Qualitative and quantitative analysis of four benzimidazole residues in food by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy combined with chemometrics

Synthesis of metal framework-modified carbon dots with super large stokes shift using Hami melon as a green precursor for detecting thiophanate-methyl residue in leafy vegetables

Consuming leafy vegetables with excessive thiophanate-methyl (TM) residue poses serious risks to human health. To realize rapidly and sensitively detecting TM in leafy vegetables, we developed a fluorescent probe based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8-modified carbon dots using Hami melon as the green precursor (HM-CDs@ZIF-8). Meanwhile, the mechanism of HM-CDs@ZIF-8 for detecting TM was investigated and explained. The results of the performance tests showed that the prepared HM-CDs@ZIF-8 exhibited high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, robust anti-interference capability, reliable reproducibility and repeatability, and long-term stability. After optimization experiments, the fluorescence intensity of HM-CDs@ZIF-8 showed a strong linear correlation with the concentration of TM (0.00171-3.4239 mol/L) with a detection limit of 2.025 μmol/L. The HM-CDs@ZIF-8 was successfully applied to determine TM in spiked leafy vegetables with satisfactory recoveries of 96-105%. The relative standard deviations were in the range of 0.26-2.55%. The sensor has a promising application for detecting TM in leafy vegetables.

Ultrasensitive SERS aptasensor using Au@Ag bimetallic nanorod SERS tags for the selective detection of amantadine in foods

Herein, a novel surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) aptasensor was developed for amantadine (AMD) detection, based on magnetite nanoparticles coated with polyethylenimine, silver nanoclusters and aptamers (Fe3O4@PEI@AgNC-apt) as the capture probe and complementary DNA-modified gold nanorods (AuNRs@4-MPBA@Ag-c-DNA containing 4-mercaptophenylboric acid molecules) as the reporter probe. In the presence of AMD, the AMD and the reporter probe competed for the aptamer on the surface of the capture probe, resulting in the reporter probe detaching from the capture probe leading to a decrease in intensity of the SERS signal at 1067 cm-1 for 4-MPBA. Under optimal conditions, a good linear relationship was established between the SERS intensity at 1067 cm-1 and the logarithm of the AMD concentration over the range 10-6-102 mg L-1, with a LOD of 0.50 × 10-6 mg L-1. The AMD levels in spiked samples were evaluated using the SERS aptasensor, with good recoveries ranging from 90.57% to 113.49% being obtained.

Flexible 3D Plasmonic Web Enables Remote Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Nanoplasmonic materials concentrate light in specific regions of dramatic electromagnetic enhancement: hot spots. Such regions can be employed to perform single molecule detection via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. However, this phenomenon is challenging since hot spots are expected to be highly intense/abundant and positioning of molecules within such hot spots is crucial to manage with ultrasensitive SERS. Herein, it is discovered that a 3D plasmonic web embedded within a biohybrid (3D-POWER) exhibits plasmonic transmission, spontaneously absorbs the analyte, and meets these so much needed criteria in ultrasensitive SERS. 3D-POWER is built with nanopaper and self-assembled layers of graphene oxide and gold nanorods. According to in silico experiments, 3D-POWER captures light in a small region and performs plasmonic field transmission in a surrounding volume, thereby activating a plasmonic web throughout the simulated volume. The study also provides experimental evidence supporting the plasmonic field transport ability of 3D power, which operates as a SERS signal carrier (even beyond the apparatus field of view), and the ultrasensitive behavior of this ecofriendly and flexible material facilitating yoctomolar limit of detection. Besides, 3D-POWER is proven useful in food and biofluids analysis. It is foreseen that 3D-POWER can be employed as a valuable platform in (bio)analytical applications.

Ti3C2Tx/laser-induced graphene-based micro-droplet electrochemical sensing platform for rapid and sensitive detection of benomyl

The design and fabrication of high-performance electrode devices are highly important for the practical application of electrochemical sensors. In this study, flexible three-dimensional porous graphene electrode devices were first facilely fabricated using common laser ablation technique at room temperature. After then, hydrophilic two-dimensional MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheet was decorated on the surface of the laser-induced graphene (LIG), resulting in disposable Ti3C2Tx/LIG electrode devices. After introducing Ti3C2Tx nanosheet, the electrochemical active area, electron transfer ability of LIG electrode device and its adsorption efficiency toward organic pesticide benomyl was significantly boosted. As a result, the fabricated Ti3C2Tx/LIG electrode device exhibited significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward benomyl oxidation. Based on this, a novel and ultra-sensitive electrochemical platform for micro-droplet detection of benomyl was achieved in the range of 10 nM-6000 nM with detection sensitivity of 169.9 μA μM-1 cm-2 and detection limit of 5.8 nM. Considering the low-cost Ti3C2Tx/LIG electrode devices are rarely used for electrochemical analysis, we believed this research work will contribute to exploring the broader application of MXene/LIG electrode devices in the field of electrochemical sensing.

A review of SERS coupled microfluidic platforms: From configurations to applications

Microfluidic systems have attracted considerable attention due to their low reagent consumption, short analysis time, and ease of integration in comparison to conventional methods, but still suffer from shortcomings in sensitivity and selectivity. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) offers several advantages in the detection of compounds, including label-free detection at the single-molecule level, and the narrow Raman peak width for multiplexing. Combining microfluidics with SERS is a viable way to improve their detection sensitivity. Researchers have recently developed several SERS coupled microfluidic platforms with substantial potential for biomolecular detection, cellular and bacterial analysis, and hazardous substance detection. We review the current development of SERS coupled microfluidic platforms, illustrate their detection principles and construction, and summarize the latest applications in biology, environmental protection and food safety. In addition, we innovatively summarize the current status of SERS coupled multi-mode microfluidic platforms with other detection technologies. Finally, we discuss the challenges and countermeasures during the development of SERS coupled microfluidic platforms, as well as predict the future development trend of SERS coupled microfluidic platforms.
