, and could be developed as a new type of pure natural antioxidant for food.

Abstract
Platycodon grandiflorum is consumed popularly as a nutritional and healthy plant in East Asia, which has multiple medicinal functions. As an exploration to elucidate the beneficial ingredients, an acetylated glucomannan (PGP40-1) was purified from P. grandiflorum. Structural analysis showed that PGP40-1 was composed of →4)-β-Manp-(1→, →4)-β-Glcp-(1→, →6)-β-Glcp-(1→, and terminal α-Glcp-(1→. PGP40-1 was found to possess weak antitumor activity in vitro, which was thus modified to afford a selenized polysaccharide (Se-PGP40-1) by the HNO3/Na2SeO3 method. Se-PGP40-1 showed significant antitumor activity in cell and zebrafish models, which could inhibit tumor proliferation and migration by inducing cell apoptosis and blocking angiogenesis. The research not only clarifies the ingredients of P. grandiflorum with high economical value, but also affords a potential antitumor agent originating from the plant polysaccharide.

Abstract
Low molecular weight seaweed polysaccharides exhibit promising potential as novel therapeutics for the prevention of obesity and gut microbiota dysbiosis. The interplay between polysaccharides and gut microbiota may play crucial roles in their anti-obesity effects, but is largely unknown, including the impact of polysaccharides on the composition of the gut microbiota with polysaccharide-degrading capacity. The primary structure of a 5.1 kDa fucan (J2H) from Saccharina japonica was characterized and oral administration of J2H effectively suppressed high-fat diet-induced obesity, blood glucose metabolic dysfunction, dyslipidemia, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Furthermore, the Jensen-Shannon divergence analysis demonstrated that J2H enriched at least four gut bacterial species with fucoidan-degrading potential, including Bacteroides sartorii and Bacteroides acidifaciens. Our findings suggest that the low molecular weight S. japonica fucan, J2H, is a promising potential agent for obesity prevention and its enrichment of gut bacteria with fucoidan-degrading potential may play a vital role in the anti-obesity effects.

Abstract
The effects of Laminaria japonica fucoidan (LF) on immune regulation and intestinal microflora in cyclophosphamide (CTX)-treated mice were investigated in this work. Results indicated that LF significantly enhanced the spleen and thymus indices, promoted spleen lymphocyte and peritoneal macrophages proliferation, and increased the immune-related cytokines production in serum. Moreover, LF could regulate intestinal flora composition, increasing the abundance of Lactobacillaceae and Alistipes, and inhibiting Erysipelotrichia, Turicibacter, Romboutsia, Peptostreptococcaceae, and Faecalibaculum. These results were positively correlated with immune characteristics. Overall, LF could be useful as a new potential strategy to mitigate CTX immunosuppression and intestinal microbiota disorders.

Abstract
Laminaria japonica is widely consumed as a key food and medicine. Polysaccharides are one of the most plentiful constituents of this marine plant. In this study, several polysaccharide fractions with different charge numbers were obtained. Their physicochemical properties and anticoagulant activities were determined by chemical and instrumental methods. The chemical analysis showed that Laminaria japonica polysaccharides (LJPs) and the purified fractions LJP0, LJP04, LJP06, and LJP08 mainly consisted of mannose, glucuronic acid, galactose, and fucose in different mole ratios. LJP04 and LJP06 also contained minor amounts of xylose. The polysaccharide fractions eluted by higher concentration of NaCl solutions showed higher contents of uronic acid and sulfate group. Biological activity assays showed that LJPs LJP06 and LJP08 could obviously prolong the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), indicating that they had strong anticoagulant activity. Furthermore, we found that LJP06 exerted this activity by inhibiting intrinsic factor Xase with higher selectivity than other fractions, which may have negligible bleeding risk. The sulfate group may play an important role in the anticoagulant activity. In addition, the carboxyl group and surface morphology of these fractions may affect their anticoagulant activities. The results provide information for applications of L. japonica polysaccharides, especially LJP06 as anticoagulants in functional foods and therapeutic agents.

Abstract
In recent years, various viral diseases have suddenly erupted, resulting in widespread infection and death. A variety of biological activities from marine natural products have gradually attracted the attention of people. Seaweeds have a wide range of sources, huge output, and high economic benefits. This is very promising in the pharmaceutical industry. In particular, sulfated polysaccharides derived from seaweeds, considered a potential source of bioactive compounds for drug development, have shown antiviral activity against a broad spectrum of viruses, mainly including common DNA viruses and RNA viruses. In addition, sulfated polysaccharides can also improve the body’s immunity. This review focuses on recent advances in antiviral research on the sulfated polysaccharides from seaweeds, including carrageenan, galactan, fucoidan, alginate, ulvan, p-KG03, naviculan, and calcium spirulan. We hope that this review will provide new ideas for the development of COVID-19 therapeutics and vaccines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome is a pathological condition characterized by abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Conventional treatments for metabolic syndrome have limitations due to their nonselectivity, drug resistance, and low bioavailability. The brown seaweed Laminaria japonica (LJP) is a traditional medicine and food in Asia that has shown pharmacological and biochemical properties favorable to the prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related diseases. We will systematically review randomized controlled trials and in vivo preclinical studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of LJP as a useful treatment for metabolic syndrome. METHODS The following databases will be searched from inception to September 2021: MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science. Randomized controlled trials and in vivo preclinical studies that analyzed LJP for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndromes will be included. The outcome measures will include body composition, dietary habit scores, serum lipid profiles, daily nutrient intake, quality of life, number of microbiomes, gastrointestinal symptoms, and bowel function. Studies comparing LJP with any type of control intervention will be included. Data extraction using Review Manager version 5.3 and risk of bias assessment using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias will be performed by 2 independent assessors. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION This systematic review will provide evidence confirming the efficacy and safety of LJP in the treatment of metabolic syndrome. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval was not required, as this study protocol does not include any personal information of the participants. Abstract
Recent studies have shown that seaweed polysaccharides can ameliorate high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced metabolic syndromes associated with the regulatory function of gut microbiota. However, kelp, a natural source of seaweed polysaccharides, is highly viscous, making it difficult to prepare dietary fiber by simple degradation. Therefore, we developed a novel method of preparing low-molecular-weight polysaccharides from Laminaria japonica by combining high-pressure pretreatment and composite enzymatic degradation and evaluated the obesity prevention activity of these polysaccharides. Seaweed L. japonica polysaccharides (SJP) were rapidly utilized by the human fecal microbiota in vitro, resulting in the generation of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), specifically acetate and propionate. The in vivo effects of SJP on the intestinal microbiota were also investigated using HFD-fed C57BL/6J mice. SJP reduced weight gain and fat deposition in HFD-fed mice and increased the concentration of total SCFAs, including acetate, propionate, and butyrate in the feces. SJP ameliorated HFD-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis, resulting in increased abundance of Faecalibaculum, Romboutsia, and Clostridium sensu stricto 1 and decreased abundance of Blautia and Lactobacillus. Further, SJP enhanced the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila in mice provided with HFD and normal chow. Single-strain culture experiments also revealed that SJP promoted the growth of A. muciniphila. This study highlights the potential use of SJP, prepared using composite enzymatic degradation (cellulase and recombinant alginate lyase), in preventing obesity and restoring intestinal homeostasis in obese individuals.
