Iridium solvent complex as a new sensitive probe to detect benzimidazole pesticides based on photoluminescent signals “switch-on” via coordination mechanism

Boric acid group-functional ruthenium complex as a novel fluorescence probe for robust detection of propyl gallate and tert-butyl hydroquinone by tuning the pH

This study reported a ruthenium complex-based fluorescence probe, achieving rapid and sequential detection of propyl gallate (PG) and tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) for the first time by tuning pH only. Under 480 nm excitation, probe exhibited intensive emission at 620 nm, which was selectively quenched by PG at pH 7.0 due to the covalent binding between the boric acid of probe and o-diphenol hydroxyl of PG. Then pH was tuned to 7.4, the emission was significantly quenched by TBHQ because of the π-π stacking between aromatic rings of probe and paraquinone of TBHQ. This probe realized specific and sensitive detection of PG and TBHQ with wide range and low detection limit (0.26 µM for PG and 0.66 µM for TBHQ). Furthermore, a portable visual test paper detection platform was built based on this probe for rapid and sensitive detection of antioxidants in food, which was of great significance for market regulation.

Synthesis of composite materials combining magnetic metal-organic frameworks and conjugated organic frameworks for selective extraction of carbendazim and thiabendazole residues from Chinese herbal medicine samples

A magnetic metal-organic framework MIL-68(Al) and a covalent organic framework were used as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbents in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) to detect carbendazim (CBZ) and thiabendazole (TBZ). The main parameters affecting the extraction in the MSPE process were studied and optimized. Fe3O4@MIL-68(Al) coated with 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene and terephthaldehyde (Fe3O4@MIL-68(Al)@TAPB-PDA-COF) was analyzed and verified. The material was proven to be suitable for adsorbing CBZ and TBZ. Various adsorption models were used to study its adsorption mechanism. The adsorption results were in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Fe3O4@MIL-68(Al)@TAPB-PDA-COF over CBZ and TBZ were 54.24 and 67.87 mg g-1, respectively, and the equilibrium adsorption time was 200 min. Fe3O4@MIL-68(Al)@TAPB-PDA-COF with excellent recyclability showed higher adsorption capacity and selectivity. A method based on Fe3O4@MIL-68(Al)@TAPB-PDA-COF combined with HPLC-UV was established under the optimal extraction conditions and used to separate and detect trace imidazole drugs in Chinese herbal samples, achieving a low limit of detection (0.65-1.30 μg L-1) with excellent linear correlation (r > 0.999). The recovery rate and relative standard deviation were 86.05-99.78 % and 0.15-4.90 %, respectively. Therefore, the Fe3O4@MIL-68@TAPB-PDA-COF can be regarded as an effective adsorbent for the pretreatment of CBZ and TBZ drugs in Chinese herbal samples.

Novel Electrochemiluminescent Biosensor to Ultrasensitively Detect U94 Gene in Human Herpesvirus 6 Using Metal-Organic Framework-Based Nanoemitters Comprising Iridium(III) Complexes via One-Pot Coordination Reaction Strategy

The detection of the U94 gene in human herpesvirus 6 is crucial for early diagnosis of HHV-6 infections, which could induce acute febrile illness in infants. In this work, the first ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for detecting U94 gene in Human Herpesvirus 6 was successfully designed by utilizing efficient novel metal-organic framework (MOF)-based ECL nanoemitters comprising iridium(III) complexes (Ir-ZIF-8-NH2) synthesized via one-pot coordination reaction strategy as an ECL indicator and a target-catalyzed hairpin assembly (CHA) signal amplification strategy. The as-prepared ECL indicator Ir-ZIF-8-NH2 exhibited an approximately 2.7-fold ECL intensity compared with its small molecular analogue of emissive iridium(III) complex named IrppymIM formed by in situ coordination reaction between iridium(III) solvent complex and imidazole ligands. In addition, a target-catalyzed hairpin assembly (CHA) strategy was employed to further improve the sensitivity of the proposed ECL biosensor, which demonstrated a wide linear range from 1 fM to 1 μM and the limit of detection as low as 0.113 fM (S/N = 3). Significantly, this biosensor was successfully applied to detect U94 gene in plasmids and real virus samples. The recoveries were in the range of 97.0-109.0% for plasmids and 95.7-107.5% for real virus samples with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.87-2.53%. These satisfactory experimental results from the proposed ECL biosensor in this work would inevitably promote the development of new time/cost-effective and sensitive methods to detect HHV-6 with a major global health threat and substantial burden on healthcare in the future.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of four benzimidazole residues in food by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy combined with chemometrics

In this study, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) combined with chemometric methods were developed for qualitative and quantitative analysis of four benzimidazole (BMZs) residues in corn. Sulfhydryl functionalized Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Ag-SH magnetic SERS substrates were prepared to obtain the SERS spectra of four BMZs for chemometric analysis. The partial least squares regression discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) model performed best, with a recall rate upwards 99.17%, and could successfully distinguish four BMZs. Under the support vector machine regression (SVR) model, the detection limits of carbendazim, benomyl, thiophanate-methyl and thiabendazole were 0.055 mg/L, 0.056 mg/L, 0.067 mg/L and 0.093 mg/L, respectively; the average recovery was in the range of 85.6%-107.5%. Furthermore, the method verified by HPLC, and the results showed that there was no significant difference between two methods (p > 0.05). Therefore, the strategy based on SERS coupling chemometrics can be served as a promising tool for rapid determination of BMZs residues in food.
